Earlier this week, an Illinois man managed to leave his cell phone in his back pocket, a choice that ended up, thanks to his rolling bottom, with his wife calling the police, who sent a SWAT team to the man's place of work.John Garber, a valet from an Atlanta nightclub might now be dead if he'd kept his cell phone in the same place.According to the Associated Press, Garber was working at Club Halo when two men were thrown out of the club. Police say that the men allegedly ventured over to acar, grabbed some weapons and began to shoot indiscriminately in the direction of the club. One of the bullets went through Garber's coat and was about to do him severe damage. Suddenly, it was intercepted by his HTC phone, which he had put into the chest pocket of his jacket. Garber's coat is now adorned with a bullet hole. The top left corner of his red cell phone battery now enjoys a dent that signifies it wouldn't let the bullet through. No one was injured in this shooting and police happened to be near the club and managed to chase down the alleged shooters, from whose car they reportedly recovered two handguns.Garber told the AP: "It's just one of those crazy things in life."And did he reportedly make one of those post-traumatic statements about never buying another brand of phone againWhy, yes. Strange that you should ask, he reportedly did.I wonder whether the Illinois man who caused the butt-dial now keeps his cell phone permanently on guard over his chest every night before going home.

0 Vote(s)

The last full lunar eclipse happened in February 2008.(Credit:NASA TV)If you're like me, you tend to forget to look at the sky when interesting things are happening. Tonight there will be a total lunar eclipse that will make the moon look red for 72 minutes, and I am hoping to catch it. To help people see the show and learn about the event, Southern Stars is releasing the latest version of its SkySafari Lite iPhone app for free through December 21. The app correctly predicts when the eclipse will happen and displays it, along with additional information. SkySafari Lite runs on theiPhone,iPod Touch, andiPad and includes astronomy maps of the heavens and planets, using the internal compass of your device so you can point it up to the sky and it will tell you exactly what planets and constellations you are viewing. This lunar eclipse is particularly interesting because it comes on the Winter Solstice. The last time that happened was 1638, and it won't happen again until 2094.

0 Vote(s)

So maybe you can't actually buy the pint-sized Volkswagen Gol concept featured last week (and with a top speed of 17 mph, who'd want to) but what would you say to a half-scale Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, Porsche Speedster, or Jaguar E-TypePocket Classics&39' half-scale Mercedes-Benz 300 SL would look great parked under my Christmas tree.(Credit:Pocket Classics)These tiny Pocket Classics roadsters feature working lights, turn signals, horn, and, most importantly, a 110cc gasoline engine with a three-speed automatic transmission. On models that don't come with the optional speed limiter, top speed is 46 mph. Of course, there's no word on how long it would take to reach that speed or how quickly the rear disc brakes--there are no front brakes--can haul the vehicle to a stop. Additionally, handling couldn't be too impressive with no moving suspension components.Pocket Classics also offers electric versions of most of its vehicles, swapping out the 0.1-liter gasoline engine for an electric motor. The changes don't stop there. Disc brakes are swapped for drums, top speed drops to 14 mph, forward gears are reduced to one, and the maximum drive time is reduced to about an hour and 45 minutes.Available models include the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, Porsche Speedster, and Jaguar E-Type mentioned earlier, with gasoline- and electric-powered variants of each. Additionally, there are tiny Willys Jeeps (gasoline only) and Bugatti Type 35s (electric only). Examples are built to order by the United Kingdom-based manufacturer. We're sure that anyone willing to pay the average price of about &163'9,995 (or $15,593 at current exchange rates, about what you'd pay for a loaded 2011 Mazda Mazda2) can find some way to get one of these across the pond.Source: Pocket Classics via Auto Motto

0 Vote(s)

Looking to get your hands on the best-looking Android tablet from CES You wona4a4t have to wait much longer.Motorolaa4a4s Xoom tablet will be available at Best Buy stores on February 17 for $699.99, according to internal documents sent to Engadget. While the Xooma4a4s price may seem high compared to the iPad, which starts at $499 for the 16GB WiFi-only version, ita4a4s actually competitive given what the tablet has to offer. It will come with 32 GB of storage and, as wea4a4ve previously reported, will support Verizona4a4s 3G network (and will be upgradeable to its LTE 4G network eventually). Applea4a4s 32GB iPad with 3G retails for $729, so the Xoom is actually cheaper in comparison. And of course, the 10.1-inch Xoom also features front and rear facing cameras, as well as a higher resolution screen than the iPad.A previous pricing leak hinted that the Xoom would retail for $800 at a minimum, which would have made the tablet disastrously uncompetitive against the iPad and Samsunga4a4s Galaxy Tab.Therea4a4s still a chance that the Xoom could be offered for less than $700 if purchased together with a Verizon mobile data contract. But with Verizon-compatible iPads on the horizon, ita4a4s unlikely that the carrier would want to invest much in making a competing Android tablet cheaper.Next Story: Sean Parker says he enjoyed Social Network film, but &''it&'s complete fiction&'' Previous Story: NY Times will build its digital empire on (metered) quality journalismPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, Galaxy Tab, iPad, tablets, XoomCompanies: Apple, motorola, Samsung Tags: Android, Galaxy Tab, iPad, tablets, XoomCompanies: Apple, motorola, SamsungDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Want an iPad for $100 less then you could get it yesterday Following the announcement of the iPad 2 today, which will be available starting at $499, Apple has reduced the starting price of the original iPad to $399.That will score you the WiFi-only iPad with 16 gigabytes of memory. Other models of the original iPad have also been marked down by $100. The highest-end 32GB 3G iPad is now a mere $729.The news is a sign that the original iPad is not long for this Earth. Apple likely wants to sell out of its iPad stock as quickly as possible so that consumers will only have the iPad 2 to choose from.At $399, the original iPad is a good deal if you dona4a4t care about the iPad 2a4a4s new features, like its dual cameras, dual-core processor, and impossibly thin design. If youa4a4d rather wait for the new model, Apple says it will be available on March 11. Ita4a4s unclear when (or if) Apple will make the iPad 2 available for pre-order, but wea4a4ll let you know if that happens.Next Story: Can Daimler partnership give China&'s electric car startup BYD a lift Previous Story: On the GreenBeat: Coda wants to sell 50,000 electric cars by 2015, Powerit raises $5MPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iOS, iPad, iPad 2, tabletsCompanies: Apple Tags: iOS, iPad, iPad 2, tabletsCompanies: AppleDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
