Manufacturing problems led to the shortfall of theiPad 2 during the first quarter, IHS iSuppli said yesterday, prompting the research firm to trim its forecast on Apple'stablet shipments for the year.(Credit:Apple)As iPad buyers have run into sold-out stock at Apple stores and long wait times ordering online, questions have arisen over why supplies of the new tablet failed to come close to demand.Though it raised the specter of supply chain problems caused by the Japanese earthquake and tsunami, IHS iSuppli doesn't see the disaster as contributing to the iPad shortfall. Following the earthquake, Apple quickly moved to ensure that it would have the necessary components to ship the iPad 2 last month. Instead, the firm pointed to manufacturing problems with specific components."IHS iSuppli sources indicate that Apple's production was stymied by manufacturing difficulties, which--combined with strong demand--led to short supplies of the popular tablet," noted the firm's report. "Those issues, according to the sources, included quality concerns with liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, production shortages of the new speaker, lamination issues with one of the touch suppliers, and end-unit production shortfalls."Though Apple has since been able to bump up production of the new tablet, the company still won't be able to meet its targets for April. Beyond that, a shortage of supplies owing to the Japanese earthquake could hinder Apple's ability to ramp up production enough in the second half of the year to compensate for the initial shortfall, said the firm.As a result, IHS iSuppli now expects Apple to ship 39.7 million units of both the original iPad and the iPad 2 in 2011, down 9 percent from its February forecast of 43.7 million.Based on the firm's estimate of 15.1 million iPads shipped last year, it also now expects iPad shipments to rise 163.3 percent this year, down from its February estimate of 189.6 percent. However, the initial short supply is not expected to pose a problem in 2012. Looking at next year, IHS iSuppli has upped its estimate on iPad shipments to 62.2 million from 61.6 million previously.Over the short term, Apple will continue to retain its dominance and edge over competing tablet makers on content, price, marketing, and momentum, the report said. Apple is forecast to lose its majority share of the tablet market late next year or early 2013, but it will still end 2012 with more than 50 percent of all tablets sold and hang on to a big lead beyond that."While Apple may lose its dominant share, there is no sign yet of a serious opponent to challenge Apple's place as the tablet market leader at least through 2015," IHS iSuppli analyst Rhoda Alexander said in the report.(Credit:IHS iSuppli)

0 Vote(s)

In a somewhat ironic turn of events, Microsoft said this evening it will file a formal complaint against Google tomorrow with European antitrust regulators.Microsoft, which itself has been the subject of several antitrust probes in the United States and abroad, is argues Google is engaging in anticompetitive behavior in search, online advertising, and smartphone software, Microsoft general counsel Brad Smith wrote in a blog explaining the action. "Google has done much to advance its laudable mission to 'organize the world's information,' but we're concerned by their broadening pattern of conduct--including walling off access to content and data--that is aimed at stopping anyone else from creating a competitive alternative," Smith said in a statement to CNET. Google representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Smith pointed out that Google's share of the search and search advertising markets in Europe is even higher than in the United States--around 95 percent. In contrast, Microsoft serves up about a quarter of search results in the U.S. through its Bing search engine and partnership with Yahoo, Smith said."Unfortunately, Google has engaged in a broadening pattern of walling off access to content and data that competitors need to provide search results to consumers and to attract advertisers," Smith said in his blog. In his blog, Smith lists a half dozen instances where he says Google is impeding competition, including limiting search results and Windows Phone access to YouTube, blocking access to content owned by book publishers, and restricting advertisers' access to their own data. Related links&149' Has Google learned Microsoft's antitrust lessons &149' Study: Antitrust concerns kill Yahoo-Google ad deal&149' Court rejects Google Books settlement The complaint comes as the Justice Department reviews Google's $700 million bid to acquire airline flight and ticket information provider ITA Software. The deal has raised concerns among rival search engine companies such as Microsoft and online travel companies, including Expedia and Travelocity. They have all argued against the deal, saying that it would give the search giant a monopoly over online travel searches. Google has come under increased scrutiny over the past several years as it has come to dominate the Internet. (CNET explored the case against Google and what lessons it could learn from Microsoft's own antitrust woes.) In February 2010, European regulators sent a letter to Google asking the company to explain how it ranks search results and advertising after complaints from European businesses such as Foundem, a price comparison site, and Ciao, another price comparison site owned by Microsoft. Those companies--Foundem in particular--have long complained that Google penalized their Web sites in search results under competitive pressure. The Texas attorney general's office followed suit with its own antitrust review in September 2010, demanding Google turn over a broad range of internal documents, including its formula for determining advertising rates and information on the company's closely guarded algorithms that run its search engine and AdWords, Google's system for displaying ads with keyword search results. Ohio and Wisconsin are also said to be considering antitrust probes.Microsoft, of course, is no stranger to accusations of predatory behavior. In 1998, the Justice Department accused Microsoft of illegally leveraging its Windows monopoly to give its Internet Explorer browser an unfair advantage. Because Internet Explorer was included as part of the operating system, it was automatically the default browser for the majority of PC users. A federal judge ruled against Microsoft, leading the company to ultimately settle with antitrust regulators in 2002.

