(Credit:Wayne Cunningham/CNET)The newest hybrid from Lexus comes in the form of a low-down hatchback with futuristic side styling, an aggressive front end, and a dark sunglasses-looking rear window. It seems like a perfect fit for the class of hot hatchbacks that includes the Civic Si, VW GTI, and Mazdaspeed3. And a sporty hybrid Sign us up.But hitting the gas produces the same sort of half-hearted push that you get from a Toyota Prius, no surprise as it has the same power-train specs. Sure, it shows nice composure when manhandled through a corner, but you won't exactly be powering out the other side. No, Lexus opted for fuel economy over push with the CT 200h. You will have to be satisfied with slow cruising with stylish looks and practical hatchback space.Cabin tech isn't exactly cutting-edge in the CT 200h, either. Although it's a completely new model, Lexus fitted it with electronics that were current in 2008. That means a solid set of features, such as navigation with traffic and a quality audio system, but Lexus missed an opportunity here to push out tech that might compete with the likes of Audi or BMW.Read our review of the 2011 Lexus CT 200h.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft is putting the finishing touches on a deal to buy Internet phone company Skype for between $7 billion and $8 billion, and a deal could be announced as early as tomorrow, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The report cited people familiar with the matter who said negotiations were ongoing and could still fall apart. Microsoft representatives did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The Luxembourg-based company provides a software-based communications service that allows people to make free voice and video calls over the Internet to other Skype users using almost any Internet-connected device. The voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP service also allows people to make and receive calls from regular telephone numbers using a paid service.Interest in the Internet telephony giant has been high since online auction giant eBay, which had acquired Skype in 2006, sold off its controlling interest in Skype. Facebook and Google had previously been mentioned as possible suitors for the company, which has been around since 2003 and averages 124 million connected users per month.Skype filed plans in August 2010 for an initial public offering that was widely expected to raise about $1 billion. However, those plans were delayed after Skype appointed former Cisco Systems executive Tony Bates as its new chief executive in October 2010. The $7 billion valuation would place the deal among Microsoft's largest acquisitions. In 2007, the software maker completed its $6 billion takeover of Internet advertising firm Aquantive.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft&39's first app to hit the Mac App Store(Credit:CNET)Microsoft has brought its first piece of software to Apple'sMac App Store. The digital software storefront, which launched just last month, is now home to Microsoft'sWindows Phone 7 Connector software. This is the application that lets Mac users sync up their iTunes and iPhoto libraries with Windows Phone 7 devices. It's also the way Mac users will be able to update the system software on their phones when Microsoft pushes out its first big update next month. Microsoft first offered up the software in beta in October, and continues to offer it up as a standalone download on its own site. This is Microsoft's first piece of software on the Mac App Store, and is unlikely to be the last. Microsoft currently sells digital copies of Office for Mac through direct download, but does it through its own storefront. Thus far, the company has kept mum about plans to bring Office to the new platform, short of saying the idea had been under consideration.(via Cult of Mac)

0 Vote(s)

Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo(Credit:Sony Ericsson)BARCELONA, Spain--Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play wasn't the only new cell phone that the company released at Mobile World Congress. The slim and media-centric Xperia Neo and Xperia Pro also had their official coming out party in Spain. The candy bar smartphones look very much like the handset that we caught a glimpse of last week. The only physical difference between the Neo and the Pro is that the former has a virtual keyboard while the latter adds a physical keyboard. On both handsets, the 3.7-inch touch screen supports 16.7 million colors and a 854x480-pixel resolution. Three physical controls (Home, Back and Menu) sit below the display, and a volume rocker, power control, 3.5mm headset jack, a MicroSD card slot, and Micro-USB ports line the sides. The Xperia Pro's keyboard is spacious and comfortable. The keys are slightly raised and the large space bar is located conveniently in the center of the bottom row.
