Netflix announced today it has signed a deal with Paramount Pictures to bring the studio's content to its streaming service in Canada. The five-year deal will deliver more than 350 movies to the service. Some of Paramount's more recent hits, including "Iron Man 2," will be available, as well as those dating back generations, like 1954's "Sabrina."The deal with Paramount also includes "exclusive subscription television rights to all first-run films." That means Netflix will be able to stream Paramount's content before HBO, Showtime, and other subscription providers can.Netflix's addition of Paramount content is a boon for Canadian customers. Since the launch of Netflix in Canada in September, the company has been adding more content providers as it tries to catch that service up to its streaming platform in the U.S. (Netflix's service in Canada is streaming only.) This partnership will go a long way in helping it achieve that goal.Currently, some Paramount content is available to U.S. customers. However, to bring it to the service, Netflix had to sign a reported $1 billion deal last year with Epix, a joint venture among Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate, for access to some of those studios' content. Currently, Epix is offering "Iron Man 2," "Shutter Island," and many other recent releases for streaming on Netflix. The deal with Paramount follows a recent report from The Wall Street Journal, saying that Netflix was close to signing a five-year, $100 million deal with movie studio Miramax. If the deal is signed, Miramax could be bringing up to 700 movies to Netflix. In a bid to further improve its offering, Netflix has also acquired its first original series, "House of Cards" starring Kevin Spacey. It has so far committed to 26 episodes of the show.As Netflix adds more content, recent reports suggest it will lose some, as well.Last week, CNET reported that Showtime is planning to remove its series, including "Californication" and "Dexter," from Netflix in a new deal following the companies' current arrangement, which expires over the summer. Showtime is owned by CBS, the parent company of CNET. For its part, Netflix told CNET that it was still in talks with Showtime, and it fully expects to "renew" its deal with the company. It's a similar story from Starz. Last week, the network said that as of April 1, it will no longer allow its original series to stream on Netflix the day after they air on its channel. Going forward, the company said that Netflix customers will need to wait 90 days to stream its content on the service.

0 Vote(s)

Call of Duty: Black Ops has broken sales records and been lauded by reviewers since debuting in November. Now, Microsoft has named itXbox Live's top title of 2010.Call of Duty: Black Ops is aiming high.(Credit:Activision) According to data compiled by Xbox Live's director of programming, Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, Black Ops beat out the likes of Halo: Reach, Red Dead: Redemption, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 to secure the top spot. Nelson formed the list by compiling the number of unique users logged in each game's first seven days. This strays from the lists posted in 2008 and 2009, which displayed a full year's worth of data. Nelson defended his methodology by saying, "I did the first seven days since that is a way to normalize the data and give all games a fair chance." Read more of "Black Ops is Xbox Live's top game of 2010," and see the other top titles, at GameSpot.

