If you're a chrome dome and hate shaving your pate, the Shaving Helmet looks like a godsend. It automatically lathers and shaves off your stubble, leaving your scalp smooth as an egg. It takes only 20 seconds and doesn't even leave a scratch--as seen in the video. Too bad it's a well-played hoax. The guys behind it produced an almost credible helmet with moving parts and lights. The inventor Boris, a cue ball himself, gives us some nice techno-babble about "Teflon-coated aluminum rails" and "LED progress indicators." With some camera trickery, they make it look believable. The Huffington Post sure swallowed it. In the video, a man with a bit of scalp hair agrees to demonstrate the helmet. The camera pans to Boris explaining the how it works. When the helmet is taken off the test subject, he has a nicely shaved pate, shaving cream and all. Some readers immediately called it a humbug, suggesting the man who puts on the helmet and the one who takes it off are not the same person. Sure enough, someone has posted a photo of the identical twins who seem to pull a fast one in the vid.You can see them in post 21 on NeoGaf. If you think about it, everyone's cranium has a unique shape, and it would be very tricky to get the blades to automatically shave closely without cutting the scalp. Still, it's a cool idea. A pity it's a canard, because some of my friends could really use a Shaving Helmet. Anyone care to invent a real one and apply for a patent(Via Dvice)

0 Vote(s)

Is the iMac poised for an update in the next six months(Credit:Apple)Apple may be planning to offer new options in its iMac and MacBook Pro lines within the next six months, a report from DigiTimes claims.Citing "sources from upstream component makers," DigiTimes reported today that Apple will offer "a slight change in chassis design" on its MacBook Pro models next year. The sources also told the publication that Apple is planning to introduce a new display size for the iMac, as well as a new price on the all-in-one computer.DigiTimes' report, which should be classified as an absolute rumor until Apple comments, follows earlier evidence that some changes are afoot in Apple's MacBook product line.Last week, sources told CNET that Apple is planning to ditch Nvidia GPUs in the next update to its MacBook line to make way for Intel's Sandy Bridge processors. The sources told CNET that Sandy Bridge processors will be made available in MacBooks that feature 13-inch screen sizes and under. In its larger MacBook Pro models, the sources expect Apple to offer Advanced Micro Devices' GPUs.The Sandy Bridge processor from Intel is notable for being the first of its kind in the "mainstream" market to feature a graphics chip grafted atop a processor. Sandy Bridge is expected to deliver better performance than competing components, potentially making it a fine choice in Apple's refreshed MacBook line.Apple did not immediately respond to request for comment.

