(Credit:U.S. Department of Energy)Despite rising prices at the pump, many consumers are still reluctant to purchase vehicles with alternative power trains because of cost and misunderstandings about the new technologies available. That's according to the J.D. Power and Associates "2011 U.S. Green Automotive Study," whose primary findings were released today. The J.D. Power and Associates study was conducted in February and included interviews with over 4,000 U.S. consumers planning to buy a new vehicle within one to five years. It estimates that alternative vehicles will make up less than 10 percent of the market by 2016 despite the plethora of models expected to become available in the coming years. The study found that attitudes toward the adoption of alternative power train vehicles, which includes plug-in electric, plug-in hybrid, hybrid, and clean diesel engines, were mainly dependent on affordability. Over 75 percent of those consumers surveyed said the main reason they would consider an alternative vehiclecar is to save on fuel. But consumers were not willing to pay a premium to be green unless it resulted in a cost benefit to them personally in the form of significant fuel savings, according to the report. "While consumers often cite saving money on fuel as the primary benefit of owning an alternative power train vehicle, the reality for many is that the initial cost of these vehicles is too high, even as fuel prices in the United States approach record levels," said the report.Related links&149' EV pilot programs show sticking points&149' Google, DOE building definitive electric-car map&149' Practicality may hinder electric-vehicle salesThat result was not so unusual. However, the J.D. Power and Associates study also found that many consumers were misinformed about technology, leading them to unwarranted negative perceptions of the new types of cars. The most amusing example of this to tech-savvy readers may be the results concerning cars with diesel engines. Many of the consumers interviewed said that diesel cars spew "dirty" emissions and are harmful to the environment. These people seemed unaware of the significant changes made in diesel technology, or its fuel efficiency, over the last 20 years, according to the report."Furthermore, negative perceptions of older diesel-powered vehicles continue to affect perceptions of clean diesel vehicles, as concerns about emissions and exhaust odor are mentioned frequently," said the report.Plug-in electric vehicles were the least considered vehicle among the consumers surveyed. The two most popular reasons cited for this were concerns over the limited driving range and a lack of available public charging stations. This last piece of information is significant in view of a recent study from Accenture that found a lack of use of pubic charging stations in electric-vehicle pilot programs. It's unclear whether that lack of use is simply due to governments getting infrastructure in place ahead of demand, or other factors. But the Accenture report warned that the lack of use could lead to a vicious cycle in which more charging stations are not installed, and consumers deterred from buying electric vehicles because of it.J.D. Power and Associates predicts that the U.S. market will go from 31 hybrid and electric-vehicle models available in 2009 to 159 models available by the end of 2016.With that fact in mind, the report warned, the U.S. government and companies in the U.S. market will need to make a concerted effort to bring down pricing and better educate the public on the technology if it expects these new alternative power train models to be purchased or leased. The Department of Energy is already making an effort to improve public education about alternative-fuel stations. It offers a public Alternative Fueling Station Locator tool on its Web site, and announced earlier this month it is collaborating with Google to construct a definitive map of available electric-vehicle charging stations.

