The new 6 series comes closer to the look of the original 6. (Credit:BMW)2012 BMW 650i preview (photos) Ever since the relaunch of BMW's big coupe, the 2003 6 series, fans of the brand had to cover their eyes when walking around the rear of thecar. It lacked the sharklike style of the original 6 series, produced from the late '70s all the way through the '80s. But the 2012 650i, just revealed in new photos from BMW, shows a car with a deemphasized trunk lip, not an exact return to the original style, but a much less offensive design. With its gracefully sloping rear roofline, you can actually say that this car looks good.Given BMW's high-tech engineering, it should certainly be an impressive driver. Under the hood is a twin-turbo direct-injection 4.4-liter V-8, an engine that pumps out a frightening amount of torque, 450 pound-feet at a mere 1,750rpm. Horsepower is rated at 400. And although the car's eight-speed automatic transmission should help it turn in acceptable fuel economy, the available six-speed manual will make driving fans salivate. BMW's high-tech suspension includes automatic damping control, adjustable between Comfort, Normal, Sport, and Sport+ settings. And optional technology includes active roll control and BMW's active steering, which actually steers the rear axle, along with the front. The cabin gets an optional Bang & Olufsen audio system, the first time BMW has worked with the Danish audio brand. This system features 16 speakers and Bang & Olufsen's acoustic lens technology.Click here for photos of the new 650i.

0 Vote(s)

The all-new Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental, which the aviation giant formally unveiled today in Everett, Washington.(Credit:Daniel Terdiman/CNET)EVERETT, Wash.--Sporting an all-new corporate color scheme--red and orange and white instead of the company's traditional blue and white--Boeing unveiled its next-generation 747-8 Intercontinental here today. With the formal unveiling, the aviation giant made it clear that its 787 Dreamliner is hardly its only card in the global commercial aviation poker game. Billed as the most fuel-efficient and cheapest airliner to operate in the world, the new plane seems poised to join its predecessors in the 747 line as an iconic representation of what air travel can and should be.And while preorders of the 747-8 Intercontinental are nowhere near what Boeing saw with the 787, the aerospace giant also appears ready to move to the final stages leading to customer delivery without the numerous, and much publicized, delays of its Dreamliner cousin. Boeing's next-gen 747-8 Intercontinental unveiled (photos) At a media event yesterday, Boeing vice president and deputy 747 program manager Elizabeth Lund said that the 747-8 Intercontinental is currently slated for an early spring first flight, and a fourth-quarter first passenger delivery. Asked if she felt confident about that schedule, Lund pointed out that while you can never predict unforeseen problems, "we started to build on schedule, and we're rolling out on schedule...so we're performing to plan at this point."To date, the 747-8 program has received 107 announced preorders. But of that number, just 33 are for the Intercontinental passenger version, and from just two carriers--Lufthansa and Korean Air--and several private customers. The remaining 74 preorders are all for the 747-8 freighter, which is about a year ahead of the passenger plane. The freighter made its first flight almost exactly a year ago.Lund acknowledged that Boeing would "love" to have more orders for the Intercontinental at this point, but argued that the plane has come to maturity during a very "tough" environment, and said that the aviation giant is "very confident" that the plane will sell well this year. The low preorder figure for the Intercontinental indicates that the market for big, long-haul planes that fly between major transport hubs may not be as sizable as it once was. The Airbus A380, the largest passenger plane in the world, which can carry 525 passengers in a three-class configuration, has also sold in smaller numbers than hoped. Airbus has sold 234 of the planes. Boeing's 787 Dreamliner was said to have had the most preorders in aviation history, though some carriers later pulled back, perhaps because of the difficult economy, and some would say because of the plane's many delays. To date, Boeing says that it has 847 preorders for the Dreamliner.Where Boeing's next-gen 747-8 comes to life (photos) Whether Boeing will ever sell anywhere near as many units as the Dreamliner is unlikely. But with its two-day media extravaganza surrounding the unveiling of the Intercontinental this weekend, Boeing is signaling that it believes in its next-generation 747, and that it is committed long-term to the platform.New wings One major highlight of the Intercontinental is the plane's new wing design. Created using "the latest in computational fluid dynamics validated in the world's most sophisticated wind tunnels," the wings offer improved aerodynamics, and larger fuel capacity while also allowing the plane to be as fast as, or faster than, any other passenger aircraft on Earth."Several elements of the wing design improve performance and reduce noise compared with the 747-400," a marketing document for the Intercontinental reads. "When the flaps are extended, the ailerons automatically deflect and act as additional high-lift devices, improving takeoff and landing performance and minimizing noise." As well, Boeing has replaced the 747-400's vertical winglets with "raked wingtips that increase lift and reduce drag at cruising speeds."At the same time, the new wing design features "fly-by-wire spoilers and ailerons that make it possible to incorporate a flight control feature known as a maneuver load-alleviation system. Pioneered on the 787 Dreamliner, it changes the lift distribution over the wing during non-normal flight conditions, reducing the load on its outboard portion." By using the new system, Boeing said, it was able to make the wing structure smaller, saving 1,400 pounds of weight, while not compromising structural integrity.Clearly, Boeing thinks that airline customers will benefit from the Intercontinental. It eagerly touts the plane's economic and green credentials: It is the only passenger plane in the 400- to 500-seat market, its four General Electric GEnx 2B engines consume 16 percent less fuel per seat than do the engines on the current-gen 747-400, and 11 percent less than the A380. As well, Boeing lauds the Intercontinental's reduced noise: According to the company, the "noise footprint" of the new plane is 30 percent smaller than that of the 747-400. As an example, Boeing said that the new plane will be able to fly in and out of London's Heathrow airport 24 hours a day, while most other aircraft are subject to an evening curfew due to noise.Step into Boeing's next-gen 747-8 Intercontinental (photos) All of this is due to the use of advanced materials in the construction and design of the plane, as well as its use of the GEnx engines, and the form factor and materials of its wings. Most of the plane is made from new aluminum alloys, while it also incorporates graphite composites in the rudder, spoilers, flaps, and other areas. According to Boeing, "the materials are more durable and better able to resist corrosion and damage, which reduces maintenance and increases the time an airplane is available and productive."In addition, the advanced materials are lighter, meaning the new 747 weighs less, and therefore uses less fuel, and costs less to navigate and land. All told, by using the new alloys and composite materials, the 747-8 weighs a ton less than its predecessor. At the same time, the plane features interior designs brought over from Boeing's 777 and 787 Dreamliner that are intended to give passengers a better experience, the company said. Using "curved, flowing lines' sophisticated lighting' new windows' and roomier stowage bins [creates] a spacious, open feeling throughout the cabin."Specs and advantages As designed, the 747-8 Intercontinental will carry 467 passengers in a three-class configuration, and has a range of 8,000 nautical miles. The 747-8 freighter can fly up to 4,390 nautical miles. The Intercontinental has a wing span of 224 feet, 7 inches, and is 250 feet, 2 inches long. Its tail towers to 63 feet, 6 inches high. And its four GEnx-2B67 engines produce 66,500 pounds of thrust. The passenger plane's top cruising speed is Mach 0.86, while the freighter can fly at Mach 0.845. Boeing&39's 747-8 Freighter, which made its first flight a year ago. Boeing said that the 747-8 Intercontinental should make its first flight sometime in early spring this year.(Credit:Daniel Terdiman/CNET)While the Intercontinental was designed to be the same height as the 747-400 and fit into existing 747 slots at airports--meaning that no airport should have to do any reconfiguring to welcome the new plane--its 18.3 feet of added length will allow carriers to add 51 seats, and the revenue that comes with those additional passengers. As well, Boeing designed the new plane so that the flight crew's rest area is located in the upper deck, freeing up space on the main deck and lower hold for passengers and cargo. That means that the Intercontinental can carry 37,000 pounds of cargo--33 percent more than the 747-400, and 8,600 pounds more than the A380. Compared to the A380, the Intercontinental is 10 percent lighter per seat. And all told, Boeing said its new plane has the lowest operating costs per seat of any passenger plane in the world. Due to the costs of fuel, maintenance, and weight-related costs, Boeing says that the plane offers carriers "trip costs" that are 20 percent less than that of the A380, while seat mile costs are 5 percent lower than Airbus' double-decker behemoth. Technology Befitting a brand-new, next-generation airplane, the Intercontinental is essentially a flying computer, Boeing said. That's due to a flight deck brimming with high-tech avionics and navigation systems. These systems include a state-of-the-art flight management computer, a future air navigation system (FANS)-2 data link, a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) landing system, and integrated approach navigation.According to Boeing Commercial Airplanes Communications' Jim Proulx, the new plane also features an airport moving map system integrated into its front display screen, allowing both pilots to see, without moving their heads, their plane's precise location on the tarmac. This means that in low visibility situations, pilots of a 747-8 Intercontinental can easily see where they are at any given time when on the ground. "It's an extra tool to let you know where you are on the runway surface," Proulx said. One advantage that Boeing has with the Intercontinental is that, because the 747-8 freighter has been flying for a year already, the testing program for the passenger plane will be significantly scaled down from what it would be if it was an entirely new plane. That could mean, Boeing would seem to hope, that some of the kinds of delays that have plagued the 787 Dreamliner could be avoided. At the same time, because the Intercontinental is so similar to the 747-400, Boeing expects that pilots flying the current-gen 747 will be able to very quickly get up to speed on the new plane. Boeing said in a brochure that it should take just three days of training for 747-400 pilots to qualify for the Intercontinental. New colorsOne thing that likely surprised most of the people on hand was that the plane was decked out in the entirely new orange, red, and white color scheme. For years, Boeing has painted its test planes blue and white. But Pat Shanahan, Boeing vice president and general manager for Airplane Programs, said that around the world, red and orange are often seen as having a powerful meaning and have long been associated with "prosperity, good fortune, and the promise of success."Now, as the 747-8 Intercontinental moves into its testing phase, Boeing can only hope that the world agrees with the sentiment expressed in a text message posted to the giant video board that attendees could watch the festivities on: "There are airplanes that are 747s, and there are airplanes that wish they were 747s."

