If you see this post on Facebook, don&39't click on it.Facebook users are being duped into unwittingly spreading spam by clicking on what looks like a link to news entitled "First Exposure:iPhone 5." A version of the scam, exploiting peoples' interest in the next-generation iPhone, went around Facebook earlier this month, and it's back today with minor changes. The scam starts when you see someone in your social network comment on a link in a post that looks like it leads to a news story about the iPhone 5 at a Web address of "greatlakesnews.info." Clicking on the link takes you to a different Web page, which provides a captcha window where you're asked to verify a word, ostensibly to prove that you are not an automated bot. Once you click to verify, a message is posted to your Facebook stream notifying all your friends that you commented on the item and providing them with the bogus iPhone 5 link, in a type of attack known as "clickjacking." Then you're asked to choose from a list of items that then lead to a survey which is really marketing, according to this M86 post. Clickjacking can be a problem on any Web site, but social networks are particularly susceptible because people share so many links. Facebook's advice to not click on strange links even if they are from friends would cut out many of the legitimate links people share on Facebook. It's good idea to try to avoid getting news from sources that aren't known news sites. But a big red flag is the captcha window--legitimate sites don't typically make you prove you're human to read a news item.

0 Vote(s)

An alleged screenshot of the new service on an Amazon product page.(Credit:Engadget)Rumors have been heating up over the last few weeks that Amazon was on the verge of offering "free," unlimited video streaming to its Prime members, who pay $79.99 a year for free two-day shipping on many items sold on Amazon. Now a tipster has sent a few screenshots to Engadget allegedly showing an unlimited video streaming section to complement Amazon's VOD (video-on-demand) offerings.Whether someone at Amazon accidentally jumped the gun on the launch is unclear, but the section has now disappeared along with the "Watch now," free unlimited streaming button (I have an Amazon Prime subscription and nothing like this showed up for me).Back in November one of our non-Amazon contacts mentioned the possibility of such a service in an off-the-record conversation and on December 6, the Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon.com was developing a Netflix-like subscription service that would offer TV shows and movies. According to people "familiar with the matter," that service "would be included as a bundle with its Amazon Prime shipping service."From the screenshot it appears the selection would be pretty similar to Netflix's Watch Instantly service and would feature "unlimited, commercial-free, instant streaming of 5,000 movies and TV shows at no additional cost." According to Engadget's tipster, the resolution is limited to "pretty solid" 480p (standard-definition). To be clear, none of this information is confirmed, but we'll have a full review of the service if and when Amazon decides to launch it. It's worth pointing out that Netflix's Watch Instantly service costs $95.88 a year, which comes out to a little more than $15 over an Amazon Prime subscription. However, Netflix's streaming service is currently available on more set-top boxes and mobile devices, so Amazon would have some catch-up to do in that department. One small bit of info a lot of people don't know about is that Amazon allows Amazon Prime subscribers to share their subscriptions with up to three "family members." (See full article here). Whether Amazon would extend the "free" streaming service to those you share your membership with is unknown, but it would certainly be a nice perk.
General Electric's decision to acquire Lineage Power Holdings reflects the growing importance of power electronics amid the explosive growth of portable computers and phones. GE is buying Lineage Power to get access to its power electronics equipment aimed at telecom and data center operators.(Credit:Lineage Power)GE yesterday said it has signed a deal to pay about $520 million for Atlanta-based Lineage Power to beef up its energy and electric grid-related portfolio. It gives GE efficient power-conversion products--the hardware needed to convert between alternating current and direct current--used by telecommunications companies and data center operators. "Every new mobile device plugs into an infrastructure that requires an ever increasing amount of high-quality power. The growth in high-bandwidth mobile Internet applications and cloud computing is accelerating that demand," Dan Heintzelman, GE Energy Services CEO, said in a statement. Lineage makes equipment for converting power in computing and networking products, including batteries, power distribution units, and AC-DC power supplies. Its equipment is optimized for efficiency and can work with alternative energy sources, such as fuel cells and wind and solar, according to the company. The company said its products reduce energy loss from AC-to-DC conversions and lower the cooling costs in data centers and telecom infrastructure, such as cell phone towers. Demand for its equipment is poised to grow as more smartphones, e-books, andtablet computers connect to the Internet over 3G and 4G networks, Lineage Power CEO Craig Witsoe said in a statement. The acquisition follows previous investments GE has made in companies developing software to make data centers more efficient. But GE executives have singled out power electronics as a technology and expertise that it needs more of across the board in its energy business.

