If you know what this is and where it is located, you could be eligible to win a prize in the CNET Road Trip Picture of the Day contest.(Credit:Daniel Terdiman/CNET)Update (Thursday, 11:08 p.m. PDT): The answer to Thursday's challenge--which 174 people got--is the BMW Headquarters and Museum, in Munich, Germany. Thanks to all who played, and to everyone, please come back tomorrow for Friday's challenge.Welcome to the Road Trip Picture of the Day contest. This is your chance to win some cool prizes as you test your skills at recognizing pictures. Each day, I'll be posting a new photograph from my various travels, and your job is to try to correctly identify it using any means at your disposal. Throughout Road Trip 2011, which will take me to a number of countries in Western Europe, there will be a new challenge each and every day, and the opportunity to win some great prizes. And now on to today's challenge. If you know what this is and where it's located, please send me an e-mail with both pieces of information (to daniel*dot*terdiman--at--cbs*dot*com) by 6 p.m. Pacific time today. Please note: in order to be considered, you must include the phrase "Picture of the Day challenge" in the subject line of your e-mail. No other methods of entering are guaranteed to be considered. And please forgive me if you don't hear from me if you're not the winner. I get dozens of responses each day. Also, I've turned off comments because otherwise people will post the correct answers there. I hate to shut down discussion, but I want you to figure out the answer on your own. The giveawaysThis year, I'll be giving both a weekly prize and one grand prize at the end of my Road Trip project. Here's how it will work:For the weekly prize, I'll pick a winner at random from among all those who correctly identified one of that week's daily challenges. You get one entry into this drawing for each correct entry you submitted that week. For the grand prize, which is a major brand video game console, the winner will be the person who answers the most daily challenges correctly during the entire project. So there's definitely an incentive to play every day and to answer correctly as often as possible. Be warned: last year, there was no shortage of people who had the right answer most of the time, so the competition for the grand prize will be stiff.Given the constraints of the work I'll be doing on Road Trip, I have to minimize the complexity of the Picture of the Day challenge, so if you want to accumulate right answers and compete for the grand prize, you must use the same e-mail address and name each time. If you use a different name or e-mail address, your answers won't be counted together. For complete information and rules about the Picture of the Day challenge, please click here. Good luck today, and throughout the summer. The disclaimer: NO PURCHASE NECESSARY TO ENTER OR WIN. MUST BE A LEGAL RESIDENT OF ONE OF THE 50 UNITED STATES OR D.C., 18 YEARS OLD AND AGE OF MAJORITY OR OLDER IN STATE OF RESIDENCE AT DATE OF ENTRY INTO SWEEPSTAKES. VOID IN PUERTO RICO, ALL U.S. TERRITORIES AND POSSESSIONS AND WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW. SWEEPSTAKES ENDS 11:59:59 PM PT ON 8/7/11. SEE OFFICIAL RULES FOR DETAILS.

0 Vote(s)

The pentalobe screw as seen in the MacBook Pro, iPhone 4, and MacBook Air.(Credit:iFixit)Tamper-resistant screws are popping up in another Apple product, the iPhone 4, and some users say they're feeling screwed by the change.Among the most outraged, it seems, is iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens, who sent out an e-mail today blasting the tech giant for its change to a proprietary, tamper-resistant screw called a pentalobe on later shipments of the iPhone 4. Wiens believes Apple stopped using standard Phillips and Torx screws on the iPhone 4 and other products to "keep you out of your own hardware."Apple has not yet responded to CNET's request for comment. But while some are annoyed by the change, not everyone thinks it's a bad idea. "As a service tech, you would be surprised to see how many people open up their machines to try and fix them before bringing them in for warranty service. And in doing so [they] cause more damage than the original problem was," wrote a commenter on iPodnn. Some consumers feel strongly that users should have the ability to open up their devices to remove and replace batteries, memory, and drives. Then again, notes another commenter to iPodnn, "Apple is selling an 'appliance experience.' If you don't like that, don't buy these products. When's the last time you tried to open up your cell phone, clock radio, or car stereo Or your TV These aren't user-serviceable devices and neither are iPhones, iPods, or iPads. Factor that into your buying decision." The new fasteners reportedly first appeared in the battery lock of mid-2009 MacBook Pro laptops. The pentalobe reappeared again in the 2010 MacBook Air, which used the screw on the lower case. The &34'Liberation Kit&34' includes a driver to remove Apple&39's proprietary screws, a pair of Phillips screws, and a Phillips screwdriver (click to enlarge). (Credit:iFixit) iFixit posted an extremely detailed blog on the matter titled "Apple's Diabolical Plan to Screw Your iPhone." It states that there are three variations of the five-point pentalobe circulating in Apple hardware. Those of you outside of the U.S. will be sad to know that "non-U.S. iPhone 4 units have had smaller versions of these evil screws all along." But what really gets Wiens going is this: iFixit claims to have spoken with several Apple store Genius Bar employees who confirm that when consumers are bringing their iPhone 4 in for repairs, the company is switching screws without consent, no matter the service performed.Of course, iFixit has a financial stake in calling attention to the situation. It's readied a $9.95 solution amusingly called the "iPhone 4 Liberation Kit," which includes a driver to rid your phone of the proprietary pentalobes and replace them with standard Phillips screws. First there was an Antennagate. Are we now looking at Screwgate