0 Vote(s)

At Le Web 10, everyone saw the awkward expression on Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley&8216's face when host Loic Le Meur asked him just how large the acquisition offer was that the company recently turned down. Le Meur guessed around $140 million (whether that offer came from Facebook, Yahoo or another company wasn&'t really mentioned, but they are the likely bidders and the topic of the on-stage conversation was Facebook when the question dropped).Crowley didn&'t deny it, and then went on to acknowledge that number is &''ballpark&''.Which means Foursquare turned down a $140 million-ish offer, probably from Facebook, when they&'d only raised about $1.35 million in seed funding &8211' they went on to raise $20 million more after the buyout talks died down. Visionary, or foolish Brave, or bubbleFor what it&'s worth: Foursquare just passed 5 million users, and is seeing 2 million check-ins and 25,000 new users on a daily basis.CrunchBase InformationFoursquareInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Take that, Apple and Nintendo. Sony announced that it will launch a next-generation portable entertainment system. At an event in Tokyo, the Japanese electronics giant showed off the NGP, a code name for what Sony calls the &''ultimate portable entertainment experience.&'' The replacement for the PlayStation Portable, first launched in 2004, will debut at the end of the year. It&'s about time Sony made its move, since the PSP is getting trounced 2-to-1 by Nintendo&'s DS and it has also been outrun by Apple&'s iPhone and iPod Touch devices, which are increasingly being used for gaming. The NGP will offer a combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context, Sony said. The NGP will focus foremost on immersive gaming, just as the PSP did. But the new device will have both Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity. (That means that, with a little software, it could be used as a phone). The device will let users tap into experiences where they can encounter, discover, connect, share and play with friends while on the move.Sony says the device will have a stunning organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display that is five inches diagonally. It will also have a multitouch screen, a high-performance central processing unit, a graphics processing unit, as well as a multitouch pad in the rear of the system. The device will also have super oval design, shaped to fit a user&'s hands. It will have two analog sticks, for playing games in the traditional PSP mode. Every game title for the NGP will have a space called LiveArea, where users can share the application running with other players. Users can access games &8212' provided by both Sony and third-party developers and publishers &8212' via the PlayStation Network.Users will be able to see a live feed of achievements of other gamers who are playing the same game as the user. The device will also have an application called Near, which is a location-based service that will be pre-installed with the system to let users find out which friends are in the vicinity. Users can meet those friends over the wireless network and share game information with them. The device will have a new storage media, a small flash memory-based card, for NGP software titles. The games will have expandable higher capacity in the future, as memory technology improves and becomes more densely packed. The NGP has two cameras on its front and rear so that users will be able to do video conferences. It also has three motion sensors, a gyroscope, accelerometer, and electronic compass. All of that will make it into a precise motion-sensing machine.Sony also announced something called PlayStation Suite in conjunction with the NGP. That means that newly released games for Android-based portable devices can also be played on NGP. That means that NGP users will be able to access a huge library of casual game content normally played on mobile phones. The device has what will likely be a screaming fast ARM Cortex A9 quad-core microprocessors, as well as an SGX543MP4+ graphics chip. It measures 182 millimeters in width by 18.6 millimeters in height by 85.5 millimeters in depth. the screen can display 16 million colors and has a high-definition 16:9 aspect ratio. It has built-in speakers, directional buttons, 802.11b/g/n wireless networking, Bluetooth, and the typical buttons associated with the PSP.The inclusion of the PlayStation suite marks the first time that Sony users will be able to enjoy PlayStation content on an open operating system. It essentially means that Sony games will be able to run on Android smartphones and other devices. Sony will certify each device as to whether it can play PlayStation games or not. The smartphones will have to run Android 2.3 or later.Previous Story: Groupon in China &8212' why it could succeed where others have failedPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Dean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Sports app startup Zepp has a mobile app that can finally fix your golf swing golf swing. The company showcased a motion-capture application that can be used with sports like golf and tennis. It ran through a demo of the app on stage at today&'s Launch conference in San Francisco. Its first application, Golfsense, is in Apple&'s App Store application approval process and will come out soon, the company announced today. The company manufactures a motion-capture device that attaches to a glove or a user&'s hand and tracks the person&'s motion. Golfsense, for example, tracks a person&'s golf swing and rates it.If it&'s a terrible swing, the app makes some suggestions about how to fix it. The app displays a 3-dimensional map for each swing the user takes, and overlays it with what a good swing should look it.Golfsense users can also sync up with other Zepp users and trade swing data. If there&'s a professional playing golf nearby with a Zepp device, amateurs can download his or her swing data and compare it to theirs. There&'s also a practice mode that lets users swing repeatedly as if they were at a driving range and gives a bulk rating a4" as well as specific suggestions on how to improve swings. The company seems pretty bold in its pricing. It wants to charge between $200 and $300 for the application and the motion sensing device that attaches to a glove. But Zepp&'s motion capture technology can be applied to other sports a4" like tennis or football a4" so the price point might be worth the trouble. Zepp also plans to release an Android and Windows Phone 7 application soon.Next Story: Five and Fifty brings the Groupon approach to instant deals Previous Story: Toyota to launch home electric car charger, jumping into a crowded marketPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, Application, Golf, iPhone, motion capture, motion-sensing, Windows Phone 7Companies: Golfsense, Zepp Tags: Android, Application, Golf, iPhone, motion capture, motion-sensing, Windows Phone 7Companies: Golfsense, ZeppMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
