Mini showed off its new ConnectedDrive app in the Cooper Countryman.(Credit:Wayne Cunningham/CNET)Earlier this year Mini said it would integrate Web radio and other smartphone apps with itscars, but gave little detail of how the system would work. At the 2010 Los Angeles auto show, we got a Mini representative to give us a demo of its new ConnectedDrive system. To answer our most immediate question, Mini developed its owniPhone app, so Web radio, Twitter, and the other functions it is offering actually reside on the phone, using its processor power and data connection. With the iPhone connected to the car's USB port, control of the app gets taken over by the Mini's onscreen interface. The Web radio feature is powered by the iPhone, but accessed through the car.(Credit:Wayne Cunningham/CNET)Added to the list of audio sources on the Mini's LCD was Web radio, right along with satellite radio, AM, and FM. That Web radio entry only appears when a phone bearing the Mini ConnectedDrive app is hooked up. The Web radio feature of the Mini app lets you listen to thousands of radio stations that stream their audio to the Internet. The Mini ConnectedDrive app also offers Google Local Search, Twitter, and Facebook. The interfaces for each of these functions have been designed by Mini to avoid on-road distraction. For example, the Twitter feature does not let you type in a Tweet. Instead, the car comes up with canned Tweets that you can send. This Tweet function is kind of brilliant, as it uses data the car knows, such as location, current temperature, or how long you've been driving. It can take this data and punch it into Tweet templates, letting you easily update Twitter with your location or what a nice day it is while you're driving around. Mini suggests this feature will encourage social networking amongst Mini owners, making it possible for them to enjoy a drive together while keeping organized. For example, a lead car could Tweet direction changes. Users will also be able to create their own Tweet templates. We weren't shown the Facebook or Google local search functions, but Mini assured us they would be designed to avoid distraction. One idea behind integrating these apps with a car interface is that drivers will be less likely to try and Tweet or look at Facebook on their phones.Mini suggested it would build more functionality into its ConnectedDrive app as time went on. Further, the fact that the iPhone app interface now exists in the car will let Mini incorporate interfaces for other apps.Out,iPodWe also got to see a demonstration of another feature we had been hearing about, iPod-Out. This new feature incorporated into iPods and iPhones, lets the device send a remote interface out to a compatible screen through its cable. Mini has made its system compatible with iPod-Out.With iPod-Out, Genius playlists become available on the Mini&39's LCD.(Credit:Wayne Cunningham/CNET)The Apple-designed interface appearing on the Mini's LCD showed track information along with cover art. We were able to look at normal music library categories, such as album, artist, and genre, and select music by using the controls in the car.An advantage to iPod-Out is that it should never show the kind of sluggishness we've seen with other iPod integration systems, which have to get raw data from an iPod and replicate it within their own interfaces. We were also shown that Apple's Genius Playlist functionality is also ported to the Mini's LCD. While listening to a particular song, we chose this playlist option, and were treated to a series of songs similar to that which had been playing. For other smartphones, Mini is looking at a new standard being developed called terminal mode, which should offer similar functionality as iPod-Out. The Mini ConnectedDrive app is currently available in Europe, and will come out in the U.S. in January of 2011.

