Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said yesterday that Windows 8 will debut in 2012, although the company later called his comments a "misstatement."Speaking at a developers conference in Japan yesterday, Ballmer touched upon a variety of topics from Windows Phone to search engines to cloud computing. But the CEO emphasized that Microsoft is working on the next version of Windows and spilled a few details about Windows 8 as the company prepares to make the transition fromWindows 7."We're obviously hard at work on the next version of Windows," Ballmer said, according to a transcript posted on Microsoft's own press site. "Windows 7 PCs will sell over 350 million units this year. We've done a lot in Windows 7 to improve customer satisfaction. We have a brand new user interface. We've added touch, and ink, and speech. And yet, as we look forward to the next generation of Windows systems, which will come out next year, there's a whole lot more coming. As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8. Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors."Though Microsoft hasn't quite kept it a secret that it's working on the next version of Windows, the company has yet to officially spill the beans on the exact name and launch date. So this marked the first confirmation at the highest ranks. Ballmer also noted Microsoft's efforts to launch Windows 8 across a variety of platforms from PCs to mobile devices. However, it seems Ballmer may jumped the gun by publicly uttering the name and ship year for Windows 8. Following his comments, Microsoft released an official statement saying that its CEO apparently misspoke."It appears there was a misstatement," Microsoft said in a statement released to CNET. "We are eagerly awaiting the next generation of Windows 7 hardware that will be available in the coming fiscal year. To date, we have yet to formally announce any timing or naming for the next version of Windows."This isn't the first time Microsoft's feathers have been ruffled over comments specific to the next version of Windows. Intel VP Renee James managed to upset the company last week when she said that Microsoft would release multiple versions of Windows 8 designed for Intel-based PCs as well as ARM-based mobile devices.Though it may not debut until next year, Windows 8 could actually make its first stage appearance at next week's All Things Digital D9 conference in California. AllThingsD's Kara Swisher has confirmed that the president of Microsoft's Windows division, Steven Sinofsky, will be one of the speakers.Citing a source familiar with Microsoft's plans, tech site WinRumors says Microsoft plans to demo its Windows 8 tablet interface at D9, considered especially likely since the folks in Redmond traditionally tend to unveil new technologies at the annual All Things Digital conference.

0 Vote(s)

Three tech icons announced this week major leadership changes that took Silicon Valley by surprise.Apple CEO Steve Jobs got the ball rolling by announcing he is taking another medical leave from the company he co-founded more than 30 years ago, leaving many to wonder who might be in line to be his successor.Apple COO Tim Cook(Credit:Sarah Tew/CNET)Jobs, a pancreatic cancer survivor, announced in an e-mail to employees that he would be stepping away indefinitely from his day-to-day duties at Apple but would retain the title of chief executive.
HP&39's newly updated Pavilion Slimline s5700.(Credit:HP)In keeping with its tradition of regular quarterly updates, HP brings word that its Pavilion Slimline desktops have been brought up to the s5700 series. We reviewed a higher-end s5600 Slimline a few months ago and found it one of the better slim towers we'd reviewed recently. The new s5710f and s5730f appear to be more modest configurations, aimed at budget-oriented retail shoppers. Each of the new systems features a dual-core AMD CPU' a 3.4GHz Phenom II 510 in the s5730f, and a 3.2GHz Athlon II 260 in the s5710f. Both also feature DVD burner drives, and integrated AMD Radeon 3000 graphics chips. The s5730f comes with 802.11n wireless networking and a 750GB hard drive, the s57310f features only traditional wired networking and a 640GB hard drive.Neither is exactly on the cutting edge of living room systems, but each could conceivably make a respectable budget workhorse, especially with a reasonable price. The Pavilion Slimline s6700 series starts at $299.99 and hits retail on January 9th. We expect to find configurable models online as well.