0 Vote(s)

Xbox 360(Credit:Microsoft)Is Microsoft laying the groundwork for its nextXboxThe software giant placed a job notice on its Web site yesterday, seeking a hardware engineer in its Interactive Entertainment Business division. The posting indicates that Microsoft wants to hire "a graphics hardware architect" for the company's Xbox Console Architecture group, which its posting claims is "responsible for defining and delivering next-generation console architectures from conception through implementation."Microsoft states in the job posting that it's looking for someone who has a "solid understand of graphics hardware implementation, including design methodologies and production yield and cost analysis." It also wants someone who has experience taking "designs from investigation to end-customer shipment during their career."In other words, Microsoft seems to be working on a next-generation hardware platform--likely the Xbox 360 successor--and it needs some help to eventually transform the concept into reality. But exactly when Microsoft plans to deliver its next console is not publicly known. In an interview last year, Microsoft senior director of Xbox product management, David Hufford, made it clear that the company isn't rushing into launching its next console."I think it's important to say that the Xbox 360 is the console of the long future for us," Hufford said before an audience at the Consumer Electronics Show. "There is no need to launch a new console because we're able to give this console new life either with software upgrades or hardware upgrades like Project Natal. The Xbox 360 was designed for a long life, and I don't even know if we're at the midpoint yet."The Xbox 360 launched in the U.S. in 2005.As Sony'sPlayStation 2 has shown, consoles can stay on store shelves for a decade (or more) and remain relevant. But Sony, which has been most outspoken about the "10-year console life cycle" in the past, has released new consoles while older platforms were still on store shelves. The PlayStation 3, for example, has been available since 2006, even though the PlayStation 2, which launched in 2000, is still for sale.Whether Microsoft will follow Sony's lead with the Xbox 360 follow-up remains to be seen. So far, the company has been loath to discuss any details surrounding any Xbox 360 successor. But it appears that the wheels have been set in motion to deliver that device at some point in the future.Microsoft did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment.(Via Engadget)