0 Vote(s)

If you know what this is and where it was taken, you could win a prize in the Picture of the Week challenge.(Credit:Daniel Terdiman/CNET)What a majestic building. Surely, something very solemn went on here. But what is it And where is it located If you know, you could win a prize in the CNET Road Trip Picture of the Week challenge. If you have those answers, please e-mail them to me no later than 6 p.m. PDT Friday (to daniel--dot--terdiman--at--cnet--dot--com, and PLEASE include "Picture of the Week" in the subject line). I'll choose a winner at random from among everyone who sends in both pieces of the correct answer. Please forgive me if you don't hear from me if you're not the winner. I get dozens of responses. Also, I've turned off comments because some people would post the correct answers there. I hate to shut down discussion, but I want you to figure out the answer on your own.One caveat: no individual can win more than two prizes. Also, for everyone who played regularly during Road Trip 2010, please note that this is the 11th of the weekly Picture of the Week challenges. With Road Trip 2010 officially finished--and therefore no more new Road Trip pictures per se--the challenge is now taking place each Thursday, and the photos could come from anywhere, not just Road Trip 2010 locations, and might be related to stories I've written in the past. So, please have fun playing today, and then come back each Thursday. For most of the summer, Geek Gestalt was on Road Trip 2010. After driving more than 18,000 miles in the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Northwest, the Southwest and the Southeast over the last four years, I drove 5,266 miles this summer looking for the best in technology, science, military, nature, aviation and more throughout the American Northeast.
Coverity tallied various flaws in Android 2.2 that can lead to security vulnerabilities.(Credit:Coverity)Coverity, a company with tools to check for programming problems that pose security risks, has found 359 of them in a scan of the Android source code. There are 88 high-risk problems and 271 medium-risk problems in the source code underlying the Android kernel used in HTC's Incredible phone, the company said Tuesday. Android uses the Linux kernel, but the Android-specific components have a higher defect rate than mainstream Linux, Coverity said. Some good news for Google, though, is that the defect rate is still lower than the industry average of one defect per 1,000 lines of code. Specifically, Android's kernel was less than half of that--0.47 defects per 1,000 lines, Coverity said. Some bad news is that the Android-specific code had more problems."We found that the Android-specific files had a higher defect density (0.78 defects/kloc) than any other component in the system (the other components consist mostly of files unmodified from a Linux kernel). In addition, the Android-specific files had more high-risk defects than any other component," Coverity said in the report. The number and proportion of defects are higher in Android-specific areas of the Linux kernel, according to Coverity.(Credit:Coverity)One issue with Android, along with many other open-source projects with dispersed participation, is pinning down just whose job it is to fix a problem."Accountability for Android software integrity is fragmented," Coverity said in its report. "The problem is no different with Android than what we see across open source. Android is based on Linux, which has thousands of contributors. Compound that with the Android developers from Google, the contributors to Android from the larger development community, and OEMs [original equipment manufacturers such as phone makers] that supply components for specific configurations of Android to support different types of devices and the lines of accountability are quickly blurred."

0 Vote(s)

Intel traditionally builds chips for its own use, but it's now branching out to create one for another manufacturer.Intel will create chips based on its 22-nanometer technology for Achronix Semiconductor, Achronix announced today. This marks the first time Intel is designing a chip for another manufacturer and may indicate that the chip giant is looking to do some contract manufacturing for outside customers.Based in San Jose, Calif., Achronix will use Intel's 22-nanometer chips to develop its own Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). FPGAs are integrated circuits that can be programmed after they've been manufactured, allowing customers to adapt them for their own needs. Known as the Achronix Speedster22i, the new FPGA will see as much as a 300 percent gain in performance, 50 percent lower power drain, and 40 percent less cost than FPGAs build on 28-nanometer technology, Achronix said. Geared for telecommunications, networking, industrial, and consumer markets, the FPGA is expected to drive such applications as 100G and 400G Ethernet networking and LTE mobile communications, added Achronix. The Speedster22i will also be the first commercial FPGA family that can be made in the U.S., setting it up for military and aerospace customers, which require that such chips be made domestically for security reasons."Intel has the best process technology in the world and we are privileged to have formed this strategic relationship, which enables simultaneous improvements in speed, power, density, and cost," Achronix CEO John Holt said in a statement. "The combination of the advanced 22nm process from Intel and the advanced FPGA technology from Achronix enables Speedster22i to eclipse other FPGA solutions expected to hit the market in the next few years."Though Intel has downplayed the new deal as a sign of things to come, some analysts see it as an indication that the company is jumping into the contract manufacturing business, according to The New York Times."I think this is only the beginning of Intel manufacturing for others," said Gus Richard, a microprocessor industry analyst with Piper Jaffray, as quoted by the Times. The deal will get off the ground sometime next year, according to the Times, when Intel will begin making the chips for Achronix.First demoed by CEO Paul Otellini at the Intel Developers Forum a little more than a year ago, the 22-nanometer microprocessors are the latest chips being pushed to the market. Squeezing 2.9 billion individual transistors in an area the size of a fingernail, the 22-nanometer chip has challenged traditional manufacturing processes, which use conventional photolithography, a method by which circuits are printed onto semiconductor chips.Intel recently announced that it would spend between $6 billion and $8 billion to build a new chip manufacturing plant and upgrade its existing fabrication plants in Arizona and Oregon. The new and existing plants will be put to work making the 22-nanometer processors, which are being designed to provide higher performance and longer battery life at a cheaper cost.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Wayne Cunningham/CNET)Car Tech editor Antuan Goodwin said of the Corvette Z06 that it was the first car that actually scared him. That reaction is reasonable when you're putting the car's 505 horsepower to the wheels all at once, and it starts to drift sideways. The Corvette Z06 is most at home on the smooth pavement of a track. Put it on bumpy backroads and keeping the front end pointed straight becomes a major challenge. Oh yes, we were taken with the sound of the 7-liter engine and the exhilaration of its thrust, but the only place to appreciate all that this car can offer is a track.Oh, and cabin tech Forget about it. The Corvette Z06 offers navigation and a phone system, but these features are some of the worst we've seen.Check out our 2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 review.