0 Vote(s)

Inside of Google's newest smartphone is a lot of solid, though fairly standard-issue hardware. One item on the outside of the phone raises a few eyebrows, however. The Google Nexus S&39' battery is &39'extremely easy&39' to remove, according to iFixit.(Credit:iFixit)Google's spanking-new smartphone--made by Samsung and available at Best Buy--packs widely used components like a SanDisk 16GB NAND flash module and a baseband processor--used for 3G--from Infineon, according to teardown virtuoso iFixit. (Note that Intel is in the process of acquiring Infineon's wireless business unit so that would technically put Intel inside the phone.) iFixit CEO Kyle Wiens, however, takes Google/Samsung to task for a feature he believes could be construed as a little misleading. "We feel the phone's curved glass is more of a gimmick than anything else," Wiens wrote in a note sent out Thursday. "Our teardown reveals that only the glass itself is curved, but that the LCD and touch screen are just as flat as any phone's. Although Google/Samsung technically doesn't lie on their site--they clearly mention a curved glass panel, not curved LCD--we still find their 'Contour Display' name a bit misleading," according to Wiens. (A CNET Review also cited this feature as a bit gimmicky.) Other highlights from iFixit: Display: The Super AMOLED (Active-Matrix Organic Light-Emitting Diode) display eliminates the digitizer and integrates the capacitive touch sensors into the display though the display itself is as "flat as a board, just as any other phone on the market," according to iFixit. Processor: a S5PC110A01 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird Processor based on an ARM design. 1GHz processors have become the norm for high-end smartphones, though higher-speed dual-core processors are expected next year. Memory: Main system memory is supplied by Samsung, while the flash memory for storage is from SanDisk. The SanDisk flash uses multi-level-cell, or MLC, technology. MLC allows flash chipmakers to increase data density at a lower cost. 3G: An Infineon 8824 XG616 X-Gold baseband processor and a Skyworks SKY77529 Tx Front-End Module for Dual-Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE. Audio: a Wolfson Microelectronics WM8994 ultra-low power audio codec. Battery: a 1500 mAh, 3.7 V, 5.55 Watt-hour Lithium ion cell provides up to 6.7 hours of talk time on a 3G network, and up to 14 hours on a 2G network. "That's slightly higher than the 1400 mAh and 1420 mAh battery ratings of theNexus One andiPhone 4, respectively," according to iFixit. And a heads up for AT&T customers. "Just a quick reminder that the Nexus S does not support the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz HSPA frequency bands required for 3G mobile data [on AT&T's network]," according to iFixit.

0 Vote(s)

We are all ducks, meekly sitting while those who have the hacking skills infiltrate our mind's eyes, aka our laptops. It seems, sadly, that among the latest victims of boys riding Trojan horses are acclaimed worldwide singing personality Lady Gaga, as well as other notable performing stallions, such as Justin Timberlake.According to the Telegraph, Lady Gaga and more than 50 other fine icons of our cultured times have suffered hacking at the hands of two Germans lads who desired access to their unreleased songs and their unreleasable intimate photographs.German prosecutors claim that among the hackers' haul was a picture of the singer Kesha in a state of considerable nudity, and, simultaneously, considerable pleasure. Indeed, the prosecutors say that instead of attempting to sell this image to an unscrupulously enterprising Web site, the hackers tried to blackmail Kesha. That does seem to be somewhat culturally unaware behavior. Was she a hacker target(Credit:CC Domain Barnyard/Flickr)It also seems a little dense that the hackers--reportedly a 17-year-old and a 23-year-old--began to boast about their Trojan prowess on the Web. So here were two people proving that nothing was safe on the Web by exposing themselves in that very same maze. The two hackers have not been formally charged. However, it seems that only the loyal, passionate, and thoroughly responsible fans of the original American Idol, Kelly Clarkson, plucked up the temerity to expose these alleged fiends. These fans were perplexed that Clarkson's unreleased music was available on the Web. In booming online voices, they sounded the alarm, and soon the FBI, together with their German allies, swung into action. The German publication Deutsche Welle does cast some doubt as to whether it was the stars' most personal laptops that were accessed by these alleged miscreants. Suggesting that perhaps the hackers managed to access the laptops of managers and others close to these legends, Deutsche Welle quotes Ralf Haferkamp of the Duisburg prosecutor's office: "I can't say whether the laptop sitting on Lady Gaga's nightstand was among them, but I think that's pretty unlikely."This is a curious assertion. Is Haferkamp truly suggesting that stars' laptops enjoy greater security than those of the mere minions they have at their disposal for a mere 10 percent (or less) of their earnings Do these stars employ their own hacker protection squads (paid by the hour, naturally) in order to fend off unwanted assaults Or might these stars' managers wish to discourage those who would now believe that accessing the very heart, the very control(-freak) room of the world's cultural greats is an easy processNo one is safe. Just like Kesha and every other great star in the world, we are all one small step from overexposure.