Adobe&39's CSS Regions and CSS Exclusions technology lets text flow within defined regions or around defined regions.(Credit:Adobe Systems)Adobe has begun putting its money where its mouth is when it comes to improving Web page design.Today, the first bit of Adobe-written code landed in the WebKit browser engine project, an early step to try to bring magazine-style layouts to Web pages using an extension to today's CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) technology. Adobe calls the technology CSS Regions. The move begins fulfilling a plan Adobe announced in May to build the technology into WebKit and--if the company can persuade others to embrace it--furthers Adobe's ambition to standardize the advanced CSS layout mechanism.WebKit is the browser engine within Apple'sSafari and Google's Chrome, among others, but inclusion in the software doesn't guarantee those browsers will adopt it. Google, however, is helping shepherd the technology, so it seems likely at least Chrome will get it, and inclusion in the main WebKit code base makes it easy for others to do so.CSS--in particular the present CSS3 version under development--is a major frontier for more sophisticated Web pages. Recent CSS advances include downloadable fonts and animations that can move elements around a Web page, and hardware acceleration arriving in browsers is making its use faster and less battery-taxing.Adobe's move is notable given how important a competing technology, its own Flash Player, is to the company. Adobe argues it's a toolmaker that offers multiple tools, but the WebKit work signifies a more active role in Web technology. The WebKit contribution shows it's putting a priority on improving Web publishing's foundations.Mihnea Ovidenie, part of Adobe's Romania-based WebKit team, contributed the CSS patch, and Google Chrome programmer Kent Tamura approved it. The patch itself is very basic--just a WebKit build system update to let people enable or disable the CSS feature. For those who don't want to wait for all the patches to be approved in WebKit, Adobe makes a custom version of WebKit available on Adobe Labs for those who want to try CSS Regions and its close cousin, CSS Exclusions.Web standards are developed through a push-me-pull-you method with browser makers introducing new technology at the same time standards groups try to settle it down. That can produce some chaos, but it also ensures Web developers have had a chance to test the ideas in the real world before they get baked into a standard.Adobe&39's proposed CSS extensions would, among other things, let Web developers confine text to a specific shape.(Credit:Adobe Systems)Text can reflow automatically across multicolumn layouts, adjusting as the window size changes.(Credit:Adobe Systems)

0 Vote(s)

The controls for some of the 2012 Infinit M Hybrid ADAS.(Credit:CBS Interactive)As Advanced Driver Assistance Systems become more prevalent in the vehicle industry, their market value will grow at an exponential rate, a new study from ABI Research has found. This year alone, the market value of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which are built by vendors, is expected to hit $10 billion, the research firm reported today. ABI Research forecasts the ADAS market to reach a value of $130 billion in 2016.Advanced Driver Assistance Systems offer several important functions for drivers, including adaptive cruise control that speeds up or slows down thecar based on road conditions' warnings when the vehicle starts to drift into another lane' and low-speed collision mitigation. ADAS has been available in some luxury vehicles for well over a decade. However, this year, ADAS will start making its way to "higher-volume" cars, ABI Research says, including the Ford Focus and Mercedes Benz C-Class.The shift to more popular cars is the result of the improvement ADAS has undergone over the years. Aside from delivering better functionality, the systems are becoming easier to produce. That combination of better performance and lower production cost is helping to bring more car makers into the ADAS game.New features in ADAS systems are also helping to attract new-car buyers. As ABI Research pointed out, simple warnings when a car drifts into another lane are no longer the norm for ADAS. Now, automakers are installing systems that can turn the car back into the lane. The systems are also capable of maintaining speed limit information to keep drivers informed."Blind spot detection is another option that now offers additional functionality on many vehicles," ABI Research research director Larry Fisher said in a statement. "On some radar-based BSD systems this feature can use its sensors to determine when vehicles are approaching from the side when reversing out of a parking space. Other BSD systems are able to look further rearward to check for overtaking vehicles about to enter the blind spot."Luckily for those who want the latest tech in their cars, there are quite a few options that offer some of the latest and greatest ADAS available. For example, the CNET Reviews team recently took the 2012 Infinti M Hybrid for a spin. Aside from the typical adaptive cruise control and blind-spot detection, the car also included a brake-assist system that automatically brakes the vehicle a car length behind another car. According to CNET's Wayne Cunningham, the system can used "to do your braking for you."Not bad.Further reading:CNET's 2012 Infiniti M Hybrid Review

