A self-described follower of Geek Pride Day flaunts items of geekery including a sonic screwdriver and Axis of Anarchy button.(Credit:CC Dani Figueiredo/Flickr)Despite the fact that I have crashed computers since I was 8, know more people online than in real life, and have knifed four people consecutively in Battlefield, I have somehow managed to miss out on the fact that today, May 25, is annual Geek Pride Day. No more, however. When I found out about this hallowed day of geekery today, I immediately went and put on my Boba Fett/Empire Strikes Back T-shirt and listened to the original movie soundtrack in a 320Kbps MP3. Why is May 25 the chosen date Well, a few critical events happen to fall on this day:May 25, 1977: Star Wars opened in 32 theaters and became an instant cult-classic.May 25, 2001: Two weeks after "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" author Douglas Adams died, fans commemorated his passing by creating "Towel Day," playing off an amusing life-saving reference in his famous book.A special day for Discworld fans. According to the Discworld &amp' Pratchett Wiki, "The People's Revolution of the Glorious Twenty-Fifth of May ended the increasingly tough reign of Lord Winder."Geek Pride Day (be sure to check out some of these amusing "Geek Pride Day" videos on YouTube) was originally created by a Star Wars-obsessed group in Spain that dubbed the day "Orgullo Friki" in their native tongue. On May 25, 2006, a crowd of 300 in Madrid celebrating the event held a makeshift parade, and one of the highlights of the afternoon was forming a giant human Pac-Man game. There are 10 kinds of people--those who get Geek Pride Day and those who don't.(Credit:ThinkGeek) The newly created holiday became a viral topic online and has grown progressively larger ever since. A Spanish Web site that serves as a makeshift headquarters for Geek Pride fans in that country created a special video hailing the event.Did you know it was Geek Pride Day If so, how did you mark it ForeverGeek has a great list of responsibilities geeks must shoulder, and you may want to take those responsibilities extra seriously today. If there is a discussion about something geeky, you must give your opinion.Wait in line on every opening night. If you can go in costume or at least with a related T-shirt, all the better.Befriend any person or persons bearing any physical similarities to comic book or sci-fi figures.Try to take over the world! Hey, now that I think about it, I inadvertently celebrate this holiday every day.

0 Vote(s)

Verizon&39's 4G VL600 USB modem is truly a speed demon, but you don't want to enjoy it too much due to the limited data plans.(Credit:Dong Ngo/CNET)I reviewed the LG VL600 4G LTE USB modem awhile ago and conclude that apart from the limited and expensive data plans Verizon offers with it, it makes a great solution for mobile Internet access. It seems to have just gotten better. Verizon announced today a firmware upgrade for the device that the company calls a "software update." This is not to be confused with the VZAccess Manager, which is used to start the connection. According to Verizon, the firmware update to the VL600 modem offers the following improvements:Successful reconnection to the network after the SIM card's activation or reset. The time and size of LTE Data usage sessions are now accurately recorded in the VZAccess Manager Session Log.VZAccess Manager now displays current network connection correctly. The modem now scans for better service more often to ensure the best connection possible.Unfortunately, there's no word on whether the company will lower its monthly fee of $80 and/or increase its data cap to more than 10GB (or unlimited). For now, the Clear 4G+ modem, which comes with a $55/month unlimited 4G data plan, is still clearly a better deal for those who don't travel outside of the state frequently. The new firmware, version VL600ZV4, and its update tool can be downloaded for free here. The upgrade process is fairly easy and straightforward but the detailed instructions can also be found here (PDF).

