Paramount Pictures offers &34'Super 8&34' on Twitter first.Paramount Pictures is looking to social media to help promote its upcoming film, "Super 8."The studio premiered the trailer for the film, which is being produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by "Lost" creator J.J. Abrams, on Twitter early this morning.Set in a small town in 1979, "Super 8" tells the story of kids who must endure the arrival of an unknown force wreaking havoc on their community following a horrific train crash. It's scheduled to be released on June 10.Paramount says that this is the first time it has launched a trailer on Twitter. It's also the first time Twitter has been the original home to the first run of a theatrical preview. Most importantly, however, Paramount's launch is perhaps another sign that film studios are starting to realize that social media could play a central role in the popularity of movies going forward."The partnership creates a new viral means of distributing a trailer to fans first on Twitter and allows them to share amongst their peer networks on a global scale," Paramount Pictures said in a statement.Paramount's launch of the "Super 8" trailer on Twitter is the second social-related move film studios have made this week.On Monday, Warner Bros. announced that it would start testing film sales and rentals on Facebook to gauge interest in people watching movies away from traditional streaming services, like Netflix. The next day, the social network's users were able to pay about 30 Facebook credits, or about $3, to rent "The Dark Knight.""Making our films available through Facebook is a natural extension of our digital distribution efforts," Warner Bros. Digital Distribution President Thomas Gewecke said in a statement earlier this week. "It gives consumers a simple, convenient way to access and enjoy our films through the world's largest social network.""The Dark Knight" is still available to rent on Facebook. Those interested in checking out the trailer for "Super 8" instead can do so on the film's Twitter page. The video had been viewed more than 120,000 times as of this writing.

0 Vote(s)

When Craigslist withdrew from the adult services business last year, some wondered whether the prostitution business would be driven to less obvious and, perhaps, more dangerous places. However, a Columbia University professor is suggesting that the business might have gravitated to somewhere even more obvious: Facebook.Sociology professor Sudhir Venkatesh published the results of his work among New York prostitutes on Wired. And it makes for a stimulating insight into how technology is influencing the prostitution business.Technology seems to have made men's behavior suddenly sophisticated."No self-respecting cosmopolitan man looking for an evening of companionship is going to lean out hiscar window and call out to a woman at a traffic light," Venkatesh said.Is Facebook a new, discreet red light district(Credit:CC Pink Moose/Flickr)Instead, Venkatesh estimates that 83 percent of prostitutes have a Facebook page. Moreover, he believes that by the end of 2011, Facebook "will be the leading online recruitment space." Indeed, he says, even before Craigslist beat its retreat, Facebook was becoming a happy home for many prostitutes. With more discreet and personal access offered through cell phones, the web and Facebook in particular, he believes that prostitutes "can control their image, set their prices, and sidestep some of the pimps, madams, and other intermediaries who once took a share of the revenue."Even in 2008, he estimates that 25 percent of prostitutes' regular clients came through Facebook (compared with only 3 percent through Craigslist).Perhaps it seems obvious. If every other form of relationship is made through Facebook, why wouldn't the more professional kindWhile the professor doesn't go into details about how connections are made with prostitutes on Facebook, some might assume that they might follow the same pattern as any other friending. But perhaps it might be more complicated, with a little more inside code employed to keep things discreet.Still, if everything is becoming more personalized, as well as more social, why should anyone be surprised that Facebook might be the obvious place for a chance encounter or an adult serviceOne can only imagine that prostitutes are, unlike some, very well versed in the Facebook privacy settings.

0 Vote(s)

Microloan organization Kiva.org is adding a new set of partners to its roster of do-gooding collaborators. Skin care company Dermalogica, Lifetime Television and Movie Networks, women's clothier Eileen Fisher, and Seventh Generation eco-cleaning products are some of the partners kicking off a campaign that focuses specifically on female entrepreneurs. As part of its stated goals, the FITE project (Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship) will attempt to assist 25,000 low-income women around the world with their businesses over the next two years. The campaign targets corporate sponsors to match or otherwise contribute to what is traditionally a consumer campaign. For example, Dermalogica has pledged $1 for every consumer who enters a code online that's printed on select skin care products. On the nuts and bolts side, the independent FITE site marks the first time that Kiva's platform has been embedded into a Web site that hasn't been Kiva-owned or operated. If Kiva has its way, this is just the beginning of its open microlending platform.

0 Vote(s)

A long-awaited 3D game hit Apple&'s App Store today.Epic Games launched its Infinity Blade fantasy combat game on the iPhone and iPad today. The title is a groundbreaking visual feast that shows it&'s possible to make high-end games with rich 3D graphics on the Apple platforms. With titles like this one, dedicated game devices such as the PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo DS seem like they&'re doomed. Infinity Blade looks so good it approaches console quality. When you see something like this, it feels like the dawn of a new era on smartphones and tablets. In the past, weak graphics quality has been a turn-off for hardcore gamers. And with games like this coming out, the days may be over when small apps made by small teams can succeed. This kind of game could only come from a company with graphics wizards. And Epic Games has those aplenty, having made PC and console titles such as Gears of War, Unreal, and the upcoming Bulletstorm. Led by graphics guru Tim Sweeney, Epic has few rivals with it comes to game graphics. Its peers include id Software, which recently released the gorgeous Rage HD on the iPhone, and Valve. The Infinity Blade game&'s file size is 318.3 megabytes. Don&'t try this on your BlackBerry.Next Story: Mozilla&'s new CEO explains his love-hate relationship with Google Previous Story: Intel wins over Apple with graphics-processor combo chipPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: App Store, Infinity Blade, iPad, iPhone, iTunesCompanies: Apple, epic gamesPeople: Mike Capps, Steve Jobs Tags: App Store, Infinity Blade, iPad, iPhone, iTunesCompanies: Apple, epic gamesPeople: Mike Capps, Steve JobsDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
