AT&T is becoming the latest company to take aim at Groupon. The company's Yellow Pages service has created YP Deals. Like with Groupon, subscribers will receive a local deal delivered to their e-mail in-box each day. The YP Deals page states that it will launch "soon" in Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Los Angeles.YP Deals is the latest in a growing number of e-mail-based deals services, led by Groupon and Amazon.com-backed LivingSocial.Groupon is facing yet another competitor.Google reportedly attempted to acquire Groupon last year for $6 billion, but the deals company rejected the offer. In response, the search giant launched its own competitor last month, dubbed Google Offers. Google is testing the service in Portland, Ore., San Francisco, and New York City, among other locations.Google isn't the only major online force trying its luck in that space. In March, it was revealed that Facebook is breaking into the local discount market. The company said at the time that it would test the service in San Francisco, San Diego, Dallas, and Austin, Texas. The desire to break into the daily-deals market is understandable. Bia/Kelsey, a local-media adviser, said in March that the "deal-a-day" market saw U.S. revenue hit $873 million last year. It forecasts that the market will grow to over $1.2 billion this year and reach nearly $4 billion in 2015.To entice people to sign up for its service, AT&T is offering a $10 credit to put toward their first deal. The credit will be available to subscribers through May 22.Looking ahead, YP Deals will likely be rolled out in more markets. A company FAQ said that it's "dashing to deliver more deals to more cities."AT&T did not immediately respond to CNET's request for comment.

0 Vote(s)

Security firm AVG is doubling down on cloud storage. The company today announced LiveKive, a service that allows people to upload data to the cloud that can then be downloaded to other computers or Android- and iOS-based devices with the LiveKive mobile app. It works on both Windows andMac.AVG is currently offering two packages: a $49.99 per year option that gives customers 25GB of online storage and a $79.99 a year plan with unlimited data. In either case, people can upload files, folder, and multimedia content. The service also supports automatic syncing for those who don't want to manually choose what should and should not be saved in the cloud. At first glance, AVG's LiveKive closely resembles Dropbox and Box.net. Both of those services allow people to sync content with the cloud and share files on other products, including mobile devices.Dropbox offers 2GB of backup for free and charges $10 per month and $20 per month for 50GB and 100GB, respectively. Box.net offers up to 5GB of storage at no cost to its "personal" users, but charges $15 per user per month for 500GB of Web storage.

0 Vote(s)

Apple sold a record number of iPhones, more than 16 million between September and December 2010.(Credit:Apple)In a display of perfect timing, Apple blew past analyst expectations in reporting the best financial performance in its history today.Apple reported revenue of $26.74 billion and profits of $6 billion, or $6.43 per share. Revenue was up 71 percent from a year ago, and earnings were up 78 percent. Analysts were expecting revenue of $24.38 billion and earnings per share of $5.38.The company's gross margins dipped slightly to 38.5 percent compared with 40.9 percent a year ago, as Apple had forecast during the company's last earnings call. The report followed news yesterday that CEO Steve Jobs will be taking an indefinite leave of absence from the company to focus on his ongoing health problems. He retains CEO duties, while COO Tim Cook will handle the day-to-day operations of the company. Apple included a quote from Jobs in the press release accompanying the earnings report today. "We had a phenomenal holiday quarter with recordMac,iPhone, andiPad sales," Jobs said. "We are firing on all cylinders and we've got some exciting things in the pipeline for this year including iPhone 4 on Verizon which customers can't wait to get their hands on." Apple shares opened down more than $20 this morning in the aftermath of Monday's revelation that Jobs would be taking a medical leave of absence. They rebounded to close down $7.83 at $340.65, and Wall Street responded warmly to the blow-out earnings report, sending shares up almost 2 percent to $342.07 in after-hours trading.Apple said it sold 4.13 million Macs during the quarter, 23 percent more than the holiday quarter a year ago' 16.24 million iPhones, 86 percent better than a year ago' 19.45 million iPods during the quarter, down 7 percent from a year ago' and 7.33 million iPads.Apple continued to put away cash, adding $9.8 billion during the quarter, putting its bank account balance at more than $60 billion. Sales of the iPhone more than doubled from last year. CFO Peter Oppenheimer said on an earnings call with analysts that the company recorded $10.47 billion in revenue alone from the sale of iPhones and related accessories. In its first holiday quarter, Apple was able to increase its supply of iPads, which had been problematic for the company since its debut in stores in April. "We increased dramatically last quarter," Cook said. "That did get us into supply/demand balance and allowed us to expand to a total of 46 countires during the quarter and we're confident enough to add another 15 countries during January."Oppenheimer said the company made $4.61 billion in revenue alone from the sale of iPad and iPad accessories. Continuing close to where Jobs left off during the previous quarter's earnings call, Cook said he foresees little competition from Android tablets, especially the current crop that's shipping with versions of Android not optimized for tablets. In that case, "You wind up with a scaled-up smartphone, which is a bizarre product in our view. It's hard for me to understand if somebody does a side-by-side (comparison) with an iPad, I think an enormous percentage of people are going to select an iPad. Those are not tablets we have any concern on," he said.Cook is similarly unimpressed with the forthcoming Android 3.0 Honeycomb-based tablets announced earlier this month at CES."There's nothing shipping yet, so I don't know. Generally they lack performance specs, price, (shipping) timing. Today, they're vapor," said Cook. "We'll assess them as they come out. However, we're not sitting still. And we have a huge first mover advantage. We have an incredible user experience from iTunes to the App Store and enormous number of apps and a huge ecosystem, so we're very, very confident in entering in a fight with anyone." When asked about whether the iPad is cannibalizing Mac sales, Cook said he assumes it is somewhat. But he added that he's confident that the "halo effect" that brought new Mac users to Apple once the iPod went mainstream would be repeated with the iPad."If the iPad or tablets do cannibalize the PC market, keep in mind we have low share in the PC market. The other guys will lose a lot more (share), and we have a lot more to win because of that," he said. "Cannibalization is not something we're spending one minute on here." Apple's retail stores had their best quarter yet during the holiday shopping season, with revenue of $3.9 billion. Collectively, Apple Stores in China are the highest trafficked stores and have the highest average revenue of any of the company's retail outlets, according to Oppenheimer.Though not asked directly, Cook subtly tried to quell any unspoken concerns analysts had over a possible future of Apple without Jobs during the call. His message was essentially "business as usual.""We're very heavy with product pipeline. The team here has an unparalleled depth and breadth with talent and a culture of innovation that Steve has driven in the company," said Cook. "Excellence has become a habit. We feel very confident in the future of the company." Updatd at 3:08 p.m. PT with details from the earnings call.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Kodak)The Kodak PlayFull is pretty much a basic minicamcorder, albeit a tiny, attractive one. It captures full HD 1080p movies and 5-megapixel stills and is loaded with Kodak's share software for quickly editing videos and sharing on sites like Facebook and Twitter as well as international sites like Yandex and KAIXIN001. There is a Share button, too, for tagging your photos and videos to upload to those sites as soon as it's connected to a computer. The PlayFull also gets black and white, sepia, high saturation, and 70's film look capture effects' face tracking' electronic image stabilization' and on-camera editing. And despite its petite build, Kodak squeezed a flip-out USB connector in for that important direct connection to a computer. The PlayFull will be available in silver, blue-silver, purple-silver, and blue-black for $149.95 in spring 2011.Editors' take: With the PlayFull in the lineup, Kodak has a model for just about every type of minicamcorder user. Compared to its linemates, the PlaySport and PlayTouch, it is stripped down. It's not lacking in features for the price, though, and if the video is decent, which I expect it would be, this could be a nice option for those looking for more than what their smartphone offers in performance and battery life.