0 Vote(s)

Philipp Humm from T-Mobile with Jong-seok Park of LG taunt us all by waiving around their new toys' not (yet) letting us play :((Credit:LG and T-Mobile)Last month, we briefly covered the T-Mobile/LG G-Slate atCES. While information was trickling in then, it seems the flood gates of info will soon be opened for all to willingly dive into.On Wednesday, T-Mobile and LG released new information on its G-Slatetablet. As previously revealed the G-Slate will run on Google's "optimized for tablets" OS, Honeycomb, aka Android 3.0. As exciting as Honeycomb is, it won't be exclusive to the G-Slate and the device will need more than a new UI to get us excited. Here's a list of its attempt:8.9-inch "3D capable" multi-touch display1 GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor32GB of internal memoryBuilt-in gyroscopeBuilt-in accelerometerAmbient light sensorVideo chat over WiFi or 4G network.720p on device playback1080p playback on external display via HDMIFlash supportThe G-Slate will also feature a rear-facing 3D stereoscopic camera-array, which looks to be made up of two cameras, operating in tandem to produce the 3D effect. This will allow users to record 1080p 3D videos and view 3D content on the device or an external display. Unfortunately, viewing 3D on the G-Slate will require glasses (booo!)' the red and blue variety (double booo!). Both cameras are used in tandem to produce the 3D effect.(Credit:Phandroid)In addition, the G-Slate will feature a five megapixel camera with LED flash, plus a front-facing two megapixel camera. LG and T-Mobile expect a release this spring, so look for more coverage in the coming weeks.

