Western Digital&39's new My Book Studio Edition II offers up to 6TB of storage.(Credit:Dong Ngo/CNET)Since the release of the 3TB GreenPower drive, it's only been a matter of time before Western Digital incorporated that hardware into a dual-drive external storage device to offer what is currently the largest desktop external hard drive. The company unveiled its first 6TB drive, the My Book Studio Edition II, last month and I have just finished taking a close look at the drive. Like previous version of the My Book Studio or the My Book World Edition, the My Book Studio Edition II takes the shape of a closed book standing upright as on a shelf. The top of the drive holds the drive bays' door, which can be opened and closed with a hard press. Via this door the hard drives can be replaced easily. You do need to use WD GreenPower hard drives, as the enclosure won't work with others. Related links&149' Full review of the My Book World Edition (1TB)&149' Full review of the LaCie 2big (2TB)&149' Full review of the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra-portable (1.5TB)The two internal hard drives can be quickly set up in either RAID 0 or RAID 1 using the included WD Drive Manager software. Preformatted for Macs, the storage can be easily reformatted into NTFS to be used with PCs. If you want to use the 4TB or 6TB version of the drive, make sure to use it with a Windows Vista orWindows 7 machine, as Windows XP won't be able to recognize it due to legacy standards. The My Book Studio Edition II features USB 2.0, FireWire 400/800, and eSATA, but lacks USB 3.0. This is because it was designed primarily for use with Macs, which don't currently support USB 3.0. The drive was quite fast in testing, especially with the eSATA connection. However, it took a long time to be recognized by the computer and to get out of its sleep or low-power mode, about 2 minutes in each case. This is rather inconvenient when you need to access a drive quickly and don't have much time to wait.To make up for this the drive comes with a very affordable price tag, with the 6TB version costing just around $500. To find out if this is the ultimate external hard drive that you've been looking for, check out the full review.

0 Vote(s)

White hot movie-streaming service Netflix could be looking to become the Web version of HBO as it negotiates to acquire an original television series directed by "The Social Network"&nbsp''s David Fincher and starring actor Kevin Spacey. The talks, originally reported by Web site Deadline Hollywood, were later reported by The Wall Street Journal, which quoted unnamed sources and said the discussions were part of a larger, "behind-the-scenes" effort by Netflix to hit up Hollywood production companies for original material to entice new subscribers to its streaming service. The Journal also said Spacey's representative had confirmed the talks. The Fincher-Spacey series is a political thriller called "House of Cards" and is based on a novel and BBC miniseries of the same name. Both the aforementioned Tinsel Town players are part of a team of executive producers working with production company Media Rights Capital on the project.Deadline Hollywood said Netflix was trying to insure its victory over other bidders by signing on for two seasons of the series for more than $100 million. But the Journal's source said that if successful, Netflix would probably pay much less.Under the terms, Netflix would buy the right to distribute the series online before anyone else could make it available, the Journal reported, but Media Rights Capital could make subsequent deals for later broadcast or DVD sales. If reached, the agreement would, in this case anyway, turn the TV industry on its head, making the Internet the first channel of distribution as opposed to an outlet for shows that have already been seen elsewhere. It could also help Netflix cover its tail from attacks by rival Hulu, as well as Amazon and Facebook, both of which have recently threatened to jump into the market for streaming-entertainment.It would also diversify Netflix's offerings, a circumstance that could become increasingly important as Hollywood becomes ever more wary of the upstart's rapid growth and the potential threat it represents to revenue from DVD sales, pay TV services, and traditional broadcasters.HBO, of course, has enjoyed great success with original shows, such as "Sex and the City" and "The Sopranos."