0 Vote(s)

There are lessons for digital music in the tale of &34'The Music Man.&34' (Credit:Warner Bros. )commentary If you want to get a sense of both the wishful thinking and the likeliness of dashed dreams for people investing in the digital-music business, click over to your Netflix queue and rent a copy of the 1962 musical "The Music Man."Humor me here: "The Music Man," first a Broadway play, tells the story of a traveling huckster who convinces people in small towns that he can teach their tin-eared kids to play a musical instrument--all he needs is money to buy their trumpets and whatnot. And what happens once they give him his money He's off to the next town to take advantage of some more wishful thinkers. That brings me to wishful thinker du jour, David Hyman, founder of digital-music service MOG. Hyman wrote a very cheerful column in TechCrunch last week in response to a gloomier assessment of the segment's health from Imeem's founder and former CEO Dalton Caldwell. Hyman declared that those music services with "models that work, can reap massive rewards through [digital music's] tumultuous evolution." Hyman seemed to suggest that MOG is one of those services that has the "know-how, hard work, diligence and passion" and that is "making it." Good for him. It's important to believe in yourself. But should we believe in his companyNo, I'm not saying Hyman is a con man. He's more like one of the good townspeople who think their kids can learn to play trombone. Digital music has not been kind to entrepreneurs. Other than Apple's iTunes, no digital-music company or service has provided proof that it is consistently generating significant revenue or profits. Pandora said in January that it saw its first quarterly profit last year but has been quiet about profits since. Even if there is a group of quietly successful start-ups somewhere out there, it is doubtful that MOG would be a member. MOG, a Berkeley, Calif., service that has been around in one form or another since 2005, launched a subscription music offering in December. According to traffic statistics from media measurement company Quantcast, MOG's site topped 3 million worldwide monthly visitors a year ago, has trended downward ever since, and is now below 2 million. The company hasn't fared well in consumer surveys either. Research firm The NPD Group takes a survey every quarter that it calls the "music acquisition monitor," Russ Crupnick, senior entertainment industry analyst said today. NPD analyzes four groups.First, are music services that have awareness among consumers and high usage, such as iTunes and Pandora. Second, is a group with reasonably high consumer awareness, but less usage than the iTunes and Pandoras. That includes AOL Music and Yahoo Music. The next category has low usage, such as Slacker and Vevo, but are showing signs that the public is learning about them. The last category are services with low usage and low awareness, and that's where MOG is, according to Crupnick. MOG&39's traffic spiked a year ago, but since a subscription service was launched in December, traffic has trailed off. (Credit:Quantcast)"The company's awareness was at 2 percent," Crupnick said. He added that another service with comparable numbers was SpiralFrog, one of the so-called iTunes killers that sprang out of the ad-supported music craze in 2006 but never connected with the public and resorted to boosting visits through iffy marketing schemes. The company collapsed spectacularly in 2009. What's killing music services and has depressed the sector is that most consumers just don't want to pay for music. Why should they For a decade, a generation of music fans have grown up listening to music they obtained free from illegal file-sharing services. On the heels of those services came start-ups that offered more free music if users were willing to put up with a few ads. What nobody has proven yet is whether these free music sites can convince consumers to reach into their pockets to pay for songs or anything else. While Hyman, the former CEO of Gracenote and MTV exec, didn't offer any hard data about his company's financial performance, he did suggest that his company is doing well financially. First, he disputed Caldwell's assertion that the labels force digital-music start-ups into bad deals. "The labels don't require you to do deals that make no economic sense," Hyman said. "For example, MOG is very happy with the realistic minimum guarantees that were set, all of which we've hit. You have to come to the labels with a great idea, a great product, and a model that works."Later Hyman said, "It's a low-margin business, yes, partially offset with improved margins from our ad business, but a great business on its own." I interpret that to mean that MOG is squeezing out a profit. If true, good for him. But the stats say he has yet to attract an audience of any important size. By comparison, Quantcast says Pandora had fewer than 14 million users to its site a year ago, but is now at more than 20 million. On a side note, Hyman in his commentary took a shot at younger techie entrepreneurs like Caldwell, who have tried and failed to make a go of digital music. "Digital music seems to be a game that every twentysomething wants to try and play, and it's almost as if creating a digital music product is a rite of passage for millions of young buck programmers," Hyman said. "It's unfortunate that because it's a sexy space, and because there are tons of entrants into the field, all of the noise creates an impression that winning can't be done."That's unfair. There have been plenty of experienced executives in their 40s and 50s who have tried their hand at online music and failed to make it work, including Mike Bebel, CEO of Ruckus, and Joe Mohen, founder of SpiralFrog. Entrepreneur Bill Nguyen has a great record of start-up success and he couldn't make a go of Lala, though he sold it to Apple late last year. Digital music simply isn't anywhere near as rosy as Hyman makes it seem. There are too many failures and too few successes. Heck, even download sales have stopped growing. If what Hyman said was true, investors would be moving into the space instead of out. But the opposite is happening. Hyman, Caldwell, Bebel, Nguyen, Daniel Ek of Spotify, and many of the other founders are smart guys who have what it takes to, as Hyman said, "make it." But a good business isn't built on promises or hype. It's built on strong revenue and profit. Sounds easy, but it's not, as many failures have shown. Perhaps Hyman will prove us all wrong and MOG will become a wild success. We'll see. In the meantime, I'm going to keep an open mind about Hollywood musicals and relearn an old lesson about kidding yourself from "The Music Man."Pandora, the online radio service, sees 10 times MOG's traffic and we&39're not totally sure that company is profitable.(Credit:Quantcast)