0 Vote(s)

The wireless marketing wars rage on as Verizon Wireless claims the "most advanced 4G" wireless network in the world and takes more potshots at rival AT&T.It's not easy to be a consumer these days with wireless operators all claiming to have the fastest and most robust network in the U.S. Verizon Wireless is the latest operator to launch a new advertising campaign that promotes its soon-to-be-launched 4G LTE wireless broadband network. The commercial (embedded below), which features a young man using Verizon's 4G wireless network to throw a lightning bolt into the sky like a javelin, claims that Verizon has the most "advanced 4G" wireless network.Last week, Engadget got its hands on Verizon's print advertising campaign, which once again targets rival AT&T's 3G coverage. In this ad, Verizon shows a map of its 3G/4G network coverage, and then shows a map with AT&T's network coverage next to it. Under the maps, the ad points out that Verizon has 4G coverage and AT&T doesn't.The advertisements are just the latest in a long line of attacks among wireless companies as they vie for customers in an increasing saturated mobile market. More than 90 percent of people in the U.S. already subscribe to a cell phone service. With virtually no new customers to win over, wireless operators are battling each other for existing customers. For consumers, the marketing wars can be very confusing as they try to decipher whose claims are accurate. So-called 4G Verizon Wireless, which is using a technology called LTE' T-Mobile USA, which is using a version of its current 3G technology called HSPA+' and Sprint Nextel, which uses WiMax, all claim to have 4G wireless networks. But the truth is that neither Verizon nor T-Mobile nor Sprint actually offers a true 4G wireless service. While current versions of WiMax and LTE are typically referred to in the industry as "4G," they do not actually meet the International Telecommunication Union's strict definition. To be legitimately considered a 4G technology by the ITU, the network technology is required by the agency to be IP-based and use orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). The other main requirement is that the technology needs to support peak download speeds of 100Mbps. The current flavors of LTE and WiMax are not that fast. And neither is the technology T-Mobile is using, which is called HSPA+.That said, these upgraded networks are faster than the current generation of 3G wireless services. Average 3G services offer between 700Kbps and 1.5Mbps. Sprint's WiMax service, built by Clearwire, offers average download speeds of around 6Mbps, Sprint has said. And Verizon claims that tests indicate it is getting download speeds of between 6Mbps and 12Mbps on its precommercial LTE network. T-Mobile's HSPA+ network also gives a significant boost, with speeds between 3Mbps and 7Mbps.It should be noted that AT&T, which plans to test LTE next year, has also upgraded its network to HSPA+. AT&T is not claiming that its upgrade is 4G. But the technology it has used to upgrade its network is the same type of 3G technology that T-Mobile is using. So when it comes to speed, there shouldn't be too much difference among any of the so-called 4G networks. And in AT&T's defense, the company's upgrade to HSPA+ puts it on par with its rivals in terms of theoretical wireless speeds. So what about Verizon's claims of better 4G coverage Again, this claim should be taken with a grain of salt. Not only will the initial launch of the service be limited compared to its 3G wireless network, it also won't immediately have handsets available that can use the network. Verizon plans to be in 38 markets with its 4G service and offer service to 110 million potential customers by the end of 2010. The company will likely launch the service next week. But it won't offer 4G service everywhere it currently offers 3G service for at least three years, at which point it will offer faster speed service to 285 million potential customers. What's more, Verizon won't initially offer 4G mobile handsets. Through the end of this year, it's expected to be only offering wireless data cards for laptops. At the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show, the company is expected to launch handsets with general availability in the first quarter of 2011. Meanwhile, AT&T's HSPA+ network will reach 250 million customers by the end of this year and it will be available everywhere its current 3G service is available. So in terms of coverage, AT&T will have the largest, fastest wireless network in the U.S. this year, regardless of whether you call it 4G or 3G. AT&T also doesn't have handsets that can take advantage of the faster HSPA+ yet. The company has introduced a wireless laptop card but hasn't indicated when its HSPA+ handsets will hit store shelves. How do the other two major wireless operators stack up T-Mobile USA, which has also been making some bold 4G claims, will be in 100 markets by the end of 2010, the company has said. And it will be available to more than 200 million potential customers. Sprint Nextel (via Clearwire) is in more than 55 markets today and is adding more each week. Its goal is to reach 120 million potential customers by the end of 2010. Longtime ad foes Verizon and AT&T have a history of dueling advertising campaigns. A year ago, Verizon attacked AT&T with an advertising campaign that compared the two carriers' 3G network coverage. Verizon's tag line was "There's a map for that." AT&T sued Verizon over its claims of a superior network, but eventually gave up the battle.AT&T also fought back with its own ad campaign enlisting actor Luke Wilson to tout AT&T's faster 3G network. While AT&T hasn't called out the legal cavalry yet, nor has it hired an actor to take up its cause, in this latest round of advertising wars the company did issue a press release Monday stating i has increased spending on its network 55 percent compared to a year ago, investing nearly $6 billion in the first nine months of the year. The company also claims that speed tests indicate its network is 20 percent faster than its "nearest competitor." And it also claims it completes 98.59 percent of voice calls connected over its network without interruption. "We're very pleased with the nationwide results of the Global Wireless Solutions testing, which demonstrate that we're delivering a superior mobile broadband experience on a nationwide basis," John Donovan, AT&T's chief technology officer said in a statement. "Our top priority for the weeks and months to come is to continue our focus on network enhancements and improvements to ensure continued access to fast mobile broadband speeds and reliable voice service."

