Perhaps owing to the highly caffeinated culture here, some people who snapped up the &quot;Offer of the Day&quot; raced over to Floyd's Coffee Shop only to discover that the coupon can't be redeemed until tomorrow. &quot;Within 10 minutes of the deal going live, someone was in the shop to redeem the offer,&quot; Jack Inglis, co-owner of Floyd's, said in a phone interview.On the cash register at Floyd's in southeast Portland, a sticky note spelled it out for the daily-deals crowd eager to cash in: &quot;Google Offer Starts TMR!&quot;Before noon, more than half of the 2,000 coupons had been purchased, with the window to purchase the deal expiring at midnight tonight. Users who sign up will get daily-deal announcements via e-mail. A Google representative said today that the company will offer one deal each weekday and one deal every weekend. Upcoming offers will feature the venerable Powell's Books and the arcade Ground Kontrol.Google chose Portland as the launch site because it &quot;has a large number of local businesses and an active community,&quot; the representative said. The San Francisco Bay Area and New York are next on the list for Google Offers, though the company said it isn't announcing future dates yet.Late last year, Google reportedly tried to buy Groupon, the leader in the daily-deals market, for between $5 billion and $6 billion, but Groupon decided to remain independent. Google confirmed about a month later that it was putting together its own daily-deals service.&quot;Google has a reach very few other companies can claim,&quot; Inglis said, explaining why Google Offers appealed to him. He and his wife, Cris Chapman, started Floyd's about seven years ago. It's a small but growing business and they don't advertise. &quot;Getting our name out there as a brand is my long-term goal,&quot; Inglis said.He said Google asked that they not disclose the terms of their agreement, but he said the terms are competitive with those of similar services.The one hitch today with the inaugural &quot;Offer of the Day&quot; seemed to be timing. People are misreading the offer, thinking it needs to be redeemed today, Inglis said. In fact, the soonest it can be redeemed is tomorrow, though the deal is good for a year.Before today, Inglis probably would have said it's not likely people would go out of their way to go to a particular coffee shop.&quot;I think I'm about to be proved wrong,&quot; he said.Eric Vaterlaus, a computer programmer, went to Floyd's in southeast Portland for the first time today. He works about 14 blocks away and tried to redeem his Google Offers coupon at lunchtime. Vaterlaus said it was a breeze to buy the deal online but noted that the coupon only has the expiration date. He suggested that Google include the deal's start date on the coupon like it does on the Google Offers page. <description><![CDATA[If Research in Motion's BlackBerry PlayBook is to succeed at market the way the company hopes, there are a few engineering hurdles to overcome. The most significant, according to Kaufman Bros. analyst Shaw Wu, is the device's relatively poor battery life.Sources tell him the tablet currently lasts just a few hours per charge, compared with rivals like Samsung's Galaxy Tab, which lasts about six, and theiPad, which lasts upward of 10. If true, that's an untenable situation for RIM, which really needs to hit the mark with the PlayBook, and it may cause a delay of the launch--if only for a bit.&quot;From our understanding, this [is] likely why RIMM pushed out its launch to the May 2011 quarter,&quot; Wu writes. &quot;Keep in mind that QNX (the OS on which PlayBook runs) wasn't originally designed for mobile environments but rather for devices like network equipment and automobiles where battery life isn't as much a constraint.&quot; In other words, as promising as plugging QNX into a tablet form factor with a dual-core processor and a gig of RAM sounds, it's proving to be a bit of a challenge. The updated operating system features an improved user interface, Internet calling with the help of SIP, the ability to switch over to voice mode to fix text errors, and more.As important as it might be that Gingerbread is coming to the Nexus One, other Android phone owners will likely be forced to wait much longer. With each new Android version launch, it takes quite a while to get the latest version of the OS on devices. <description><![CDATA[December 17, also known as Free Shipping Day because it&amp;'s the last day you could get free shipping for pre-Christmas online purchases, was the busiest spending day in online history.Market researcher comScore said that Free Shipping Day generated $942 million in online sales, up 61 percent from a year earlier. The numbers so far show that this season has been the busiest ever for online retail sales. That&amp;'s both a good leading economic indicator for the overall economy, as well as an indicator that online sales are taking market share away from physical retail stores. It shows that online retailers are figuring out how to promote their goods so that consumers make their last minute purchases online instead of in crowded malls.Online shopping has been strong all season. Free Shipping Day (when 1,500 online merchants offered free shipping) was eclipsed by Cyber Monday (Nov. 29), which saw sales of $1.028 billion, and by Green Monday (Dec. 13), at $954 million. Year to date, the first 47 days of the November-December shopping season generated $27.46 billion in sales, up 12 percent from a year ago. Cyber Monday is now expected to become the busiest shopping day of the year' that&amp;'s a first for the first Monday after Thanksgiving.In the most recent week, online sales were $5.50 billion, up 14 percent from a year ago. Four days this season have surpassed $900 million in sales. Free Shipping Day occurs later in the season each year as retailers get more efficient at shipping goods. At least half the transactions of the past five weeks have used free shipping, said Gian Falconi, chairman of comScore. Free shipping has enabled consumers to shop longer and get better deals before they finally decide to place online orders.For the season, computer hardware is the top-growth category, with sales up 25 percent compared to last year. Purchases of Apple iPads, eBook readers, and laptops drove much of the growth. Low pricing on flat-panel TVs continues to drive sales in consumer electronics, which grew 22 percent. It provides a cornucopia of new ways to communicate creatively with your friends. It lets you send a basic text message to your friends, but you can  customize your text in different ways, including with different color,  fonts and sizes &amp;8212' and then add attachments of up to nine different  forms of media &amp;8212' from photos to videos, maps, music and  audio files.  And thata4a4s just the beginning.It remains to be seen, however, if users will want to use all of the features, or if theya4a4ll fall back to using the more basic chat features that are already offered by competitors PingChat and Kik.HighNote launches tonight with iPhone and Android versions.HighNote joins a number of other next-generation mobile messaging apps, from Kik on the more Spartan side, to WhatsApp and PingChat, which also offer more multi-media chat features. Then there&amp;'s GroupMe, which focuses on group messaging, and Beluga, which has gotten attention for mixing both group and media features. It lets you share things like photos and your location, and also maps the location of your friends.All of these apps are in a race to fill what their founders see is a gaping void in smartphone communication. SMS is hugely popular, but at the same time ita4a4s outmoded: It doesna4a4t allow users to use the full power of their phones.On the other hand, services like Facebook, where users are spending more time, are too public or too complex to enable quick and creative chat while on the go.The builders of these new apps are hoping to gain profile at the upcoming SXSW conference in Austin &amp;8212' the place where Twitter and FourSquare first ignited in a big way.Like many of these players, Highnote, based in San Francisco, runs its app on Internet Protocol and not on top of paid chat &amp;8212' making it free for users.Marc Barach, chief executive, told me he hopes HighNotea4a4s music sharing features will be popular, because therea4a4s still no easy way to do that. HighNote integrates with iTunes music and video &amp;8212' letting you choose and play popular rated music from your app dashboard, for example.