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft has released a seventh test version of Internet Explorer 9 the company says is better at "real-world" Web-based JavaScript programs. But with it has come a rival's accusation that Microsoft essentially engaged in the storied computer industry practice of benchmark engineering--designing technology to be fast on an artificial speed test. The seventh IE9 platform preview comes with new improvements to its Chakra JavaScript engine. And Microsoft asserted Chakra is engineered to do better on actual Web site tasks rather than narrow benchmarks."Over the last few weeks, we've been tuning the JavaScript engine for more of the patterns we've found in real-world sites. Based on the progress since the last platform preview, we're releasing an updated platform preview build," said Dean Hachamovitch, Microsoft's IE general manager, in a blog post yesterday. The company has been creating a range of Web applications to let people test all the browsers that figure in today's fierce competition. And with the new version, Microsoft signaled its growing impatience with one test of JavaScript, the SunSpider benchmark--both with how basic its tests are and how limited it is compared to the full range of browser performance challenges."Microbenchmarks and real-world Web patterns have little in common," Hachamovitch said. "We think people should evaluate browser performance with real-world scenarios. Real-world scenarios involve using all the subsystems in the browser together rather than looking at single subsystems in isolation...real-world Web sites use JavaScript to respond to user input, manipulate strings, and move objects around the screen, and much more."Microsoft has griped about oversimplified browser benchmarks before, but that didn't stopped it from prominently publishing results that now show it faster than Google's Chrome, Opera Software's Opera, Mozilla'sFirefox, and Apple'sSafari. But also this week, Mozilla took issue with one aspect of IE and JavaScript: "dead code elimination."This idea involves scrutinizing software before it runs and eliminating parts that are mere busywork--flawed code programmers don't always realize they use. One aspect of SunSpider, a test called math-cordic, "is written exactly in a way that triggers this general optimization," Hachamovitch said. One objection came from Mozilla JavaScript engineer Rob Sayre, who filed an IE9 bug that led to Hachamovitch's explanation. Sayre, though, wasn't satisfied by that explanation, he indicated in a blog post. His analysis showed that IE9 is using dead-code elimination for some tasks involving a number of mathematical operators. "Curiously, the IE9 team has chosen not to eliminate more expensive operations such as multiplication or division. The set of analyzed operators do happen to be the ones that appear in the math-cordic benchmark," Sayre said. Then came his damning conclusion, essentially that Microsoft had tuned Chakra just for a good SunSpider result."I don't think it's possible to consider IE9's implementation of dead code elimination to be a serious general-purpose optimization. It seems clear that it hasn't been tested on anything other than SunSpider," Sayre said.Added Mike Shaver, Mozilla's vice president of engineering, in a tweet, "Disappointed in it's based on real-world' DCE [dead code elimination] nonsense from MSFT' wish they'd just admitted starting with SS [SunSpider] benchmark and making mistakes." And he offered a challenge: "Treasure hunt: find a pattern in any site on the internet that is eliminated by the IE9 DCE, other than math-cordic!"Benchmark engineering is an ages-old practice in the computer industry. For example, with prominent server database test, TPC-C, server makers would attach absurdly large numbers of hard drives in an effort to achieve high scores. The design represent real-world constraints customers faced.Alternatives to SunSpider exist--for example, Google's V8 benchmark and Mozilla's new Kraken. But even those are narrow tests that don't exercise many aspects of browser performance such as page-loading speed, graphics, and user interface responsiveness. The situation frustrates Chris Wilson, who for years worked on IE but recently joined Google to become Web platform advocate and developer at Google.Wilson "would rather see collaboration across vendors and developers on suite of tests that span DOM [the document object model interface browsers use to interact with Web pages] as well as pure JS [JavaScript]," he said in a tweet. He added that he prefer people "back away" from a single numeric JavaScript benchmark score as a performance claim, "frankly, because it has little to do with real-world user performance."

0 Vote(s)

BlackBerry Traffic rolls out of beta.(Credit:RIM/BlackBerry)BlackBerry-maker RIM has just promoted its free BlackBerry Traffic app from beta status to a general software release. Now that its available in the BlackBerry App World beginning today, BlackBerry Traffic could threaten competitors like Waze.BlackBerry Traffic is a driving tool that estimates the real-time distance between you and your destination. The app sources a combination of historical traffic patterns and real-time data taken from other BlackBerry Traffic users in the area. Like competitor Waze, which also crowd-sources its traffic details, BlackBerry Traffic displays travel times, alternate routes, and incident reports. There's a sharing feature so you can send your ETA ahead, using SMS, e-mail, or the BlackBerry PIN. BlackBerry Traffic also adds an element of location-based advertising by offering deals along your route.Setup is straightforward. You can add your location manually from your address book, and it's easy to search for and add other places using the built-in Bing search engine. Though clear enough to read, the app is rather text-heavy. There are other reasons it's not quite ready to leave Waze (in beta) or even the Google Maps traffic layer in the dust. Waze, which is completely based on user data, has many more social interaction elements and a much more appealing design. Google Maps' integrated traffic layer may not have as many standalone features, but it's got a more natural fit inside the app.In addition to a standalone version, we'd also like to see BlackBerry Traffic as an option within BlackBerry Maps, especially when it comes to sharing favorite places between the two. We'd also prefer a failover location-fixing mechanism so you can estimate your ETA before exiting a building that may block your GPS signal.BlackBerry Traffic is currently available in the U.S. and Canada on GPS-enabled BlackBerry smartphones running OS 4.6 and above. The software is the fruit of a Bay Area-based mapping team that RIM acquired in 2009.Article updatedat 12:20pm PT with more details.

