The best way to test battery life is to get a robot to do it. In lieu of a robot, I drafted a computer for the task. It&39's just an immobile robot anyway, isn&39't it(Credit:Eric Franklin/CNET)Earlier this week, we posted some very interesting tablet testing results. Today, it's smartphones. Over the last few weeks we've tested a number of smartphones in a multitude of ways. If you're looking for talk time tests, however, check the full review of each phone. The tests detailed here will focus on real-world speed as well as audio and video battery life.Phone nameVideo battery life (in hours)Audio battery life (in hours)Boot time (in seconds)Web page load time (in seconds)Apple iPhone 4 iOS 4.2.1 (AT&T)9.9403610Apple iPhone 4 iOS 4.3 (AT&T)n/an/a378Apple iPhone 4 iOS 4.2.1 (Verizon)10.3673910HTC MyTouch 4G6.621610Motorola Atrix 4G7n/a486Samsung Nexus S8.115277How we test smartphonesIn the CNET Labs, we currently run four different tests to evaluate the performance of smartphones. Battery lifeWe evaluate battery life by continually running a movie file on the smartphone until its battery dies. We do the same with audio using a full album set on repeat all. For audio battery, each phone runs with its default mobile network on' for video battery, the phones are run in Airplane mode.During the movie battery-drain, we set eachtablet to Airplane mode and adjust its respective brightness to 140 candelas per square meter (cd/M2) or as close to that number as is possible. For theiPhone, we run the iPhone version of "Toy Story 3." For Android phones, a 720p version of "Toy Story 3" is run. The reason we chose 720p for Android was that most Android phones are capable of running 720p video and we wanted the best quality video represented. On iPhone, we ran the movie through itsiPod app' for Android, we used the movie player, mVideoPlayer, as it provides a much-needed repeat video function that not all native Android movie players include. Site-loading speedWe used GiantBomb.com as our Web site of choice' it doesn't use Flash or have many dynamic elements. Each tablet was connected to the same closed network (not its mobile network) with no other devices on it, with the router about 5 feet away. The test began the moment we pressed Enter, with the end of the test signified by the disappearance of the browser's progress bar. We measured speed in seconds, with a lower number indicating faster performance. We used the latest version of each respective phone's OS. Obviously, for the iPhone 4, we used both version 4.2.1 and 4.3 of iOS. Boot timeRebooting your phone can sometimes solve issues you might be having with apps not functioning correctly, so it's good to know how long it take to get back to action. The test begins when we press the power button and ends when we see the lock screen on iPhone and after the internal storage has been set up on Android phones. AnalysisWe definitely saw some interesting results here. In our tests, the Verizon iPhone 4 had much longer audio battery life than its AT&T counterpart. This likely has a lot to do with the Verizon iPhone 4 having an easier time maintaining a mobile network signal than the At&T version does. It's likely, then, if you live in an area like San Francisco where AT&T coverage isn't the best, you may see longer battery life with a Verizon iPhone 4 than with At&T's. Also, apparently iOS 4.3 makes a definite difference in Web speed and it'll be interesting to see what effect the OS' improved Safari speed has on the iPad, since the Xoom beat it in our previous tests. As for Android phones, the Nexus S has the longest video battery life, but the Atrix is--by a slim margin--the fastest at loading Web sites. Overall, although iOS 4.3 speeds up the iPhone 4, it's still not quite as fast as the Atrix or Nexus S. What that means to you will depend on what effect losing 1 to 2 seconds while surfing has on your schedule. We'll be updating this post with new results as we receive them, so keep an eye out.

