Many cubicle hounds wish they could work in a more open office environment. You can't get much more open than the office environment at Nude House, an alleged Web software developer in Buckinghamshire, England. If stories currently circulating the Web are to be believed, the company is looking for female coders and salespeople of any gender who are willing to work in a completely naked office setting. That's right, not even shoes are allowed. Now, we're almost willing to bet our skivvies this will turn out to be some sort of viral Internet spoof. If it doesn't, just think of the weight basic office decisions would take on. Aeron chair No way' that mesh material will leave marks. Hot coffee in the break room Maybe something room temperature would be safer. Best to keep that stapler at a distance, too.A more detailed version of this picture appears on Nude House&39's employment opportunities page. Meet your new co-worker. Her eyes are up here.(Credit:Nude House)With a name like Nude House, you might be expecting something titillating like an adult Web content or online strip poker. The company's main product--again, if Nude House doesn't exist just to test the gullibility of the Web-going public--is actually a somewhat old-fashioned technology called "Move Your Mouse" that enables text and additional images to pop up when a mouse is waved over an online picture.Nude House founder Chris Taylor says he has been a naturist for about three years. As the name implies, naturists prefer to be naked outside. You can imagine that might be difficult in England's rainy climate, especially when lots of sensitive computer and electrical equipment is required to do the job. According to Nude House, the office will feature warm temperatures, showers, and a collection hamper for soiled sitting material. I'll bet Microsoft never has to deal with soiled sitting material. With April Fools' Day so recently upon us, I had to check in directly with Nude House over e-mail. "Yes," he insisted, "it is for real." The Nude House Web site looks like it was designed in 1996 by a middle-schooler with a basic HTML manual, so you can see where my skepticism comes from. The photo of a massive CRT monitor and naked salesgirls doesn't exactly project professionalism either.Taylor says he has had some applicants for the coding jobs, but it won't help that his Craigslist job ad was flagged as inappropriate and removed from the site. He has since reposted it with the headline "Nude Female Web Coders wanted."Click to get a better glimpse at this highly improbable Craigslist post. The population of skilled Web coder naturists may be small, but the offer of a roughly $40,000 yearly salary could be enough to get a potential employee to consider stripping down. "There are no external benefits to having a nude workforce, just pleasure for all concerned," Taylor said. Purely professional pleasure, I would expect.Taylor told us five staff members are already working at Nude House. He isn't concerned about any issues cropping up in a mixed gender office full of coding geeks in their birthday suits. "There are strict rules to stop any messing about, so I think those, plus their own professionalism, will ease over most problems there could be," he said. Plus, Taylor promises that working at Nude House will be "great fun"--unless of course, the newly hired employees are just part of some giant nude pyramid scheme.

0 Vote(s)

The dubious ad in ICQ also displays a warning from Antivirus8 that says malware is detected on the machine and encourages the user to download software.(Credit:Kaspersky)A Kaspersky researcher has discovered a fake antivirus warning linked to ads on ICQ, which is popular in Russia and Eastern Europe. The ad that showed up in the ICQ window was for a women's clothing company called Charlotte Russe and clicking on the ad directs to the company's Web site, said Roel Schouwenberg, a senior antivirus researcher at Moscow-based Kaspersky. Around the same time the ad was displayed another pop-up appeared in a new browser from "Antivirus8," that said suspicious activity was detected on the system and it encouraged the user to download the program, which is not a legitimate antivirus product, Schouwenberg told CNET. The malware attack is interesting for several reasons. The rogue antivirus "scareware" appears without the user doing anything that normally triggers such pop-ups, such as clicking on malicious links in search results, he said. The attack also does not appear to have an exploit included in it' just the social-engineering aspect in which the user is lured into downloading supposed antivirus protection that is totally unnecessary, he added. In addition, the ad image related to the fake antivirus pop-up is hosted on a server that appears to be unassociated to the retail company, according to Schouwenberg. "This means that somebody went through the trouble of pretending to be this store" to get the ad server yieldmanager to approve and run the ads, he wrote in a blog post. "They put in quite a lot of effort to seem legitimate," he said. "Attacking yieldmanager successfully and having fake anti-virus in the ICQ ads...is something that is very high level and hard to achieve." Schouwenberg speculated that there could be two fraud gangs associated with the attack-- one responsible for the fake antivirus portion and the other responsible for getting the malware to be distributed via the ads on ICQ. Kaspersky reported the problem to yieldmanager, which is owned by Yahoo. Right Media, which operates yieldmanager, did not respond to an e-mail from CNET seeking comment.