0 Vote(s)

Nvidia reported a strong fiscal fourth quarter and said it was upbeat about the potential for its Tegra 2 mobile phone chips to be used in a raft of new smartphones and tablets. If Nvidia can keep its revenues high as it makes the transition to mobile chips, it may be one of the few technology companies to successfully navigate the PC-to-mobile transition.Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang said the results show a4Athe larger story of transformation.a4 He said that graphics chips for PCs remain critical to Nvidia, but the future growth of the company is coming from mobile computing. Nvidia has now shipped 1 billion graphics chips, most of them for personal computers.a4ATegra is positioned center stage in the revolution in super phones and tablets, while Tesla (high-end graphics chip familys) is becoming an essential processor for supercomputing,a4 he said. &''I have never been more excited about Nvidia&'s prospects.&''The company reported fourth quarter earnings of $171.7 million, or 29 cents a share, up 48 percent from a year ago. Revenue was $886.4 million, down 10 percent from a year ago. Non-GAAP earnings were 23 cents a share, 7 cents better than estimates. Revenues were slightly lower than the $892 million expected by Wall Street, but Nvidia said some analysts had high estimates based on assumptions they made about a legal settlement with Intel. That settlement gave Nvidia $57 million in the quarter as part of a larger $1.5 billion settlement of patent licensing issues.Nvidia&'s Tegra 2 mobile processor is getting into more tablet and smartphone designs from companies such as Dell, LG, Acer, Toshiba, Samsung and Motorola (Motorola&'s Xoom is pictured above). At the high-end, Tesla chips are becoming more common in supercomputers. Tegra customers are just starting to order chips in high volumes, but Huang said in a conference call that during the fourth fiscal quarter, Nvidia &''barely shipped anything&'' on Tegra. For the first fiscal quarter, Nvidia projects revenue growth of 6 percent to 8 percent from the fourth quarter and profit margins of 48.5 percent to 49.5 percent.Nvidia said it gained market share in desktop graphics chips, growing from 59 percent of the market to 61 percent. Both laptop and desktop chip demand was strong during the quarter. As&nbsp' Intel ships its Sandy Bridge combo graphics-microprocessor chips, Nvidia expects to gain market share because many PC makers are putting both the Intel processor, which has decent graphics performance, and the Nvidia graphics chips as well.Nvidia will start shipping its Kal-El quad-core Tegra mobile processor in the third quarter. Huang said this next-generation mobile processor is as much as a year ahead of rivals, which include Qualcomm, which will ship its 2.5-gigahertz quad-core mobile chip in early 2012. Nvidia has samples of its Kal-El chip in customers&' hands now.Beyond the near-term, Nvidia is working on Project Denver, an ARM-based microprocessor that is expected to be able to run Microsoft&'s next-generation Windows software. Nvidia has no timeline for that chip yet. Huang said that Nvidia is pouring a lot of engineering resources into Tegra and Project Denver.During the quarter, Nvidia said it is working not only with Volkswagen Audi Group on car-based entertainment systems, but also on systems for BMW and Tesla cars.Next Story: Campus Dibs raises funding to become the college Groupon Previous Story: McAfee aims to protect connected gadgetsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Kal-El, Project Denver, TegraCompanies: Nvidia, QualcommPeople: Jen Hsun Huang Tags: Kal-El, Project Denver, TegraCompanies: Nvidia, QualcommPeople: Jen Hsun HuangDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