0 Vote(s)

Ford said today that its Ford Sync car-computer system is now used in 3 million vehicles in North America. That seems to answer the question about whether Americans will embrace computers in their cars to ease the doldrums of a daily commute and to use technology to make driving easier and safer. Of course, it&'s open to debate as to whether car computers could actually distract drivers from driving. The announcement was made in advance of the keynote speech by Ford chief executive Alan Mulally on Thursday at the Consumer Electronics Show, the big tech show that kicks off on Tuesday in Las Vegas.Sync is a computer system that allows you to control your entertainment and communications in your car using your own voice commands. You can use it to make hands-free calls and switch music. Sync can automatically connect you with a 911 operator if you&'re in a wreck where your air bag deploys. It can read aloud text messages, provide you with driving directions, and give you an update on vehicle maintenance needs. It uses voice recognition from Microsoft.Ford first included Sync as a $395 option in its 2008 Ford Focus cars (launched in the fall of 2007). Today, Sync is available on all Ford and Lincoln cars, except those targeted for commercial or fleet use. Car buyers are opting to pay for Sync about 80 percent of the time on the newest car models. Ford says 80 percent of users recommend it to others, up 5 percent from a year ago.The Consumer Electronics Association, which puts on CES, said in a 2010 study that 55 percent of smartphone owners say they prefer voice commands as their primary means of communicating in a car.Next Story: Facebook hires game executive to direct partnerships Previous Story: Digg founder Kevin Rose embraces emailPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Ford SyncCompanies: fordPeople: Alan Mulally Tags: Ford SyncCompanies: fordPeople: Alan MulallyDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Location-based check-in app Foursquare has released an updated version of its service for RIM&'s BlackBerry smartphones, according to mobile blogCrackberry. However, any excitement by users should be short-lived.The new version, v1.9.10, was releasedearlier this evening, and an issue immediately arose where some usersgot afalse a4Aunable to check-in screen.&'' Checking in, or announcing your location to your friends on the service, is kind of the point of Foursquare. Recognizing the severity of the bug, the company quickly released another version, v1.9.11, to resolve the issue.Foursquare isn&'t out of the woods just yet. According to several BlackBerry commenters on Crackberry, the new version is now leaving a white blank screen when the app is launched. (My girlfriend&'s BlackBerry shows the same behavior.) A Foursquare employee named &''Pete&'' posted on the Crackberry comment thread, saying that the company was looking into the issue and that is should be fixed within 24 hours.Regardless of the bugs, the new version does have a few upgrades worth noting, includingimproved tip and to-do management, ability to call a business from the venue page and improved battery life and performance. Regardless of the updates, it appears BlackBerry users are once again left wanting more. It&'s tempting to blame the app developer in these situations. But given the complaints we&'ve heard about BlackBerry versions of popular apps like Foursquare, we&'re wondering if RIM&'s aging platform and inconsistencies in behavior from device to device aren&'t equally to blame.Foursquare, based in New York City and founded in 2009, has raised more than $21 million in funding. It currently has more than40 employees in its hometown and a new engineering office ita4a4s opening in San Francisco.Previous Story: Get ready to fondle your Microsoft Touch MousePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Blackberry, BlackBerry OS, bugs, check-in, location based services, location-basedCompanies: Foursquare, Research In Motion, RIM Tags: Blackberry, BlackBerry OS, bugs, check-in, location based services, location-basedCompanies: Foursquare, Research In Motion, RIMCody Barbierri is a social and digital media consultant.
TargetSpot, a provider of advertising for online radio services, announced today that it has raised $8 million in its most recent round of fundraising. The network is geared toward music radio services like CBS Radio and Yahoo Music. Advertisers can purchase 5-, 15- and 30-second spots for online radio networks through TargetSpot. Those ads are streamed through TargetSpot&'s software to each online radio service. The company has its own advertising serving technology and gives each advertiser the tools to drop an ad directly into one of their distribution partner&'s audio streams. In addition to running the ads, TargetSpot is able to track what kind of listener is tuning in and can tailor the ad accordingly. TargetSpot can track where the listener is geographically, what kind of radio service they are running and what type of music they are listening to, and hand that information off to advertisers that want to develop a better targeted advertising package.TargetSpot CEO Eyal Goldwerer estimates there are roughly 70 million people listening to online radio services. That number probably isn&'t too far off, as Pandora announced it passed the 50-million user mark last April and there are a host of other music-streaming services like Grooveshark and MySpace Music on top of that. The company plans to use the newest funding to expand its analytics suite and make it easier for advertisers to deliver better targeted advertising, Goldwerer said. He also said the company planned to increase the size of its sales force. The New York, N.Y.-based company was founded four years ago. It acquired Ronning Lipset Radio, another advertising firm, to become one of the largest radio-centric advertising firms in 2008. Its investors includeUnion Square Ventures, Bain Capital Ventures, CBS Radio and Milestone Venture Partners.Next Story: App developers: Show us what you&'ve got for VentureBeata4a4s Mobile App Spotlight Previous Story: Foursquare explains itself better to businesses and brandsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: advertising, online radioCompanies: Bain Capital Ventures, CBS Radio, Milestone Venture Partners, MySpace Music, Targetspot, Union Square Ventures, Yahoo MusicPeople: Eyal Goldwerer Tags: advertising, online radioCompanies: Bain Capital Ventures, CBS Radio, Milestone Venture Partners, MySpace Music, Targetspot, Union Square Ventures, Yahoo MusicPeople: Eyal GoldwererMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Women now play games more than men, according to a report by mobile app analytics provider Flurry. At least that&'s true in the realm of mobile and mobile social games, where the likes of Zynga&'s FarmVille and Popcap&'s Plants vs. Zombies are at the forefront.More than half of all mobile and mobile social gamers a4" 53 percent, to be exact a4" are women, bucking the stereotype that gaming is typically a male-dominated form of entertainment, according to the report. Only 40 percent of &''traditional&'' gamers are women, according to the report. The report found that women social gamers were typically older than their male counterparts a4" as women outnumbered men in the 26 to 65 age range. Men barely outnumbered women in the 18 to 24 age range. Just about a third of all mobile and social gamers were also in that same age range a4" 18 to 24 a4" while about half of mobile and social gamers fell in the 26 to 44 age range.A majority of mobile and social gamers also appear to come from middle-class origins and make between $50,000 and $80,000 yearly, according to the report. Mobile and social gamers typically earn 50 percent more than the average American and are twice as likely to have a college bachelor&'s degree. The majority of mobile and social gamers a4" about 65 percent a4" are white, as well.Flurry detected more than 250 million devices running Apple&'s iPhone operating system and Google&'s Android mobile operating system, and detects around 750,000 new activations across both operating systems each day, according to the report. Flurry tracks around 26 million unique users that play social games for an average of about 25 minutes each day.[Photo: popculturegeek.com]Next Story: Google yanks request for kids&' social security numbers Previous Story: On the GreenBeat: Khosla strikes back at WSJ, Gevo served a suit by BP and DuPont JVPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: CityVille, Farmville, girl gamers, mobile, mobile games, Plants vs. Zombies, social games, social gaming, Social networksCompanies: Apple, Facebook, Flurry, Google, Popcap, Zynga Tags: CityVille, Farmville, girl gamers, mobile, mobile games, Plants vs. Zombies, social games, social gaming, Social networksCompanies: Apple, Facebook, Flurry, Google, Popcap, ZyngaMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