0 Vote(s)

The new i-Disk Rex100 could be the tiniest USB 3.0 flash drive in the world that offers 128GB of storage.(Credit:Pretec)LAS VEGAS--It seems that portable hard drives get progressively smaller asCES 2011 continues.Yesterday, Verbatim introduced the USB 3.0 External SSD that beat the recently reviewed LaCie FastKey both in terms of storage space and portability. Now, as the show is nearing its end, Pretec, a company known more as a maker of system memory, unveiled an ultracompact USB 3.0 flash drive of its own, the i-Disk Rex100. Measuring 2.9 inches by 0.7 inch by 0.2 inch, the i-Disk Rex100 is arguably the tiniest flash drive in the world that offers 128GB of storage space. The drive supports USB 3.0, which translates into much better performance compared with USB 2.0 flash drives. It shares the same design as the LaCie FastKey, taking the shape of a thumbdrive, but about is 40 percent smaller. The i-Disk Rex100 is available later this month in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB capacities. The price has not yet been announced, but like all SSD-based external hard drives, it won't be cheap.Other than the i-Disk100, Pretec also unveiled the i-Disk300, a superthin SSD-based USB 3.0 external drive that offers up to 128GB of storage, and the first USB 3.0 flash card reader, the Pretec P240.

The Federal Communications Commission is set to vote on official Net neutrality rules tomorrow, which the agency claims will provide consumers, service providers, device makers, and application developers clear rules of the road for the Internet. With the support of all three Democrats on the FCC, the regulation is set to pass. And the vote will mark the next step in what has been a politically charged debate between telephone and cable companies and consumer groups advocating for a free and open Internet. The five-member commission, which is made up of three Democrats and two Republicans, has been working on developing these official rules of the road for more than a year. In September 2009, Chairman Julius Genachowski suggested adding to the original Internet Openness principles adopted by the commission under former Chairman Michael Powell. The debate of what should be included in the new rules has raged ever since. Democratic supporters and consumer advocates along with some Internet companies have pushed for more stringent regulations. Meanwhile, Congressional Republicans and major telephone and cable companies have lobbied for lighter regulation.Genachowski, who offered a preview of the plan earlier this month, has attempted to give each side a little of what it wants in the new rules, but neither camp has said they are completely satisfied. In fact, the two Democrats on the commission, Michael Copps and Mignon Clyburn, have been reluctant to go along with the chairman's plan because they believe it may be too favorable to major broadband providers. But FCC officials say the chairman has worked closely with these commissioners to satisfy their concerns. And now it looks as though the two Democrats will support the new rules, albeit somewhat reluctantly.Clyburn released a statement today stating she will vote in favor of the new rules. Copps also said he'd vote for the rules, but in a statement today he noted that he believes things are missing from the order. "While I cannot vote wholeheartedly to approve the item, I will not block it by voting against it. I instead plan to concur so that we may move forward," Copps said in a statement.Meanwhile, Republican Commissioner Robert McDowell, who has long opposed Net neutrality regulation, said in an op-ed for The Wall Street Journal on Monday that the new rules are trying to fix a problem that doesn't exist. "On this winter solstice, we will witness jaw-dropping interventionist chutzpah as the FCC bypasses branches of our government in the dogged pursuit of needless and harmful regulation," McDowell wrote. "The darkest day of the year may end up marking the beginning of a long winter's night for Internet freedom."He went on to say:"Nothing is broken and needs fixing, however. The Internet has been open and freedom-enhancing since it was spun off from a government research project in the early 1990s. Its nature as a diffuse and dynamic global network of networks defies top-down authority. Ample laws to protect consumers already exist. Furthermore, the Obama Justice Department and the European Commission both decided this year that Net neutrality regulation was unnecessary and might deter investment in next-generation Internet technology and infrastructure."Senior representatives from the FCC held a press conference this afternoon to provide an overview of what the order will actually say. At a high level, there are three provisions that will become official FCC regulation. The first rule is about transparency. Network operators of both fixed and wireless networks will be required to disclose to consumers, content providers, and device makers information that will be necessary for them to deploy services. In other words, if a broadband network operator is using network management techniques that affect an application or if a wireless broadband network provider doesn't allow a certain type of application, the service provider must provide information about the requirements for its network. The second Net neutrality rule prohibits the blocking of traffic on the Internet. The rule applies to both fixed wireline broadband network operators, as well as to wireless providers. But the stipulations for each type of network are slightly different. For wired networks, operators will not be allowed to block any lawful content, services, applications, or devices on their network. For wireless providers, the rule is somewhat limited and only prohibits the blocking of access to Web sites or applications that specifically compete with a carrier's telephony voice or video services. The blocking rule for wireless and wireline networks also includes allowances for reasonable network management. This means that wireline and wireless broadband providers will be able to reasonably manage their networks during times of congestion to ensure every user can adequately access services. And finally, the last rule applies only to fixed broadband providers. It prohibits fixed wireline broadband providers from unreasonably discriminating against traffic on their network. Net neutrality zealots have already expressed dismay in Copps' support of the new rules."Internet users across America will have lost a hero if Commissioner Copps caves to pressure from big business and supports FCC Chairman Genachowski's fake Net neutrality rules--rules written by AT&T, Comcast, and Verizon, the very companies the public is depending on the FCC to regulate strongly," Jason Rosenbaum, the senior online campaigns director for the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, said in a statement. But not everyone is upset that a compromise appears to have been reached.Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.), released a statement today applauding the three Democratic commissioners for reaching a consensus on the rules. "While he (Commissioner Copps) and Commissioner Clyburn, as well as many of the champions of network neutrality, including myself, would have supported a stricter order, I commend them for rising to the moment and making possible very meaningful progress to preserve the freedom to communicate and compete over the Internet," he said in the statement. "I also join them in commending Chairman Genachowski for his inclusive, thoughtful, and creative work in bringing parties together, airing all points of view, and finding a principled center."The FCC meeting will be broadcast live starting at 10:30 a.m. ET.

