Apple's mobile products seem to be so popular that even older models are outselling the competition, according to reports from investment firm Canaccord Genuity. The iPhone 3GS continues to outsell rival smartphones.(Credit:Corinne Schulze/CNET)In a series of research notes sent to investors earler this week, technology analyst Michael Walkley shared his findings on how Apple fared in the mobile retail market in April. The analyst confirmed that theiPhone 4 was the top-selling smartphone at both AT&amp'T and Verizon last month, whileiPad 2 sales stayed strong as consumers overwhelmingly chose it in favor of rivaltablets. But thanks to discounted prices, even the iPhone 3GS and the first-generation iPad are outselling the competition, according to Walkley. Specifically, the iPhone 3GS outsold both the Motorola Atrix 4G and the HTC Inspire 4G at AT&amp'T, while the 16GB and 32GB original iPads were sold out at Verizon less than two weeks following the debut of the iPad 2. "Interestingly, our April checks indicated continued strong demand for the iPhone 3GS at AT&amp'T and iPad 1 at Verizon, as these older generation products with reduced prices often outsold new Android products," wrote Walkley in his note. "We believe this highlights Apple's significant competitive advantage, and these older products help Apple offer a tiered pricing strategy at key channels and the older Apple products are still very competitive versus new competitor products." Through his April retail checks, Walkely also confirmed ongoing issues with 4G-based Android smartphones, specifically related to their limited battery life when 4G is enabled. As a result, the HTC Thunderbolt, which enjoyed strong initial demand ran into slower sales and higher return rates in April, which in turn helped bump up sales of the iPhone. As more Verizon customers upgrade over the next several quarters, Walkley believes, the iPhone will remain the top-selling smartphone at Verizon throughout the rest of the year. And at AT&amp'T, new Android smartphones are grabbing market share not from the iPhone but from Windows Phone devices. That trend has helped the iPhone remain a top seller and ensured strong demand for the iPhone 3GS, especially given its competitive price of $49. Looking at the tablet market, the "modest sales" of the Motorola Xoom and RIM's BlackBerry Playbook were a sign to Walkley of the inability of those companies to replicate Apple's overall ecosystem and quality. With even Android smartphone users opting for the iPad over an Android tablet, the analyst expects Apple to continue its dominant lead in the tablet market this year and next.

0 Vote(s)

The Federal Communications Commission took two important steps this week to free up more wireless spectrum for wireless broadband services. On Wednesday the agency published a list of nine companies that have been granted permission to provide a database of unlicensed "white space" spectrum that can be used by device makers and service providers to offer a service that utilizes these free airwaves. And also on Wednesday the FCC approved an order to allow a privately funded company called LightSquared to lease spectrum that was originally allocated for satellite services to use in building a terrestrial wireless service. LightSquared will use the spectrum to build a high-speed Internet network from satellite feeds. The service is aimed at companies, such as Apple and Best Buy that may want to offer mobile devices without partnering with major carriers.Wireless experts say that more spectrum is needed to fuel the growing demand of rich services and content from consumers. The FCC has been talking about the impending spectrum crisis and has been pushing for more spectrum to be made available. In the National Broadband Plan presented to Congress last year, the agency outlined a plan for freeing up 500MHz of spectrum over the next decade, with 300MHz being freed up within five years. The agency expects to get the spectrum from various places, including some from TV broadcasters, which are no longer using spectrum that has been allocated to them. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has proposed a voluntary auction in which broadcasters could give up spectrum in exchange for sharing in the profits of the auction with the government. The FCC report indicates that spectrum could be worth more than $120 billion at auction, which is twice what excess spectrum was worth in 2008.The white space spectrum as well as reallocating spectrum that is set aside for other uses is another way to free additional spectrum. And each of the orders the agency issued yesterday with respect to wireless spectrum will help do that. The "white space" spectrum is 300MHz to 400MHz of unused spectrum that has been used previously as buffers between TV channels. The FCC opened up the spectrum for unlicensed use and looked to private companies to maintain a database of spectrum users. Companies, such as Microsoft and Dell are already developing products to use the spectrum. In order to prevent interference, a database is needed so that devices can search for unused white spectrum in different markets. Google is one of nine companies that has won the FCC's approval to build and manage these data bases. Other companies that will also be able to do this are Comsearch, Frequency Finder, KB Enterprises and LS Telcom, Key Bridge, Neustar, Spectrum Bridge, Telcordia Technologies and WSdb. These companies will compile a database that shows frequencies are available in given areas. And then the companies will approve devices for use in those areas.Because the white space spectrum is unlicensed, it will allow new players to more easily enter the wireless market. So rather than large cell phone companies or even cable companies, which have spent millions of dollars on wireless spectrum licenses, smaller companies could build a service around the unlicensed spectrum.Google's involvement with the database is important because the company has been pushing to free up this spectrum for years. Some critics have been skeptical about Google's involvement. They warned that Google might unfairly use information made available to the database administrators, But the FCC didn't seem to feel these concerns were enough to keep Google from administering a database. Google's Android software will likely be used in several devices that take advantage of the white space spectrum. The databases won't be active for several weeks. Companies that have been approved as administrators have until February 28 to submit additional information about their databases. And on March 10 the FCC will hold a workshop to review the agency's rules. There will then be a 45-day trial period for each database administrator. If the companies pass the trial, they'll be able to operate their database for five years. The FCC has asked all administrators to submit additional information about their database plans by Feb. 28 and attend a March 10 workshop to go over the agency's rules. Administrators will then undergo a 45-day trial period. If they pass the trial, they will be able to operate their databases for five-year terms.

