Apple has released iTunes 10.3 (Download for Mac or Windows), which includes initial support for Apple's new iCloud features.Officially unveiled at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference yesterday, iCloud is the company's upcoming replacement for MobileMe. While iCloud in its entirety will be available later this year, parts of it are being enabled sooner, including managing currently purchased items on multiple machines as well as previous purchases from the iTunes store.iTunes 10.3 is available via Apple&39's Software Update utility. The new release of iTunes comes with Automatic Download, a feature that ensures that all devices you have running iTunes are updated with music, apps, and books that you purchase, so an item purchased on oneMac will be downloaded on your other Macs running iTunes 10.3.Ultimately users will have to wait for iTunes 10.5 and OS X 10.7 Lion to fully implement all iCloud features, but for now this will be a convenient introduction. iTunes 10.3 is available for download either at Apple's iTunes, through Software Update, or from the Apple Support Downloads pages (see below), and will be about 75MB in size depending on the version.&149' iTunes 10.3&149' iTunes 10.3 for Windows (64-bit)In addition to automatic downloads, the update includes options to download previously purchased items at no cost (though Apple warns that if previous purchases are no longer in the store then they will not be available).Questions Comments Have a fix Post them below or e-mail us!Be sure to check us out on Twitter and the CNET Mac forums.

0 Vote(s)

BrightSource Energy said today it has secured financing for a utility-scale solar plant in the California desert, the first project of this type to be built in the U.S. in decades. The Oakland, Calif.-based company said that it has finalized $1.6 billion in loans guaranteed from the U.S. Department of Energy for the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System, a facility which will have three concentrating solar thermal plants. The company also said today Google will invest $168 million in equity into the project, joining BrightSource and NRG Solar, a division of utility NRG. The Ivanpah facility will have a capacity of 370 megawatts (it will have a total 392 megawatt capacity and require 22 megawatts to operate) and is expected to be operating in 2013. It will generate enough electricity to supply about 85,000 homes, according to the DOE, while BrightSource Energy estimates 140,000 homes based on its utility power purchase agreement. In a company blog, Google said it is investing in the Ivanpah project to ensure that it has sufficient funding and to earn money. Google and its Google.org philanthropy has invested in a few renewable energy start-ups, including BrightSource Energy, and last year invested $38.8 million in a wind farm, but its stake in the Ivanpah project is its largest energy investment to date."We hope that investing in Ivanpah spurs continued development and deployment of this promising technology while encouraging other companies to make similar investments in renewable energy," said Rick Needham, director of green business operations. A sketch of the three solar towers and 170,00 heliostats of the Ivanpah solar project will look when finished in 2013.(Credit:BrightSource Energy)The Ivanpah project has been under development for years and will be the first large-scale project for BrightSource and its concentrating solar power technology. The company is one of dozens of solar start-up hopefuls, many of which have struggled to commercialize their technologies at scale. The Ivanpah project will have 170,000 software-controlled heliostats, or mirrors, which will track the sun and direct light onto a tower. The heat from the concentrated sunlight turns water into steam which is piped to a turbine to generate electricity. BrightSource Energy needed to make adjustments to its original design to reduce the amount of water used and had to do extensive environmental reviews to minimize impact on the desert ecosystem. To cool steam, BrightSource will use air cooling, rather than water cooling, a change which makes it far more water-efficient than other solar thermal technologies. The company says the project will double the amount of solar thermal-generated electricity in the world. The project started construction last fall and will be done in phases between this year and 2013.The power supplied by the plant will be sold to California utilities Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison. California utilities are purchasing electricity from renewable sources to meet a state mandate to increase electricity from renewables to 33 percent by 2020.The project will avoid 640,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, the equivalent to taking more than 120,000cars off the road, according to the Energy Department.Updated at 4:00 p.m. PT with additional details and clarification on the size of the plant. A more recent image was also added.