0 Vote(s)

If you were a famous violinist who happened to carry a $1.9 million Stradivarius around with you, it would surely be hard to concentrate on anything else.Unless, perhaps, there was aniPhone in the vicinity. You might be familiar with the new ad campaign for Windows Phone (they've dropped the "7" in the ads, as it confused people). This would be the campaign in which people look very silly because they're staring into their iPhones (presumed) all day instead of, say, paying attention to their scantily clad lovers.Perhaps Min-Jin Kym, being a well-traveled concert violinist from South Korea, hasn't had the chance to see these ads. Someone who works in a London sandwich shop might suggest to her that she should. You see, according to the Daily Mail, Kim was passing through London's Euston railway station, when she stopped at Pret A Manger sandwich shop (expensive, but a lot better than Subway) for sustenance. The snowy station where the theft allegedly took place.(Credit:CC Snappa2006/Flickr)She placed her more than 300-year-old Strad on the ground for but a few moments, or so it seemed. However, these were enough moments for the Strad to be had.Thieves allegedly wafted off with the case containing the precious violin and two very precious bows. Kim didn't own the Strad, and the company that insures the violin is offering a reward for its recovery. However, Hafid Salah, who was working in Pret A Manger when the theft took place, offered the Mail a most contemporary perspective on the theft.Speaking of Kim, he said: "She and her friend were on computers and iPhones and not looking at their bags."Microsoft's VP of mobile, Joe Belfiore, was today rather reluctant to suggest that Windows Phone was selling well. Surely, then, the alleged theft of the Stradivarius will, if Salah's telling is accurate, offer Belfiore renewed faith that people will soon, very soon, or at least eventually realize that they need Windows Phones in order to pay attention to their loved ones and their other valuables. Before those pesky, all-encompassing iPhones suck people entirely into their beautiful and cunning vortex.

0 Vote(s)

We take a break from Black Friday pandemonium for our Friday Poll.So it's Black Friday, and we're sure you're going crazy pushing through insane lines while digesting lots and lots of turkey. But while this time of year is about snagging deals, it's also about gratitude, and in the spirit of yesterday's holiday, we're going to talk about things we're thankful for. I, of course, am grateful for family, friends, and writing for Crave, but my favorite tech turn of the year is my iPad. Yes, we've dedicated many pixels of text to Apple's device, but that's because many of us think it's that good. I use mine about 80 percent of the time, which gives my MacBook a rest. This week's iOS 4.2 update makes the gadget that much better (though there are still some things the OS can't do on the iPad that we wish it could). In any case, not everyone's giving thanks for theiPad this year. Many are stoked about the coming of the Windows Phone 7 devices. Others are stoked about Android-based tablets. Still more are into the Google TV. But what about you We'd like to know what you, Crave readers, are thankful for. Vote in the poll, and be sure to share additional thoughts in the comments section. Then get back to shopping!

