"I'm currently in a standoff...kinda ugly, but ready for whatever."This is, perhaps, not the average Facebook update. But it seems that it's one that was posted by Jason Valdez, 36, while he reportedly held a woman hostage for 16 hours.According to the Associated Press, Valdez held the woman in a motel in Ogden, Utah. While he was there, he used Facebook to send messages to his friends and his family. It seems that Valdez had barricaded himself and the hostage in the motel room after the police attempted to serve a warrant for a felony drug offense. However, during the standoff, he even posted pictures of himself and her to Facebook, with the immortal update: "Got a cute 'Hostage' huh."In reply, friends warned him about SWAT team members that were positioned in the bushes. It didn't end well. When the SWAT team stormed the motel room, Valdez reportedly shot himself and is now in critical condition. However, the Facebook posts--and the replies--make for macabre reading. For example, Valdez posted: "I'm currently in a stand off wit these shady [epithet] from old, kinda ugly but ready for whatever, I love u guyz and if I don't make it out of here alive that I'm in a better place and u were all great friends."To which one acquaintance replied: "dude you're an idiot."(Credit:Screenshot: Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)And when Valdez posted: "They shut our phones down but were okay, everyones comments mean alot. But how this ends is on the cops now. And my HOSTAGE as they call her is perfectly fine and holding it down wit me," there were a myriad comments begging him to get his head straight. For example, from another friend: "Jason please do what right! Remember you have friends and family that love you! walk out ALIVE! XOXOXO`S."The police are reportedly not yet sure whether to charge some of Valdez's friends with obstruction after they used Facebook to warn him of police activity.

0 Vote(s)

I confess to having a soft spot for much of Microsoft's recent advertising. Mainly because it bothers to appeal to my soft spot. The company decided to use the glamour of the Golden Globes ceremony to remind people of their innate love for the underdog. In this case, the struggling, table-waiting, eating-out-of-a-tin actor. In new ads, we see what appears to be an audition. Actors express their love of their craft, their commitment to it. They end with a different Microsoft brand "precongratulating" the Golden Globes stars of tomorrow and offering the tagline "Be What's Next."The most moving line is offered by an actor who says, "I'd rather fail at this than succeed at doing anything else."In showing such vulnerable emotions, Microsoft is, perhaps, trying to help you change your perception that it is this big, nasty monolith with all the warm feelings of a Nordic Genghis Khan. Perhaps it is reminding you that Windows Phone and Bing are charming underdogs who, one day, with your undying support, could win the Golden Globes of mobile and search. It is pleasantly uplifting to see Microsoft continuing its sudden affection for charm as its offensive tool. What do you think Apple has used for the last 20 years Brute selling force Oh, you cynic, you.

0 Vote(s)

RIM announced the WebWorks SDK in September 2010 when it unveiled the BlackBerry PlayBook.(Credit:James Martin/CNET)BALI--Research In Motion is looking to harness the best of today's Web technologies including HTML5 and JavaScript, to bridge the gap between development efforts for its BlackBerry smartphones and the soon-to-be-released PlayBooktablet.Tyler Lessard, vice president of global alliances and developer relations at RIM, said the Canadian smartphone manufacturer is intent on bringing the "Web to mobile" by incorporating existing Web technologies into its WebWorks SDK for Tablet OS.Released today, the beta version of the software development kit will give Web and mobile developers skilled in HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS the tools to create apps for RIM's upcoming PlayBook tablet device, said Lessard, during his keynote presentation here at RIM's first Asia-based developer conference, BlackBerry DevCon Asia 2011.Additionally, he noted that developers will be able to create "super apps" that are derived from Web technologies as well as tap underlying native application programming interfaces (APIs) for a "more integrated, always-on" experience.Read more of " RIM taps Web tech to drive mobile development" at ZDNet Asia.

0 Vote(s)