0 Vote(s)

Anonymous says its next target is Iran. The hacker group Anonymous has its next denial-of-service (DoS) target in sight: Iran, CNET has learned. Members of the loosely organized group are planning "Operation Iran," an attack designed to shut down Iranian Web sites beginning Sunday, according to their latest online proclamation. May 1 is International Worker's Day. "The people of Iran have the admiration of Anonymous, and the entire world," the statement says. "We can see that Iran still suffers at the hands of those in power. Your former government has seized control, and tries to silence you. People of Iran--your rights belong to you." The operation seemed to already have begun late today with Web page defacements ostensibly targeted at Iranian hackers. Anonymous left messages on several Web sites that had allegedly been previously attacked by the Iranian Cyber Army, including the site of a Canadian information systems firm and the site of a Ukrainian dancing group, according to an observer on an Anonymous Internet Relay Chat channel that members use to coordinate their operations. Anonymous is known for its renegade cyberattacks in defense of perceived underdogs or to support freedom of expression or other anti-establishment causes. In defense of whistle-blowing site WikiLeaks, the group targeted PayPal, Visa, MasterCard, and other companies late last year that had stopped enabling WikiLeaks to receive contributions. Earlier this month, Anonymous targeted Sony in protest of the company's treatment ofSony PlayStation hacker George Hotz. Hotz and Sony have since settled the lawsuit Sony filed, and Anonymous has denied any involvement in a recent serious breach that exposed information of millions of Sony PlayStation Network customers. Other Anonymous targets have been: Broadcast Music Inc., the Church of Scientology' the governments of Egypt, Iran, and Sweden' the Westboro Baptist Church' conservative activist billionaires Charles and David Koch and their companies' as well as security firm HBGary Federal, which had reportedly been working with the FBI to identify the leaders of Anonymous.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:CVRH Enterprises)Thanks to apps like Epicurious, How to Cook Everything, and Martha's Everyday Food, iPads make excellent kitchen companions.Just one problem: how do you protect your priceyiPad from the perils of the kitchen I'm talking messy ingredients, hot stoves, sticky-fingered kids, and the like.Simple: mount it underneath a cabinet. That not only gets it up off the counter (and out of harm's way), but also puts it closer to eye level so you're not constantly bending down to check your recipe. One of the easiest and most affordable options I've found is the Original Kitchen iPad Rack, a heavy-duty acrylic tray for under-cabinet iPad mounting. The price is $29.95, plus $7.95 for shipping. To use the rack, you need only install three white brackets--a job that takes 5 minutes at most. An included paper template makes it easy to mark where you'll drill your pilot holes for the screws. (The instructions don't mention drilling, but they should.) Once the brackets are installed, you simply hook the rack into them, then place your iPad on the rack. What's cool is that you can just as easily remove the rack when you don't need it, tossing it in a drawer or cupboard until next time. Another design amenity: the rack's lower lip is deep enough to accommodate your iPad even if it's in a thick case, and the whole thing is just long enough to hold your iPad in portrait orientation if you prefer. The product works really well, though I do have a couple gripes. First, the rack itself may be removable, but the brackets aren't--so you'll probably see them poking down from beneath your cabinets. They're a bit of an eyesore. If you can live with that, you may decide you want to use the rack in a second or even third location. CVRH Enterprises charges $8 for an extra set of brackets or $15 for two extra sets. Come on, guys. ReallyFinally, and this is another bracket-related complaint, the rack can't rotate. Why not switch to a wider, single bracket that can turn, say, 45 degrees in each direction That would make the rack a lot more versatile.Of course, it's pretty versatile already. Though it may not be perfect, at least by my definition, the Original Kitchen iPad Rack is a fine solution for people who are looking to keep their iPads safe and accessible in the kitchen.

0 Vote(s)

Doodle Jump, an enormously popular game on the iPhone built by two brothers in New York, has been downloaded more than 10 million times across the iPhone, iPad, and Android mobile devices. That&'s quite an achievement, but one that is becoming more and more common in the age of mobile apps. Indie developers who were virtually unknown are now becoming famous and fabulously wealthy because they created a game that resonated with millions of mobile users. The company isn&'t sitting still. In January, it announced a marketing deal with Universal Pictures, which plans to cross-promote the app in promotions for its upcoming live action and computer-animated comedy, Hop.Doodle Jump comes from humble indie roots. Croatian immigrants Igor Pusenjak and his brother Marko (their company is called Lima Sky) created the app two years ago, and it has become a sensation, particularly in my household. Igor got the idea for it and sketched the game on a pad in his living room. Marko did the programming.Lima Sky says it will soon launch multiplayer gaming for iOS (Apple iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad and iPad 2 devices), Doodle Jump on the iPad, a Doodle Jump line of toys, a Doodle Jump comic book, and a Doodle Jump game for the Kinect motion-gaming system on the Xbox 360 video game console. In all of these extensions of the Doodle Jump brand, Lima Sky is pursuing the same kind of strategy as Rovio, which has had 100 million downloads of its Angry Birds mobile game.In the movie deal, Lima Sky let its Doodle Jump users unlock a secret Easter level within the game and play as the filma4a4s leading character. Hop is the second film from Universal Pictures and filmmaker Chris Meledandri, producer of Despicable Me, at Illumination Entertainment. The film, which features Russell Brand as the Easter Bunny, will be released on April 1.In Doodle Jump, players guide Doodle the Doodler on a journey up a sheet of graph paper, using the tilt controls of the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Since its release, the game has risen into the cultural stratosphere, getting plenty of play and mentions from the likes of Jimmy Fallon, The Big Bang Theory, Rainn Wilson, the Jonas Brothers and others. Lima Sky was founded in July 2008.In my panel at the recent Digital Life Design conference in Munich, Igor Pusenjak said the game has stayed popular thanks to frequent content updates. The company has also licensed the game to GameHouse, which has published it on Android phones.Next Story: T-Mobilea4a4s Sidekick 4G by Samsung coming this spring Previous Story: iPad 2 shortages lead to 4-5 week online order delaysPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Doodle Jump, mobile gamesCompanies: Doodle Jump, Lima Sky, Universal PicturesPeople: Igor Pusenjak, Marko Pusenjak Tags: Doodle Jump, mobile gamesCompanies: Doodle Jump, Lima Sky, Universal PicturesPeople: Igor Pusenjak, Marko PusenjakDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
