The top U.S. Web properties, according to ComScore.(Credit:ComScore Media Metrix)It was business as usual on the Web in March, ComScore found in its latest Media Metrix survey.According to the research firm, more than 212 million Americans surfed the Web last month, and once again, Yahoo was their top destination, scoring nearly 180 million unique visitors. Google trailed Yahoo with more than 176.8 million unique visitors. Microsoft, Facebook, and AOL followed the search giant with 176.4 million, 153 million, and 118 million unique visitors, respectively.Perhaps the biggest surprise of the month was the growth of Zynga.com. According to ComScore, the FarmVille creator's site saw traffic rise 164 percent from over 2.7 million unique visitors in February to 7.3 million visitors in March. ComScore didn't say why Zynga's traffic rose so sharply.Neither the research firm nor Zynga immediately responded to request for comment.Aside from Web traffic, ComScore also examined the state of advertising in March. Once again, Google's Ad network reigned supreme, with its ads reaching 91.7 percent of the entire U.S. Web audience. Yahoo Sites had 84.4 percent reach. One other interesting tidbit: Americans were thinking seriously about repairing their homes in March. According to ComScore, home improvement sites saw traffic rise by 10 percent compared to February.

0 Vote(s)

eBaya4a4s chief executive John Donahoe has a plan to turn his company around a4" and it looks like ita4a4s working.eBaya4a4s revenue rose 5 percent year over year in the fourth quarter, bolstered by increased holiday sales and strong growth in its transaction service PayPal.The company raked in $2.5 billion in the fourth quarter last year, up from $2.4 billion in 2009. At the same time, eBay dramatically slashed its administrative costs by about 55 percent to $278 million. The companya4a4s total operating expenses were down 21 percent while its marketing and development spending was still up a4" meaning the company just became more efficient compared to last year. The companya4a4s PayPal operations have continued very healthy growth, with revenue from PayPal jumping 22 percent to $971 million during the holiday season compared to $796 million during the fourth quarter last year. Transaction activity was up 26 percent to around $27 billion during the holiday season last year compared to the same quarter a year earlier. There were 94.4 million registered PayPal users at the end of the fourth quarter last year.eBay began focusing on PayPal as its primary tool after Donahoe took the reigns in 2008. The company decided to copy Amazona4a4s online marketplace model with eBaya4a4s a4Abuy it nowa4 option for most of its auctions in a move to stray a little further from its typical reliance on auctions activity. As a result, its online auctions activity has stalled to an almost complete halt, growing only 3 percent in the fourth quarter this year compared to the same quarter a year earlier. Auctions activity still brought in a majority of eBaya4a4s revenue, netting the company $1.5 billion.eBay sold off its voice-over-Internet service Skype last year during the fourth quarter, leading to a write-down of around $1.8 billion. eBay still holds a 30 percent ownership of the voice service. Skype filed for an IPO in August this year. Excluding that write-down, eBaya4a4s profit was up around 24 percent a4" although it seems like that was largely from Donahoea4a4s efforts to bring down costs rather than a dramatic increase in revenue.[Photo: fsse8info]Next Story: Gevo slashes biofuels IPO goal to $100 million, potential boost from Total, United Airlines Previous Story: Does Google get games Kongregate mobile arcade banned from Android MarketplacePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: auctions, mobile payments, paypalCompanies: eBay, SkypePeople: John Donahoe Tags: auctions, mobile payments, paypalCompanies: eBay, SkypePeople: John DonahoeMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Home energy systems maker Control4 announced an agreement with Cisco today to develop home energy and smart community projects worldwide. The partnership is part of realizing Cisco&'s vision for smart and connected communities, in which homes around the world have the technological abilities to do anything from give their kids remote schooling from the living room to getting a teleconference visit with a doctor who can measure your blood pressure remotely. That vision also includes smart grid and energy efficiency potential and requires one operating system from which all the potential services can operate. That&'s a benefit of Control4&'s system and one reasonsCisco opted to partner with the company, said Paul Fulton, a Cisco executive. It&'s a powerful partnership and validation for Control4, which will get access to the projects and relationships with utilities Cisco has around the globe. The agreement also entails Control4 technology being tied into Cisco&'s service delivery platform and the introduction of Cisco-branded Control4 products.&''The platfrom for the digital home is really going to expand and accelerate in pace thanks to the partnership,&'' said Will West, Control4 CEO.It&'s been a busy start of the new year for Control4. Just last month it announced a strategic reseller agreement with smart grid company Silver Spring Networks, which paired a demand response offering with Control4&'s in-home display and operating system. The combined offerings was selected for deployment by AEP in Northeast Ohio.Cisco led a recent investment round for Control4, which has reportedly raised $93 million so far. According to an SEC filing, the most recent round Control4 raised totaled $15 million out of a planned $25 million.Control4 has made a name for itself by having sleek, well-designed energy management displays that can also provide automation of your TV, lights, drapes, etc. Its utility customers include NV Energy and OG&amp'E, and the company has also done installations for the Mandarin Oriental hotel and Aria Resort &amp' Casino in Las Vegas. Automation and home energy management is an areagetting hot this year, with players like Schneider Electric, Vivent, Intel, Tendril and LG jumping into the game.Cisco sees connected communities as a huge opportunity. As cities grow, the company believes, governments and municipalities will opt to build smart and more connected communities when developing new homes.Cisco&'s so-called &''Smart + Connected Communities&'' projects will use a combination of its smart grid communications infrastructure and home energy management with a Control4 hardware and software bundle, which includes a thermostat and in-home display. The offerings would provide residents perks like the ability toautomate and control lighting, temperature, entertainment, communication, security andenergy use.Next Story: How to launch at SXSW on a shoestring budget Previous Story: RadiumOne: Get ready to &''like&'' adsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: automation, home energy management, Smart GridCompanies: Cisco, Control4People: Paul Fulton Tags: automation, home energy management, Smart GridCompanies: Cisco, Control4People: Paul FultonIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