0 Vote(s)

Mobile handset maker Sony Ericsson is suing wireless broadband provider Clearwire for trademark infringement. In a lawsuit filed in U.S. district court in Virginia on Friday, Sony Ericsson said that Clearwire's green and white swirl logo is confusingly similar to its own green and white swirl logo.Sony Ericsson said that it became aware of Clearwire's plans to use a similar logo in late 2009. And in January 2010 it contacted Clearwire to express its protest. Clearwire is building a nationwide wireless broadband network using the technology called WiMax. It sells fixed and mobile broadband services and in May 2010 it announced it plans to sell a mobile phone that uses its WiMax service. In November, the company said that the plan to offer its own mobile phone had been delayed. Sony Ericsson, which makes mobile phones, says that Clearwire's plans to sell mobile phones that use the Clearwire network and sport the Clear swirl logo will confuse customers, since Sony Ericsson also sells mobile phones.Sony Ericsson has been using its green swirl since 2001 when it was established as a company by its parent companies: Sony and Ericsson. The company says that its trademark swirl is well recognized in Europe, but it says that in the U.S. where the Clearwire service and products are sold, that it's not as recognizable. Sony Ericsson is asking the court to stop Clearwire from infringing on its trademark and copyright. It's also asking for at least $150,000 in damages as well as legal fees.A Clearwire representative declined to comment.

0 Vote(s)

More good news for Silverlight it seems, as based on two new job postings on Microsoft's site (1, 2), the company is looking to hire additional Silverlight engineers, as well as bring the technology to more of its devices--including theXbox.Blog TechTrends discovered and reposted the positions earlier today, before Microsoft removed the reference to the Xbox, which was referred to as "Silverlight on the Xbox as part of the next wave." The posting has since been changed to refer to "various devices we plan to enable over the coming years." The news comes less than two weeks from Microsoft's Silverlight-focused developer event, where the company plans to detail "the future of Silverlight" in a keynote address by Scott Gutherie, corporate VP of Microsoft's developer division. This is also after much brouhaha about the technology's role as part of Microsoft's ongoing strategy and how it will play into the development of future products and services. The idea of Silverlight coming to the Xbox is not so far-fetched, though. It would serve many goals, notably making development for the platform more cohesive with some of Microsoft's other developer tools--including the ones used for makingWindows Phone 7 applications. If Microsoft is positioning the next Xbox to play within its app ecosystem, as the inclusion of a Zune Marketplace suggests, getting Silverlight on there is a necessary first step. Silverlight on the Xbox would also bode well for Microsoft finally including a Web browser as part of the Xbox's system software, which it has not yet offered. In all truth, this did not crop up as a necessity for the device until Microsoft began adding third-party applications like Facebook and Twitter, where if you came across a URL someone had posted, you would be unable to follow it forward. There's also that not-so-secret meeting that took place between Adobe Systems' and Microsoft's CEOs last month, where getting something like Flash onto the Xbox, and the Windows Phone 7 could have been among the topics of discussion. Another outlier in the case for Silverlight befitting the Xbox is Netflix, which makes use of the technology for its movie streaming service on the PC andMac. While it got off to a bumpy start, it's since gone on to have many of its kinks ironed out, enough to the point where the company is now offering the streaming portion of its service a la carte. If there are benefits--either in performance, or faster compatibility with Netflix's feature updates, Silverlight could help make a big difference in giving Microsoft an edge over the myriad devices that can now hook up with the video service.

0 Vote(s)

Add the Federal Communications Commission to the list of legal headaches for Google caused by its Wi-Fi spying debacle. The Wall Street Journal reported today that the FCC opened an investigation into the Google Street View scandal earlier this year, but hadn't disclosed it until recently. As is common knowledge by now, Google disclosed in May that Wi-Fi sniffing equipment on its Google Street Viewcars--which the company says were intended to capture only benign data--also captured so-called "payload data," including e-mails and passwords. It's not clear exactly what the FCC could be looking at, but if Google were determined to have intentionally captured the data it could be in violation of wiretapping laws. The company has insisted the collection was inadvertent, and the FTC recently ended a separate inquiry into the matter without any penalties. Google is still facing a class-action lawsuit over the practice that might ultimately uncover the most information about its Wi-Fi Street View program.