0 Vote(s)

Intel is not to be counted out of the smartphone battle yet, as its chips are headed to 35 tablets (including some already available) and &''premier&'' smartphone vendors in 2011, Reuters reports based on comments from the company&'s CEO Paul Otelinni. The news follows on the heels of our report yesterday regarding Intel&'s new tablet and netbook unit &8212' the creation of which we found suspiciously quiet. Otellini says the tablets, including those from Dell, Asus, Lenovo and Toshiba, will roll out of the first half of 2011. Smartphones running Intel&'s Medfield chip will land in the second half of next year.Intel&'s pursuit of smartphones is &''a marathon, not a sprint&'', Otelinni said. The company isn&'t slowing down after the release of the first Medfield chip. Otellini added that Intel&'s second-generation Medfield chip for smartphones is already being tested by customers and is expected to ship towards the end of 2011 and early 2012.I suppose a marathon is a good analogy for Intel&'s strategy &8212' except Intel&'s competitors already have several years ahead of the company in this particular race. What good is positioning its strategy as a marathon, when it&'s clear the company was just running in place as its competitors passed it byNext Story: Best Buy offering free iPhone 3GS with contract today Previous Story: Xing snaps up event startup AmiandoPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Atom, chips, CPUs, Medfield, smartphones, tabletsCompanies: IntelPeople: Paul Otellini Tags: Atom, chips, CPUs, Medfield, smartphones, tabletsCompanies: IntelPeople: Paul OtelliniDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Toyota, maker of the best-known hybrid to date, announced today a new family of its Priuses, including a plug-in version slated for release in 2012.Not unexpectedly, considering that a major industry auto show is happening this week in Detroit, Toyota took the announcement an extra step by using social media as part of its pitch. Executives answered questions about the new models of Priuses via a Twitter chat, and an announcement was also made available via livestream on the company&'s website.Ita4a4s not the first time Toyota and others have experimented with social media to build hype for new offerings. The carmaker chose to announce its release of six new hybrids by 2012 via atweet last year. Nissan has set up a Twitter account for its all-electric Leaf, where it retweets opinions of new Leaf owners and test drivers.Last year, Ford launched an aggressive, nationwide social mediacampaign for its well-reviewed, high gas-mileage Fiesta that had industry watchers declaring it a a4Awinnera4 in social media awareness, ranking it above its competitors.Earlier this month, electric car company Tesla chose to announce via blog the completion of a working prototype of the company&'s 2012 all-electric Model S sedan. The companyreleased a trio of high-quality videos that showed a walk-through of the car&'s engineering, rather than opting for a traditional press release. (A Vimeo is worth a thousand words, perhaps)But social media can also lead to hiccups. VentureBeatreported the news two days ahead of Tesla&'s announcement because a company employee let the news slip via a comment he penned on a Model S story. And electric cars appear to still betough to produce and sell en masse, as the Prius Plug-In is slated for limited release, like the Nissan Leaf and Ford Focus Electric. The Prius Plug-In will initially be offered in the 14 states where 60 percent of existing Priuses have been sold: Arizona, California, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Virginia and New Hampshire. Toyota says the plug-in Prius will become available to the rest of the U.S. a year after initial rollout. While social media is clearly an increasingly integral part of car marketing, it doesn&'t change the fact that the Toyota Prius Plug-In will be up against more green car competition than it had when the original Prius launched 10 years ago. The company website states battery range will cover 13 miles of emissions-free driving, less than the 25 to 50 miles of battery-powered driving the partially electric hybrid Chevrolet Volt offers.[Image via army.mil]Next Story: Hands on with the Verizon iPhone&'s 3G hotspot (video) Previous Story: Toyota Prius Plug-In: Can it measure up to Chevrolet, Ford and Nissan&'s offeringsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Chevrolet Volt, electric cars, electric vehicles, Fiesta, Leaf, Nissan Leaf, Prius, Prius PHEV, Prius Plug-In, VoltCompanies: Chevrolet, ford, Nissan, Tesla, Toyota Tags: Chevrolet Volt, electric cars, electric vehicles, Fiesta, Leaf, Nissan Leaf, Prius, Prius PHEV, Prius Plug-In, VoltCompanies: Chevrolet, ford, Nissan, Tesla, ToyotaIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