0 Vote(s)

Canon's PowerShot S95, a highly regarded new high-end compact camera, is among those models whose raw image files Mac OS X and Apple's photo applications now supports.(Credit:Sarah Tew/CNET)Apple's release of Mac OS X 10.6.5 yesterday carried some improvements for photographers: better performance, and support for raw photo formats from a handful of newer cameras. The release notes mention simply that the update "addresses performance of some image-processing operations in iPhoto and Aperture." In my tests on a dual-core MacBook Pro, however, I found one particular bottleneck is significantly relieved: rendering the raw photos so they can be viewed at 100 percent--when one photo pixel takes up one screen pixel. That's significant, given how frequently a photographer must wait for a computer to turn the raw images from a higher-end camera into something presentable. Aperture users also should see editing and export performance improve over what already arrived in version 3.1 after the OS is updated. Here's one telling tidbit: for a change, I found zooming to 100 percent faster than with Adobe Systems' Lightroom, both on that MacBook and on a quad-core Core i7Windows 7 machine. Also new in the update is support for raw files for several important, new cameras.Raw files, which come straight from the camera's image sensor without in-camera processing, offer higher quality and greater flexibility at the expense of larger file size and the significant hassles of required processing. Many photo enthusiasts prefer them, though, and it's for such files that software such as Aperture and Lightoom are designed. Here's the full list of new cameras with raw support now in Mac OS X:&149' Canon EOS 60D&149' Canon PowerShot S95&149' Hasselblad H4D-40&149' Nikon D3100&149' Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5&149' Sony Alpha DSLR-A290&149' Sony Alpha DSLR-A560&149' Sony Alpha DSLR-A580&149' Sony Alpha SLT-A33&149' Sony Alpha SLT-A55

0 Vote(s)

While Microsoft and Google continue to be fierce tech rivals, Web search is just one of those areas where it pays (literally) to be on as many platforms as possible--even if it's the other guy's. That much can be seen with this morning's introduction of a Google Search application for Windows Phone 7. The app, which can be found in theWindows Phone 7 Marketplace by searching for "Google Search," lets WP7 users use Google's mobile search. Like Microsoft's apps on iOS and Android, it taps into things like your phone's location to add geo-awareness to your Web searches, along with suggestions as you type.Missing from this version, although sure to be offered in a future update, is Google Instant, which made it to iOS and Android phones just last week. When that gets added, it will bring up result pages as users type. Windows Phone 7 hits stores in North America today, after a three week head start in Europe and Australia.
Neither Dell nor Hewlett-Packard nor Sony have laptops that compete directly with the 2.3-pound, 11.6-inch MacBook Air. Is this a new market segment that those three laptop leaders and others will have to address Sony has the Vaio Y series, but that hardly compares to the 11.6-inch MacBook Air.(Credit:Sony)Apple has a knack for creating new markets, theiPad being the most recent example. Though not as groundbreaking or broadly market-defining as the iPad, the smaller Air is clearly unique: wrapped in aluminum, while considerably lighter than a typical 3-pound 11.6-inch laptop. And it packs higher-end silicon--and better performance--than Netbooks. (I spent some time in three different Apple Stores in the Los Angeles area right after the new Airs were announced, and from what I saw, the 11.6-inch MBA elicited the most oohs and aahs--hands down.) I would submit that the Air has wedged itself (pun intended) into an elite sub-2.5-pound laptop segment where little direct competition currently exists. There are hordes of 10-inch class Netbooks out there. But, again, a $350Windows 7-based Netbook is a very different class of laptop. Then there are products like Dell's 11.6-inch Inspiron M101z. But that is a low-end plastic Netbook-class product. 2010 MacBook Air(Credit:Apple)Lenovo--though not listed up top--warrants an honorable mention with its IdeaPad U160 11.6-inch laptop, which has the screen measurements to match the 11.6-inch Air but is about a pound heavier and for all intents and purposes is a fairly conventional Intel Core i series-based laptop that's been squeezed into a tight form factor. And Acer has the 11.6-inch TimeLineX series, but this is three pounds and really not in the same class as the Air. As pointed out in a previous post, Sony has its Vaio X, Y, and Z series, but the former is a Netbook and the latter two are 13-inch designs, which are not nearly as sleek and small (at 4 and 3 pounds, respectively) as the 11.6-inch Air, albeit the Vaio is competitively priced and offers faster Core i series processors and higher-end Nvidia GeForce GT 330M graphics. But, again, size is the key metric for comparison. So, who might offer some direct competition Sony has the technological wherewithal and design sense to come up with a sub-2.5-pound non-Netbook design. If for no other reason than they've done it before. Ditto for Dell in the design sense department. It could downsize the Adamo. But, then, I have to wonder if Dell still has the stomach or incentive to go toe to toe with Apple again, since its Adamo--though stunning--has not generated the excitement of an Apple product. A design like the Sony Vaio X with more robust silicon would compete well with the 11.6-inch Air.(Credit:Sony)And HP I've followed HP-Compaq laptop design since Compaq acquired DEC's Hi-Note Ultra line--one of the first truly ultraslim laptops. The closest thing HP had to the Air in its consumer line was the 13-inch Envy, but that has been discontinued in favor of larger, bulkier 14-inch and 17-inch Envys. (Though refurbished Envy 13s are still available.) Let me add that, like the Dell M101z, I don't think that the 11.6-inch HP Pavilion dm1z series is in the same class as the Air. On the business side, HP and Compaq (which HP later acquired) have produced a long line of light, 12-inch form factor business laptops, currently branded as the EliteBook 2540p--which is a rugged, military-specced ultraportable. If HP tweaked the 2540p's design so it no longer accommodated a built-in optical drive, dropped the thickness below 0.8 inches, and offered a different choice of processors, it would have a serious competitor to the Air. But this may be just wishful thinking. Maybe Apple, once again, will find itself happily flying solo where others dare not go.

