HTC&39's recent decision is a welcome one to be sure.(Credit:HTC Facebook)The hacking and modding community scored a small victory this week when HTC announced it would no longer be locking bootloaders on its handsets. In other words, it will be easier to unlock future HTC phones and, hopefully, tablets. Once a phone is unlocked, it is possible for the end users to load any custom ROM or experience they'd like. What's more, while many of HTC's products are loaded with Sense UI and carrier-branded applications, modders often load a clean and clutter-free version ofAndroid. HTC's CEO Peter Chou delivered the news via a Facebook post late Thursday night, thanking the company's users for their "passion, support, and patience" in the matter. Earlier in the week, HTC indicated that it was looking into the idea of unlocking bootloaders and promised a followup statement in short order. A few hundred comments and "likes" later, HTC is one of the most popular kids in the smartphone school today. There's no indication as to when the new bootloader policy will go into effect, nor which handsets will be affected. HTC has a few new releases on the horizon in the form of the Evo 3D and Sensation. And with only a few weeks to go before the models are expected, it would be safe to say that the old system will still be in placeYet, that could change with a software update down the road. AndroidPolice has gathered a few e-mail responses confirming HTC's plans to include the Evo 3D in the new bootloader policy, either at launch or with an over-the-air (OTA) update. I'd be interested to learn how far back, if at all, HTC will go in making it easy to unlock its phones. To say that this news only affects a very vocal minority of users would be an understatement. The average Android owner doesn't know anything other than what comes out of the box and wouldn't be able to discern the bootloaders if given the chance. After all, the most popular custom ROM for Android users is CyanogenMod, boasting about 300,000 active installs. That's not a tiny number, but it's nothing when compared to the more than 400,000 new Android activations happening every day. Regardless of how many people actually benefit from such a change, I am a fan of HTC's new stance. By simply giving customers the choice to tinker a bit with their phones, it adds to the allure of Android. Though many consumers tailor their devices with wallpapers and ringtones, others like to tweak everything, right down to the bootup animations. Another common reason to root a handset is the ability to wipe preloaded applications and services. Whereas most users will be unaffected by HTC's decision, others applaud its effort.I'd love to hear from you readers on this subject' have you rooted your handset What phone are you using and why did you choose it Does this new policy have you reconsidering HTC for future devices

0 Vote(s)

The multitasking screen on this iPhone differs from what Apple currently offers, and has been used since iOS 4&39's release.(Credit:Tinhte/YouTube)Videos demonstrating what appears to be an early development version of a whiteiPhone 4, as well as a version of iOS with multitasking and search features that differ from existing models, has cropped up on the Web today, showing hints of directions Apple could have taken, or might yet take with its features. The two videos come from Vietnamese site Tinhte, which is the same outlet that got a hold of the iPhone 4 ahead of its official announcement. Engadget picked up on them this morning, noting that the phone is running a build of iOS aimed at testing the hardware. The build itself is labeled 4.0, dating the software by about a year. Of special interest is what's inside. The phone sports 64GB of internal memory. 32GB more than what can currently be had with the top of the line iPhone. There are also subtle changes to the way the phone's software handles features that can be found in existing builds of iOS 4, specifically multitasking, folder organization and search.Instead of putting open apps in a bottom shelf that pops up, the software in the video provides previews of applications in an identical fashion to howSafari displays open tabs. The phone's Spotlight search is also thrown into this screen, presumably to consolidate space. In iOS' current implementation, starting a search can be done by going one swipe left of the first home screen. The phone also depicts folder management in a different fashion from what iOS 4 shipped with, opting to put applications in folders that would pop up, much like how it's done in Google's Android OS. However the basic movement of holding items to get them to wobble, then dragging them into the folder appears to remain unchanged. Multitasking changes:A look at the settings and making phone calls:Other small touches include a menu for Facebook, which was uncovered by 9to5mac. Presumably this would be to add social features to the phone, or be a settings menu for a bundled Facebook application. Apple has said it will be showing off "the future of iOS" at its Worldwide Developers Conference in early June. In the interim, credible reports have pointed to the company finally releasing a white version of the iPhone 4 in the next few weeks, some 10 months after it was originally slated to debut. Update at 11:30 a.m. PT: Several commenters have pointed out the multitasking interface in the videos bears a resemblance to Multifl0w, a multitasking tool with thumbnails that's available for jailbroken iOS devices. The behavioral and stylistic differences between that application, and system in the video suggest the two are not the same.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)Does it have Samsung's signature high-polish glossy body Of course! But the Samsung Gem, an Android 2.2 Froyo smartphone for U.S. Cellular, also has some style all its own. With its swooping lines and repeated pentagonal, superhero-esque accent, it doesn't look like just any other Android phone.Related links&149' Read our T-Mobile G2 review&149' Alltel also has the Samsung Gem&149' See other Samsung phonesWe're pleased that Samsung left its custom TouchWiz interface off this model, giving us the default (some would call it "pure") Android experience. The specs are typical for a budget Android handset, which amounts to good value at only $30 for the smartphone. Since many messaging phones cost more than that and bring you less, the Gem joins the LG Optimus U as a killer deal for U.S. Cellular subscribers (compare the phones).Watch the hands-on video review, see photos, and read details about call quality and more in our full Samsung Gem review!

0 Vote(s)

Rovigo, Italy, is a CLEAR (City and Local Environmental Accounting Reporting) town whose motto is &34'the city of change.&34'As of November, the Italian city of Rovigo is home to the largest photovoltaic (PV) solar plant in Europe, SunEdison announced today.SunEdison, a subsidiary of the silicon wafer manufacturer MEMC Electronic Materials, is right, but even it admits the claim comes with a qualifier by calling the 70-megawatt plant "Europe's largest single site solar farm."For there are many large-scale solar projects both in existence and under way in Europe involving more megawatts, but very often those announcements of super-megawatt projects are really a series of smaller, interconnected PV farms spread out over a region.Brandenburg, Germany's Finsterwalde Solar Park, for example, is considered by many to be Europe's largest solar PV plant. But it is technically a series of three interconnected plants referred to as Finsterwalde I, Finsterwalde II, and Finsterwalde III. Together they make up 81 megawatts. While Spain is also known for its aggressive adoption of solar power, the country contains mostly solar farms in the 10- to 30-megawatt range. Olmedilla Photovoltaic Park, currently Spain's largest solar PV farm, is 60 megawatts.Rovigo, Italy's 70-megawatt PV plant is now the largest single site PV solar plant in Europe.(Credit:SunEdison)So it would be fair to say that SunEdison has developed the largest PV solar plant in Europe contained in one single location. And that location is Rovigo, Italy, a small town located roughly between Bologna and Venice, which prides itself on being "the city of change."Perhaps it should also be known as the city that quickly changes. The solar park got final approval from the Italian government in March, and was completed and connected to the Italian electric grid as of this November. The 70-megawatt PV plant is expected to generate enough electricity annually to power 17,150 homes.Maybe the fast-tracked project had to do with the competence of SunEdison, its recent financing progress as a company, or Isolux Corsan, the Spanish construction company SunEdison commissioned to built the PV solar farm. But it's worth noting that the project also had the complete backing of the Italian government from federal through local levels. Rovigo, Italy, also happens to be a member of CLEAR (City and Local Environmental Accounting Reporting). It's an EU initiative in which member towns agree to implement environmental accounting and sustainability plans as part of standard government budget operations.

0 Vote(s)