0 Vote(s)

Apple'siPhone 4 and Google's freshly minted Nexus S share a critical core component inside, underscoring Samsung's presence in some of the most popular devices on the market and how it is triangulates relationships between its own products and it chip customers. Google&39's Nexus S has a contoured 4-inch screen.(Credit:Google)Google makes no bones about what's inside its slick Samsung-manufactured Nexus S: a 1GHz "Hummingbird" processor. That's a close cousin of--if not identical in many respects to--the processor inside of Apple's A4 system-on-a-chip, as a TechInsights analysis (PDF) revealed earlier this year. "It's common in the electronics industry for competitors to get chips from the same source," said Joe Byrne, an analyst The Linley Group. "But it is somewhat of an odd situation for Samsung to develop chips and make their own systems (products). It does put them in a weird position," he said. Byrne continued. "The Samsung-Apple deal is odd in that a system company (Apple) is doing a custom chip with a semiconductor supplier--that is, Samsung--that also has a system business. There's a potential triangle there." The plot thickens when the new Samsung Galaxy Tab is added to the mix. That tablet has emerged as the principal competitor--with 1 million units sold in about two months--toApple's iPad. Samsung's Galaxy Tab uses the same--or similar--processor as the iPhone 4 and Nexus S. Samsung is obviously a large company with different arms that have competing interests. And, in that sense, it's not unlike Intel. Samsung is doing, however, what Intel, on principal, has avoided: making branded consumer systems and also supplying chips to companies that compete with those systems.

0 Vote(s)

I&39've read it, but I&39'm still a pervert.(Credit:4th Amendment Wear)Last week, I had the privilege of telling you about new underwear featuring allegedly TSA scanner-proof radiation shields designed to cover your naughty bits. The privacy-protecting garb is one way to protest the airport body scanners that many people find to be invasive and in violation of Fourth Amendment rights.(Credit:4th Amendment Wear)We've asked the Transportation Security Administration how the undies will fly in the security line and haven't yet heard back whether the leaf-shaped blockers will single you out for a hands-on search, which could be even worse. So if you want to let the TSA agent know you're not happy about mandatory virtual strip searches, check out this new line of T-shirts, skivvies, and socks from artist Mike McQuade called 4th Amendment Wear. It's a series of underwear with either the phrase "Read the 4th Amendment, perverts" or the text of the Fourth Amendment printed in magnetic ink, so it can be read by the people manning the scan machines. I like this passive-aggressive way of letting a stranger know you don't like them seeing you naked. T-shirts go for $45, a bra and panties set is $30, and boxers are $24, though not everything is currently available. Nonmetallic-ink versions are available for a little less but aren't nearly as cool. For those wondering, the Fourth reads thusly:The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. We could get into exactly what that means in relation to the TSA scanning machines, but there have already been enough pixels about that. So for now, I'll just note that the existence of these undergarments means that my plan to get the Fourth Amendment tattooed on my chest is now unnecessary.