0 Vote(s)

Opera Mobile, a full-fledged browser, is now available in beta form for Android phones.(Credit:Screenshot by Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)The browser wars have extended to mobile devices, and that's good news for consumers.Last week, Mozilla released a second Firefox beta for Android. Yesterday, Opera released its first Opera Mobile beta for Android. Neither is ready for prime time, much less used on more than a tiny fraction of phones, but already I see them as a step forward. Why Because now there's an important new front in the browser wars. And while that means more stress for browser makers and more testing for Web developers, it holds the potential to dramatically improve browsing for the rest of us.Today's browser market on personal computers is on fire. Programmers for all five of the major browsers--Internet Explorer,Firefox, Chrome,Safari, and Opera in descending order of usage--are working to add major new features to benefit users. Among the biggest changes are performance and a host of new Web technologies.I don't expect themobile browser market to be as fluid and dynamic as the desktop browser market. But I do expect improvements from the competition. That might even be secondary improvements. Browser companies copy good ideas liberally from one another--tabs, password and bookmark synchronization, hardware acceleration, and any number of Web technologies that grow up into standards. That means, for example, if Google hears that enough people like the forward button in Opera and Firefox, not just the back button in the built-in Android browser, perhaps Google will add it in.Another example: JavaScript speed tests are all the rage for desktop browsers as browser makers seek to top rivals on this crucially important Web technology. They're a relative rarity among mobile browsers, but Mozilla and Opera both pointed them out. Expect that publicity effort to be contagious.Maybe even others will benefit. There's plenty to like about Apple's iOS devices--responsiveness, a richly populated App Store, a slick user interface. But there's one thing iOS users have to like whether they want to or not: the browser. That's because Apple bars other browsers from the iPhone, excepting some quasi-browsers such as Opera Mini, a relatively passive vessel for boiled-down Web pages sent from an Opera proxy server that does the heavy work of reading the Web page. Opera Mobile, by contrast, is a full-fledged browser engine on its own but makes no appearance on the iPhone. One big drawback of having browser choice is that, at least on Android's default setup, the user is presented with a choice of browsers to complete the request every time an application presents a Web page link. Tap on the Amazon Kindle app's store link--what browser do you want to use Follow Web address from the Twitter or Facebook apps--what browser do you want to use You can set one to be the default browser for handling such requests, but Apple's approach enforces a cleaner process. Mozilla&39's Firefox for Android is now in its second beta version.(Credit:Stephen Shankland/CNET) Another drawback is that the alternative browsers can be an awkward fit. Firefox and Opera Mobile are chiefly cross-platform products that sometimes mesh awkwardly with prevailing Android interfaces. Opera Mobile has yet to wire up the eminently useful menu button, but instead presents its own toolbar of options taking up precious screen space all the time. Using an Android trackball moves a little mouse pointer that looks decidedly alien on an Android phone, and you can't use the trackball to move from a username to a password field, like you can in other Android applications. The Opera interface will be familiar to Opera users on any number of other devices, but in the big picture it's probably better to fit in with the Android ways.So browser choice means complications, but my preference still is to be able to pick my own browser. On top of performance and interface differences, some browsers offer services to unify your mobile and PC experience. With browser services for synchronizing passwords, including as Firefox Sync and Opera Link, passwords stored on a desktop can be remembered, for example. Some Firefox extensions work on the mobile version, too.Computer industry executives love to profess their fondness for competition--usually when asked about how they feel about a rival's superiority in some way. I always suspected that it's often lip service: they'd rather have the more comfortable position of dominance. But as cliche as the idea is, competition really can be healthy, especially in areas such as Web browsers where it's relatively easy swap one out for another.IBM's mainframes, Digital Equipment Corp.'s servers, Microsoft's Windows--these technologies are among those that achieved dominance over rivals that led to a dangerous complacency. Apple has been leading the mobile industry around by the nose, but it doesn't have that much dominance. So perhaps, indirectly, browser competition on Android will even help those in the iOS world. It's hard to imagine somebody switching smartphones today just because of the browser, especially with market barriers such as two-year service contracts. But it's also hard to imagine that mobile browser makers will be immune to the competitive zeal of the desktop browsers.