0 Vote(s)

In September, Fujifilm showed off the X100 at the Photokina trade show in Germany. Aside from several mockup units and prototypes on display, the company was tight-lipped when pressed for more details. Since then, the hype for this camera has waned, but the firm just revived interest by releasing more information regarding the FinePix's specifications.(Credit:Fujifilm) According to the Japanese camera maker, the X100 will have three focusing modes: manual, single autofocus, and continuous autofocus. In manual-focus setting, photographers can rotate the focusing ring around the lens to focus on the subject. Using the hybrid viewfinder, users can magnify a portion of the scene to check if the frame is sharp. There will also be a dedicated RAW button. When you press the button in JPEG mode, the camera will capture in both RAW and JPEG. Included with the snapper is the SilkyPix RAW software which lets users convert RAW photos to common formats such as JPEG. When asked why Fujifilm didn't employ the EXR sensor in the X100, the company said such sensors are typically used for compacts, which utilize a much smaller sensor. The X100 has an APS-C-sized sensor and an F2.0 lens, which will help photographers get better pictures in low-light environments. The Fujifilm X100 is expected to launch next March if earlier reports are accurate, but the company has yet to announce the price. However, it was rumored that this camera will retail for approximately $1,000. (Source: Crave Asia via 1001 Noisy Cameras and Photography Blog)

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Google)Google has begun shipping a feature called False Start in its Chrome browser to speed up secure communications.False Start essentially cuts out one set of the back-and-forth conversation needed to set up a secure channel between a Web browser and Web pages. Such secure channels use technology called SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or TLS (Transport Layer Security), and a Web site using it shows an address beginning with HTTPS rather than HTTP."The latest releases of Chrome now enable a feature called SSL False Start," said Google programmer Mike Belshe in a blog post Sunday. "As of this writing, Chrome is the only browser implementing it."Belshe's tests showed it cutting off less than a tenth of a second. That may not sound like much, but bear in mind that Web developers strive to shave off any amount they can and that the security handshake often must be completed more than once for a single Web site because of multiple secured elements.False Start is one of a handful of technologies Google is building into Chrome to try to make the Web faster. Faster encrypted communications are a particular focus, especially with the debut of the Firesheep software that can extract personal data from unsecured Web communications.False Start is a nice technology because unlike many communication improvements, it requires an improvement to the browser but not to the other end of the line. But there's a wrinkle: some Web sites can't handle False Start, and they don't fail gracefully. Thus, Chrome has a blacklist to disable the feature for these sites. According to the Chrome source code, that list is 5,106 sites long so far.

0 Vote(s)

Windows Home Server, running &34'Vail.&34'(Credit:Microsoft)One of Windows Home Server's staunchest allies is now moving on.HP has decided to discontinue its MediaSmart Server line of products featuring Windows Home Server. The news was confirmed by Microsoft on its Home Server Blog yesterday."HP has told us they do not plan to provide a platform for Windows Home Server, codenamed 'Vail,'" Microsoft wrote on its blog.Microsoft went on to say that HP plans to sell its existing MediaSmart Server platform through the rest of the year "and will honor service support agreements."HP reportedly confirmed the news to MediaSmartServer.net, a site that focuses on Windows Home Server. The publication, cites a member of the HP StorageWorks team, who reportedly told the publication that HP "is transferring the MediaSmart Server team to the Palm Global Business Unit to help with the future development of WebOS."HP did not immediately respond to a request for comment.Losing HP's support for Windows Home Server is an obvious blow to Microsoft. But in the same blog post, the software giant said that Vail will still have support from Acer and Tranquil PC, along with "many system builders.""We are entirely committed to the future of Windows Home Server V1 and V2," Tranquil PC managing director D.J. Thompson said in the post. "We will also ensure that there is a suitable transition path from V1 to V2 for our existing and new clients."Microsoft has faced some adversity with its Windows Home Server as of late.Last week, the company announced that it was removing the drive extender feature in beta versions of Windows Home Server, as well as Windows Small Business Server 2011 Essentials and Windows Storage Server 2008 R2 Essentials, starting next year. The feature allowed users to quickly add hard drives of different sizes to their devices to increase total storage. After announcing its decision, the Windows Home Server team faced angry users who were upset to see the feature go. Microsoft then wrote another post on its blog in response, saying that the decision to remove the drive extender feature was "incredibly hard."