0 Vote(s)

LAS VEGAS--No longer content to simply show its latest electronics at CES, LG this year brought a line of networked "smart appliances." At a press event here today, the company announced a line of kitchen and cleaning appliances that use the Thinq brand name, promising consumers better energy efficiency and control.LG&39's smart home concept with connected, smart appliances.(Credit:LG)The appliances use a Wi-Fi home network and smart meter to offer features, such as remotely operating appliances from a smart phone or programming them to take advantage of off-peak rates. Being connected to a network also enables the appliances to alert their owners that something is wrong or allows customer service to service a machine remotely, according to LG.The Thinq appliances include a washer, dryer, robotic vacuum cleaner, oven, and refrigerator. LG joins other appliances makers, including General Electric and Whirlpool, in making network-aware appliances. Some of the features that LG says are possible seem relatively novel while others have been touted before but never materialized. For example, having a customer service representative troubleshoot an appliance problem by logging onto the machine would save consumers time and trouble. By contrast, it's not clear consumers are willing to pay more for "food management" features, designed to send an alert when food is spoiled in the refrigerator. The energy efficiency capabilities rely on a smart meter and tiered pricing. With time-of-use pricing, a person could program a dishwasher to do its power-hungry job in the middle of the night to take advantage of lower rates. But in the U.S., not all utilities have installed smart, two-way meters or offer variable electricity rates.

0 Vote(s)

Intel has rolled out an ultrasmall solid-state drive, targeting dual-drive laptops that pair an SSD with a hard disk drive.Intel&39's ultrasmall Solid-State Drive 310 is aimed at dual-drive laptops. (Credit:Intel)Intel's Solid-State Drive 310 Series delivers "full SSD performance in 1/8th the size," according to Intel's announcement today. The SSD contains 34-nanometer (one of Intel's most advanced chip manufacturing processes) Intel NAND flash memory and is available in an m-SATA form factor (see photo) in 40GB and 80GB capacities. It weighs just 10 grams. In addition to dual-drive laptops, Intel said it is targeting single-drive Netbooks and tablets. In a dual-drive laptop, an SSD is used to "accelerate boot time and access to frequently used applications or files," Intel said. High-end gaming laptop vendors have been offering dual-drive configurations for some time. A typical configuration consists of a large-capacity HDD and smaller-capacity SSD. SSDs can be extremely fast, leaving traditional hard disks in the dust when reading data. And in ultrathin laptops, they are being used as the primary drive due to space and heat considerations. Apple has moved its entire MacBook Air line to SSDs. And ultrathin designs like the Sony Vaio X series use SSDs because, like the MacBook Air, they cannot accommodate the relative bulk of a standard hard disk. Lenovo said it will tap the new Intel SSDs. "The Intel SSD 310 series will allow us to provide the advantages of a full-performance Intel SSD paired with the storage of a hard disk drive in a small, dual-drive system," said Tom Butler, director of ThinkPad product marketing, in a statement. There are competitors out there, too. Seagate, for example, offers a 500GB Momentus XT hard disk with integrated flash memory for extra speed. And Toshiba is supplying the compact solid-state drives--what Apple calls "flash storage"--in the new MacBook Airs. Intel's SSD 310 is priced at $99 for the 40GB model and $179 for the 80GB version, both in 1,000-unit quantities.

0 Vote(s)

Microblogging service Twitter is preparing to open its first office outside the United States, with company representatives meeting with London property agents last week, according to British newspaper The Telegraph. The San Francisco startup is already an international service in the sense that it has a growing user base outside the US.
In 2010, Twitter became a truly global phenomenon with 25 billion tweets, some of them quite powerful. But most of its growth came form overseas. If you look at a comScore chart of U.S. visitors to Twitter.com (see above), it looks like Twitter&'s growth in the U.S. is stalling. In November, Twitter.com drew an estimated 24 million unique visitors, down from 25.1 million in October. Unique visitors are still up 24 percent from a year ago, but there has been zero growth since July.Globally, however, Twitter.com attracted an estimated 104.6 million visitors in October (the month with the most recent data), up 79.4 percent from the year before and still growing at a steady clip month-over-month. These numbers are not the same as total users, which Twitter counts at 175 million (not all users go to Twitter.com, many use desktop or mobile clients, but the comScore numbers are a good proxy for Twitter&'s overall health). Another way to look at it is in the year that Twitter.com&'s overall audience grew by 46 million people across the world, only about 6 million of those new visitors came from the U.S. Pageviews in the U.S. are up 23 percent annually, in line with visitor growth. But one encouraging metric is that time on the U.S. site is up 48.5 percent, which indicates that users are finding the new design which rolled out last October to be more engaging. I know I use Twitter.com much more than I did before the new design. Still, at 24 million U.S. unique visitors, that makes Twitter.com about the same size as Yelp, and smaller than LinkedIn (28.5 million) or the Huffington Post (26 million). Twitter needs to reignite growth in the U.S. if it wants to ever be in the same weight class as Facebook (152 million U.S. visitors).CrunchBase InformationTwitterInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