0 Vote(s)

Nvidia chips are powering a supercomputer that the graphics chip supplier claims has achieved the fastest speeds to date. The China-based "Tianhe-1A" has hit 2.507 petaflops, beating a system at Tennessee-based Oak Ridge National Laboratories. Chinese Tianhe-1A supercomputer uses 7168 Nvidia Tesla M2050 GPUs and 14,336 Intel Xeon CPUs.(Credit:Nvidia)The new system would top another Chinese supercomputer also using Nvidia chips called Nebulae, rated at 1.271 petaflops (one petaflop is one thousand trillion operations per second). Both the Nebulae and Tianhe-1A performance ratings are based on the Linpack benchmark, the most widely used performance yardstick for supercomputers. Nebulae is currently rated No. 2 in the world based on the Top500 June list. The Oak Ridge system is rated the fastest at 1.75 petaflops, according to the Top500 June list. Tianhe-1A will top the supercomputer list at a Chinese conference that starts tomorrow.Tianhe-1A combines 7168 Nvidia Tesla M2050 graphics processing units (GPUs) with 14,336 Intel Xeon central processing units (CPUs). Nvidia is not only claiming the performance crown but a greener supercomputer, as well. The machine consumes only 4.04 megawatts, making it three times more power efficient than a CPU-only system, Nvidia said in a statement. High-end GPUs typically contain hundreds of processing cores, allowing them to accelerate certain types of computational tasks more efficiently and thereby much faster than CPUs.The machine, which is already fully operational, was designed by the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) and is housed at the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, Nvidia said. In a teleconference yesterday, Tesla chip marketing manager Sumit Gupta said applications of the "open science project" will include astrophysics, material science, and bio-chemistry. Nvidia is also working with laboratories and universities in the U.S. China continues to increase the number of supercomputer systems on the Top500 list and is now tied with Germany at 24 for the No. 4 spot, after the U.S., U.K., and France, according to the Top500 Web site. "China also climbed with respect to overall installed performance and is now holding for the first time the No. 2 spot behind the USA and ahead of Germany," the site said. "China has recognized that they need to invest in high-performance computing to continue to advance their technology, to advance their research and science. They have an economy moving beyond just manufacturing," Nvidia's Gupta said. Because China is relatively new at building supercomputers, the use of GPUs has enabled it to "leapfrog the performance curve," he added.

0 Vote(s)

Lilly Bulawa&39's Sibling Soaker exacts splashy revenge (click to enlarge).(Credit:Design Squad)Ever get the urge to douse your annoying sibling/pal/boyfriend/girlfriend/neighbor/stalker with water (you know, to teach 'em a lesson) A crafty 12-year-old inventor from Ava, N.Y., has just made public-revenge drenchings a lot easier to pull off than they used to be. Lilly Bulawa, one of three winners of a green-design contest sponsored by the PBS competition series "Design Squad," created the "Sibling Soaker," a homemade dunk tank fashioned from common household items. After seeing a dunking booth in action at a fair, she decided that she wanted one for backyard parties. "I made a target out of an old kitchen grease screen that pivots and swings an arm with a pin attached. This pin hits a water balloon hanging off a clothes pin," she said. "Throw, hit target, break water balloon, douse annoying sisters!!"Now, as a winner of the 2010 Trash to Treasure competition, Bulawa has netted the sort of prize even the most seasoned inventor dreams of: she was flown to Boston to watch her innovation bring built by Continuum, a global design consultancy (watch the video below). Trash to Treasure challenged kids ages 5 to 19 to recycle, reuse, and re-engineer everyday materials to create the next great green invention. The device had to fit into one of the three categories: mobility, environmental protection, or play. Lilly's Sibling Soaker, which clearly falls into the latter category (if you're the one doing the dunking), might not seem so green on the surface, but think about how much water it saves, compared with the traditional dunking machines used to keep school principals humble. Also concerned with saving water is Lilly's 14-year-old sister, MaryAnn Bulawa. No doubt fresh off being hit by a water balloon in the family backyard, she came up with another grand-prize-winning invention, the "Smarter Toilet," which lets users decide how much water they need to flush. A bottle at the end of a plunger acts like a removable brick, and a trigger mechanism lets the bottle float up, if a more powerful flush is needed. To further conserve water, rain is directed into the tank, so less fresh water is needed. "My invention will save millions of gallons of water. More then 40 percent of daily water requirements are used by toilets," said the older Bulawa sis, whose Smarter Toilet was also honored at the White House on Monday, as part of President Obama's Science Fair. MaryAnn Bulawa came up with a smarter way to flush (click to enlarge). (Credit:Design Squad)Contest rules stipulated that inventions needed to be made of at least two repurposed materials (fabric, paper, plastic, electronics, wheels, clamps, springs, batteries, wood, string, rubber bands, cardboard, etc.) Another of the top three winners, 14-year-old Daniel Kim of Franklin Lakes, N.J., created the "MiBike," turning an old bicycle into a tricked-out kids' commuter vehicle with side mirrors, a roof to block rain and snow, and a storage compartment for books, pencils, and backpacks. Runner-up inventions (watch out, Dean Kamen!) included the "Heli-Rocket," which sends a toy rocket skyward with an old 2-liter bottle, tubing, and air compression (you stomp on the bottle, and it shoots the rocket up)' the Puck Passer, which uses PVC piping and an old bin to collect a hockey puck' and skates made of materials including magnets, plastic, and floss. This year marks the second Trash to Treasure contest. Last year's winner, Max Wallack, 13, invented the "Home Dome," a temporary shelter for homeless people and disaster victims.