0 Vote(s)

Vimeo&39's &34'couch mode&34' has been designed so Google TV and home theater PC users can watch Vimeo&39's video content from across the room.(Credit:Screenshot by Josh Lowensohn/CNET)Watching Web videos on your couch is nothing new, but with Google TV's rollout now in full swing, having a big-screen-friendly version of your video site is very much in vogue. The latest site on that growing list is Vimeo, which has just released something it's calling "couch mode." Users who point their browser toward Vimeo.com/couchmode get a full-screen video player, with big buttons and straightforward navigation to various video playlists. The idea is that you can hit the site from your Google TV, home theater PC, or even laptop and veg out to full-screen videos without UI distractions. Included in couch mode are things like Vimeo's HD playlist, its staff picks, any videos registered users have uploaded to the service, new videos from channels they subscribe to, and a list of favorites. Couch mode also integrates Vimeo's recently introduced "watch later" feature, which lets users bookmark videos without adding them to their favorites list. This can be especially useful if you're video surfing and find something you may want to watch, but others in the room don't particularly care for. Another nice touch worth mentioning is the ability to dig into extended information about a video and its author, all without leaving the couch mode interface. This is very different from Google's own leanback experience, which fires you off to a new, regularly formatted tab in your browser. To use couch mode, users need to be running Chrome orSafari, Vimeo says. Related: Some networks blocking Web shows on Google TV

0 Vote(s)

NISKAYUNA, N.Y.--The incandescent bulb is under fire for being an energy hog, but don't expect one single lighting technology to take its place. At a General Electric-hosted event on lighting here yesterday, lighting designers and technology developers said people should look forward to greater diversity in lighting products, rather than a dominant light source that meets all needs. That means people need to better understand the strengths and weaknesses of different technologies, both new and old, and use them for specific applications, they said. Plugging into new lighting technologies (photos) "There's no source that's going to beat everything. LEDs are great for certain things, but HID [high-intensity discharge] metal halides have some really great advantages," said Michael Myer, researcher in the energy and efficiency division of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, during a panel. "I really don't think in my lifetime we'll see a stadium lit with LEDs."One of the drivers for change in lighting technology is government-led efforts around the world to improve efficiency, the equivalent of fuel efficiency standards for vehicles. In 2012, for instance, a law will go into effect in the U.S. in keeping witb efficiency mandates pointing toward the phase-out of 100-watt incandescent bulbs. But even prior to legislation in the U.S. and elsewhere, demand for incandescent lighting is half what it was five years ago, said John Strainic, global product general manager for GE Lighting. In its place are compact fluorescent bulbs and increasingly LEDs , which promise an improvement in efficiency and last far longer than other lighting technologies. GE's 40-watt-equivalent LED bulb for general lighting, for example, is projected to last over 20 years, assuming three hours of daily use.The shape of lighting to come An LED bulb from GE coming out later this year. The fins along the side are heat sinks.(Credit:Martin LaMonica/CNET )Different manufacturers are making LED bulbs with the familiar screw-in bottom but the technology opens up possibilities for integrating lighting in other ways. For example, furniture could include built-in light sources, said Anil Duggal, a research scientist at GE Global Research. Lighting lingo But cost is a serious barrier to the adoption of LEDs. GE expects that its 40-watt equivalent will cost about $50, according to a company representative. Philips will be selling a 60-watt equivalent, which gives off over 800 lumens, through Home Depot starting in December with a price tag between $40 and $50."There's no source that's going to beat everything. LEDs are great for certain things but...I really don't think in my lifetime we'll see a stadium lit with LEDs."--Michael Myer, researcher, Pacific Northwest National LaboratoryThere's also concern in the industry that shoddy LED bulbs aimed at consumers are flooding the market. "Some days it feels little bit like wild, wild west," said Strainic. "We've seen it before--products come into marketplace when products really aren't ready."Consumer education is going to be particularly important in the years ahead, which makes labeling of general lighting products far more important than in the past. The U.S. Department of Energy is developing an EnergyStar certification for LED bulbs, and new bulbs now use a Lighting Facts label that includes information on lumens, lumens per watt, color temperature, and color-rendering index.Competition in LEDs, in particular, appears to be heating up with both newcomers and incumbent lighting providers racing to drive costs down. But manufacturers still aren't turning their backs on old technologies. GE will devote about half of its lighting research budget this year to solid-state lighting, but it will continue manufacturing fluorescent lights, including a hybrid halogen-CFL. It's also investing in organic light-emitting diode (OLED) lighting, which can be printed onto sheets of plastic, and seeking good applications for it. Designers, meanwhile, continue to apply the same time-honored techniques when choosing the best light source. A hotel's desk lamps, for example, have very different requirements from museum lighting, where maintaining light quality for a long time is one the most important features. Also, lighting professionals now have better tools to measure lighting characteristics and costs, which makes it easier--particularly for commercial customers--to choose between different technologies, said designer Domingo Gonzalez. "Don't go overboard with the technology," said Janet Lennox Moyer, the principal of Jan Moyer Design. "We need to integrate it with the old fundamental information we've worked so hard over the years to gain."