0 Vote(s)

The Teac CR-H500NT stereo receiver/CDplayer.(Credit:Teac)Matthew Moskovciak recently wrote about AV receivers that play nice with iPods, but what about stereo receiversTeac now offers not one, but twoiPod-friendly stereo receivers, the Reference Series AG-H380 ($499) and the Reference Series CR-H500NT ($799).The CR-H500NT is a CD player/stereo (2x40 watts) receiver, and also offers Internet radio, an Ethernet port, wired and wireless LANs, high-quality phono input, subwoofer output, and best of all, a USB iPod Digital Direct Interface. So instead of using your iPod's good-enough internal digital-to-analog converter, you'll be listening to the CR-H500NT's higher-quality 24-bit/192-kHz converters, which will significantly upgrade your iPod's sound. Teac's converters are highly regarded by audiophiles, and the CR-H500NT has been favorably reviewed by a number of high-end audio magazines. The CR-H500NT measures a compact 11.5 inches by 4.4 inches by 13.3 inches, and it weighs 12.4 pounds. The AG-H380 is much the same, but it lacks the CD player. It's even smaller, just 8.5 inches by 4.3 inches by 12.8 inches, and it weighs 9.7 pounds. Both receivers would work wonders in two-channel home theaters.
eBay&39's revamps its home page.(Credit:eBay)eBay is getting ready for the holidays with a new take on its home page and a new shared gift-giving feature. The auction site refreshed its home page yesterday with the goal of helping people find and buy items more quickly and easily. The redesign, which eBay said was months in the making, offers a different look and feel to the home page as well as several behind-the-scenes changes.eBay's search functionality is trying to be smarter by pushing the exact product you're seeking to the top of the results. You can also now find an item by browsing across a variety of different product categories without leaving the home page. eBay has given its new page more of a personal touch as well. You can glance at your watched and recently-viewed items, the latest search results, and a list of products recommended just for you.The enhancements to the search tool and the product catalog borrowed a page from eBay's mobile apps, which have already adopted a more user-friendly approach to these features. Beyond those changes, the new page is trying to draw in people and drum up business by highlighting daily deals and tracking shopping trends. The revamp itself was prompted by requests from both sellers and shoppers, eBay said, and included input from eBay's Chief Technology Officer Mark Carges. The home page "has a great look and feel," Hugh Williams, eBay's vice president of search engineering, said in an eBay internal interview. It's more personalized too. For example, you can sift through searches you recently did, and explore hot, trending products."Beyond the home page redesign, eBay is also trying to make holiday gift giving a bit more social. The company rolled out its new Group Gifts feature yesterday, an attempt to let people share in the costs of buying the right present for family or friends. Any shopper with a Facebook account can invite others to contribute to the cost of a fixed-price (non-auction) item on eBay, with people able to pay via PayPal or credit card. When the full amount of the item is covered, the gift can then be sent to the buyer or directly to the recipient. The "crowdsourcing" approach to buying a gift can help people collectively pick up an expensive present that they normally couldn't afford individually. And by connecting eBay to Facebook, the Group Gifts feature can tap into information from the recipient's Facebook page to suggest gift ideas, according to eBay. "eBay Group Gifts was designed to address a real world need for people who want to join together to give a bigger and better gift for someone they care about," Amit Menipaz, who led the project at eBay, said in a statement. "Through this innovative application we are defining the concept of group gifting online by leveraging deep integration with eBay, PayPal, and Facebook to provide a simple and friendly solution that addresses every stage of the process."

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)With its simple styling, the 2010 Challenger is an excellent take on a classic Dodge musclecar. But more impressive here is the update to the driving tech. Boasting 425 horsepower in SRT trim, the Challenger is surprisingly drivable. It does equally well crawling through a parking lot or blasting down a country road. Far less back-breaking than other modern muscle cars, it exhibits European refinement in ride quality.Tech-wise, it looks a little rough, but it is feature rich. We didn't like using the graphical interface for the navigation system, but voice command worked very well.iPod and phone integration also did their jobs.Check out our full 2010 Dodge Challenger SRT8 review.