0 Vote(s)

There's some good news for developers who have not yet gotten paid for their app sales as part of the new Windows Phone Marketplace: payday is coming a little sooner than the company had first announced. Instead of getting that money sometime in February, Microsoft has moved up its first round of developer payouts to the fourth week of January. Thus far, developers have been unable to cash in on software that has been on sale since late October, while Microsoft has worked to get its payment system up and running. After this first round of payments is out, Microsoft says it will be sending them every month. Payouts will also include sales of apps and games from both its Windows Mobile 6.X andWindows Phone 7 marketplaces. This morning Microsoft also rolled out a counterpart to the sales process in the form of a reporting tool that gives developers a detailed view of how their applications are performing on the marketplace. This breaks down how many downloads their apps have received, and whether those were paid or unpaid, as well as what country the buyer was from. No word yet on whether these will be updated more than once a day.In a blog post announcing some of the additions, Todd Brix--who is Microsoft's senior director of mobile, said the company has also been listening to criticisms over its App Hub registration process, which is how developers sign up to publish applications to Microsoft's Windows Phone Marketplace. "We've heard you loud and clear that the registration and submission process hasn't been ideal and has been frustrating to too many developers," Brix said. "In response, we've made a number of fixes and enhancements throughout the process over the last 2 months, including a number of new improvements available today."Brix also said that 91 percent of applications that get submitted to Microsoft are certified and published within two days, and that 86 percent of the 1,000 or so developers who join the program have an account ready to use in 10 days. So far that's tallied up to 18,000 registered developers. Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 marketplace now has close to 4,000 applications, up from a little more than 1,000 at the platform's launch in late October.

0 Vote(s)

The biggest social-networking site in the world broke with many of its online brethren today when it issued a statement saying that it will not ban content from a "fan page" associated with WikiLeaks, the controversial repository of leaked confidential documents whose founder, Julian Assange, is currently on the run."The WikiLeaks Facebook Page does not violate our content standards nor have we encountered any material posted on the page that violates our policies," said the statement, which was prepared when ReadWriteWeb's Marshall Kirkpatrick started poking around to see which online services may follow the lead of Amazon Web Services and PayPal in blocking WikiLeaks. It's a well-crafted statement, however, one that leaves open the possibility Facebook could change course. All it's saying right now is that Facebook does not currently believe WikiLeaks has posted content to its page that violates the social network's terms of service.Facebook's handling of whether to block controversial and potentially harmful content from its servers has not been without criticism: it has opted not to ban groups pertaining to Holocaust denial, for example, claiming that while it finds Holocaust denial "repulsive and ignorant," the groups are allowed to stay on the social network if they do not contain illegal material. WikiLeaks, obviously, is a different and far more complicated matter entirely. Many believe Assange could have blood on his hands for leaking documents that could put the U.S. or its allies in danger overseas, and the incoming chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee has said he wants WikiLeaks listed as a terrorist organization. However, Assange has also become a hero for free-speech and government transparency advocates. It's a status that has only been elevated since the recent WikiLeaks document releases and the subsequent attempts by corporations and lawmakers to stop Assange. The Wikileaks page on Facebook has nearly 1 million followers.