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:AP)About a month after RIM announced its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, the company is releasing its BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR, a software developer kit that can be used to program apps and games for the PlayBook. The SDK specifically targets Adobe AIR, a tool that allows developers to create software that can work on a variety of platforms, including Windows,Mac, and the BlackBerry PlayBook. Working with the cross-platform Adobe AIR is part of RIM's strategy for getting more Web developers to generate PlayBook apps, who might not ordinarily create applications for the smaller BlackBerry smartphones. In particular, RIM hopes its SDK will encourage developers familiar with Adobe's tools to program for RIM's contender to the iPad and GalaxyTab.In late September, RIM outlined its goal to woo traditional Web developers in addition to mobile programmers by delivering tools like the Adobe AIR SDK. The PlayBook will also integrate the contentious Flash Player 10.1 in addition to Adobe AIR applications. The SDK is available beginning today, with RIM accepting app submissions by the end of 2010, in time to get BlackBerry App World ready for the PlayBook's projected release date in early 2011--although there's no specific sale date yet named.
Given that some 350,000,000 cups of coffee are consumed each day in the United States alone, it''s not too surprising to see social entrepreneurs tapping into that consumption for charitable good. In August we featured Newhall Coffee''s custom blends for nonprofit fundraisers, and just recently we came across Project7, which donates to a different cause when it sells each of its seven blends.Texas-based Project7''s coffees are all harvested from small, organic farms that are certified Fair Trade and USDA Organic. Sold through coffee-of-the-month subscriptions, each coffee blend is attached to a specific cause. Its French Roast coffee, for instance, is associated with its a4AHeal the Sicka4 project, so that each canister sold translates into medicine provided for one person suffering from malaria. Its Nicaragua Hacienda coffee, on the other hand, is linked with its a4AFeed the Hungrya4 project' each canister sale provides seven meals in American communities. Other charitable projects supported by the organization include supplying clean water to those in need, planting fruit trees, housing orphans, educating African children and providing counseling for children of war. Project7''s coffee subscriptions are available in increments of three, six or 12 months, with monthly pricing of USD 45, USD 40 and USD 35, respectively. Combining the increasingly ubiquitous subscription model with a heaping helping of corporate generosity, Project7''s effort is sure to please countless coffee-loving members of Generation G.

