Web sites hawking pirated software and other digital goods are luring in about 53 billion visits each year. That's according to a report (PDF) released yesterday by MarkMonitor, a company that protects online brands for its corporate customers.Piracy sites made up the majority of the 53 billion visits, while those selling counterfeit goods such as fake prescription drugs and luxury items accounted for a considerably smaller amount of traffic: about 92 million visits a year.MarkMonitor identified 43 sites as engaging in digital piracy. Among them, three sites--Rapidshare.com, Megavideo.com, and Megaupload.com--accounted for about 21 billion visits per year.Of course, such sites would argue that they discourage the uploading and sharing of copyrighted material through their respective terms of service. In response to MarkMonitor's findings, RapidShare.com issued the following statement, which it e-mailed to CNET:"We have read with incomprehension the study of American enterprise brand protection company MarkMonitor which names RapidShare the world's biggest online piracy platform. This defamation of RapidShare as a digital piracy site is absurd and we reserve the right to take legal action against MarkMonitor. RapidShare is a legitimate company that offers its customers fast, simple and secure storage and management of large amounts of data via our servers."The site also faulted the authors of the MarkMonitor report for concluding that RapidShare is the biggest digital piracy site based on page visits, ignoring the fact that most individual customers and businesses use the site for legitimate reasons to share files with friends and colleagues."Of course, that does not mean that we are turning a blind eye to the fact that some people misuse our service to upload copyright-protected works to our servers," RapidShare added. "However, these users are in the absolute minority compared with those who use our services to pursue perfectly legitimate interests. Furthermore, we take a great many steps to prevent and combat copyright infringements"In other findings, MarkMonitor identified 48 sites as selling counterfeit goods. Of them, 26 sites were found to offer counterfeit prescription drugs and grabbed about 51 million visits each year. Another 21 sites were discovered hawking phony luxury goods and drew in more than 36 million visits per year. The company conducted the study after discussions with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce."Online intellectual property theft--whether it is the sale of counterfeit shoes and fake drugs or the illegal distribution of movies, music, and software--steals jobs, threatens consumers, and hinders our economic growth," Steve Tepp, senior director of Internet counterfeiting and piracy for the Global Intellectual Property Center at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said in a statement. "We have known for a long time that rogue websites, those dedicated to piracy and counterfeiting, were flourishing at our expense. Now we begin to see the staggering scope of this problem--more than 53 billion visits on rogue sites."MarkMonitor conducted its study last year, starting with a sample of 22 brands from such categories as prescription drugs, luxury goods, music, films, and athletic equipment. The company said its automated scans found more than 10,000 suspicious sites that were then filtered to include only dedicated e-commerce and digital content delivery sites. Those sites were ranked by traffic using data from Alexa. MarkMonitor said it then analyzed the sites further to pinpoint the ones that met specific criteria for hawking pirated content or fake goods, which narrowed down the finalists to 90 unique domains.

0 Vote(s)

Motion control systems were just one battleground in 2010. (Credit:CNET)So here we are, looking at the end of 2010, a year that's been fairly exciting in the personal-technology world. Led by theiPad, tablets became a common sight, sounding a warning call to the Netbook business. E-readers got more affordable and more widespread, and many phone makers stepped up to take on theiPhone 4, which was leaked in the spring, dramatically, after an Apple tech left a prototype in a bar. But where there's innovation there's often conflict. Companies like Apple and Google and Microsoft are again going head-to-head in many markets. Motion control gaming systems, digital TV, and even e-books were competitive battlegrounds. The comments on Crave have at times been like combat zones, too, with our wonderfully engaged readers going back and forth over which tech is best, worst, most promising, dumbest, and so on. It's said that you pick your battles, and this is your chance to do just that. Which of these tech battles of 2010 got you most riled up Or maybe there's one we missed. If so, let us know in the comments section.

0 Vote(s)

AT&T Mobility, Verizon Wireless, and T-Mobile are creating a mobile payment network designed to help consumers more easily pay for items at stores using their cell phones, the trio announced today.(Credit:BusinessWire)The three mobile companies are building the network, known as Isis, with the initial goal of setting up a mobile payment system in which people can use cell phones to pay for items directly at a retailer, known as point-of-sale purchases. The system will use a technology called near-field communication (NFC), which provides short-range and encrypted wireless communication between different devices. The companies said the system will include strong security and privacy protection. The new mobile payment service is expected to roll out over the next 18 months. No doubt not coincidentally, Google CEO EricSchmidt showed off an upcoming Android phone with a near-fieldcommunication chip yesterday, perhaps the NexusS. Isis has already tapped two major financial players to join the effort. Discover Financial Services will work with Isis to develop the overall infrastructure for the mobile payment network, while Barclaycard US, part of Barclays, will be the first credit issuer on the network. Meanwhile, Isis is leaving the door open to other banks, financial institutions, and wireless carriers that want to be part of the new venture.Former GE Capital executive Michael Abbott has been hired as Isis CEO. Beyond the initial work that Isis is planning, Abbott has lofty goals for the system."Our mobile commerce network, through relationships with merchants, will provide an enhanced, more convenient, more personalized shopping experience for consumers," Abbott said in a statement. "While mobile payments will be at the core of our offering, it is only the start. We plan to create a mobile wallet that ultimately eliminates the need for consumers to carry cash, credit and debit cards, reward cards, coupons, tickets, and transit passes."