0 Vote(s)

Alma Whitten is taking on one of Google's most important and perhaps impossible jobs as the face of its commitment to privacy.Google&39's Alma Whitten, director of privacy(Credit:Google) Whitten, a seven-year Google engineer with a background in privacy and security, was named director of privacy for the company Friday in a blog post in which Google acknowledged that its Wi-Fi spying debacle had snared e-mail addresses and passwords. Already leading a team focused on privacy issues, she's now getting more resources and a lot more responsibility in hopes of preventing incidents like the Wi-Fi issue from happening again and convincing the public that Google takes privacy seriously. In an interview with CNET today, Whitten stressed that "my responsibility is to drive privacy from within product and engineering, and that encompasses whatever it needs to encompass." She will report to Jonathan Rosenberg, senior vice president for product management, and Bill Coughran, senior vice president of engineering. Privacy is a touchy area for Google, a company with an inexhaustible thirst for the data it believes it needs to solve the information engineering problems of the world. Google says it has safeguards in place to protect the data that it collects and that users willingly provide it, but systems are fallible, as Google has proved twice this year with the Wi-Fi scandal and the firing of David Barksdale, an engineer who abused his authority to break into the Gmail and Google Voice accounts of children in the Seattle area. In the blog post announcing Whitten's appointment, Google said it would be increasing the amount of training its employees receive on privacy issues and put in place new processes for reviewing its products based on privacy-related criteria. Whitten's job will be to monitor the execution of these policies across Google's massive array of products, from Android and Chrome to Gmail and YouTube. "We're really trying to have something that's going to be broad but targeted where appropriate," Whitten told CNET today. She won't necessarily have veto power over certain product features that her team judges to cross a privacy line, but she will have access to leaders of those product groups to argue her case for removing a troubling line of code or tweaking a default setting, for example. Those leaders will have to go through additional reviews before their team can ship products, she said, having to sign off on what kind of personal data their product uses, how it is collected, and what plans are in store for that data. The goal is to provide "enough checks and balances that we should catch just about everything," but Whitten admitted there's no way Google will ever be able to catch everything. But what will Whitten really be able to accomplish Some in the privacy community are likely to see her appointment as a public-relations stunt designed to thwart critics, and it's not clear how much authority she'll be able to wield in internal disputes with leaders of important projects. That leads to the second part of her job: outreach to the privacy community and the public. "There's a lot of onus on us to find a way to be Stephen Jay Gould and explain (our approach to data). Mysteriousness is frightening to people," she said, referring to the scientist known for his frequent essays on evolutionary theory.Whitten is based in London, and plans to continue operating out of that office even though most of Google's engineering teams sit eight time zones away in California. Google has faced stronger criticism in Europe than it has at home, due in part to the fact that many Europeans believe "privacy is a fundamental human right," she said. She thinks there is value in living and traveling readily around Europe to better understand those concerns, with the ability to draw upon five years of experience working in Mountain View to manage connections to Googlers at home and make sure she's in contact with the right people inside the company. Whitten also plans to further encourage Google to fund research into privacy at colleges and universities. For example, Google has funded research by Ryan Calo of Stanford University on new and better ways of presenting privacy decisions to technology users and research at Cambridge University in the U.K. on privacy issues with crowdsourced data. But she's also likely to be the public figure that Google turns to when it has to defend itself against privacy advocates or regulators concerned about the company's practices, which could make for some pressure-packed moments before investigators, hostile conferences, and even fellow employees who might see her as a Googly version of the internal affairs bureau. Whitten's work at Google is only going to become more vital to the company's future as time goes on. She brought up internal discussions about Google Goggles, and the conscious decision the company made to avoid building face-recognition features from the product even though the technology was available. "It's more and more the case that every individual is going around with a cheap yet powerful data-capture device, and the ability to connect that device to powerful data services. There's a whole interesting minefield to be picked through," she said, noting that it's useless to develop privacy philosophies and practices for the present: future considerations must be addressed. Whitten also made it clear, however, that her role is not to stand in the way of Google's experiments with new technology. "We need to stay an ambitious company," she said. "We need to build powerful information tools that are equally available to everyone, and if we are sufficiently transparent about (those tools and how they usedata), then the outside world gets to say, yes, it's worth it, we want those tools."