0 Vote(s)

Skype is still working to right itself from a major outage that began yesterday. The company said earlier this morning that about 5 million people were able to access its Internet telephony service, and "that number is increasing all the time." The only issue is, that figure puts total use at about 30 percent of its normal amount.Skype then followed that posting up with another this morning, saying that it's seeing "evidence of a significant increase in the number of people online." It currently estimates that 10 million people are using its service, which would still potentially mean millions of users are shut out. As of this writing, the Skype program on myMac, which is working properly, claims over 8 million people are online. In either case, the number of users online is still much lower than it would be if everything was working properly.Even as the situation improves, users should expect some hiccups: "Please note that some features may not work as reliably as expected--peoples' online status may be slow to update, and instant messages might not be delivered as quickly as they are normally. Group video calling will take longer to return to normal," Skype said."We're sincerely sorry for this disruption," Skype wrote on its blog today. "Like you, all of us at Skype rely on Skype every day."Skype's massive outage started yesterday. At the time, the company said that several of its "supernodes" went down, causing the service to become inaccesible for millions of users. It expected to have the service running normally within "a few hours" of that announcement. It then said yesterday afternoon that Skype was "now returning to normal." It seems that at least so far, those claims were a bit premature. We will continue to share details here as we learn more.

0 Vote(s)

Although I was resistant to Facebook at first, staunchly clinging to MySpace until all but three of my friends ceased to use it (thereby making it all but pointless), there is one thing in particular that has kept Facebook in my favor since I made the switch. The social-networking service provides an excellent medium for sharing content, particularly quick bits of information via links posted to your Wall or that of a friend. The ability to display (or hide) photos is also quite handy. But if there's one place Facebook has failed to excel, it's in the music department--MySpace has it all over its competitor in that regard. Sure, you can post Pandora stations to your wall (but only yours) and share links to YouTube videos of individual tracks, but recommending a single, playable track--or even an audio-only playlist--to friends is an inelegant process at best. So what's a Facebooking music lover to doHmm...and I have to get my friends to join(Credit:Screenshot by Jasmine France)The seemingly obvious answer is the rally call generally applied to theiPhone: there's an app for that. Most recently, Music WithMe updated its Facebook application to offer a more seamless, user-friendly experience. The app lets you recommend individual tracks and playlists from your own iTunes library, with the new version offering more details on each playlist and including album art for the songs. You can also listen to a 30-second preview of each track, "like" playlists and tracks, and purchase directly from iTunes. As you may have ascertained, this option is imperfect at best. For one thing, you can share only things from iTunes, which is limiting for those who prefer to manage their music with other programs. Also, your friends can listen only to 30 second previews of a track rather than the full song. Finally, you can share only music that you have in your library, so if you just happen upon a song or album that you have yet to download, you can't quickly recommend it to a friend or post it on your wall.So while I appreciate the effort put forth by apps like Music WithMe to make Facebook more music-friendly, it and the others I've come across fall short. Is there some great method for sharing or recommending music on Facebook that I'm missing Or are you also disappointed by the options available Please let me know in the comments below.

0 Vote(s)

It's unclear as to whether this refers solely to smartphones or whether this also involves yet-to-be-released tablet devices. As one of the biggest hardware manufacturers producing Android phones (from the successful Droid line to the discontinuedNexus One), this is a promising sign for the Google-built mobile operating system. The brains behind the robot restaurant is the Shandong Dalu Science and Technology Company, which plans to roll out more robo-servers for the eatery, which can accommodate 100 diners at the same time.
If Carbon Sciences succeeds, some of us will be driving on gasoline sourced from a landfill. The Santa Barbara, Calif.-based company today said that it has made technical progress on a process that would take two greenhouse gases--methane and carbon dioxide--and convert them into gasoline.(Credit:Carbon Sciences)The goal is to take methane--the main ingredient in natural gas--and carbon dioxide and synthesize them through a chemical process to make a liquid fuel that can stand in for gasoline.Carbon Sciences said its tests indicate that its catalyst can work at a sufficient conversion rate and is durable. The company didn't disclose what the catalysts are, but said they are made from common metals. If successful, the process would allow yield liquid fuel without petroleum. Landfills would be good sources of methane and carbon dioxide because they give off large amounts of these heat-trapping gases, company CEO Byron Elton said in an interview with CNN. Carbon dioxide could also be sourced from power plants and methane could also be created by gasifying biomass, such as algae, according to the company. The gasoline would be less polluting than crude oil-derived gasoline because it does not contain smog-causing air pollutants. There are a number of other companies and researchers experimenting with so-called gas-to-liquids technology. Carbon Sciences says that its process differs with traditional gas-to-liquids approaches because carbon dioxide will react directly with methane through it catalysts, and make it less energy intensive and less expensive.Carbon Sciences still has not demonstrated its technology at a scale beyond lab tests. It's one of several companies that is pursuing technology to use carbon dioxide as a feedstock in other products, such as liquid fuels or plastic.

