Wondering how to tell your friends where you are for New Year&'s There are a host of hot location-based startups which let you check in to a venue and broadcast your whereabouts to friends. Since I write about these services regularly, I decided to ask the founders of these companies where they&'d be for New Year&'s. The coolest choice of place meant that service got the honor my check-in.You may remember these guys from VentureBeata4a4slocal heroes series, where we asked them how they use their services in their daily lives and how that drives the design of their products. Consider this a timely update.Dennis Crowley, Foursquare &8212' In an email, the co-founder said, &''JFK Airport, Atlanta airport, Ritz Carlton Atlanta(for his buddy&'s wedding), The Georgia Aquarium (cause his girlfriend really wants to go), Atlanta airport, JFK airport.&''Crowley also noted that he purposely didn&'t research anything else to do in Atlanta as he plans on relying on Foursquare&'s &''tips&'' feature for suggestions.Sam Altman, Loopt &8212' Altman plans on heading home to St. Louis to visit his family. Past that, he plans on meet up with friends from high school and heading out on a good old-fashioned bar crawl. Altman notes that he will definitely be checking in but has no idea exactly where yet.Seth Priebatsch, Scvngr &8212' For New Years, Priebatsch plans on heading to Times Square in New York City to support his company&'s partnership with American Eagle to support the Big Brothers and Sisters of America charity. American Eagle is donating $5 for every check-in/challenge done and Scvngr plans onmatching it. Hopefully people will be able to battle the snow drifts and still make it to Timesqaure.Josh Williams, Gowalla &8211'Straight from Williams himself, &''A few days ago, I checked in at a fireworks &'superstore&'somewhere in north Texas. Without elaborating too much, tomorrow night&'s check in may or may not be within Austin city limits. And by the way, do you know how difficult it is to search the web for &8216'Austin City Limits&' What I want are legal boundaries for the use of small and colorful explosives. What I get is some PBS show that is evidently moving to a new venue in 2011.&''It would appear that Williams is going to be checking in to his own fireworks show, city limits permitting.Only one otherfounder fromthe Local Heroes series, Keith Lee of Booyah, did not get back to me yet. We may just have to wait for his check in to see exactly where he isthis New Year&'s. I&'ll be sure to update the post when I hear from him.So, who&'s the winner I&'m going with Foursquare for the sole reason that aquariums are cool and Crowley will be at one. If I was giving a second place, it would go to Scvngr because it&'s always good to give to charity.Next Story: The Cartographer app brings gorgeous custom and offline maps to your iPhone Previous Story: Will Trion World&'s Rift online game kill World of WarCraft (interview)PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: charity, check-in, location, location based services, location-based, New YearsCompanies: Booyah, Foursquare, Gowalla, loopt, ScvngrPeople: Dennis Crowley, Josh Williams, Keith Lee, Sam Altman, Seth Priebatsch Tags: charity, check-in, location, location based services, location-based, New YearsCompanies: Booyah, Foursquare, Gowalla, loopt, ScvngrPeople: Dennis Crowley, Josh Williams, Keith Lee, Sam Altman, Seth PriebatschCody Barbierri is a social and digital media consultant.
They walk &8212' or rather, sit &8212' among us. At any given time there are hundreds of thousands of people playing the multiplayer version of the Call of Duty Black Ops combat game. And you&'ll know them from their absence from the rest of the world on Tuesday, February 1.That&'s the day when the hot-selling online warfare game, whose sales racked up $650 million in five days and have already topped a record-setting $1 billion, will get a further boost: The first Black Ops map pack, Call of Duty Black Ops First Strike, will debut exclusively on Microsoft&'s Xbox Live online service. If video games are the new Hollywood, map packs are the new, smarter sequel. Instead of coming years later, though, like rehashed studio fare, these downloadable expansions to existing games keep players addicted to a recently released title. Here&'s what will go down on February 1: Hardcore gamers are likely to converge on Xbox Live and download the map pack for $14.99, or 1,200 Microsoft points. As proven by last year&'s Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 map packs, the launch of this kind of downloadable content is as huge as a major launch of any other huge blockbuster game. $14.99 may not seem like a lot of dough &8212' a movie ticket doesn&'t cost much less these days &8212' but it will likely dent sales of new games. For the video-game industry, the impact will be obvious. February&'s retail sales numbers &8212' which will already be low because of a shortage of Xbox 360 consoles and Kinect motion-control systems &8212' may be weaker than usual since the downloadable map packs are not counted in retail sales figures produced by market researcher NPD.And for the rest Even if you don&'t play, you&'ll feel the impact, from workplace absences to empty beds. As we noted