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Stephen Shankland/CNET)By now we've come to terms with the fact that the Sony Ericson Xperia Play is not the PSP Phone that we were all wishing for, but we still think it's worth comparing it against the game-centric Sony NGP, announced just a few short weeks ago. The Xperia Play is the firstPlayStation-certified smartphone on the market, which means it will be capable of downloading content from the PlayStation Store. Its 1Ghz Snapdragon processor promises 60-frames-per-second performance without wiping out the battery. We're not sure if the Xperia Play can satisfy the gamer who wants the latest and greatest from the portable gaming scene, but the Xperia Play will probably offer the closest approximation to it of any smartphone around. The real question is whether or not consumers will find the need to own an Xperia Play in addition to a portable system like the NGP or 3DS.
Apple outscored both Dell and Hewlett-Packard in overall satisfaction with tech support by phone, though its problem-resolution rates took a bit of a hit in a study released today by consumer feedback firm Vocal Laboratories.Based on interviews with customers from July 2009 to December 2010, Apple's lead in phone support over Dell and HP dipped a bit in the second half of last year compared with the first half, according to the study from Vocal Laboratories (Vocalabs). But Apple customers seeking tech support still proved the happiest, with 66 percent saying they were "very satisfied" with the call itself, compared to 51 percent for HP's customers and 49 percent for Dell's. Further, 76 percent of Apple users said they were very satisfied with the representative who helped them on the call, though that too was down a bit from 82 percent in the first half of the year.(Credit:Vocal Laboratories)Satisfaction over actually fixing the problem also dipped slightly for Apple, with 60 percent of those polled saying the problem was resolved during the call, compared with 67 percent in the first half of the year. Looking at satisfaction with the company overall, Apple fell in the second half to 59 percent from 66 percent in the first half, though that was still higher than the rates for Dell and HP.Satisfaction with the automated part of the call, which Vocalabs dubbed the "nuisance factor," also saw a drop among Apple's customers from 2009 to 2010, at the same time that it improved for Dell users.Thirty-five percent of Apple users questioned during the second half of 2010 ran into difficulty reaching a live person, irrelevant or repetitive steps, and trouble with the IVR (interactive voice response) system, which tries to route calls based on the responses of the caller. That proved to be an increase from the 21 percent who reported similar problems in the second half of 2009.In comparison, Dell's nuisance factor over the same period dropped to 46 percent in 2010's second half from 55 percent in 2009, though even with the drop, Dell's rate was still higher than Apple's.(Credit:Vocal Laboratories)Despite the declines for Apple in certain areas of customer satisfaction, the company continued to outpace Dell and HP overall and still commands the most loyal customers.Asked whether they'd buy the same brand again, 84 percent of Apple users said yes, compared with 60 percent for Dell and 66 percent for HP. And asked if they'd recommend the brand to others, the results were similar--85 percent of Apple customers said they would, compared with 61 percent for Dell and 66 percent for HP.The study was based on 2,166 telephone interviews conducted between July 2009 and December 2010. Customers were interviewed immediately after tech support calls to Apple, Dell, and HP, allowing Vocalabs to directly compare the quality of phone support among the three.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft said today that next week's Patch Tuesday will bring 17 updates plugging 40 holes and featuring two rated "critical," including one in Internet Explorer that was targeted in attacks last month. The critical IE vulnerability was written for IE 6 and 7 butIE 8 is also vulnerable, Microsoft said when it issued a warning about it in November. Also fixed on Tuesday will be the final of four holes in Windows that the Stuxnet malware used. "This is a local Elevation of Privilege vulnerability and we've seen no evidence of its use in active exploits aside from the Stuxnet malware," Mike Reavey, director of the Microsoft Security Response Center, said in a blog post. Windows (all supported versions), Office IE, SharePoint, and Exchange are affected by the bulletins, today's advisory says. This brings Microsoft's total bulletin count for the year to a record 106, Reavey said. He attributed that to vulnerability reports in Microsoft products increasing slightly and older products "meeting newer attack methods, coupled with overall growth in the vulnerability marketplace." "Meanwhile, the percentage of vulnerabilities reported to us cooperatively continues to remain high at around 80 percent' in other words, for most vulnerabilities we're able to release a comprehensive security update before the issue is broadly known," Reavey wrote.