0 Vote(s)

T-Mobile is bringing back the Sidekick messaging phone from the dead, and this time it will be packing Android and support for its 4G network, PC Magazine reports. At a press breakfast today, T-Mobile USA CEO Philipp Humm confirmed that the next-generation Sidekick, as well as a 4G version of Samsunga4a4s Galaxy S, will be a4Acoming soon.a4 The devices, which will run on T-Mobilea4a4s HSPA+ 4G network, are expected to appear in the first half of 2011.We expected the carrier to announce a 4G version of the Galaxy S (we know that LTE 4G versions are headed to Verizon and AT&amp'T), but the resurrection of the Sidekick comes as a surprise. Danger, the company that created the formerly popular Sidekick, was acquired by Microsoft in 2008 &8212' but the only fruits of that union were the failed Kin phones. (Danger called its early smartphones &''Hiptops,&'' but T-Mobile controls the &''Sidekick&'' trademark for smartphones.) T-Mobile has a better chance at finding success with a new Sidekick with the combination of fast 4G speeds and Android.Unlike Microsofta4a4s Kin, I dona4a4t suspect T-Mobile will pursue a not-quite-smartphone approach with the new Sidekick. The device will likely still be targeted at the youth demographic, but ita4a4s easier for T-Mobile to offer Androida4a4s full capabilities on the phone, instead of creating an artificially limited experience like Microsoft did with the Kin. And if T-Mobile can manage to deliver the new device for significantly less than current high-end Android phones, it may be able to recreate its former glory with the Sidekick.Front photo via Umberto SalvagninNext Story: Coca-Cola, Walmart sign up for Bloom&'s new fuel-cell electricity service Previous Story: Samsung buys Liquavista: You&'ll electrowet your displaysPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: 4G, Android, HSPA, Kin, SidekickCompanies: Danger, Microsoft, T MobilePeople: Philipp Humm Tags: 4G, Android, HSPA, Kin, SidekickCompanies: Danger, Microsoft, T MobilePeople: Philipp HummDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
Scientific Conservation Inc. (SCI), which makes software that monitors energy use in commercial buildings, has raised $15.65 million in a second round of funding. This marks the latest in a string of companies focusing on opportunities in the mammoth commercial buildings market, which SCI estimates as a $5 billion opportunity.SCI&'s software tracks and diagnoses energy use and problems across a building&'s HVAC, refrigeration, lighting, and other systems. The latest funding round was led by Barry Schuler of the DFJ Growth Fund. It&'s rare to see energy efficiency succeed in residential markets, where savings are smaller and companies have to convince risk-averse utilities to try out new technologies. But commercial buildings are, by some accounts, responsible for 20 percent of all energy consumed in the U.S. &8212' and 30 percent of energy used by those buildings is wasted. Companies that can offer energy efficiency and cost savings to commercial buildings are a playing in a sector expected to get hot this year. Some of the hottest markets set to boom this year are geared toward commercial buildings &8212' lighting systems, building controls and energy efficiency, and players include Serious Materials, Schneider Electric and Siemens. Investors TIAA-CREF and Good Energies also started a fund last year to put $50 million in venture capital into building controls and energy efficiency.SCI, which won backing from GE in a round of GE&'s Ecoimagination contest last year, approaches building energy efficiency using a software-as-a-service product using predictive diagnostics and automation. SCI says its product canhelp cut annual energy costs by 15 to 25 percent by predicting energy use and automating energy management tasks. It can also seek out weaknesses in the system and streamline maintenance issues. The San Francisco-based company was founded in 2007 and has raised a total of $24.65 million' this round includes investment from DFJ Ventures and The Westly Group.[Image via Flickr/ricardodiaz11]Next Story: How many tablets will businesses buy in 2011 Try 10M (report) Previous Story: LivingSocial does another deal with Amazon.comPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: building controls, ecoimagination, energy efficiencyCompanies: DFJ, DFJ Growth Fund, DFJ Ventures, GE, Good Energies, Schneider Electric, SCI, Scientific Conservation, Serious Materials, The Westly Group, TIAA CREF Tags: building controls, ecoimagination, energy efficiencyCompanies: DFJ, DFJ Growth Fund, DFJ Ventures, GE, Good Energies, Schneider Electric, SCI, Scientific Conservation, Serious Materials, The Westly Group, TIAA CREFIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
Waze, makers of an innovative crowdsourced app that offers free driving directions, is on a roll. The company just announced that it has scored $25 million in a second round of funding.Waze says the funding will be used to &''expand corporate and marketing initiatives,&'' build up its core infrastructure, and increase its staff as the company moves its headquarters from Tel Aviv to Palo Alto. In an interview, the company told VentureBeat that its investors were particularly enthusiastic over the phenomenal engagement it&'s seeing from users. Waze just recently surpassed 2.2 million users &8212' up from a mere 500,000 in January. The company&'s app, which is available on iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile and Symbian phones, offers free turn-by-turn directions. Waze&'s claim to fame is the generous amount of live traffic data it has access to, which is powered completely by user contributions.Given its tremendous growth, Waze tells me that it will be spending quite a bit of time scaling its infrastructure. Everything on the platform is done in real-time, so the company can&'t afford to have any slowdowns as it attracts more users.Waze says its next big goal is to open up its platform, perhaps with some sort of API so that developers can take advantage of its data. Potentially, that would allow Google to take advantage of Waze&'s live traffic data in its Maps Navigation app on Android phones. The company tells me that it&'s also looking into bringing its application directly into cars that support apps, like those equipped with Ford&'s Sync technology (which is developed by Microsoft). Waze could make its way into cars as early as two years from now.The funding round was led by Blue Run Ventures and saw participation from other existing investors Magma Venture Partners and Vertex Venture Capital.
People search site MyLife has flown under the radar for the most part since the site debuted from the merging of Reunion.com and Wink in early 2009. Today, the company is releasing a number of statistics about its growth over the past year.MyLife is a full-fledged search engine which not only finds peoplea4"thanks to aggregated search across social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIn, and MySpacea4"but also helps visitors connect with them all on the same site. MyLife pulls information from public records and also allows users to subscribe to the search site to connect with others, track their searches and more.Founder and CEO Jeffrey Tinsley says the site is getting 26 million monthly unique visitors according to Omniture&'s statistics. comScore actually reports that the site saw half that traffic, or 12.7 million unique visitors in October. Tinsley says that MyLife has 41 million registered members and is adding 2.4 million U.S. monthly members monthly. The site currently lists 205 million U.S. records out of 1.2 billion people records worldwide. And in terms of revenue, Tinsely says that MyLife will see $60 million in revenue in 2010, and is expected to grow by 40 percent in 2011. While MyLife sees Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn as its competition, the site doesn&'t really have any social features beyond the ability to find and message people. That being said, people search is expected to be a $10.8 billion business by 2013, according to a recent Forrestor study, so MyLife seems to have hit a possible goldminein terms of revenue.