0 Vote(s)

Nvidia chief executive Jen-Hsun Huang announced today that Nvidia has been working for some time on Project Denver, a high-performance ARM microprocessor. He didn&'t specifically say that this ARM chip would run Windows, but he showed a headline that said Microsoft plans a version of Windows 8 that will run on ARM chips. If all goes as planned, Nvidia could very well disrupt the duopoly of Intel and Advanced Micro Devices, which (while challenged by Via Technologies) dominate the market for chips that run Windows-based PCs. This is part of a chess game among giant tech companies to leapfrog each other or invade each other&'s markets. Billions of dollars in chip and computer industry revenues are at stake.Putting two and two together, it makes sense that a high-end ARM chip is what would be required to run the Windows operating system, which to date has only run on x86 (Intel-compatible) computers. Huang made the announcement of Project Denver at the very end of a press conference at the Consumer Electronics Show, just before Microsoft began its own press conference where the subject is how to make Windows run on ARM processors.Steve Sinofsky, president of Microsoft&'s Windows group, said that the company is planning to show that Windows can run on PCs, slate computers (tablets) and mobile devices too. Huang said in his press conference that there were rumors that Nvidia was working on something big and that it was an Intel-compatible processor. But it turns out that the chip is ARM based. Huang referred to it as a &''game changer.&'' The hint is that this is part of Nvidia&'s master plan to wedge its way into Intel&'s market, even as Intel tries to squeeze Nvidia out of graphics by putting graphics capabilities into its Sandy Bridge microprocessors.Next Story: Microsoft shows cool demos of ARM-based computers running Windows Previous Story: Nvidia&'s Tegra 2 aims to power a new generation of super phones and tabletsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: ArmCompanies: Arm, Intel, Microsoft, NvidiaPeople: Jen Hsun Huang Tags: ArmCompanies: Arm, Intel, Microsoft, NvidiaPeople: Jen Hsun HuangDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Last week, Tim Wu challenged me to another, longer debate about the future of the Web. His new book, The Master Switch, argues that every time there is a major communications innovation, a handful of big companies find a way to close it off, keeping the future spoils for themselves. That hurts incremental innovation and ultimately hurts consumer choice in the name of convenience and low-prices. His book is about all the ways the Web is no different from, say, radio and the telegraph and old Hollywood studios.I&'ve argued the Web is different because of technological reasons, community reasons, and capitalization reasons. Because of the way startups are financed this time around, there is more money on the side of the Web staying open than there is in closing it.My evidence is simply how things have gone so far: Most of the early Web giants like eBay, Yahoo and AOL have struggled at the hands of well-funded upstarts. The fact that in just a few years Facebook has racked up one of the largest valuations of a Web company in the world and even younger Groupon just turned down billions from Google proves the Web is nowhere close to being locked up by thea4sincumbents.In this longer debate on bloggingheads.tv, Wu raises a few good counter arguments that concern him about the industry&'s future. And they hit home because they are two things I worry about too: Silicon Valley&'s increasing reliance on acquisitions for exits and apps running on top of platforms like the iPhone and Facebook for distribution. We also talk about the distinction between the computer Web and the mobile Web when it comes to openness. The whole debate is below.&nbsp'

0 Vote(s)

So you went as an Angry Bird for Halloween and your kids are getting Angry Bird plush dolls in their holiday stockings. But that leaves nothing for you, the hard-working family provider. Clearly Santa should bring you some Angry Bird merchandise this year, too. It&'s only fair. You&'ve been a good kid.Good thing Gear4 just announced a line of Angry Birds iPhone 4 and iPod touch cases that will dress up your device as either an Angry Bird or smug Pig King. Be warned though. While the cases are constructed out of hard plastic and are probably plenty durable, they&'re not going to allow you to chuck your phone through plates of glass or wood beams. Yeah, that&'s not a good idea although here&'s hoping that someone does and uploads the tomfoolery to YouTube. Both&nbsp'variants&nbsp'run $24.99 each and will probably be one of best things you get this year. Fresh off of the announcement of Facebook Messages (yes, that&'s what the product is called) Facebook CEO Zuckerberg took the stage at Web 2.0 Summit to talk about the state of Facebook.Zuckerberg went into the recent scuffles with Google, how soon every major product will be rethought to be social, why Facebook&'s been on a recent acquisition tear and more. But the most insightful part of the interview was when Zuckerberg called out John Battelle and Tim O&'Reilly on the inaccuracy of their Web 2.0 &''Points of Control&'' map.a4AYour map is wrong.
There''s nothing like free samples to get consumers to try something new, as countless brands have recognized over the ages. Last year we saw that concept put to work on female patrons at Tokyo''s LCAFE, but recently one of our spotters alerted us to an even bolder example, also in Japan: Free Caf Harimaya Station, which offers a variety of free drinks and snacks to anyone at any time.Free Caf Harimaya Station is the brainchild of Harimaya Honten, maker of traditional Japanese rice crackers. With seven locations already established in major shopping areas nationwide, the Free Cafs serve up freshly roasted and brewed coffee, tea and roasted green tea to their patrons for no charge, along with the traditional rice snacks for which Harimaya Honten is known. The only stipulation, the company says, is that a4Apeople treat each other with courtesy and respect each other''s views.a4 The cafs are a way for Harimaya Honten to give back to society, it says, as well as to promote environmental awareness, a favourite cause of company president Sukejiro Harimaya. More to the point from a marketing perspective, however, is that they also help the company increase awareness of its products among consumers under 40, it says. Harimaya Honten opened its first Free Caf Harimaya Station in 2008, and it''s planning to expand with additional cafs in Paris and New York. Part tryvertising, part free love and part brand butler catering to weary shoppers, Harimaya''s cafs may just pack more marketing punch than any other tryvertising initiative we''ve seen so far. How could *your* brand achieve something similar...