0 Vote(s)

Making everyday products more functional for senior citizens doesn''t have to mean making those products more ugly, as UK home renovation firm Ruby Slippers has already demonstrated. New York-based Omhu is a company with a similar philosophy. Its flagship product a4" the Omhu Cane a4" is a walking stick that brings smart design and new style to a category sorely in need of upgrading. The Omhu Cane is a4Aa walking stick with attitude,a4 in the company''s own words. Inspired by Scandinavian furniture as well as a4Abicycles, hockey sticks and skateboards,a4 the cane features cheerful colours and a generous birch handle with grip strips that not only offer better hold, but also don''t slip when leaned against a wall. The wood is hand-treated with Livos oil for an all-natural, non-toxic, plant-based finish, while the lightweight, high-strength aluminum shaft is finished in American bicycle paint. The Omhu Cane''s patent-pending tip, meanwhile, is made from the same material as high-performance athletic shoes for cushioning, traction and support. Available in six colours, the Omhu Cane is priced at USD 125.Aging may be inevitable, but drab style and lackluster performance don''t have to be. Good design, in fact, is just one more way to target the senior demographic in a positive, empowering way a4" as opposed to all the early approaches focusing on illness and limitations. There will be more than 1.5 billion people worldwide over the age of 65 by the year 2050, according to the US Census Bureau. Isn''t it time to upgrade the way they''re served...
Path launched two weeks ago with a swell of buzz. Then came the backlash. It was swift and merciless. &''It&'s a social app that discourages large-scale social sharing a4" WTF,&'' seemed to be the main complaint. Well, love it or hate it, Path is sticking to its, yes, path. But an update tonight brings a few nice updates.First and foremost, you can finally use pictures taken outside of the app. Previously, you could only load up the app, hit the camera button, and take a picture to share on the service on the spot. The reason for this was that they wanted to make sure your path was being shared in realtime from where you really were. But the latest version of the app, 1.0.2, has a new &''Library&'' button in the camera area. Hitting this allows you to pick any photo from your camera album. But read that carefully a4" it has to be from your camera album. In other words the picture still has to be one taken with your iPhone camera. Again, there&'s a reason for this.If you choose to upload one of your camera album pictures to Path, it looks to see where that picture was geotagged and what time it was taken. If you try to tag it to a place in Path, you&'ll notice that the venues listed are those near where the picture was taken, not where you are at the time of the upload. Also, thea4spicture is then inserted into your Path stream corresponding to when it was taken, not necessarily as the newest picture. Again, the idea seems to be to keep your path accurate. This allows you to take all the pictures you want with your iPhone camera and upload them to Path later, while keeping your path intact.a4sIt&'s an interesting solution.Other updates in the latest app include revamped profile pages, which make it easier to stop sharing with someone or to pause them. And it&'s also now slightly easier to find other Path users to share with. One thing still not included is a way to share to other social networks. And yes, the 50 friend limit is still in place. Again, Path is sticking to its path. You can find Path here in the App Store.CrunchBase InformationPathInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Nlyte Software (formerly Global DataCenter Management) closed a $12 million series C investment led by NGEN Partners with Balderton Capital, Ruffer LLP and Montalcino Holdings participating in the round. The Menlo Park green IT company provides data center infrastructure management (DCIM) software and services. Nlyte Software&'s chief executive Joe Temple says, &''We help data center managers with capacity planning, so there&'s an efficient use of power, cooling and space, and optimal placement of data assets [within their facilities].