Time Warner Cable&39's iPad app.(Credit:Time Warner Cable)Just two weeks on the App Store and Time Warner Cable is once again scaling back the number of channels available on its live TV application for theiPad. But unlike the last time this happened, this crop could be gone for good.Bowing to legal pressure from News Corp, Viacom, and Discovery, Time Warner Cable has removed 11 channels from the application, cutting away at the 32 it had offered before. Though a scant number when compared with home cable packages, which can number in the hundreds, the app represented the step toward taking that same lineup on the go. The channels being cut this time around are: Animal Planet, Black Entertainment Television, Country Music Television, Comedy Central, Discovery Channel, FX, MTV, National Geographic, Nickelodeon, Spike, and VH1.In a statement, the company said it would fight the move:We believe we have every right to carry the Fox Cable Networks, Viacom, and Discovery programming on the iPad app. But, for the time being, we have decided to focus our iPad efforts on those enlightened programmers who understand the benefit and importance of allowing our subscribers--and their viewers--to watch their programming on any screen in their homes. In the meantime, we will pursue all of our legal rights against the programmers who don't share our vision. The enthusiasm of our customers and the programming partners who have embraced the app, rather than those who are solely focused on finding additional ways to reach into wallets of their own viewers, has convinced us more than ever that we are on the right path.We will continue to fight to ensure that our customers have access to the content they pay for, no matter which screen in their home they choose to view it on.Part of that fight is bringing additional channels to the application in the near future. "We will be providing replacement channels as quickly as we can, perhaps as early as tomorrow," the company said on its dedicated application site. "You won't need to change anything or update your app in any way to receive these or the additional channels." Reports that Time Warner Cable was being pursued with legal action by networks cropped up last week, with offense being taken that the communications company was overreaching by distributing content through something other than its set-top boxes. Despite the service only working for customers of Time Warner Cable TV and Internet services, as well as requiring Wi-Fi , Simmermon said more than 300,000 users have downloaded the application. In fact the initial influx of users was too much for the company to handle, forcing it to cut 17 of its channels temporarily to cope with demand."While we've received our share of customer complaints about the app on Twitter and in the App Store, none of them have said 'We really wish this thing had fewer channels on it. It's just not fair to the programmers,'" Simmermon said.

0 Vote(s)

A mock iPad 2 seen at this year&39's CES. (Credit:Engadget)Apple has the next generation of itsiPad in production, according to a Wall Street Journal report that appears to confirm many of the rumors that have been circulating for the past couple of months. The newtablet will feature a faster processor and a built-in camera for videoconferencing, but it will have the same display resolution as the first model, according to the report, which cited people familiar with the matter. The new model will reportedly be sold through current partners AT&T and Verizon Wireless--suggesting it might be dual mode for both GSM and CDMA networks. However, the report did not indicate when the new iPad might be hitting store shelves or what the pricing might be.An Apple representative declined to comment.Apple has sold 14 million iPads since its release last April, 7.33 million units alone during the holiday quarter, and Piper Jaffray expects Apple to sell 27 million iPads in 2011. All of that fervor has helped fuel rumors of specs, sightings, and even a claimed component acquisition. Tech site 9to5Mac claimed earlier this month that it had acquired what it believed to be an iPad 2 LCD, "fresh out of China." The news site found the display to be lighter, thinner, and of higher quality than the current iPad's display, but it could see no evidence that it offered higher resolution than the existing model.Though a number of sites have reported finding higher resolution graphics in recent builds of Apple's iOS, an analyst cited by Apple Insider in January said the iPad 2 would not have a high-resolution Retina display, corroborating an earlier CNET report.Earlier this month, a Reuters "eyewitness" claimed to have seen an iPad 2 prototype at the press unveiling of News Corp.'s The Daily. However, that alleged sighting did nothing to confirm or dispel rumors that the new device will sport a USB port.Component makers in Taiwan said in December that Foxconn--a key maker of iPhones and iPads--had been notified that it should be ready to ship 400,000 to 600,000 units of the new device by the end of February. That aligns nicely with another rumor that has pegged February 14 as the release date for Apple's iOS 4.3, the newest update for iPhones, iPads, andiPod Touches. Might an iPad 2 announcement be included in a press event announcing iOS 4.3 Stay tuned.

0 Vote(s)

The U.S. government yesterday gave four biofuel companies loan guarantees of nearly $650 million to help build plants that will make motor fuels from sources like animal fat, orange peels, and trash. The government is supporting the development of new feedstocks for ethanol to ease dependence on corn. Nearly 40 percent of the U.S. corn crop goes to making ethanol, which has spurred concerns from environmentalists and food groups that production of the fuel can raise food prices. The Agriculture Department gave Coskata loan aid of $250 million to build and operate a 55 million gallon-per-year (gpy) plant to make cellulosic ethanol from woody biomass in Alabama. It was the largest loan guarantee ever for a U.S. biofuels producer, said the Renewable Fuels Association, an industry group. "Our belief is the industry is here to stay," said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, of cellulosic ethanol in a press teleconference. "There is still tremendous opportunity here." Making commercial amounts of advanced fuels at prices competitive to fuels made from corn and soy oil has proved difficult, prompting several small companies to fold. U.S. environment regulators late last year slashed the amount of the advanced fuel that must be produced this year. The Energy Department offered Diamond Green Diesel, a joint venture between Valero Energy Corp and Darling International, a loan guarantee of $241 million. The aid will support the construction of a 137 million gpy renewable diesel plant in Norco, La., to make fuel from animal fat, used cooking oil, and other waste grease. The company estimates the project will create 700 jobs. Under loan guarantees, the federal government commits to paying portions of private loans in case the companies default on them. The USDA also offered Enerkem Corp a loan guarantee of $80 million to build a biorefinery that will produce 10 million gpy of advanced biofuel from municipal trash in Mississippi. And it awarded INEOS New Planet BioEnergy $75 million in loan aid to make biofuels from citrus waste and other agricultural debris in Vero Beach, Fla. The recession has also slowed development of new feedstocks that are supposed to begin replacing corn. An early recipient of federal assistance, Range Fuels, has decided to shut down operations while raising more investment money. Range Fuels received an $80 million USDA loan guarantee in 2009, following a $76 million Energy Department grant in 2008 for a plant in Georgia, and raised $100 million in private capital in 2008. Jonathan Silver, the chief of the Energy Department's loan guarantee program, said until now, the Energy Department had faced challenges in helping producers of new biofuels. In part, that was because financiers there had trouble understanding how sales from such plants work in commodity markets, Silver said at the Clean-tech Investor Summit in Indian Wells, Calif. Separately, the government also issued loan aid to solar power. The Energy Department awarded $967 million in loan aid to an NRG Energy subsidy to help pay for the world's biggest solar plant using photovoltaic panels at the Agua Caliente plant in Arizona.
