Tesla&39's new store is small, but that&39's fine, as the company only has one model to sell.(Credit:Wayne Cunningham/CNET)Tesla's next-generation EV store (photos) Tesla's newest store, which opened on April 13 in the Santana Row mall in San Jose, Calif., does not look like a place where you can buycars. First of all, it is a small storefront, a far cry from typical car-filled dealerships for other manufacturers. Much of the store's space is devoted to educating people about Tesla's vehicles and electric cars in general. As for selling cars, Tesla brings some of its Web site experience into the store, with large touch screens on the walls featuring the company's model configurator. And sales consultants staffing the store will be happy to help place an order for a new car, and take prospective buyers out for a test-drive in one of the cars kept in a nearby parking garage.Tesla VP of Sales George Blankenship came from Apple, where he created the idea of the Apple store, which has become a destination for Apple enthusiasts. The idea of the store is to create a similar experience with Tesla. It's not just for buyers, but also for fans. The San Jose store, and others that will soon follow, use a small footprint, but are set up in areas with high foot traffic. Tesla currently has a number of larger stores that more closely resemble traditional dealerships. These facilities will be converted to service centers, allowing Tesla to plunk down its smaller stores in city centers. The next store due to open will be in Denver's Park Meadows mall.Of course, when you only have one basic model, this store idea works. During 2012, Tesla will be phasing out the Roadster and will begin production of the Model S. The stores will serve as information centers for the new cars. Blankenship notes that theiPod was not available when Apple opened its first store, but the store served to generate interest in the new device. He hopes to repeat that success with Tesla.

0 Vote(s)

Hewlett-Packard has posted detailed specifications of two upcoming Pavilion dv7 laptops furnished with Intel's next-gen Sandy Bridge processor. HP&39's Pavilion dv7 will use two different Sandy Bridge quad-core processor models. (Credit:Best Buy)Though some details have been leaked already based on an Engadget report, HP's U.S. product support pages now list future models in all of their spec'd out glory (see graphic below). Intel is already shipping the processor to PC makers, which means when the chip technology is formally announced at the Consumer Electronics Show on January 5, systems will be in the pipeline. One model will sport the Core i7-2820QM 2.3GHz processor, listed with an "SC turbo" speed of 3.4GHz. Intel's Turbo Boost technology speeds up and slows down the processor to optimize performance and power, respectively. Another model is listed with the i7-2630QM 2GHz processor with an SC turbo speed of 2.90GHz. Both processors have a thermal envelope--aka, Thermal Design Power or TDP--of 45 watts. Typically, mainstream Intel laptop processors have a TDP of 25 or 35 watts. Generally, the higher the TDP, the more heat the chips can potentially produce. As HP has done on previous dv7s, some models come equipped with a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port, in addition to standard USB 2.0 ports. USB 3.0 can deliver a theoretical peak throughput of about 5 gigabits-per-second, roughly 10 times the speed of USB 2.0. Systems are also listed with Advanced Micro Devices' ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 and Radeon HD 5470 graphics processors.
Solar panel manufacturer SpectraWatt, which was spun out of chip giant Intel, will close its newly opened New York plant and expects to lay off workers, according to reports.SpectraWatt was created in 2008 and funded with a reported $91 million to create silicon cells for solar panels. Earlier this year, it moved it headquarters from Oregon to upstate New York where the state offered tax breaks to open a manufacturing plant.SpectraWatt was spun out of Intel two years ago to manufacture silicon solar cells. (Credit:SpectraWatt)On Tuesday, the company said that it will shut down the plant, which started operating in May this year, and it plans to start laying off at least 100 workers in March, the Associated Press reported. The company said that winter weather in Europe caused a slowdown in solar projects, cutting demand for its solar cells. The Poughkeepsie Journal reported that the company, which was praised by local officials for creating jobs, had been offered $8 million in subsidies by a New York economic development fund but most of that money had not yet been disbursed. Local officials told the paper they were shocked and surprised by the closing. In a statement provided to the Poughkeepsie Journal, SpectraWatt said it "continues to pursue alternatives aimed at improving its current situation and hopes to reverse this action."SpectaWatt blamed soft European demand for its shut down, but it and all solar cell and panel providers face intense price pressure from global competitors. In the past few years, prices for traditional silicon solar panels have dropped steadily, driven in part by a number of Chinese manufacturers that are scaling up manufacturing to bring costs down.