&'' Datacenter owners and managers can use nlyte to understand and predict: what&'s in their ever-changing inventory of equipment' where every server or rack is located within their facilities' how systems that are run by this equipment may be effected as it is moved around' and how the data centers can be tweaked to operate more efficiently.According to a new study from KTHa4a4s Centre for Sustainable Communications, the global IT and telecom sector in 2007, defined in a way that excludes the impact of the increasingly digital media and entertainment sector, accounted for at least 1.3 percent of the worlda4a4s total greenhouse emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions from cloud computing alone are expected to triple by 2020, according to forecasts by Greenpeace. DCIM solutionsa4" like those offered by nlyte, Emerson Network Power, and Modiusa4" reduce data center energy consumption by 20% on an annualized basis according to Gartner research. Nlyte&'s website claims its software can extend the lifetime of an existing data center facility by 75% or about 5 years. Nlyte sells to businesses that have 100 or more racks in their data centers. &''Wea4a4ve only seen one data center in one hundred today taking advantage of this type of technology which represents a huge opportunity for us,&'' Temple said. IDC researchers have counted more than 106,000 data centers of this size in operation today. Cloud computing, outsourcing and other trends are contributing to increased demand on existing data centers, and the build of new data centers, Temple says.Nlyte plans to use its series C growth capital to market its services in North America, primarily, with some expansion plans in continental and Eastern Europe, and Asia-Pacific Rim. With the investment, NGEN&'s managing director Rosemary Ripley, will join nlyte Softwarea4a4s board of directors.
Apple has had a long head start in mobile apps over new archrival Google. But new data shows that the number of Android apps has grown 127 percent since August and offerings in Google&'s Android Market should outnumber the total for iPhone apps by mid-2012. Apple&'s App Store wares grew 44 percent in the same time. The data comes from the App Genome Project, a research project undertaken by Lookout Mobile Security, a mobile app security company. Lookout is examining every single app on both the Android Market and the App Store' it doesn&'t count updates or apps you can no longer download.Apple has 348,894 apps available now, compared to 243,037 in August. The Android market has 87,785 apps, compared to 38,729 in August. Part of Google&'s success may lay in its developers&' prolificity. Android Market developers typically release more apps than Apple App Store developers, said Kevin Mahaffey, cofounder of Lookout, in an interview. On average, the Android Market has 6.2 apps per developer, while the App Store has 4.8.Google&'s Android Market also has looser approval policies than Apple, which has drawn criticism for its strict review process.Calling all developers: We want to write up your app for VentureBeata4a4s Mobile App Spotlight! The company is behind a solar thermal plant planned for Arizona for which the DOE&nbsp'granted a $1.45 billion loan guarantee, its largest renewables loan to date.Taiwan Semiconductor looking into LEDs, solar &8212' The world&'s largest contract chip manufacturer said it may set up units in LEDs and solar to capitalize on the growing markets in those areas, Reuters reported. The company has invested $200 million into a solar plant in Taiwan and has a stake in thin-film solar startup Stion. Last year, Taiwanese LED company SemiLEDs became a public company on the Nasdaq.Demand for solar still strong despite Germany cutbacks &8212' Solar stocks have largely been depressed due to fears of a regulatory overhaul in Europe, most notably in Germany, which made up about half of the world&'s solar demand last year due to its generous subsidies. But a Reuters analysis argues that growth in demand in the U.S. and Italy have given solar suppliers a solid first quarter, meaning they&'ll likely do well come earnings reports later this month.GE Hitachi and Lockheed Martin sign nuclear deal &8211'&nbsp'GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy and Lockheed Martin joined forces on a major nuclear deal this week.