0 Vote(s)

A couple weeks ago, we did a preview of Reeder for Mac, a new RSS desktop client. In my mind, Reeder for iPhone/iPad is easily the best RSS reading app out there, and Reeder for Mac continues that tradition. But now you can find out for yourself. Developer Silvio Rizzi has released the first public beta today right here.Rizzi is careful to note that this is just &''Draft 1&8243' of the software, but I&'ve been using the alpha builds for weeks, and it&'s pretty polished. Some key features, such as feed management, are missing. But because Reeder is built on top of Google Reader, you can manage it all from there. Rizzi notes that both feed management and more importantly, search, are coming soon.Alongside the Reeder for Mac beta roll out today, Rizzi also managed to launch the latest version of Reeder for iPhone as well. 2.2 brings a few nice additions, but two things stand out about all else. First, there&'s finally a way to share articles to Facebook. Second, there&'s a new option to send an article to Instapaper or ReadItLater with one swipe of your finger. The latter allows you to replace the ability to &''Star&'' an item with the ability to send it to one of those services. If you change this in the options, one swipe to the left will save any article instantly for you to read later a4" pretty nifty. So now that Reeder for Mac is out there in beta form, the next obvious question is: will there be a PC version &''Sorry, that&'s not planned,&'' Rizzi wrote earlier today on Twitter. He did tell us a couple weeks ago that he was considering releasing the app in the upcoming Mac App Store though.CrunchBase InformationReederInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Leave it up to hackers to unlock the full potential of Barnes and Noblea4a4s Nook Color, a device that is effectively an Android tablet currently trapped in e-reader clothing. The hacking process involves a4Arootinga4 your Nook Color, which lets you modify the devicea4a4s software, as detailed by the site Blog Kindle.Several minutes of work can grant you access to the Android market and a wealth of apps on the Nook Color, including Amazona4a4s Kindle app. If successful, you can effectively turn the $250 Nook Color into an Android tablet almost on par with Samsunga4a4s Galaxy Tab, which retails for over $400 (and usually with a monthly cellular contract). For Windows users, the rooting tool is a simple application that does most of the work for you. Mac and Linux users will have to break out their command line terminals to get the job done. Hardware-wise, you only need a microSD memory card (larger than 128MB) and a dedicated card reader for your computer (many laptops have these built-in).After successfully rooting your Nook Color youa4a4ll have access to the Android Market, as well as some apps like YouTube and Gmail, in the devicea4a4s a4AExtrasa4 folder. As with any hacking method, therea4a4s always the risk that you can permanently damage your device in the process. Additionally, ita4a4s unknown how this hack will affect the Nook Colora4a4s ability to receive updates from Barnes and Noble. But given the end result, the hack certainly seems worth the risk.Blog Kindle reports that not every Android app works perfectly. The Kobo ebook reader app, for example, doesna4a4t seem to load its book library properly. But imperfection is a given with any hack, and we can expect these issues to be fixed over time as the hacking tools improve. We recently reported that Barnes and Noble may be preparing for a major Nook Color update that will bring with it some more Android tablet functionality, but the company has been quick to point out that it doesna4a4t ever plan to grant full access to the Android Market.Via CrunchGearNext Story: On the GreenBeat: Tessera sells 850-megawatt Calico project, GreenVolts aims to raise $39 million Previous Story: 6 social media business trends to watch out for in 2011PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, ereaders, hacks, Nook Color, tabletsPeople: Barnes And Noble, Google Tags: Android, ereaders, hacks, Nook Color, tabletsPeople: Barnes And Noble, GoogleDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Scvngr, the maker of a check-in app that asks users to complete activity challenges, today announced it has secured a second round of funding for $15 million, according tothe company blog. Investors included Balderton Capital, with participation from previous investors Google Ventures and Highland Capital Partners.Founder and chief executiveSeth Priebatsch told me that the company&'s biggest motivation for this round was getting Balderton Capital partner Barry Maloney on boardto help with future international plans. Balderton is Benchmark Capital&'s former European affiliate, now independent for several years, and Maloney has experience in the mobile industry having been chief executive of Ireland&'s second largest GSM mobile operator, EsatDigifone.&''Right now Scvngr hasa great international infrastructure thanks to its partnership with Google Places, but it&'s not an international company by any means,&'' said Priebatsch. With Maloney on its board, &''when we&'re ready to do a major international push, we&'ll have the expertise we&'ll need to make sure we do it right.&''For consumers, Scvngr is a fun way of getting over check-in fatigue &8212' the feeling of malaise after users discover there&'s not much more involved with most check-in apps than announcing your location to your friends. Scvngr&'s app adds activities or challenges to the mix. For example, a user can complete one of the default challengesby taking a picture or checking in with a group to a location. For businesses, the service allows them to give customers a new way of engaging with a store and providing an incentive, like a coupon or percentage off a purchase. The company had a good year in 2010, including partnering with major beverage distributor Coca-Cola give users who check-in to certain Simon Malls across United States the opportunity to earn points and rewards like gift cards and other Coke-branded merchandise. Other partnerships include the Boston Celtics, New England Patriots and Princeton University. The Boston-based company, founded in 2008, previously raised a first round of funding for $4 million,as well as a small seed round.