0 Vote(s)

Plenty of writers have weighed in on who was the true winner at the South by Southwest Interactive conference, which wrapped up in Austin last week. Now the team behind a mobile question-and-answer app called Opinionaided is joining the debate. How did Opinionaided choose the most popular apps at SXSW It asked its users about their impressions of each service. Now, this methodology may seem a little weird to you (it does to me), because this was not a survey of SXSW attendees. Instead, the Opinionaided team looked at the apps that seemed to be getting the most buzz at the event and asked its own user base their opinion of each app. A company spokesman told me the goal was to see a4Awhich apps at SXSW resonated with app users not necessarily part of SXSWi&'s demographica4.Is that actually valuable to gauge an appa4a4s success Maybe not (download numbers at the conference, and information about how many of those downloads converted to regular users, would be more useful) but hey, ita4a4s interesting. And according to the Opinionaided community, photo-sharing app Instagram and food-recommendation app Foodspotting stood head-and-shoulders above the rest, as you can see in the image above.Opinionaideda4a4s parent company Kurani Interactive has raised $1.2 million in funding from $1.2 million in seed funding from venture capitalists General Catalyst, SoftBank Capital, Draper Fisher Jurveston, and various angels.Next Story: Amazon launches Android Appstore with 3,800 apps Previous Story: Top 10 Reasons not to miss Web 2.0 Expo this yearPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: sxswCompanies: Foodspotting, Instagram, Opinionaided Tags: sxswCompanies: Foodspotting, Instagram, OpinionaidedAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Back in 1961, Steve Russell was toying around with electronics at the Tech Model Railroad Club at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He created a game called Spacewar!, an early computer game that ignited interest in computer video games. Over time, Russell&'s invention spawned copycat games such as Computer Space, Space War, and Asteroids. The latter was a huge hit in the arcades.Russell wrote the first two versions of the game in Lisp for the IBM 704 computer. We caught up with him at the opening of the $19 million Revolution exhibit at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. (The exhibit opens to the public on Thursday). Russell has a working version of the game running on a Digital Equipment Corp. PDP-1.He noted that it took the contributions of just four people to come up with Spacewar! That&'s far different from the modern age of video games, which often require teams of 100 or 200 people. Russell&'s work preceded that of pioneers such as Nolan Bushnell and Al Alcorn, who made the first big commercial successes in video games. In Spacewar!, you fly one of two space ships &8212' the Needle and the Wedge &8212' that attack each other as they orbit a sun. The ships feel the sun&'s gravitational effect as they move near it. The missiles fired from the space ships don&'t have a gravitational effect, for lack of memory. That&'s why Russell decided that they were photon torpedoes, or light energy pulses, which aren&'t subject to gravity. The game is just 2,000 lines of machine language. It uses about half of the available 18-bit words of the 4,000 words of memory in the Digital PDP-1 minicomputer that the game runs on. Here&'s our video interview with Russell, who noted that he didn&'t really cash in big on the whole video game phenomenon, which now generates $21 billion in sales per year in the U.S.Next Story: Indie sandbox game Minecraft racks up 1 million sales sans a publisher Previous Story: Who&'s afraid of young startups An increasing number of venture capitalistsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Asteroids, Spacewar!Companies: Computer History MuseumPeople: Steve Russell Tags: Asteroids, Spacewar!Companies: Computer History MuseumPeople: Steve RussellDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
The hot spot in startups is where social networks, mobile phones, and targeted advertising collide. Services which let users record their location and broadcast it to their friends are blooming. The largest service, Foursquare, has more than 4 million users. Facebook has jumped on the bandwagon and is exposing the idea of location to 500 million people on its social network. And venture capitalists have poured tens of millions of dollars into top startups. And businesses like the Gap and Starbucks are keenly interested in using location services to guide customers to their stores.Yet the industry&'s still at a nascent stage, with business models unsettled and its future direction unmapped. At this point, location startups are very much driven by the personalities of their founders, whose enthusiastic use of their own products has helped shape the community springing up around them. So VentureBeat assigned Cody Barbierri to profile the people behind five top location startups: Booyah, Foursquare, Gowalla, Loopt, and Scvngr. What he found is instructive. Scvngr&'s Seth Priebatsch pointed out how a user of Scvngr&'s location game found him on Facebook &8212' but identified him as just another player, not the guy behind it all. That may be a sign that location is achieving escape velocity into society at large, boosted by these pioneers into pop-cultural prevalence. But for now, we still think it&'s worth checking in with five key players who are building this business.VentureBeat&'s Local Heroes series is sponsored by Adobe and is also available as an Adobe Acrobat X Pro portfolio.