In a renewed push for clean energy, President Obama called for one million electric cars to be on American roads by 2015 last month. But is that goal realisticThe government released a report this week saying that by its &''conservative&'' estimates for 2015, the electric car supply in the U.S. will total 1.2 million cars. One eyebrow-raising note in its estimates, though: The report projects supply of the Nissan Leaf (pictured) in the U.S. this year to be 25,000 cars. Nissan has reportedlydelivered just 106 cars as of last week, although it says it&'s ramping up production in March. The company has about 20,000 reservations, and reportedly 40 percent of those reservations have becomepurchases. And, tough-to-predict Leaf deliveries or not, at least one group is predicting the country won&'t reach that goal: Pike Research estimates that U.S. electric vehicle supply in 2015 will be closer to 841,000 cars.&''The vendora4a4s planned production of vehicles dona4a4t often match demand, and while there is greater demand than the small supply today, we dona4a4t expect that to continue very far into the future,&'' said John Gartner, Pike Research analyst. &''For the one million figure to be reached, it would require either a faster reduction in the price of the batteries than has been forecast, or sustained federal incentives that offset their higher cost.&''The government&'s report could be conservative since it doesn&'t include key automakers like Toyota, which has the plug-in Prius planned for 2012, and startup Coda, which says it wants to sell an ambitious 14,000 of its electric sedans in its first year of production (the car is slated to become available late this year). According to the report, the all-electric Nissan Leaf and partially electric Chevrolet Volt (pictured, below) will make up a large part of the projected supply, with 120,000 Volts to be produced every year from 2012 to 2015, and 15,000 Volts to be made available this year. By the government&'s estimation, the Leaf is expected to have 25,000 cars available this year in the U.S., then increase in supply each year until it totals 300,000 cars made for the U.S. by 2015.Some agree with this optimistic outlook. Management consultancy PRTM&'s North American automotive practice director Oliver Hamizeh said one million electric vehicles by 2015 is a &''realistic goal&'' and argues that the &''cool&'' in-car connectivity and monitoring features offered by electric cars will increase demand for the cars.Still, electric car skeptics abound. Venture capitalist and billionaire Vinod Khosla has come out against electric cars many times, even arguing recently that by 2025, the world&'s supply of lithium will not be enough to power the batteries needed for electric vehicles. But Gartner dismissed that, saying, &''The consensus is that lithium is in plentiful supply that even a few million EVs will take only a small fraction of the annual lithium (supply).&''ExxonMobil executive William M. Colton said today he wasn&'t a fan of electric cars, which may not be surprising considering he works for an oil company, but his concern that batteries are too expensive and, as Gartner suggested, are unlikely to come down in price anytime soon is common among consumers and analysts. Electric car batteries can account for up to half of a car&'s price, and even with federal and state incentives, electric car sticker prices are still higher than many gas-guzzling alternatives. But while consumers look at sticker prices, businesses look at return on investment. Major companies like Frito Lay, FedEx, Staples and GE have committed to buying electric cars and electric trucks. GE announced last year it would buy 25,000 electric cars for its corporate fleet, starting with 12,000 from GM, many of them likely Chevrolet Volts. Brian Hansel, chief executive of Smith Electric, which is delivering 176 electric trucks to Frito Lay this year, says customers can expect return on investment from fuel savings and saved maintenance costs within three to four years of purchase. For its part, the government is trying to spur sales and innovation. It is pledging to invest in electric vehicle research on subjects like advanced batteries and drivetrains and is proposing that the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric car buyers be turned into a rebate so the savings are visible when a customer buys the car, rather than when they file their taxes.Next Story: BioWare founders say corporate humility is key to success (video) Previous Story: Popular places to play mobile games: in the car and on the toiletPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: electric cars, electric vehiclesCompanies: Chevrolet, DOE, Nissan, Pike Research, Smith ElectricPeople: Barack Obama, Brian Hansel, John Gartner, Vinod Khosla, William M.