The newest motion-control systems from Microsoft and Sony are starting to be in short supply as the busy holiday shopping season approaches.Microsoft said today that some stores are selling out of its Kinect motion-control system, which launched on Nov. 4 and sold 1 million units in its first 10 days. David Dennis, a spokesman, said the company is working hard to keep up with demand and has increased manufacturing of the systems, which sell for $149 and work with an Xbox 360 game console. The company has also started expediting shipments via air cargo to increase its supplies.Last week, Microsoft game chief Don Mattrick warned consumers that they should get their Kinect units by Thanksgiving. He also predicted that Microsoft would sell more than 5 million Kinect systems by the end of the year. (See our review of Kinect here).Meanwhile, Sony&'s Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing in the U.S., said in an interview that stores are running low on supplies of the PlayStation Move controller, a motion-sensing wand that you can use with the PlayStation 3 game console. There are plenty of bundles available for $299 that package Move with a PS 3. But Dille acknowledged that Sony misjudged the demand for the stand-alone Move controllers. He anticipates that supplies will be short through January for the Move controllers in all major territories.Overall, video game sales are down 8 percent year to date. Last year, consumers waited longer to make purchases. Sales in October were mixed, but Dille said that there are lots of high-demand items in the video game aisles of stores, including Move, Kinect and Call of Duty: Black Ops.&''That bodes well for the holiday selling season,&'' Dille said. &''We have a catch-up problem in all three territories that will last until January or February.&''Sony hasn&'t said how many units of the Move, which went on sale in September, have sold through at retail. The company said that it shipped 1 million units to stores in its first month. (See our Move review here). Tonight, Sony&'s big exclusive game of the season, Gran Turismo 5, goes on sale. The racing game is the biggest title in part because Sony&'s other big game, Little Big Planet 2, has been delayed.Nintendo says it expects to have plenty of hardware for the holidays. Sales of the Wii and DS have slowed down this year after a torrid couple of years. I suspect that Kinect will be the winner of the season by a wide margin. But it&'s going to have to set the world on fire to hit 5 million units sold.Next Story: Sequoia Capital is &''at your service&'' for ambitious startups Previous Story: Here come the sales: Fans buy 2M Beatles songs on iTunesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Kinect, Playstation MoveCompanies: Microsoft, nintendo, SonyPeople: Peter Dille Tags: Kinect, Playstation MoveCompanies: Microsoft, nintendo, SonyPeople: Peter DilleDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Twitter has just released an update to their Android app into the Market. So what&'s new Well, it&'s faster for one thing. But perhaps more significantly, it now looks anda4sfunctionsa4smuch like their popular iPhone app.Specifically, the Pull-to-Refresh and Swipe-to-Reveal features that have been standard on the iPhone version since it was still known as &''Tweetie&'' have made their way to the Android version. There is also a new Tweets detail page that yes, looks exactly like the iPhone version.Twitter promises that this latest version should be much faster. The company says they&'re trying a new way of drawing timelines that should make scrolling smoother. The company previously worked with the Android team at Google to ship the original version of the app. It was good, but not as good as Twitter for iPhone.a4sNow they&'ve taken the thing entirely in-house we&'ve confirmed (it has been in-house since version 1.0.3 a4" this is version 1.0.5). And yes, it&'s substantially better.Of course, it&'s still not quite iPhone-good. Pull-to-Refresh, for example, fails to bounce as you might expect on the iPhone. And Swipe-to-Reveal feels a little stale. But that&'s most likely a lack of Android polish, not Twitter polish.Oh, and you can finally quote a Tweet (on top of retweet it).
Twitter&'s Robin Sloan took the stage today at NewTeeVee conference to talk about TV and Twitter. He began his talk with the bold statement that a good percentage of the 90m million tweets per day are television related (he wouldn&'t say exactly how many), with Twitter peak times happening during real-time broadcast TV prime time. &''Twitter is the newa4sEPG,&'' he proclaimed.Sloan elaborates on this for TechCrunch, &''We&'ve been talking about &8216'interactive TV&' for 20 years, waiting for the magic box or platform to finally emerge. But maybe Twitter is actually the platform for interactive TV It&'s simple, increasingly ubiquitous, works on any platform&8230' and everybody&'s already using it to talk about TV.&''Sloan also provided examples of media brands using Twitter to moderate the TV experience, separating Twitter integration into three categories.Synchronous show tweeting Sloan brought up the Discovery Channel and the Twitter integration around their show LIFE @lifeondiscovery, where Discovery prompted people to tweet out their own discoveries using the mydiscovery hashtag, as an example of &''synchronous show tweeting.&'' Sloan also counts stuff like the the cast of Jersey Shore tweeting during new Jersey Shore episodes in this category, which basically includes any Twitter use that provides a running commentary track for TV shows.Social viewingShows like BET&'sa4s@106andpark &''puppeteer the experience of viewing&'' like no one else, Sloan said. He gave the show props onstage for curating a space for all users watching live to tweet a4sand then actually integrating the viewer tweets it commandeered (under hashtags like neverthat) into the show. This kind of social viewing makes people feel like &''they&'re not alone on the couch eating a bag of Cheetos.&''New kinds of contentTwitter is also changing what we consider content. Sloan brought up the example of how MTV hired TJ (Twitter Jockey) Gabi Gregg to perform &''conversation coreography&'' or steer the Twitter conversation around this year&'s VMA Awards using hashtags like whenbiebermetgaga. Aside from the 2.3 million tweets total under the a4sVMA hashtag, this year&'s deeply Twitter integrated VMAs raked in over 11 million viewers, MTV&'s largest a4sVMA viewership numbers since 2002.Since what&'s happening on television is such a crucial part of collective conversation and therefore Twitter, it difficult to gauge exactly how the full potential of Twitter&'s relationship with TV will play out. There were even rumors of Twitter starting its own TV show at some point. Says Sloan about the microblogging service&'s future, &''It&'s not just supplementing content, it&'s changing it. It&'s taking all this stuff and piping it back in.&''Image: Just JaredCrunchBase InformationTwitterInformation provided by CrunchBaseTipTweet