0 Vote(s)

When youa4a4ve built what is apparently the largest a4Alocal foruma4 on the Internet, how do you get even bigger Chris Tolles, the chief executive of news and forum site Topix, said the answer is politics. We spoke to Tolles back in October, shortly after Topix launched polls about every federal election in the United States, as well as local races in 37 states. Those polls received 200,000 votes and 100,000 comments and led to a spike in traffic &8212' Tolles said Topix saw 140 million pageviews in both September and October, its high point for the year. Now Tolles tells me that he&'s looking to make a more permanent shift towards more political content. The company, based in Palo Alto, Calif., is looking at how to keep that momentum going outside of the election season. The goal, Tolles said, is to create a place where people can find a4Aa continuous set of news and interactive featuresa4 discussing their elected officials. That includes featuring different Congressional bills and trying to show how theya4a4re relevant to readers.Therea4a4s no shortage of political coverage and commentary online already, but Topix tries to give the discussion a local spin &8212' for example, during its polls last fall, Topix broke down the response on different national issues by region, so you could compare opinions on (say) health care between San Francisco and Bakersfield. (And unlike many sites that see heavy concentrations of readership in tech-friendly urban areas like San Francisco, Tolles said Topixa4a4s readership tends to come from small- and medium-sized cities.)So why the new political focus For one thing, ita4a4s a way for Topix to go after the growing amount of money spent on election advertising. In my past conversations with Tolles, he&'s almost bragged about how fiery and angry the comments on Topix can get, but now it sounds like he wants to temper that passion with a little more substance:This stuff is incredibly juicy, without being salacious a4 Getting a local take is important, and this is a way for our commentary-focused site to draw attention to issues which are controversial and comment sticky, in a way that national sites cana4a4t duplicate.Topix&'s investors include a trifecta of news companies &8212' Gannett Company, The McClatchy Company, and Tribune Company.Next Story: A social network dark horse Tagged has 100M registered users Previous Story: New version of Angry Birds game will tie into animated movie RioPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: politicsCompanies: TopixPeople: Chris Tolles Tags: politicsCompanies: TopixPeople: Chris TollesAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Preorder sales of Applea4a4s iPhone 4 broke Verizona4a4s first-day sales records in only two hours, Verizon Wireless CEO Dan Mead said in a statement this morning.Even more impressive, Mead pointed out that those first two hours occurred between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m EST &8212' which shows just how desperately Verizon users want the iPhone.Verizon halted preorders of the iPhone at 8:10 p.m. EST last night after it was available for 17 hours. Ita4a4s still unclear just how many iPhones the company sold, since preorders went live earlier yesterday morning, although RBC Capital analyst Mike Abramsky estimates it to be somewhere below 100,000. The timing of the sellout falls in line with the iPhone 4a4a4s preorder sellout on AT&amp'T last year, which also took less than 24 hours. Some lucky Verizon customers have already been informed that their iPhones are on the way. Everyone else will have to wait until February 9 to buy it online, or snag it in stores on February 10.Verizon also released its latest iPhone commercial, featuring its infamous a4ACan you hear me nowa4 guy, which you can find below:Next Story: On the GreenBeat: Power-One forecasts weaker demand in Europe, Kior nears $1B loan for wood-to-fuel research Previous Story: Hotmail introduces aliases to create temporary email addressesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: iOS, iPhone, iPhone 4, preordersCompanies: Apple, Verizon, Verizon WirelessPeople: Dan Mead Tags: iOS, iPhone, iPhone 4, preordersCompanies: Apple, Verizon, Verizon WirelessPeople: Dan MeadDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.

Immersion has been making haptic, or touch feedback, technology since 1993. But now it wants to accelerate the adoption of touch feedback on smartphones and tablet computers. That means we&'re going to see a lot more apps that we not only see and hear, but also feel.Immersion&'s touch-feedback technology is already built into 200 million phones. But it is jump-starting the market with its new Motiv haptic development platform being announced today. The software tools make it easy for developers to automatically add haptic effects to their software, even if they don&'t know exactly how to make it happen. If Immersion&'s technology takes off, we could see a lot more creative apps with touch-feedback, particularly on Android phones.Dennis Sheehan (pictured), vice president of marketing at Immersion, said in an interview at the company&'s headquarters in San Jose, Calif., that Immersion designs the chips and hardware used to detect and reproduce touch sensations with the motors already present in phones for vibrate mode purposes. But app developers need more help from Immersion to create imaginative new uses of the technology.Much like how operating system vendors create tools for application developers, Immersion is creating the Motiv developer tools for integrating haptics into apps. There are more than 100 pre-designed haptic effects, such as explosions, clicks, materials, textures, or bouncing. Immersion can add touch effects to a game that doesn&'t already have them, such as Angry Birds, so that you can feel the twang of a slingshot when you shoot a bird at pigs in the game.Since Motiv adds those effects automatically, &''It&'s a lot less work for the developers,&'' Sheehan said.Immersion is also helping to integrate haptics into the user interface of the operating systems and helping phone makers integrate haptics technology into Android phones. For hardware makers, the so-called Motiv Integrator combines haptics with a build of the Android operating system. The haptics module adds touch feedback to every Android widget, so you can feel a bump when you move your finger over an icon on the Android phone&'s touchscreen. When you type a text message on a virtual keyboard for a phone, you can get a tiny sense of touch feedback which tells you that you just hit the right key.Immersion is the right company to do this since it has more than 1,000 patents issued or pending on haptics. It remains to be seen if users will appreciate the haptic technology the way that Immersion wants them too. In a survey of 211 phone users, about 90 percent said they preferred touch-feedback features when given a choice between nothing or touch sensations. The software development kit will be available in a couple of weeks.Check out our video of Sheehan with a couple of smartphone and tablet touch-feedback apps below.Next Story: With the social game flood, Kontagent&'s analytics track 100 million users Previous Story: U.S. is still the land of opportunity for VC fundingPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: haptic, Motiv, smartphones, tablets, touch feedbackCompanies: ImmersionPeople: Dennis Sheehan Tags: haptic, Motiv, smartphones, tablets, touch feedbackCompanies: ImmersionPeople: Dennis SheehanDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