Team VentureBeat is still recovering from DEMO Spring 2011, the product-launch conference we co-produced in Palm Desert, Calif. this week. From Sunday afternoon into the wee hours of Wednesday morning, we went nonstop. As exciting as it is to tell the story of innovation unfolding, it&'s even more of a rush for the companies presenting at the conference. They have a lot at stake &8212' the months or even years of development, the harrowing selection process overseen by DEMO executive producer and VentureBeat editor-in-chief Matt Marshall, the fee if they&'re selected, and the time it takes to get out to the desert. It all came together at the JW Marriott Desert Springs, the site of the conference. You name it, DEMO Spring 2011 had it &8212' and we covered it.Life-saving altitude simulators.Instant market research, just add Internet.A real reason for the mailman to go postal. You&'ve read our blow-by-blow coverage of the launches and the winners of the prestigious DEMOgod award and the $1 million grand prize. But as Marshall said as he kicked off DEMO Spring 2011, this promised to be the most social DEMO ever &8212' from the wired-in startups taking advantage of new social technologies to the nonstop networking and parties on site. After the action on stage, it was the lobbies, the bars, the restaurants and the nightclubs where the DEMO community created real value. I couldn&'t cross a room, it seemed, without hearing about some new funding coming through. All work and no play Hardly. As DEMO&'s self-appointed instigator-in-chief, I made sure people took to the dance floor at the closing party, and the Marriott&'s hot tubs were filled to capacity. After we sweated out the angst of the event to Lady Gaga and the Rolling Stones, we soaked it all up under a starlit sky, with steam roiling off the water, talking about grand plans for the future.Okay, sometimes that future only went as far as the rest of the night, and how we were going to make our early-morning plane flights home. But in a few hours of sleep, we dreamed of the next DEMO &8212' and the next products to rock our world. Here&'s how the event unfolded in photos.VentureBeat&'s Matt Lynley, Matt Marshall, and Owen Thomas start the fire at DEMO Spring 2011.DEMO survivor Redg Snodgrass explains it all.VentureBeat&'s Christopher Peri teaches DEMO&'s Neal Silverman abotu the power of the Perivision hat.Brew PR&'s Dena Cook, Brooke Hammerling, and Dorothy Jean celebrate their trifecta of DEMO companies.VentureBeat&'s Anthony Ha demonstrates his awesomeness.DEMOvians sing at DEMO After Dark.More photos via Flickr:[Photos by Stephen Brashear/New Media Synergy for the DEMO Conference]Previous Story: Ubera4a4s car service comes to Palo Alto with new ratesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: DEMO, DEMO Spring 2011 Tags: DEMO, DEMO Spring 2011Owen Thomas is the executive editor of VentureBeat.
Research in Motion CEO Jim Balsillie may still be smarting from the fact that Apple passed it in smartphone market share last quarter. Steve Jobs made a point to rub it in during Apple&'s most recent earnings conference call: &''a4AWea4a4ve now past RIM, and I dona4a4t see them catching up to us in the near future.a4Asked what he would say to Jobs if he were present today at the Web 2.0 Summit, Balsillie shot back: &''You finally showed up.&'' The implication being that RIM practically invented the smartphone category and is not going anywhere. Balsillie went on to contrast the Blackberry approach to Apple&'s when it comes to web apps. There may be 300,000 apps for the iPhone and iPad, but the only app you really need is the browser. &''You dona4a4t need an app for the Web,&'' he says, and that is equally true for the mobile Web. The debate over mobile apps versus the mobile Web. Blackberry is betting on the Web, much like Google. And to usher in the era of a fully browsable mobile Web, RIM is positioning its upcoming PlayBook Blackberry Tablet as super Web-capable. &''It will be 3 to 4 times faster than the iPad,&'' boasts Balsillie. RIM even put out out this teaser video showing how much faster the PlayBook is at several browsing tasks than the iPad, including its support for Flash. (This is not exactly an independent, unbiased test, but it should be easy enough to replicate once the PlayBook is available in the first quarter of 2011. But even if it is faster, that still might not be enough to make the PlayBook a success.
