Microsoft's Bing just added Twitter feeds to its news pages, giving readers the ability to quickly scan the latest buzz about the biggest events. When Web surfers search Bing News for a story, tweets now show up in a scrolling column on the right side of the page under the heading "Public updates." So news links today about Elizabeth Taylor's funeral were accompanied by brief tributes from fans as well as promotions from publications linking to articles about the actress.Bing News Twitter feed, circled(Credit:Screenshot by CNET)The idea behind the new Twitter feed is to give readers yet another source of information. "As we've seen with the tragedy in Japan or political turmoil in the Middle East, real people are relaying timely and compelling items not captured by traditional outlets," Betsy Aoki, a Bing senior program manager, writes on the Bing blog. The Twitter feed adds a bit of clutter to a page that also includes related video to the news topic as well as links to people in the news related to the search. But it also differentiates Bing News from its much larger rival, Google News.Microsoft also expanded its "Liked Results" feature, highlighting links that Facebook friends have "liked" directly in Bing's search results. Users have to be signed into both Facebook and Bing for the feature to work.

0 Vote(s)

Retail giant Target plans to roll out Microsoft's virtualization technology to its 1,700 stores, giving the software giant's enterprise cloud computing efforts a new boost. Microsoft announced a new deal in which Target will manage such operations as inventory, point-of-sale, and supply-chain management remotely with Microsoft's Hyper-v software. In addition, Target will roll out 15,000 virtual machines using the technology across the country.VMware, run by former Microsoft senior executive Paul Maritz, dominates the software virtualization business. But Microsoft has been working to cut into that lead with acquisitions and new software. The market offers one of the best opportunities for growth in enterprise computing as companies push to reduce costs by shedding hardware and running systems over Internet infrastructure.TargetThat's why Target is deploying the new Microsoft technology. It's being used to run cash registers and the computers used to guide restocking inventory. The retailer, which manages all of its store technology remotely, says it will reduce the number of servers in its stores from seven to two, eliminating 8,000 servers in the process. That cuts not only the cost of replacing the hardware, but also the expense of maintaining it and even the price of the electricity used to power it. Microsoft doesn't believe it will reduce its server software revenue. "Virtualization can lead to consolidation of hardware resources, but shouldn't negatively impact software licensing," says David Greschler, Microsoft's director of virtualization and cloud strategy for its server and tools business. The Target deal is a feather for virtualization efforts at Microsoft, which wants to prove its software can handle large, mission-critical applications. "Particularly as organizations are contemplating cloud computing, they find comfort in knowing the Microsoft platform can virtualize and manage all kinds of applications--Microsoft's, a third party's or homegrown--on a massive scale," Brad Anderson, corporate vice president of the company's management and security division, said in a press release.Hoping to grow its virtualization business, Microsoft has built tools into its Windows Server software to make it easier to run its Hyper-v technology. And while it still trails VMware, it's picked up customers in recent years including Del Monte Foods and Costco Wholesale. That said, Target has been a longtime customer of Microsoft's Virtual Server software, so upgrading to Hyper-v was the logical move, says Brett Waldman, senior research analyst at IDC. "Landing a large, named client like Target is always a big deal, but it does not seem like VMware was ever seriously considered in this case study," Waldman says. What's more, Hyper-v is included in the license for Windows Server 2008 R2, which Target is using, making moving to VMware even more of an expense.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Donald Bell/CNET)Gaming could be making its way to the Apple TV.According to Engadget, which received iOS 4.3 beta 3 code snippets from an anonymous tipster, two strings of code, dubbed "com.apple.appletv.play.live.thunder" and "com.apple.appletv.play.archive.thunder," provide the best evidence that video game support could be coming to the Apple TV. Other areas of the code mentioned "ATVThunder" and "ATVGames," Engadget is reporting. All told, "several references" to gaming on the Apple TV were found throughout the code that Engadget obtained.Apple released an updated version of its set-top box in September. The new Apple TV, which the company says isn't the "hobby" that its predecessor was, lacks internal storage and requires users to stream multimedia content to the device. It includes access to iTunes video content, as well as Netflix and Flickr. According to Apple, it hit the 1 million units sold mark in December.Prior to the launch of the latest Apple TV, some industry watchers thought that the device would feature some kind of gaming component. In 2009, an Apple patent was discovered that seemed to indicate that the company was thinking about allowing Apple TV owners to play casual games on the device. But companies file a slew of patents, and many of the products described in those filings never make it to store shelves. The discovery by Engadget's tipster is by no means a smoking gun. And as with any other Apple product, rumors about the Apple TV's upcoming features should be taken with a grain of salt. But if Apple is looking for other ways to improve its set-top box, games might just be the next logical space for the company to jump on. If that happens, just don't expectXbox 360- orPlayStation 3-quality games. The Apple TV lacks the graphical prowess to match those consoles, which means it would probably only accommodate casual, online games.Apple did not immediately respond to request for comment.

0 Vote(s)

Motorola Xoom(Credit:Motorola)The Xoom, Motorola's first foray intotablet market, will make an appearance at Best Buy on February 17, according to a report. The 10.1-inch tablet is expected to be one of the first tablets from a top-tier supplier to giveApple's iPad a run for its money. The Xoom will come with Google's Android Honeycomb operating system for tablets, a dual-core processor, a high-resolution (1,280x800) display, dual cameras, and the Verizon 3G (and soon-to-come 4G) network. Apple is expected to respond in kind with a second-gen iPad, reportedly packing features like a dual-core processor, improved graphics silicon, dual cameras, and a higher-resolution display (note that the last two rumored features have been called into question). On the Xoom, pricing is reported to be $800, though $699 has also been cited as a price. The device is also said to have 32GB of onboard flash storage. The current iPad varies in price, based on configuration--the 32GB model with 3G goes for $729 in Apple's online store.Via Engadget.

0 Vote(s)

Will HTC announce an Android phone without buttons at Mobile World Congress(Credit:PocketNow)The first images of HTC's next handsets have made their way online ahead of next month's Mobile World Congress. Various leaks obtained by PocketNow reveal slightly varied takes on current Android designs. One image, which could be of the flagship model, closely resembles the Desire HD unveiled last September. A front-facing camera sits above what appears to be a screen measuring 4 inches diagonally. A second, more compact, device features a traditional trackball and a 3.2-inch screen. The top right corner has what could be construed as a front-facing camera or ambient light sensor. Bearing a striking resemblance to last year's Nexus One, this miniature phone could be a possible successor to the Wildfire. If there is anything remarkable about the third phone, it's that it doesn't feature any buttons. Shown in both HTC and Verizon branding, there is little else known about the device at this point except that the lack of buttons could mean that Android 3.0 is onboard. While Honeycomb may usher in an era of buttonlesstablets like the Motorola Xoom, I can't imagine phones running this new version of Android just yet. Then again, companies have to do something to stay fresh, rightAlthough any of these could be based on HTC's Brew platform (Smart), the general consensus among Android blogs is that they will run the Google platform. The buttons across the bottom of the two models align with those on previously released Android smart phones. Assuming these are real devices, I'd look for them to arrive in the wild at some point over the next few weeks. If there's one thing I've learned over the last few years it's that new Android phones love to steal the spotlight. With less than a month to go before Mobile World Congress, I'd be willing to bet that these are actual phones being readied for an announcement.Maybe it's just me, but I was hoping for something a little sexier out of HTC. Given that we can't tell what these look like from other angles, I still find them somewhat uninspired. Don't get me wrong, I really love the feel of the Evo Shift 4G and the Thunderbolt. Perhaps the final products will be more in line with the stuff in my dreams.

0 Vote(s)