0 Vote(s)

Advanced Micro Devices said today that chief executive Dirk Meyer has resigned in a &''mutual agreement with the board of directors.&''The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based chip maker has appointed chief financial officer Thomas Seifert as interim CEO. The announcement comes as a big surprise just after the company debuted its major Fusion microprocessor family &8212' which combines graphics and a microprocessor on a single chip &8212' at the Consumer Electronics Show last week.Since Meyer has been a visionary CEO for AMD, which is a huge company but is always an underdog to Intel, his departure is an industry earthquake. In that sense, it&'s on par with the announcement today that Intel will pay $1.5 billion to Nvidia in a six-year patent license agreement.Meyer, 49, was a former chip architect and executive at Digital Equipment Corp. He became CEO in 2008, replacing Hector Ruiz, and has been a key visionary behind AMD&'s chip strategy. During that time, AMD engineered a turnaround and outwitted Intel on a couple of fronts. As an AMD microprocessor design executive, Meyer and colleague Fred Weber came up with Opteron, the chip that gave AMD a foothold in the server chip market for the very first time. That started a long rebound for AMD and got Meyer the CEO job.On Meyer&'s watch, AMD extracted a billion-dollar settlement from Intel, ending antitrust claims. AMD also spun out Global Foundries, a chip making contract manufacturer, during the Meyer-Ruiz years. The company announced its preliminary fourth quarter revenue and gross margin and affirmed that its product roadmap for 2011 is on track. The CEO search committee will be headed by Bruce Claflin, chairman of AMD&'s board. Claflin will become executive chairman as he assumes additional responsibilities during the transition. Seifert will maintain his current job as CFO and has asked not to be considered for the permanent CEO job.a4ADirk became CEO during difficult times. He successfully stabilized AMD while simultaneously concluding strategic initiatives, including the launch of GlobalFoundries, the successful settlement of our litigation with Intel and delivering Fusion (accelerated processing units) APUs to the market,a4 said Claflin.a4However, the Board believes we have the opportunity to create increased shareholder value over time,&'' Claflin continued. &''This will require the company to have significant growth, establish market leadership and generate superior financial returns. We believe a change in leadership at this time will accelerate the companya4a4s ability to accomplish these objectives.a4Seifert joined AMD in 2009 and has more than 20 years of general management, global operations and financial management expertise. Immediately prior to joining AMD, Seifert served as COO and CFO of Qimonda. Seifert said in a statement that AMD is entering 2011 with considerable product and financial momentum.AMD said preliminary results show that revenue increased 2 percent in the fourth quarter to $1.65 billion and gross profit margin was 45 percent. The company reaffirmed its previous guidance disclosed in November.[photo credit: Reuters]Next Story: Is Groupon slowing down VCs wager $950M that ita4a4s not Previous Story: Cisco security exec cheers on Android&'s security flawsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Fusion, graphics chips, microprocessorCompanies: advanced micro devices, Intel, NvidiaPeople: Bruce Claflin, Dirk Meyer, Thomas Seifert Tags: Fusion, graphics chips, microprocessorCompanies: advanced micro devices, Intel, NvidiaPeople: Bruce Claflin, Dirk Meyer, Thomas SeifertDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Nasuni, a provider of software that streamlines data transfer to cloud storage outlets, announced today that it has raised $15 million in its second round of funding led by Flybridge Capital Partners. The company&'s software serves as a link between local storage and any number of cloud storage providers, which store data in remote servers and usually charge per gigabyte of storage, like Iron Mountain and Amazon&'s S3 storage service. The software behaves like a virtual server that hosts some data locally in a cache and regularly transfers data back and forth between cloud storage providers. It can be slower and sometimes less efficient to use cloud storage, though. Nasuni&'s software attempts to remove some of the headaches by including a number of functions that speed up data transfer. One example is de-duplication, which only transmits changes in files to the cloud server rather than the whole file if it&'s already present on a cloud server. There&'s been a lot of interest in moving data to remote cloud servers because it can cut costs for many companies. Services like Nasuni&'s let companies add storage as they need it. That means they don&'t have to install and maintain expensive in-house databases that are often underused.Cloud-based service provider Salesforce recently launched its own version of a cloud-based database called database.com.The company was founded by storage industry veterans Andres Rodriguez and Robert Mason in 2009 and has 25 employees. Rodriguez and Mason have already seen some success in cloud storage, selling their earlier company Archivas to Hitachi Data Systems in 2007 for $120 million.Nasuni raised $8 million in a first round in March, 2009, from Sigma Venture Partners and North Bridge Venture Partners.[Photo: Tom Raftery]Previous Story: AT&038'T snags more bandwidth for 4G: Buys Qualcomm&'s FLO TV wireless spectrum for $1.9BPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: cloud computing, cloud storageCompanies: Amazon, Archivas, Iron Mountain, Nasuni, salesforce Tags: cloud computing, cloud storageCompanies: Amazon, Archivas, Iron Mountain, Nasuni, salesforceMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Now that Samung&'s Galaxy Tab is out, Motorola&'s Android tablet has become the iPad competitor to pine over. Google&'s Andy Rubin briefly teased conference-goers with the device at last week&'s D: Dive Into Mobile event and since then even more details have leaked out.The unnamed tablet features a 10-inch screen, runs Android 3.0 (which goes by the codename &''Honeycomb&'') and is Verizon bound, tipsters tell the gadget blog Engadget. It&'s apparently driven by an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, contains 32 gigabytes of storage, and has an expandable memory slot for up to another 32GB. And like every modern tablet, it sports front and rear-facing cameras. The news confirms previous reports on Motorola&'s tablet. We&'ve known that Motorola was working on a 10-inch Android tablet for months, and we also reported that it would likely be the first device to run Android 3.0.By bringing the device on stage, Rubin surely knew he was going to excite Android fans and gadget bloggers. I suspect that Motorola will show it off even more at the Consumer Electronics Show next month in Las Vegas (and VentureBeat will be there to grab the details). Don&'t expect to see it officially released until several months into 2011, when Google is expected to release Android 3.0.Check out some spy photos of the tablet below:Photos via EngadgetPrevious Story: Record-breaking World of Warcraft Cataclysm sells 3.3M units in its first day outPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, iPad, tabletsCompanies: Google, motorolaPeople: Andy Rubin Tags: Android, iPad, tabletsCompanies: Google, motorolaPeople: Andy RubinDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