The Transportation Security Administration has become God&'s gift to YouTube ever since it introduced new body scanners and, for those who opt out, full-body pat-downs in an attempt to prevent future Underwear Bombers. The latest YouTube videos to arouse the attention of viewers include a shot of Tammy Banovac, who decided to go through security at the Oklahoma City airport wearing her black lingerie. The Oklahoman reported that Banovac uses a metal wheelchair and decided to go through in her underwear because she is always searched and had an &''unpleasant experience&'' two weeks ago at airport security. Her experience was recorded on video. She was subjected to another hour of hand searching and questioning because a nitrate residue was detected on her body. That meant she missed her flight to Phoenix. The video has more than 387,824 views since being posted a day ago. These kinds of videos, taken by cell phone cameras and posted on YouTube, are a public relations nightmare for the TSA. YouTube is at its best when it captures the comedy of everyday life. I think that&'s why it has stayed at the top of the heap when it comes to viral web videos. Some of the events are staged, for sure, and others are satires. But they capture a citizen revolt in action. The latest TSA controversy started when John Tyner filmed his own encounter with TSA screeners &8212' who were implementing the new pat-down procedures &8212' at the San Diego airport, where he said, &''If you touch my junk, I&'ll have you prosecuted.&''From the chart on the right, you can see that TSA searches have gone up dramatically in the past 30 days and then dipped again, according to Google Trends. Indeed, that trend chart shows that, as long as the TSA screeners behave themselves, this citizen revolt could very well peter out. But one good video, and that could turn around again.A search for YouTube and TSA on Google yields 12.1 million results. A search on YouTube itself for the letters TSA yields 6,420 results, including the following:Young boy strip searched by TSA (2,167,037 views).Meg McLain handcuffed to chair by TSA in Florida (audio interview, 902,062 views).Three-year-old girl accosted by TSA (69,995 views). It seems like there are a lot more spoofs than there are real incidents. Frankly, these videos are better than a lot of primetime TV programming, though Saturday Night Live did a great skit lampooning the TSA. They&'re both funny and disturbing at the same time, giving us an idea of the swath of humanity that passes through airport security every day. The TSA might very well want to ban cell phones altogether at some point.Meanwhile, another traveler protesting the new regulations went through airport security in his Speedos as he traveled on Nov. 24, which was dubbed National Opt Out Day as a protest to the new regulations. On his back were the words, &''Screw Big Sis,&'' which is probably a reference to Janet Napolitano, the secretary of Homeland Security.National Opt Out Day didn&'t seem to get many participants. But the TSA is clearly stuck in a hard spot because it can&'t seem to reconcile technology that delivers better security with letting travelers keep their dignity. Here are the Banovac and protest videos:Next Story: Arianna Huffington criticizes the media worlda4a4s swinging dicks Previous Story: Ngmoco to take hit iPhone game Pocket God to Android and Windows Phone 7PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: TSAPeople: Janet Napolitano, Tammy Banovac Tags: TSAPeople: Janet Napolitano, Tammy BanovacDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Would-be traveler John Tyner has become a cause clbre on the internet because he refused to subject himself to what he considered to be invasive body searching at the San Diego airport on Saturday. He had heard about the full-body scanners that the Transportation Safety Administration had installed that can give airport screeners an extremely detailed X-ray image of a traveler&'s body. The TSA&'s alternative for those who refuse the scans is an &''enhanced pat-down&'' search. That would have involved the screener touching Tyner&'s genitals with a hand. But Tyner refused that kind of search too and, using his cell phone&'s video camera, documented the conversation that followed with a male screener. The resulting confrontation wound up on the internet and went viral today and was covered by almost every broadcast outlet. Google news shows 654 news stories on the subject of the video recording now.A protest movement has rallied behind Tyner on the web. One group has declared Nov. 24, the day before Thanksgiving and the busiest travel day of the year, to be National Opt-Out Day. The group has also created a Twitter account where users are discussing whether the imagers detect sanitary napkins. Another group has created the site We Won&'t Fly, where the slogan is &''Act now. Travel with dignity.&''Before the Tyner incident, the airline pilots union had also expressed concern about the full-body scans exposing airline workers to excessive radiation. Also, pilot Michael Roberts also objected back in October to the policy, saying, &''No groping me and no naked photos&'' in his own post. Several researchers at the University of California at San Francisco have warned of the radiation risks. And the Israelis also don&'t use the full-body scanning because they can&'t capture explosives hidden in a body cavity.Others have posted their &''sexual assault&'' experiences as well. With the big Thanksgiving travel holiday approaching, the TSA could have a real problem on its hands if travelers follow through with their plans for civil disobedience on the busiest travel day of the year.