UpdatedFacebook confirmed today that it&'s launching a deal service that businesses can use to lure in customers. It sounds like a good way for Facebook to make money, but the social network&'s executives said in a press conference that they won&'t charge businesses for the deals. That&'s pretty surprising, since deals are seen as the main way for check-in services like Facebook Places (which includes the deals service), Foursquare, and Gowalla to make money. In an interview after the press conference at Facebook headquarters, Tim Kendall from the company&'s local products team said the new feature should bring in money eventually. After a business creates deals and lists them on Facebook, it &''will naturally want to increase distribution for those deals,&'' so it&'ll buy ads on Facebook.(Update: A Facebook spokesperson just emailed and said that although the deals are free for the program&'s initial launch partners, the pricing could change in the future.)Facebook chief technology officer Bret Taylor said that Facebook didn&'t create the feature to increase advertising. &''The main thing is to improve the user experience around our Places product,&'' he said.So if you&'re thinking about going to a bar, for example, you could open a list of nearby Places. Locations that are offering deals will have a yellow icon next to their names, so you might choose to go to the bar that&'s offering a &''second beer free&'' bargain to users who check in.AllFacebook reported last week that a Facebook deals service was in the works. The initial article focused on promotions where businesses can offer discounts or free products to users who bring in a certain number of friends. Facebook said it will actually offer four different deal structures. Businesses can also reward users for individual check ins or for loyalty (i.e., multiple check ins), and they can offer to donate to charity whenever someone checks in.During the conference, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg seemed to place a particular emphasis on the friend deals &8212' after all, the ability to tag friends, including friends who don&'t normally use check-in services, helps Facebook Places stand out. When I first heard about the deal tagging system, I was concerned that it might lead to lots of fake check ins, but Zuckerberg noted that users need to present their coupons in-person to claim a reward. So it would be hard to claim that you brought three of your friends to the store if you&'re there by yourself.During our interview, Kendall also emphasized the tagging feature: &''We think it&'s a real digital representation of how people discover local businesses offline.&''The deal service is first going live on the Facebook Touch website and the iPhone application. You can see a list of the initial deal partners in this Facebook blog post. Gap, for example, will give free blue jeans to the first 10,000 customers who check in nationwide, while the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain will offer a free screening at whichever location gets the most check ins.Next Story: Could the new GM be a cleantech play Previous Story: Facebook, Twitter analytics successfully predict 2010 election winnersPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Facebook Deals, Facebook PlacesCompanies: FacebookPeople: Mark Zuckerberg, Tim Kendall Tags: Facebook Deals, Facebook PlacesCompanies: FacebookPeople: Mark Zuckerberg, Tim KendallAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
There''s no doubt the content-producing masses like to collaborate, and technology is helping that happen in more ways than ever before. Much the way WEbook helps writers collaborate, Songza lets music fans create shared radio stations and even London''s Royal Opera House has undertaken a crowdsourcing effort via Twitter, so ThumbScribes enables the collaborative creation of virtually any kind of content from just about every type of device. Inspired by chain novels and the 1900s parlour game Exquisite Corpse, New York-based ThumbScribes is a platform for creating collaborative content. Participants on the site, which is now in beta, begin by signing up and then either creating a new a4Ascribea4 a4" or piece of content a4" or joining in on one already started. Haiku, poems, short stories, flash fiction, novellas and songs can all be created asynchronously or in real time on the platform using computers, tablets, cell phones, IM and Twitter. Scribes get passed back and forth among ThumbScribes authors, who add new chapters or sections to the work until it''s completed. They can be kept private and limited to a select set of authors, or they can be opened up to the world. Once a piece of content is completed, it can be published on the site and open to visitors'' votes. Will the crowds ever stop creating and collaborating Never. And will brands ever stop recruiting them for new content Certainly not. Facilitate the process, and you just may find yourself sitting happily in the middle '-)Website: www.thumbscribes.comContact: www.thumbscribes.com/contact/