0 Vote(s)

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus, and he's equipped with the latest in satellite-based technology to get you your toys on time (and in one piece). So says the Federal Aviation Administration, which announced this week that its safety inspectors had certified St. Nick's sleigh, Santa One, for its annual chimney-chasing trek around the globe."Children around the world will get their gifts on time, regardless of the weather, thanks to NextGen," a new air traffic control technology, U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. "We're proud to say NextGen is bringing Santa Claus to town."FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt chimed in: "Santa's cockpit display will help improve his situational awareness by showing him and his reindeer flight crew their precise location in relation to other aircraft, bad weather, and terrain. NextGen will help make this an extra-safe Christmas Eve."The FAA is phasing out its antiquated radar-reliant air traffic control system and setting up NextGen, a system that relies on data from the global satellite network. As CNET's Michelle Meyers has reported, the FAA says ADS-B, the technology at the heart of the new system, will enable both pilots and controllers to see radarlike displays with highly accurate traffic data from satellites. The displays will update in real time and won't degrade with distance or terrain, according to the agency. And better access to weather services, terrain maps, and flight information services should mean pilots (not to mention jolly old souls) will be able to maintain safe distances from one another (or chimneys) with less assistance from air controllers. In June, Boeing won the contract from the FAA to create the NextGen system. The aviation giant will design NextGen to handle all varieties of traffic, including commercial, military, general aviation, unmanned aerial systems, and rotorcraft.A Nick&39's-eye view of Santa One&39's high-tech cockpit.(Credit:Santa Claus, for the FAA)This appears to be the first time a flying sleigh has been equipped, let alone one powered by eight or nine tiny reindeer and serviced by elves. The FAA said Rudolph's red nose has been outfitted with NextGen technology and will broadcast Santa One's position via satellites to air traffic controllers worldwide."Rudolph with your nose so wired, won't you guide us as desired" Santa asked the diminutive caribou."Ho, ho," Rudolph replied."Ho," added Santa.None of the other tiny, hoofed crew members was immediately available for comment: neither Dasher nor Dancer nor Prancer nor Vixen' Comet nor Cupid nor Donner nor Blitzen.Children and the young at heart can Eve's-drop on Santa's journey courtesy of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, at the "NORAD Tracks Santa" Web site: noradsanta.org.Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night.

0 Vote(s)

Ever been confused at a restaurant in a foreign country and wish you could just scan your menu with your iPhone and get an instant translation Well as of today you are one step closer thanks to Word Lens from QuestVisual. The iPhone app, which hit iTunes last night, a4sis the culmination of 2 1/2 years of work from founders Otavio Good and John DeWeese. The paid app, which currently offers onlya4sEnglish to Spanish and Spanish to English translation for $4.99, uses Optical Character Recognition technology to execute something which might as well be magic. This is what the future, literally, looks like.Founder Good explains the app&'s process simply, &''It tries to find out what the letters are and then looks in the dictionary. Then it draws the words back on the screen in translation.&'' Right now the app is mostly word for word translation, useful if you&'re looking to get the gist of something like a dish on a menu or what a road sign says.At the moment the only existing services even remotely like this are Pleco, a Chinese learning app and a feature on Google Goggles where you can snap a stillshot and send that in for translation. Word Lens is currently self-funded.Good says that the obvious steps for Word Lens&' future is to get more languages in. He&'s planning on incorporating major European languages and is also thinking about other potential uses including a reader for the blind, &''I wouldn&'t be surprised if we did French next, Italian and since my mom is Brazilian, Portuguese.&''Says Good, modestly, &''The translation isn&'t perfect, but it gets the point across.&'' You can try it out for yourself here.

0 Vote(s)