&''If you touch my junk, I&'ll have you arrested,&'' Tyner said on part one of the video recording (embedded below), which Tyner posted on YouTube and blogged about on his site, Johnny Edge. After Tyner said that, the male screener asked for a supervisor, saying, &''I have an issue.&'' A female supervisor came out and said they would have to do a pat-down.&''I don&'t understand how a sexual assault can be made a condition of my flying,&'' Tyner said.&''This is not a sexual assault,&'' she said.&''It would be if you weren&'t the government,&'' he replied. The supervisor said that he didn&'t have to fly that day. Things went downhill. Tyner didn&'t fly. And he wound up posting the videos below along with a long post about the incident. The TSA has not offered comment on the incident. But the full-body scans were implemented after an attempted bombing by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the so-called underwear bomber, after he tried to hide explosives in his underwear. Some 385 scanning units are in use at 68 airports. It&'s not clear how many people truly sympathize with Tyner&'s cause. A USA Today/Gallup poll released last week said that 78 percent of air travelers approve of full-body scanners in airports and 84 percent believe the scanners would prevent explosives from being carried on a plane. Some 98 percent of passengers say they would rather have a full-body scan than a pat-down search.&''We ask the American people to play an important part of our layered defense,&'' Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano wrote in Monday&'s USA Today. &''We ask for cooperation, patience and a commitment to vigilance in the face of a determined enemy.&''The first video below has been viewed more than 353,000 times on YouTube, and Tyner&'s post has more than 5,000 comments. Among them: &''TSA: Party like it&'s 1984,&'' a reference to George Orwell&'s novel on totalitarianism.
There''s something compelling about the notion of a floating work space, which is why we covered WaterSpace''s H2Office earlier this year. Now, given that product''s appeal, it''s not entirely surprising to see the company working on a Floating Studio Flat as well.Currently in the design stage, WaterSpace''s Floating Studio Flat will be a one-bedroom studio apartment that''s intended for use primarily in inland waterways. With a wet room, kitchen, bedroom and an upper sun/drinks deck, the Floating Studio Flat will feature all the amenities of home in a variety of floor plans. Optional extra like integrated solar panels and a wind turbine, meanwhile, will make the flat almost self-sufficient. Pricing will start at GBP 79,950, and buyers will be able to have a hand in completing their home''s design, Welsh WaterSpace says. Particularly in coastal areas with high prices and tight housing markets, shifting some of the burden onto the waterways could make good sense. One to get involved in early (Related: Low costs and green creds at budget modular hotel.)Website: www.floating-studio-flats.co.ukContact: www.floating-studio-flats.co.uk/contact-us.html

0 Vote(s)

Kik, a new chat application for smartphones that is quicker and more social than SMS, is showing impressive viral uptake. The company says it has registered 450,000 downloads in the first 10 days since going live. And the uptake appears to be accelerating. It saw 150,000 new users in just 15 hours yesterday, chief executive Ted Livingston told me today, and the company is doing everything it can to manage the load. a4AWea4a4re just focusing on the servers,a4 he said this morning after temporarily freezing new downloads. See chart below for the growth pattern.Kik has some notable technology under the hood' more on that in a sec.First, herea4a4s how the app works: Once you download the application (Kik supports the iPhone, Android and Blackberry/RIM), it checks your address book and recommends the friends and other contacts you are likely to know who already have downloaded Kik. You can then start chatting with them immediately. Like IM, it&'s asynchronous, meaning it lets you see messages immediately, including when the person youa4a4re chatting with is typing. Additionally, it lets you know when theya4a4ve actually read their message.I tried downloading it this morning, and it worked great. It was aggressive in pulling in all the contacts I a4Amaya4 know. I didna4a4t recognize everyone it pulled. But this wasna4a4t really too bad, because they were only suggestions. The only people actually added to my address book in Kik were the people I messaged. So how is it different from a service like say, Google Talk (Gtalk), Googlea4a4s IM service After all, you can also opt in to GTalk for your mobile phone, even though you probably downloaded it originally to use on your desktop. Well, Livingston says therea4a4s a subtle difference. You dona4a4t know if your friend using Gtalk really is available immediately on their phone, or whether theya4a4re