Sencha is making a big bet on HTML5. The company, which was formerly known as Ext JS, raised a hefty $14 million round led by Sequoia Capital in June. a4sSince then it has been perfecting its HTML5 framework Sencha Touch a4" a framework that lets you build mobile web apps for iOS and Android that feel almost native and are also cross-platform. And today, the company is adding another big addition to its product suite: Sencha Animator. If you&'ve used Flash before, Animator should be fairly easy to pick up. It&'s a tool for creating CSS3-based animations that will work on WebKit browsers a4"a4sdrag a few objects and images onto the screen, set up some keyframes, and you should be off and running. And, unlike Flash, these animations will work on iOS devices (and Android, BlackBerry, and anything else that supports WebKit). Here&'s how the company is describing the product:Sencha Animator allows you simply place objects (text, shapes, and images) onto a re-sizable stage area, configure their properties and then animate to bring them to life. You can move, scale, skew and rotate objects singly or at various levels of nesting, in 2D or 3D space. With Sencha Animator, you can also take advantage of CSS3 capabilities like gradients, blurs, reflections and shadows. You can create basic animations quickly and easily. But Animator is also designed to be a CSS3 power-tool. So when you need to add HTML or custom CSS, ita4a4s easy to do that too. Best of all, Sencha Animator outputs pure CSS3 animation code, so ita4a4s hardware accelerated on Apple iOS, which creates incredibly smooth animations. This also means ita4a4s ready to work with any JavaScript library, not just Sencha. The application is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux. It&'s still rough around the edges a4" this is a beta release, and additional features, like a gradient maker, are still in the works. It also doesn&'t support some major browsers like Firefox yet (Sencha says that Firefox hasn&'t implemented support for CSS3 keyframes). You can see some demos of HTML/CSS-based animations at the bottom of this page.Sencha will be selling a standard version of Animator for a price in the &''low hundreds of dollars&'' for each user. This also obviously has a big appeal to advertisers a4"a4sSencha will be offering a version with additional functionalitya4sspecificallya4sfor them.Sencha isn&'t the only company building HTML5/CSS3 based tools. Adobe is also hard at work on its own products, including a HTML5-editing tool called Edge (which hasn&'t been released a4syet). In the advertising space, Sprout offers Advine, a tool for authoring ad creative that supports both HTML5 and Flash.CrunchBase InformationSenchaInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

For the past several weeks, there&'s been a lot of talk about a large new round of funding that the social startup Tumblr was raising. That culminated today with a report in Fortune with numbers on the round. We had been hearing very similar numbers a4" around $25 million on a $100 million pre-money evaluation a4" but it turns out those numbers were likely low, we had heard from sources close to the funding. But while the numbers are still a bit up in the air, we do know that as Fortune and Business Insider reported earlier, Sequoia Capital is leading this new round. And we&'ve heard that previous investors Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures are on board once again. Further, like Business Insider, we&'re hearing that Sequoia&'s Roelof Botha will join Tumblr&'s Board as a part of this investment, which will likely close in the next couple of weeks. We spoke with Tumblr founder David Karp earlier today, and while he declined to comment on any of the funding news, he did offer up some other details about the company, and where they&'re heading.First of all, Tumblr just opened a new office in New York City. For the past several months they were working at capacity at their old office, with a team of 12. But with the new space that Karp says is roughly four times as big, they&'ve already expanded to 16 people now. And they&'ll be at 20 employees before the end of the year, Karp says.Given the growth Tumblr is seeing, it&'s pretty incredible that they&'ve been able to keep up with only a team of 12, but Karp admits that it has been a challenge. And they&'re now putting the focus on ramping up hiring to make sure they can keep pace. He expects they&'ll be at 30 employees by early next year, most of them engineers,&nbsp'essentially&nbsp'tripling the size of the company in just a few short months. If you&'re wondering how they&'re paying for this hiring spree, see: above.Karp notes that he worked really hard to keep the team small up until this point, to keep everyone focused, but says that they now have so many directions that they want to go in, that they need more people. One of those is a new Director of Product,&nbsp'Derek Gottfrid, who they nabbed from The New York Times, as we first reported last week.Another new hire is Rich Tong, a co-founder of&nbsp'Weardrobe, which sold to Like.com in late 2009. Tong is Tumblr&'s first specialized community director, leading the fashion community. This is a key area of focus for Tumblr going forward as this community makes up a full 16 percent of Tumblr&'s most popular sites, Karp says.He notes that in the next few months, a huge focus for Tumblr will be how to better cater to the creative communities they&'ve attracted. Fashion, film, photography, these are all hugely important to the platform, he says. Karp believes that focusing on them will help&nbsp'separate&nbsp'them from that other social network, Facebook, which has not done a good job of handling these specialized communities so far. In fact, Karp considers Facebook to be &''arguably hostile&'' towards them.Tumblr wants to be &''the best place in the world for the best creative communities,&'' Karp says. He wouldn&'t give any specifics about what they&'re thinking about doing here, just that it&'s a key area of focus.Karp declined to disclose any sort of revenue numbers, but does say that they&'re making a good amount just from the theme community alone. Tumblr currently sells customized themes, created by the community, at a variety of prices. They split the revenues with the theme creators at an &''App Store-like split&'', but it is a tiered system. The more expensive the theme, the more generous the split is, he says. When the new money comes in, you can probably expect Tumblr to continue to focus on scaling and the product short term, rather than any big money-making schemes, is what I&'m hearing.