0 Vote(s)

As it faces more business and political pressure, WikiLeaks has beefed up its web infrastructure so that it will become harder to take down. The WikiLeaks site has been under constant cyber attack since it published 251,000 secret U.S. diplomatic cables. CNET reported that the site has quietly shifted its infrastructure outside of the U.S. to a web provider in Toronto. It also uses 14 companies to direct users to the WikiLeaks.ch site, so that it has redundancy in case attackers take down one of the companies. U.S. companies from Amazon to MasterCard have been pressured to drop WikiLeaks because it posts &''stolen content.&''WikiLeaks has also faced distributed denial of services (DDoS) attacks, which is the reason it was dropped by EveryDNS.net domain name service provider. WikiLeaks has turned to the Swedish Pirate Party for DNS service for server help. The number of mirror sites, which replicate WikiLeaks content, is now more than 1,000. With these measures, some say WikiLeaks may be immune to takedown. The reinforcements arrived as WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange faces extradition on sex charges in Sweden. He was arrested yesterday in London and denies that he did anything wrong. He says a hearing is set for Dec. 14. Politicians are putting more pressure on businesses to sever ties with WikiLeaks, which some members of Congress want to designate a &''terrorist&'' organization. Meanwhile, hackers associated with the 4chan image site have attacked sites belonging to those who have cut off WikiLeaks.PayPal executive Osama Bedier said today that PayPal blocked WikiLeaks payments and froze its account because it complied with a governmental request to deny service to WikiLeaks. That request was not sent directly to PayPal. Rather, the State Department sent a letter directly to WikiLeaks. The odds favor WikiLeaks at this point. The internet was designed to withstand nuclear attack, with many communications routes in case one went down. WikiLeaks is now set up in the same way.Next Story: Technology 500: Tech industry is on an upward swing Previous Story: AT&038'T and Elster announce smart grid offeringPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: DNSCompanies: 4chan, Amazon, Mastercard, WikiLeaksPeople: Julian Assange Tags: DNSCompanies: 4chan, Amazon, Mastercard, WikiLeaksPeople: Julian AssangeDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Mobile video chat company Tango announced today that it has updated its iPhone OS app to support the fourth-generation iPod Touch, which features front and rear-facing cameras like the iPhone 4.With this update, Tango is now a bigger threat to Apple&'s own FaceTime video chat, which is built in to the iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod Touch. The big difference with Tango is that users can also video chat over 3G (FaceTime is restricted to WiFi only), and they can video chat with friends on Android phones. Tango&'s interface is as simple and easy to use as FaceTime, and it&'s also easy to find your friends on the service as the app automatically combs through your phone&'s contacts. We reported in October that Tango&'s iPhone and Android apps were wildly popular, garnering 1 million downloads in a mere 10 days after they launched. Tango hit 3 million downloads by the end of November. The company tells me that its usage doubled over the Thanksgiving holiday.Tango says that 70 percent of its members perform spontaneous video calls with their friends and family, and they do so more than once a week. I argued earlier this year that the iPhone 4 would spur on innovation in mobile video chat, and we&'re clearly seeing that happen with Tango&'s apps.In a video chat interview, Tangoa4a4s executives mentioned that the service is using peer-to-peer (P2P) technology to handle the video calls. That means the service is highly scalable and doesna4a4t rely entirely on the speed of the companya4a4s servers. Tango has six patents pending surrounding its video chat technology, three of which are related specifically to its P2P technology implementation.A recent Android update allows Tango&'s app to take advantage of Cloud to Device Messaging (C2DM) technology, a feature of the Android OS that lets push notifications get sent for Tango calls without having to run the app in the background &8212' saving precious battery life in the process.Based in Palo Alto, Calif., Tango has raised $5 million in funding from individual investors including Bill Hambrecht, Michael Birch, Bill Tai, and Daniel Scheinman.Next Story: Nvidia claims your computer will be brain-dead if it doesn&'t use graphics chips Previous Story: Chumby Industries launches a web discovery app on Android devicesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, FaceTime, iOS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch, video chatCompanies: Apple, Tango Tags: Android, FaceTime, iOS, iPhone 4, iPod Touch, video chatCompanies: Apple, TangoDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Ustream has big plans for live video streaming on Android phones using Verizon&'s 4G network, as well as for viewing video streams on big screens.Yesterday at the Consumer Electronics Show, the company gave me a brief demonstration of its new offerings. Ustream has developed a slick new Android app that can both broadcast live video, as well as view and interact with live video streams. Previously, the company offerred two separate apps that offered broadcasting and streaming capabilities. As you can see in the video below, the live video stream running on Verizon&'s LTE 4G network looks smooth and surprisingly clear, even on a large TV screen. Ustream says that its Android app will be included in all of Verizon&'s 4G phones. Other Android users can still take advantage of the new app, but Ustream says it was specifically fine-tuned to take advantage of Verizon&'s faster 4G network.Additionally, the company has developed a large screen viewing interface meant for Google TV, dubbed the Ustream Lounge. It&'s accessible by any web browser by simply visiting ustream.tv/lounge. Like YouTube&'s Leanback and Vimeo&'s Couch Mode, it&'s meant to be consumed from the couch. The Lounge has the potential to open up Ustreams content to an entirely new set of users. The company also says that its programming will be integrated in Panasonic&'s televisions with its Viera Connect IPTV software later this year. It&'s also introducing an app for Boxee&'s web video platform.Check out a demo of Ustream&'s Lounge below, as well as the new Android app running on HTC&'s upcoming Thunderbolt LTE 4G phone:Previous Story: Bugs feast on latest BlackBerry app from FoursquarePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: 4G, Android, HTC Thunderbolt, LTECompanies: ustream, Verizon Tags: 4G, Android, HTC Thunderbolt, LTECompanies: ustream, VerizonDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