0 Vote(s)

Get your popcorn. I lost track of who&'s turn it is, but Facebook just slapped Google right back. Background:Google To Facebook: You Cana4a4t Import Our User Data Without ReciprocityData Protectionism Begins In EarnestFacebook Finds A New Way To Liberate Your Gmail Contact DataGooglea4a4s Response To Facebooka4a4s Response To Googlea4a4s Facebook API BanOr, if you don&'t want to read all that: Google blocked Facebook API access to download Google contacts. Facebook hacked around it, and Google issed a statement that they were &''disappointed.&'' Facebook has been silent the whole time.Until now.Facebook platform engineer Mike Vernal left a comment on our last post, and it&'s a doozy:This is Mike Vernal &8212' I work on engineering team for Facebook Platform.Less than a year ago, Google issued this statement when they blocked their own users&' ability to export their contacts from Orkut to Facebook: &''Mass exportation of email is not standard on most social networks &8212' when a user friends someone they don&'t then expect that person to be easily able to send that contact information to a third party along with hundreds of other addresses with just one click.&''This functionality was not a problem when Orkut was winning in Brazil and India but, as soon as people starting preferring Facebook to Google products, Google changed its stance. First, Google simply broke their export feature and hoped people wouldn&'t notice. People did notice (http://techcrunch.com/2009/10/01/google-has-a-plan-to-stop-the-mass-exodus-from-orkut-no-friend-exports-for-you). Then, when they got called out onit, they changed their policy completely. Today, the same thing is happening with Gmail.Openness doesn&'t mean being open when its convenient for you. On Google&'s website, dataliberation.org, Eric Schmidt says, &''How do you be big without being evil We don&'t trap end users. So if you don&'t like Google, if for whatever reason we do a bad job for you, we make it easy for you to move to our competitor.&'' How does limiting user choice honor this commitmentOur policy has been consistent. The most important principle for Facebook is that every person owns and controls her information. Each person owns her friends list, but not her friends&' information. A person has no more right to mass export all of her friends&' private email addresses than she does to mass export all of her friends&' private photo albums.Email is different from social networking because in an email application, each person maintains and owns their own address book, whereas in a social network your friends maintain their information and you just maintain a list of friends. Because of this, we think it makes sense for email applications to export email addresses and for social networks to export friend lists.Facebook Platform and the Graph API enable everyone to bring their own information to millions of sites and applications, including even Google&'s YouTube. It&'s still a work in progress and there&'s more to do, but in practice Facebook Platform is the largest scale initiative to help you move your information between services that exists today. We strongly hope that Google turns back on their API and doesn&'t come up with yet another excuse to prevent their users from leaving Google products to use ones they like better instead.Vernal says Facebook&'s policy &''has been consistent,&'' which is exactly the opposite of the truth. And playing the Orkut card That&'s just low. But more on this later. Until then: CrunchBase InformationGoogleFacebookInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Last year, we wrote about Green Thing''s Glove Love, which gathers up stray gloves, matches them with other lost-and-found singles and sells the pairs to new owners. This week, Green Thing launched SAVED, a product line that breathes new life into back-of-the-closet t-shirts. SAVED takes worn and forgotten t-shirts, washes them and adds the word ''saved'' in handstitched lettering. Each shirt''s tag shows the name of the person who donated it and why it had to be saved (from bad taste, from weight gain, from neglect), as well as the name of the person who did the washing and sewing. The newly desirable shirt is then sold for GBP 20. Proceeds go to Green Thing, a not-for-profit organisation that aims to inspire people to lead greener lives. Anyone with t-shirts they no longer wear a4" which, let''s be honest, is everyone a4" can send them over to Green Thing to be saved. Celebrating the new product''s launch, shirts for sale include several from the closets of Imogen Heap, Zandra Rhodes and other British celebrities. Even better, customers receive their shirts in reusable packaging that comes with a free return label, letting them continue the upcycling cycle by sending in a t-shirt of their own. SAVED is part of what Green Thing calls All-Consuming, defined as ''the art of wasting nothing and using up everything.'' In addition to those environmental benefits, the added appeal for consumers is the background story a4" one worth repeating.
We&'ve gotten word that niche ad network Betawave has as of today run out of money to continue operations. Betawave integrated ads and products for a portfolio of sites primarily in the gaming, mom and teen verticals. Some publishers have not been paid in 6 months and were only hanging on to see if Betawave would merge with Realgirlsmedia, a deal which apparently fell though according to a source.a4sBetawave confirmed to TechCrunch that they are now in discussions to sell the business with the following statement.&''We had a great run, we are really proud of our people. We were severely affected by the economic downturn last year, which left us in a very difficult position this year. a4sWe managed to make it through most of the year, but weren&'t able to achieve profitability. Some of our assets and our intellectual property will be acquired by third parties and we think many of our employees will get picked up as well. a4sIn the end, we know we made an impact by the number of different companies espousing many of our philosophies.&''We last wrote about Betawave back when they were child-oriented media company GoFish anda4shad just raised 22.5 million in financing.