0 Vote(s)

In addition to adding more functionality to user profile pages, professional social network LinkedIn has been beefing up its Company Profiles on the network, allowing businesses to add a follow option, and include a news feed and career information. The idea behind these features is to encourage companies to add more data to their profiles, which can be useful for professionals looking for job opportunities and for recruiters as well. Today, LinkedIn is adding additional curated information to company pages, products, services and the ability to recommend a company or product. On company pages, administrators can add products and services tab. So an accounting business can showcase various financial services the company offers. LinkedIn is taking it one step further to allow companies to tailor lists of products and services, based on member profiles. So a business owner can showcase one set of products (or services) to accountants in the aviation industry and another to engineers in the shipping industry.Companies can also add videos of products and services to their pages and feature particular products more prominently than others. In turn, LinkedIn members can recommend and review a product or service on a company profile, and their recommendations will surface on their own profiles as well. Company pages will list the people who have recommended a particular product as well. Interestingly, it looks like LinkedIn is using the recommendation technology from mSpoke, which LinkedIn acquired earlier this year. LinkedIn is also revealing that a number of well known companies are using the Pages module, including Dell, HP, JetBlue, Microsoft and E*Trade.
With car sales starting to inch higher and the threat of bankruptcy only faintly visible in the rear-view mirror, Ford is loosening its purse strings once again. On Monday afternoon, the Dearborn, Michigan based company announced that it will invest another $850 million into the development of more fuel efficient cars and technology. That cash, which is earmarked for 2011 to 2013, is still contingent on whether the Michigan Economic Development Council approves a robust package of incentives (due for consideration later this week). According to reportsa4" if the package gets the greenlighta4" Ford will benefit from roughly $400 million in state incentives.Upon passage, Ford plans to create as many as 1,200 jobs across the state concentrating that growth in several key plants, including Van Dyke Transmission, Livonia Transmission, Sterling Axle and its Dearborn Truck Plant.Overall, the goal is to renovate facilities, beef up the workforce and invest in technology that will lead to the production of more fuel efficient cars. In its statement, the automaker says a significant portion of this investment will go towards the production of six-speed transmissions, with the hope that in three years Ford&'s entire fleet will feature the new technology. The company has been trying to make the six-speed transmission more standard, recently making it available in its entire line of full-size pickup trucks. While many cars on the road feature four-speed automatic transmissions, the six-speed is superior when it comes to fuel economy because the extra overdrive gears keeps the engine speed low.For those keeping score, the $850 million investment is in addition to the $950 million Ford has already committed for the overhaul of its Wayne, Michigan Assembly Plant, which will be tasked with churning out many of the company&'s electric and hybrid models in 2012.Although Ford&'s road to recovery has been far from easy (and there&'s still a way to go with consumer remaining fragile), it&'s fared better than its domestic peers. Just last week, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu singled out Ford for recently passing Toyotaa4a4s rating in initial owner defects and its growing traction among consumers (citing a NYTimes article). The automaker, which reports on Tuesday, is expected to showcase encouraging numbers with analysts looking for record (yes, record) third quarter profits of $1.37 billion (versus $997 million for the year ago period). Another quarter in the black will mean a string of six profitable quarters for Ford.CrunchBase InformationFord MotorInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