before, spouses of gamers may care about this so they can plan their solo vacations and make sure they don&'t plan any romantic holidays around Feb. 1. (Yes, it was nice of Activision Blizzard not to schedule this on Valentines Day). On top of that, they consume the time of hardcore gamers as they extend the value of online play with new multiplayer arenas. A year ago, the two map packs for the previous Call of Duty game, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, sold more than 20 million units. That generated roughly $300 million in sales for Activision Blizzard. What&'s in these packs that promises to hold gamers&' attentions The First Strike maps will include four settings: Discovery, in the Antarctic research station that is a scene in the game' Kowloon, set on the rooftops of the district of Hong Kong' Berlin Wall, featuring a firefight at Checkpoint Charlie, where the Americans and Russians squared off' and Stadium, set in an American hockey rink. It also includes a Zombie map dubbed Ascension.Kowloon looks cool with a &''zip line&'' you can slide down to move quickly from one end of the map to another. The Discovery map has a snow bridge that can be blown up with a grenade. Berlin Wall has more room for sniping and a &''no man&'s land&'' in the middle that is covered by auto-turret machine guns. The Stadium game is a short-range map where tactical insertion, or finding a key point to enter the map, is important. Dan Bunting of developer Treyarch says that users wanted more vertical movement through buildings, more opportunities for long-range sniping, and interactivity.Clearly, Activision Blizzard planned this map pack in advance. Last year, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 sold more than 20 million units. But the first map pack for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 wasn&'t ready until March 30, or 4.5 months after the first game debuted. This time, Activision Blizzard is debuting the first map pack for Black Ops just 84 days after the debut of the game itself. I&'ll be one of the people downloading the map pack on the first day. I&'ve already achieved 50 out of the 50 levels available on multiplayer and am cycling through again, at 20 out of 50 for my second time around. And it hasn&'t gotten boring yet. Check out the video preview of the map pack below.Next Story: Perfect Market raises $9M to fund newspaper moneymaking tools Previous Story: Plastic Logic announces $700M investment to make its plastic e-readers in RussiaPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Call of Duty Black Ops, First Strike map packCompanies: Activision Blizzard, TreyarchPeople: Dan Bunting Tags: Call of Duty Black Ops, First Strike map packCompanies: Activision Blizzard, TreyarchPeople: Dan BuntingDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Angry Birds, the mobile game phenomenon created by Finland&'s Rovio, is headed to Facebook in the next month. The Angry Birds fan page on Facebook says the game will come to the social network in the coming weeks. That could dramatically widen the audience for the game, as Facebook has more than 600 million users. It could also generate a lot more revenue, since good games tend to spread in a viral manner on Facebook and generate considerable sales of virtual goods. Rovio has shown that game companies can come up with huge hits using a &''mobile first&'' strategy, but moving to Facebook makes a lot of sense since Angry Birds has proven to be a hit on every platform where it debuts.Angry Birds has had well over 75 million downloads since it launched on the iPhone in December, 2009. The paid version of the game dominated the App Store for a year and continues to sell well. Angry Birds is also available on Android, WebOS (Palm), Symbian, Windows, the Mac OS X, and the PlayStation Network. The game has proven that it&'s possible to create a mega-hit in a very short time in the new world of smartphones, tablets and mobile devices &8212' even without the natural virality of Facebook. Angry Birds is so popular as a cultural phenomenon that celebrities like Conan O&'Brien are glomming onto it, making themselves look cool in the process. Now the company is turning the hit game into a franchise not unlike Nintendo&'s 25-year-old Mario character, spreading the cute little birds with the angry eyebrows far and wide into plush toys and other media. In the game, the green pigs (pictured) steal the eggs of the birds, who become angry and slingshot themselves at the fortresses of the pigs. The title is simple to play, since you just pull your finger along the surface of the touchscreen to aim the slingshot. It will be interesting to see how Rovio can adapt the game to Facebook, since most computers don&'t have touchscreens. Angry Birds is also slated to come out on the Wii and Xbox 360. And Rovio is releasing a new version of the game to come out as a promotion for the animated film Rio.Next Story: 4chan founder&'s next project revealed: Canv.as Previous Story: Entrepreneur Corner: Avoiding costly customers and the valuation debatePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Angry Birds, RioCompanies: Facebook, Rovio Tags: Angry Birds, RioCompanies: Facebook, RovioDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