comScore&'s monthly video data is out for October and it looks like Hulu saw a significant uptick in video ad impressions. Hulu saw 1.1 billion video ad impressions in October, compared to 793 million video ad impressions in September. This rapid growth in ad views is probably attributed an increase in viewership on Hulu thanks to the start of the Fall TV show season.Tremor Media Video Network ranked second overall (and highest among video ad networks) with 533 million ad views, followed by ADAP.TV (435 million) and BrightRoll Video Network (374 million). Video ads reached 45 percent of the total U.S. population an average of 34 times during the month. Whereas Hulu served the highest frequency of ads to its viewers in September (an average of 27.5 over the course of the month)' CWTV.com took the top spot in October. CWTV served an average of 50.8 in October.comScore reports that the top video ad networks with respect to their overall reach in the U.S. are ScanScout at 44.3 percent, Break Media at 42.0 percent and BrightRoll Video Network at 41.9 percent. Video ads accounted for 12.8 percent of all videos viewed and 1.2 percent of all minutes spent viewing video online. In terms of video properties and viewership, Google Sites (whose traffic is mainly YouTube) had 146.3 million unique viewers' Yahoo took the second spot again since September with 53.8 million viewers, followed by Viacom Digital, which jumped by 4 positions in October with 52.9 million viewers. VEVO came in fourth place with 47.6 million viewers and Facebook dropped to the fifth spot after a strong performance in August with 47.4 million viewers Google Sites saw over 2 billion viewing sessions in October, and average time spent per viewer at 272 minutes, or 4.5 hours.Total viewership of online video continue to rise. The data shows that 175 million U.S. Internet users watched online video content in October for an average of 15.1 hours per viewer. Web-connected users in U.S. accounted for more than 5.4 billion viewing sessions during the course of the month with 84.1 percent of the U.S. Internet audience viewing online video in October. The duration of the average online content video was 5 minutes, while the average online video ad was 0.4 minutes. The Hulu numbers are no doubt impressive, and certainly helps the company as it reportedly prepares to go public in the next few months. Hulu CEO Jason Kilar said last week that Hulu now has 30 million users monthly and estimates it will rake in $240 million in 2010, more than double its $108 million revenue in 2009. He also said that the service now has 260 million content streams, 800 million ad streams and over 235 content partners and 352 ad clients. It&'s important to note that while Google is behind Hulu in terms of video ad impressions, YouTube does serve other types of advertising (banner ads, overlays, branded players) that are not factored into comScore&'s data.CrunchBase InformationcomScoreInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

A new SEC filing revealed today that NanoICEa4" a Seattle-area startup using molecular ice to chill and preserve meat, seafood and other raw materials as they are transported or storeda4" has secured a $500,000 investement (in the form of convertible debt financing). According to its website, the company&'s customers include fishing vessels and food retailers today. The systems sold by NanoICE produce molecular ice fractions, or ice crystals that are less than one micrometer in diameter. The &''nanoice&'' can be delivered through something as small as a hypodermic needle, or in large quantities through hoses and pipes. NanoICE aims to curb food waste and end hunger, especially in the U.S., while displacing more energy-intensive refrigeration technology. According to reports by the United Nations Environment Programme GRID-Ardenal (UNEP G-A), in the U.S. 30% of all food, worth some $48.3 billion, is thrown away each year, which means about half of the water used to produce this food is wasted. (Agriculture is the largest human use of water.) Food retailers lose about 26% of the food they store and try to sell. Earlier this year, NanoICE won the Zino Zenith Award for Best Investment Opportunity from entrepreneurs and angel investors in the Pacific Northwest. The company is also testing its technology in a medical context, while selling it within food industries' it may be successful in preserving human organs allowing them more time to travel from organ donors to transplant patients.