0 Vote(s)

An analyst at Goldman Sachs, the investment bank, said in a report that Microsoft would see slowed revenue growth next year as long as it &''maintains the status quo&'' with its current attitude toward tablet computers.Microsoft faces a growing threat from tablet computers a4" smaller touchscreen devices that run stripped-down operating systems and are more geared toward content consumption than creation. Tablets are beginning to take the place of notebook computers thanks to a generation interested only in accessing the Internet.Microsoft will probably only see 7 percent revenue growth a4" compared to early estimates of 12 percent a4" thanks to its current attitude toward tablet computers, according to Goldman Sachs. Microsoft hasn&'t developed a presence in the tablet computing space, despite making several attempts to break into it.Microsoft&'s strategy to date has centered onwhat it bills as a stylus-using &''slate&'' computer that runs on Windows 7, rather than a true tablet with a lightweight operating system like Apple&'s iPad or Samsung&'s Galaxy Tab, which runs Google&'s Android operating system. The initial attempts were a bit disappointing. But there may be room for a stylus tablet in the academic and enterprise spaces. The Kno, another slate computer, is specifically geared toward students and the company designing ithas already raised a sizable $55 million in funding.Microsoft is essentially still trying to re-establish itself as a provider of software for the typical consumer. The software giant has revamped its PC operating system, Windows 7, and released a more user-friendly mobile operating system to keep the typical consumer&'s attention. It launched a new version of its Web browser, Internet Explorer 9. It&'s also offering several Web-based applications for Windows Live users, and continues to hold a strong position in the video game market with the Xbox 360.Parts of that strategy show evidence of success. The Windows Phone 7 development community has grown to 15,000 developers in a short period of time, and Internet Explorer 9 was downloaded 6 million times in its first month of release. But for the most part, Microsoft is late to the game a4" the iPhone and devices running on Google&'s Android operating system, as well as browsers better than Microsoft&'s older Internet Explorer browsers, have been around for some time now.One of its largest revenue sources continues to be Microsoft Office and its other enterprise options. Goldman Sachs said it expects Microsoft&'s cloud computing product, Azure, should continue to grow. But the company cannot shift its focus away from the consumer that it has traditionally had some trouble appeasing, and the flavor of the month for the consumer is tablet computers.Next Story: Yahoo may ax 650 jobs tomorrow (report) Previous Story: Blackstone backs Rive&'s $25 million round to green oil refining &8212' an example of cleantech compromisePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: cloud computing, enterprise, tablet computersCompanies: Apple, Google, Microsoft Tags: cloud computing, enterprise, tablet computersCompanies: Apple, Google, MicrosoftMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Apple is preparing to remove the &''home&'' button from the upcoming iPad and iPhone models, according to BGR. The move means that Apple has evidently added new multitouch gestures in the latest version of its iOS operating system.Apple is rumored to be launching an iPad 2 in February and an iPhone 5 later this year. Instead of pressing the button to return the device&'s screen to its main page, users will now use multitouch gestures to do that. On top of that, BGR reported that Photo Booth, an Apple app for taking photos and videos, will make an appearance on the next iPad. That makes sense since the iPad 2 is expected to have both front and rear-facing cameras.Meanwhile, MacRumors said that the iOS 4.3 developer version of the new operating system has a new feature called &''Find My Friends.&'' The new setting is related to MobileMe, suggesting that Apple may have its own location-based friend-finding service like Loopt and Google Latitude. Those services help you find nearby friends at any moment by tracking them via a phone&'s mobile signal or its position relative to cell phone towers.Next Story: How to maximize the value of your organizationa4a4s IP investment Previous Story: RockYou buys UK game developer PlaydemicPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iOS, iPad, iPad 2, iPhoneCompanies: Apple, BGR, MacRumors Tags: iOS, iPad, iPad 2, iPhoneCompanies: Apple, BGR, MacRumorsDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
The second wave of e-commerce is coming, buoyed by a flood of fresh cash. European flash-sales site operator Privalia, which offers short-term, steeply discounted fashion deals in Spain, Italy, Brazil, and Mexico, is expanding to Germany with a $280 million acquisition of rival Dress-For-Less.The deal is funded in part by $123 million in fresh cash from General Atlantic, Highland Capital Partners, Index Ventures, and Insight Venture Partners, as well as debt and newly issued shares. Those are big numbers, and they come on top of a $95 million round just last October from General Atlantic and Index.Privalia is a private-sales site that offers members deep discounts on apparel and other items for a short period of time. Others in the flash-sales category include Rue La La, now owned by GSI Commerce' Gilt Groupe, which offers deals in apparel and travel' and One Kings Lane, a home-dcor site. The limited time horizon for offers, combined with a curated array of merchandise and new social tools, serves to drive demand from consumers looking to buy something new. That customer base &8212' those who view shopping as entertainment and largely made up of women &8212' is potentially much larger than the hardcore online shoppers who became loyal online shoppers a decade ago.The first wave of e-commerce, transactional and efficient, did catalogs one better by offering a nearly limitless array of merchandise and selling it cheaply and quickly. It satisfied demand, rather than creating it.Private-sales sites, daily deals purveyors like Groupon, and other new forms of e-commerce promise to do something much bigger and more difficult: create demand. Successful traditional retailers excel at this, turning their stores into showcases of consumer delight and convincing people to reach for their pocketbooks for something they had no intention of buying when they walked into the store.Privalia seems to have an edge in fast-growing overseas markets. Gilt currently operates in the U.S. and Japan. GSI, which is publicly traded, spent $350 million acquiring Rue La La and could expand quickly. A lot of capital is flowing into the sector. But unlike earlier waves of e-commerce, which required building and stocking warehouses to guarantee the availability of those vast virtual shelves of merchandise, the new e-commerce tends to move products quickly, making it an appealing investment to venture capitalists who might shy away from plowing their capital into inventory.Instead, the money in this second wave of e-commerce is going into customer acquisition, technology, and some financial maneuvers &8212' like Privalia&'s rollup of Dress-for-Less.Next Story: On the GreenBeat: PlugShare app finds car chargers, Suntech beats First Solar in panel production Previous Story: Global LED market surges, doubling last yearPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: e commerce, e-commerce 2.0, flash sales, private sales, social shoppingCompanies: Dress-for-Less, General Atlantic Partners, Index Ventures, Insight Venture Partners, Privalia Tags: e commerce, e-commerce 2.0, flash sales, private sales, social shoppingCompanies: Dress-for-Less, General Atlantic Partners, Index Ventures, Insight Venture Partners, PrivaliaOwen Thomas is the executive editor of VentureBeat.