Here&'s some of the latest action we&'re following on the GreenBeat today:Energy management firm Schneider buys D5X and Vizelia &8212' Many analysts and venture capitalists are predicting that a hot sector next year in cleantech will be in building controls, but it looks like the game is already afoot: Yesterday, energy management leader Schneider Electric announced that it bought two French energy software firms. D5X makes software that optimizes the use of commercial space, while Vizelia&'s software allows for real-time energy monitoring of buildings.Chinese carmaker BYD to launch an electric car in the U.S. &8212' The Warren Buffet-backed company plans to start test-marketing the e6 next year, according to the Wall Street Journal, and will make it available to buyers by 2012. It is also in talks to supply electric buses and potentially build a manufacturing plant in Los Angeles. BYD&'s U.S. electric car plans were delayed a year, and the companyreportedly canceled electric car plans in China due to lukewarm sales of its hybrid there &8212' lack of charging infrastructure was partly to blame. BYD has also been stretching itself into product offerings in the home energy efficiency market.Russia to launch gas-electric hybrid car &8212' Russia&'s first gas-electric hybrid car will be called the Yo and get about 67 miles per gallon &8212' better than the Toyota Prius, the New York Times reports. The Yo will be powered by an engine that can burn gasoline or natural gas and is backed solely by Russian billionaire Mikhail D. Prokhorov, owner of the New Jersey Nets. Prokhorov plans to invest about $200 million into a company called e-Auto to manufacture the Yo.Solar market may be getting overheated &8212' This year was a good one for solar, with industry-wide capacity doubling, driving up the stocks and forecasts of solar inverter companies like Power-One &8212' and global demand is expected to grow 13 percent next year, the Wall Street Journal writes. But subsidies in the powerhouse market of Germany are cooling off and rising euro-zone bond yields are hurting the economics of solar financing in the region. Solar companies will likely feel a squeeze on margins and pricing next year, the WSJ reports.Soladigm raises $30 million for self-tinting glass &8211' The company announced its third round of funding today, led by DBL Investors and Nano Dimension. It plans to use the cash to kick its $130 million factory in Mississippi into high-volume production. Soladigm makes energy-efficient glass that can be used to create smart windows that automatically adjust tint throughout the day to reduce glare and cut heating and cooling bills.[Image via Flickr/electricnude]Next Story: Another delay for Nokia: E7 smartphone pushed to early 2011 Previous Story: Google drops bank in RelayRides to turn your car into a ZipcarPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: building controls, China, electric cars, electrochormics, energy efficiency, energy management software, smart windows, Solar, YoCompanies: BYD, D5X, e-auto, Power One, Schneider, Schneider Electric, Soladigm, VizeliaPeople: Mikhail D.
Google has been ramping up its product search and advertising efforts just in time for the holidays. Case in point: At Web 2.0 Summit Google VP of Product Management Susan Wojcicki challenged herself to demo the 5 pretty important Google ad products the company&'s released in the past two months or so, in under 10 minutes.Wojcicki insisted that umbrella theme of all these launches was merging both the online and offline shopping worlds.a4sTo mirror the brevity of Wojcicki&'s presentation, here is a laundry list of Google&'s most recent ad related efforts, below:1. &''In Stock Nearby&'' Now you can search and receive information directly from local stores to see what&'s available and where.2. &''Hyperlocal Mobile SEM&'' New ad integration shows users distance to the advertisera4a4s business or location as well as the advertiser&'s phone number.3. &''Google Shopper Updates&'' &8212' Google Shopper, the Google mobile shopping app, now shows you reviews as well as allows you to scan barcodes.4. &''Google Goggles Print Ad Integration&'' &8211'a4sLinks ads in magazines (offline) with online information and sites.5. &''Google Ads Call Tracking Analytics&'' &8212' Advertisers can now track how many phone calls come in to through Google search, through Google&'s own system.Wojcicki brought up multiple times that most people still think of online shopping and offline shopping as different channels and that Google is trying (really hard) to technologically change this perception. While 42% of in-store sales are motivated by online shopping searches according to Wojcicki, a4s7% of purchasing is currently done online while 93% is still done in IRL stores.Google very very obviously wants to be a point of control on that other 93%, see above.CrunchBase InformationGoogleInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Obviously, there is a lot of pent-up demand for the Beatles on iTunes. Decades after their last album, they were still the third best-selling music group last year, and that was without any digital sales. Since going live on iTunes for the first time this morning, all 17 albums are currently in the top 100 best selling albums on iTunes. And 15 of them are in the top 50.The best selling Beatles album is Abbey Road, currently at No. 12, followed by the White Album (no. 14), Sgt. Pepper&'s (No. 15), and the $149 Box set (No. 16), and moving up the charts fast. The least popular Beatles albums Yellow Submarine (No. 72) and Beatles Fior Sale (No. 57).In contrast, only 6 of the top 100 songs on iTunes are from the Beatles. &''Here Comes The Sun&'' (No. 53), &''Let It Be&'' (No. 56), &''Blackbird&'' (No. 67), &''In My Life&'' (No. 69), &''Come Together&'' (No. 89), &''and &''With A Little Help From My Friends&'' (No. 97). People are definitely buying the albums instead of singles. This kind of impulse buying is to be expected on the first day the Beatles