0 Vote(s)

According to DCist, it seems that some candidate organizations handed out these hand stamps in order to make things easier for voters who wanted to elect a write-in candidate. They don't happen to mention that the stamps work rather better when you're writing in on a paper ballot rather than an electronic voting machine. You might think that this is an apocryphal story that has been peddled by supporters of one party or another to discredit Fenty (who garnered nearly 28,000 write-in votes but didn't win). But might I say that you need only to go to the District of Columbia Board of Elections and Ethics' Twitter feed to see confirmation of this story for yourself.Or you can just look at my screenshot. One day, everyone will grasp technology's nuances.
Executives from Automattic, the company behind blogging service WordPress, recently took the stage at the Le Web conference in Paris, where they shared some details about how the company is doing, as recounted in TechCrunch. The big takeaway: Automattic has signed up a long list of publishers who reach a huge audience, but it hasna4a4t succeeded in turning that into equally an impressive source of revenue.Specifically, Automattic founder Matt Mullenweg and chief executive Toni Schneider said there are 30 million publishers using WordPress, and that 300 million unique visitors come to sites hosted on WordPress.com. (The WordPress.com hosting service is the main way that Automattic makes money from WordPress, which is an open source technology &8212' VentureBeat, for example, uses WordPress but is not hosted on WordPress.com.) That translates into a little less than $1 million in revenue each month, they said.Add those numbers up for an entire year, and WordPress brings in less than $12 million in annual revenue &8212' citing anonymous sources, TechCrunch said the actual number is about $10 million.Mullenweg and Schneider said thata4a4s gotten the company to the break-even point. They also said that Automattic is more focused on growth than revenue, so presumably that revenue should start going up quickly when the focus shifts. That will certainly need to happen if Automattic hopes to have an initial public offering &8212' which Mullenweg and Schneider implied when they said their goal is not to be acquired.Automattic has raised more than $30 million in funding.Next Story: Xing snaps up event startup Amiando Previous Story: Google turns its year in review into a Google commercialPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: blogging, wordpress, Wordpress.comCompanies: automatticPeople: Matt Mullenweg, Toni Schneider Tags: blogging, wordpress, Wordpress.comCompanies: automatticPeople: Matt Mullenweg, Toni SchneiderAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Tablet growth is set to explode this year, and businesses will certainly account for much of it. Companies are expected to purchase more than 10 million tablets in 2011, Reuters reports, based on a market forecast from consulting firm Deloitte. The projection is in line with much of what wea4a4re seeing already. Applea4a4s iPad is already being widely adopted by businesses &8212' the company said 80 companies on the Fortune 100 list are testing or deploying it &8212' and Apple COO Tim Cook went as far to say that he envisions an entire business run from one iPad. With RIMa4a4s BlackBerry PlayBook coming this year, even stodgy enterprise outfits may start considering tablets. And of course, we have Android 3.0 tablets on the horizon like the Motorola Xoom.Healthcare and retail companies will likely lead enterprise tablet purchases, accounting for as much as 5 million units this year. Thata4a4s not too surprising &8212' personal digital assistants and previous generations of tablet devices found some success in healthcare, and the potential uses for tablets in retail environments are widespread.Deloitte expects tablet sales to reach 50 million this year, while smartphone sales will reach 375 million units. Strong growth in both tablets and smartphones will &8212' for the first time ever &8212' push down PC sales to less than half of the computing device market. This post was sponsored by WatchMouse, a service which monitors websites, Web applications, and web API&'s for availability and performance from an external perspective.