using their desktop. They wona4a4t necessarily respond, and if they dona4a4t, you wona4a4t know if they ever read the message. With Kik, you definitely know if theya4a4ve read it &8212' and you know as soon as they&'ve read it. In this way Kik, is optimized for mobile use. a4ATherea4a4s a subtle difference,a4 says Livingston. a4AI think [the download rate] shows therea4a4s a fundamental need for this.a4The service is like Blackberry Messenger, but cross-platform. Indeed, Livingston, 23, previously worked on strategy at RIM&'s Blackberry Messenger unit, but left two years ago.Hea4a4s been building the product ever since. He tested an early version for eight months, which let him reach a total of 10,000 users. Those users were upgraded to the new version 10 days ago.Herea4a4s where things get interesting. If it can build its community, Kik has a lot of new territory to cover if it wants to. It can layer on functionality as it sees fit. For example, it can let you take pictures, and show friends what youa4a4re seeing. It can then let you stream the music youa4a4re listening to, directly from your phone over your frienda4a4s phone. The same can be done for video. And it can be done over any device. While none of this is available right now with the app, Livingston demonstrated this advanced streaming technology to me, so it&'s clear he can turn it on at pretty much any time.During the demo of all this, we sat hundreds of miles away from each other, but he was able to remotely take over the Chrome browser (with my permission, of course) on my MacBook. He then played music over it &8212' all while remotely operating this from his phone. All I did was enter a code that he gave me so that my browser knew to pair with the phone and allow the stream. (A QR code can be used, too.)Ita4a4s pretty cool. Basically, Kika4a4s technology lets you wirelessly a4Aslinga4 any content on your phone to any device running on any software. This hasna4a4t been done before, as far as I know. Sure, AppleTV lets you stream iTunes content to the TV, but ita4a4s a closed garden. You cana4a4t run Apple content on other devices. Kika4a4s technology allows you to stream pretty much any content on any device with a browser, whether ita4a4s a basic PC, or even a PS3, Wii or a Windows Media Center device.Ita4a4s heady to think of the future of this application. I can scan my surroundings with the camera on my Droid, Blackberry or iPhone with merely a cellular connection, and then stream it to my frienda4a4s phone. Or I can go to my frienda4a4s home and stream an HD move from my phone onto his TV.Herea4a4s Kika4a4s magic: All of the data is actually stored on its servers, meaning that all of the heavy lifting is happening between the Kik server and my screen. So the content is not actually flowing form his device to mine. This reduces the latency that you seen with other products. It also means you dona4a4t waste your phonea4a4s battery life while doing the streaming.Anyway, all of that new stuff is down the road. Kik will have to sort through music and licensing models so that it stays legal. For now, Livingston is focused on the simple messenger application, which seems to be doing just fine.Next Story: Europe and China see lowest venture deal counts on record Previous Story: T-Mobile takes the gloves off, says it has the largest 4G network in the USPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Kik MessengerCompanies: KikPeople: Ted Livingston Tags: Kik MessengerCompanies: KikPeople: Ted LivingstonMatt Marshall is editor and CEO of VentureBeat.
Mother Nature&'s mechanical and computing techniques are the subject of much admiration among computer researchers. That&'s why a team of researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology created swimming robotic fish. The robots can swim through water in a school or otherwise maneuver in places where underwater submarines can&'t go. By creating machines that mimic biological functions, the researchers hope to produce robots with fluid movements that are far more nimble than today&'s machines.Mechanical engineers Kamal Youcef-Toumi (pictured) and Pablo Valdivia Y Alvarado designed the fish so they can be used to inspect submerged structures such as boats, oil and gas pipes, and detect environmental pollution. The could also patrol ports, lakes and rivers. And if you lose a few fish, it&'s not nearly as expensive as losing a submarine.Robot fish were first investigated at MIT as far back as 1994, when MIT ocean engineers created Robotuna, a four-feet long fish with 2,843 parts. The new fish are less than a foot long, are powered by one motor and have fewer than 10 components. The motor in the fish&'s midsection creates a wave that travels along the fish&'s body, propelling it forward. That&'s similar to the way real fish swim. The motor produces controlled vibrations. The fish are made from soft plastic, making them more maneuverable like real fish. The researchers say their techniques might be useful in creating movement for robotic limbs. The researchers have been able to create fish that can swim about a tenth as fast as real fish. The robotic fish can swim one body length per second. They can run on 2.5 watts to 5 watts of power. The researchers hope to power the robots with a small internal battery in the future.