are available, especially with all the media coverage around the sale of these albums. But will a Beatles album take the top spot before the week is out And how many of these will remain in the top 100 through the holidaysCrunchBase InformationiTunesInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Touch interfaces for content and social media are, thanks to applications like Pulse and Flipboard &8211' the &8216'new new thing&'. They are presenting streams of information in a far easier to digest manner and generating lots of engagement. Think how long you might spend on an app like Tweetdeck and then work out what would happen if that way of consuming went even more mainstream, especially on tablets like the iPad.Well this appears to be the ambition of a new free Android and iPhone app which launches today, My Taptu, and will appear on iPad in due course. It&'s also part of the re-invention of its maker, Taptu, which has until now specialised in mobile search and touch-based interfaces for mobile, but is now bringing that expertise to bear on an app which promises to organise your social and content streams in a highly scalable way. And they appear to have the firepower. Currently Pulse only lets you add 20 streams to the app, while Flipboard allows for 21 &8216'sections&'. My Taptu will let users have have 5000 mixed streams. That is a huge difference. Taptu could well have a chance against Flipboard and Pulse with its new app when it eventually launches on iPad in December.Although billed as a new social news aggregator, the difference here is that they appear to have mashed up a little of the interface magic and RSS capabilities of Pulse with the social elements of Flipboard, at least after a fashion. The ability to bring in realtime social streams like Twitter and Facebook are limited to RSS for now until the next version launches in a few weeks.Users can add single streams from content publishers and mixed topic streams via Taptu itself. For instance, the technology news &8216'stream&' might take news from TechCrunch, Venture Beat, the NYTa4ss Bits Blog, GigaOm and the FT.com. (This called a Folder in my book). But a clever aspect is the ability to watch content stream in from sites that do not have a RSS feed &8211' especially useful for many fashion retail sites for instance. Taptu has also created a &8216'Stream Store&' of suggested feeds where you can add streams by clicking on trending topics and by searching for them. You add RSS feeds if Taptu has found them, and it has found a lot. You can also recommend, manage and share the streams.Does it pull in content from my twitter friends like Flipboard Not yet. Self-curation and sharing will drop in a few weeks. While the app claims to integrate Social Streams, I found this limited. I could only add my own Twitter stream via searching for it inside the app and then it was clearly just picking up my Twitter account&'s RSS feed not the realtime stream. But I&'m assured this is poised to become much easier following this initial launch. &''The first release is all about content&'' I&'m told. For now you can at least share content you discover via Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn.Despite the above limitations, we&'re hearing on the grapevine that the app has been wowing Apple insiders. Right now we&'re talking about an app which will bring in content (curated by in-house editorial people), into a very nice interface. But around the corner they plan to take on the likes of Flipboard and others.Mitch Lazar, who recently switched chairman roles with founder Steve Ives to become CEO, says: a4AMy Taptu is a clever yet simple social news aggregator that we believe our customers will return to many times a day.&'' The key phrase for Taptu here is &''many times a day&''. There is an interesting story behind Taptu. When it appeared focused on mobile search a few years ago it was way ahead of its time. It even had a name which implied touch interfaces. But it&'s now had to re-invent itself at least a couple of times to take account of the appearance of the iPhone, touch screens and tablets. In all honesty it&'s a while since heard from Taptu. Last year they released an Android and then an iPhone app last year for search, and in 2008 secured a a4s6.45m series B financing. But not a lot else has been happening, at least publicly. We rather thought they were heading for the deadpool.Lazar says Taptu had &''great assets but not enough gravity, in the sense of bringing people back to the app several times a day.&'' He felt streams was where the market was going so shifted the company in this direction. &''We think we can monetise in other ways. It&'s not exciting unless we can get to a subscription model, but won&'t happen any time soon.&'' He says Flipboard is a &''great design. but we are on to something.&'' He also acknowledges that Tweetdeck is in much the same competition category as the &8216'new&' Taptu. The move makes sense for Taptu, which until now has dedicated its in-house curation resources to its mobile App Taptu Search. But it&'s clear to me that despite good reviews the app was not the future of this company. So it&'s fascinating to see them pivot their strategy in this manner. However, just adding Twitter and Facebook is only half the battle. With sites like Curated.by, Peer Index and Nsyght now, it&'s not enough to just pull in feeds &8211' you also need smart filtering, curation and intelligence. While Lazar runs the company from Denver, Colorado, its core team is based in Cambridge, UK, where is draws on a lot of local technology talent, many of which feature in a series of new, moody videos the company has made to accompany this launch. Watching them, you get the feeling this launch represents Taptu&'s big throw of the dice. And with MyTaptu they are hoping for a double six.