0 Vote(s)

[UPDATE: We spokea4sto Peter Thiel today who felt his comments on Saverin were taken out of context and exaggerated. He clarified, "I don''t have a strong opinion on his work performance, but I do think that he did very well during his very short time at Facebook. I didn''t mean it to be a hit on him."]As far as I know, and my Web searching skills can take me, early Facebook investor Peter Thiel hasn&'t yet publicly commented on the role of Eduardo Saverin, who co-founded and initially bankrolled &8216'thefacebook&' back in the early days.Well, Thiel did exactly that, on Big Think (video below). Asked who Saverin is, Thiel says he was &''affiliated, quasi-employed at Facebook in 2004&8243'. The fun doesn&'t stop there. If you&'re familiar with the origins of Facebook, whether or not you call yourself familiar with it because you&'ve seen the movie The Social Network or not, you&'ll know that Saverin was pushed out just when things got rolling for the fledgling company. This happened around the time PayPal co-founder turned investor Peter Thiel and Napster co-founder Sean Parker got involved. Saverin famously sued Facebook and CEO Mark Zuckerberg in April 2005, and prevailed. He still owns 5% of Facebook (which means he&'s worth over $1 billion nowadays)Thiel chides Saverin for not being cut out for his role and that he wasn&'t remotely doing his job at the time, which was supposed to be selling advertisements for Facebook. Ultimately, Thiel says, Saverin did well for not doing much.He also says The Social Network was &''wrong on many levels&'', and the Hollywood&'s &''caricature of capitalism&''.The full transcript is copied below the video, which can also be watched here.Question: Who is Eduardo SaverinPeter Thiel: He was a student at Harvard who was affiliated, quasi-employed at Facebook in 2004.Question: What kind of capitalism is it that cuts Eduardo Saverin out of FacebookPeter Thiel: Well, it is the kind of caricature of capitalism that one sees in Hollywood where, I think the movie was wrong on many levels. It was basically a description of sort of a zero sum world that is mainly the way Hollywood works where people gained at the expense of other people. You know I think Face&8230' the story of Facebook has been one where ita4a4s been an incredible positive sum gain for everybody involved for the investors, for the employees, and for the world at large. All the stakeholders have really gained tremendously. You know, I dona4a4t think&8230' I dona4a4t think that Eduardo was cut out. You know, he was not doing his job and therefore you know. His job was to sell advertisements for Facebook and he was not remotely doing that job. You know, he ended up making a lot of money because he was partially involved and had helped in some small financial ways in getting the site started at the very beginning at Harvard. But I think the overall context of it was that it is a story where he did extraordinarily well relative to what he had done and I think therea4a4s a very&8230' therea4a4s a very different.CrunchBase InformationEduardo SaverinPeter ThielFacebookInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Skype, a provider of voice and video calling services over the Internet, might be poised to release video calling for mobile devices equipped with a front-facing camera and running Skype at the Consumer Electronics Show next year, according to a number of reports. The service already has video conferencing built into its PC and Mac applications. The application uses webcams and can connect to other Skype users. But video calling isn&'t available on Skype&'s mobile app. Mobile users instead have to use applications like Tango and Apple&'s Facetime for video calling. That&'s largely because mobile video calling wasn&'t that big of a deal a few years ago when front-facing cameras weren&'t standard. But most mobile phones have front-facing cameras for video calling today. The next generation of tablets will include them as well. The Samsung Galaxy S and Research in Motion&'s upcoming BlackBerry Playbook tablet feature front-facing cameras, and the new iPad probably will as well. The software to execute video calling today is rather fragmented, and right now it seems like little more than a novelty application. Having a single application that works across multiple devices would do wonders to take video calling on mobile devices mainstream. That is, if Skype can keep its network up and running. Skype recently suffered a widespread and lengthy outage with its Internet calling service that affected tens of millions of people. The company said in apost that problems with the Skype networka4a4s a4Asupernodesa4 are responsible and could take hours more to fix. Skype apologized to users, particularly some businesses that began to rely on Skype for their calling needs.Based on that reaction, it&'s clear that Skype has widespread placement in the voice-over-Internet market. If Skype decides to release video calling for all of its existing applications, it could significantly stretch its market share. But, as usual, this is the Internet a4" so take all these rumors with a grain of salt.Previous Story: Viacom ditches Rock Band, Dance Central after selling off music game developer HarmonixPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: front-facing camera, mobile video, video calling, video conferencing, voipCompanies: Apple, Google, nokia, Skype Tags: front-facing camera, mobile video, video calling, video conferencing, voipCompanies: Apple, Google, nokia, SkypeMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Apple confirmed today that it has sold 1 million copies of its Apple TV media player. The company predicted last Tuesday that it was going to hit the 1 million sales mark later that week. Maybe thata4a4s why Apple didna4a4t actually announce the milestone via press release &8212' instead, the news came out when AllThingsDigitala4a4s John Paczkowski took the initiative to ask the company if it actually crossed the threshold it had predicted, and Apple said yes.The new design, new features, and reduced $99 price were supposed to move the Apple TV out of the companya4a4s a4Ahobbya4 category and turn it into a serious moneymaker. With 1 million devices sold in three months, the plan seems to be working, though it remains to be seen whether Apple can really take the lead in the Internet-connected TV category the way it did with music players, smartphones, and most recently tablets &8212' in fact, digital-video player maker Roku says it&'s nearing the same sales milestone. One big obstacle to Apple TVa4a4s mass market appeal is the company&'s limited success in convincing TV networks to price their new episode rentals at 99 cents. Chief executive Steve Jobs successfully forced music industry executives to accept his terms for selling music thanks to the dominance of Apple devices and the iTunes store. I suspect Apple TV will need a much larger audience before Jobs can do the same thing to uncooperative networks. (Not that movie and TV episodes sold through iTunes are limited to Apple TV owners.)On the other hand, the new Apple TV is certainly off to a more auspicious start than Google TV.Next Story: Crafty marketplace Etsy could make $50M this year Previous Story: Will charging infrastructure be the electric car&'s speed bumpPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Apple TVCompanies: Apple Tags: Apple TVCompanies: AppleAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
