An untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 is just around the corner.(Credit:MuscleNerd)If you are a jailbreak fan, there's finally some good news coming from the untethered jailbreak camp, led by the hackers at the Dev Team--an untethered jailbreak is running iOS 4.3 in beta.According to iPhone Download Blog, hacker Stefan Esser (@iOn1c) has come up with a solution, posting a tweet saying: "Theiphone-dev-team is already beta-testing the untether. So it is up to them to give you your tool of choice."Certainly if the Dev Team is running an untethered jailbreak solution for iOS 4.3, we can expect something soon. In the three weeks since the iOS 4.3 (andiPad 2) release, there hasn't been much exciting news coming from the jailbreak community. Until now, that is. To back it up, renowned hacker MuscleNerd tweeted: "well @iOn1c's untether is solid! Just working out overall 4.3.x JB issues and Cydia :)"There's still no official word on when the untethered jailbreak might be available, but signs are pointing to soon. Will you jailbreak your iPhone, iPad, oriPod Touch Let me know in the comments!

0 Vote(s)

If you're looking to escape Apple products, don't head to the movies. In 2010, Apple was tops in product placement, according to research released yesterday by BrandChannel. Apple products appeared in 10, or 30 percent, of the 33 movies that hit No. 1 at the box office last year. It easily bested Nike, Chevrolet, and Ford, which all tied for second place in product placement, finding their way to 24 percent of the top films in the U.S. at the box office last year. Sony and Dell had products in 15 percent of last year's hits, said BrandChannel, a Web site focused on brands and brand awareness.Apple's dominance in product placement has been going on for years. BrandChannel noted that between 2001 and 2010, 112 of the 334 films that hit No. 1 at the box office in the U.S. featured Apple products. The company followed only Ford over the past 10 years, which saw 144 films include its vehicles. The fact that Apple is tops in product placement probably doesn't surprise many people. On a slew of TV shows and movies, the company's familiar products pop up. Sometimes folks are using aMac to surf the Web, while other times, they enlist the help of aniPhone to place a call. But Apple's share in product placement is starting to slip. BrandChannel revealed that it hit a high of nearly 50 percent product placement in top movies in 2008. In 2009, Apple's placement reached 44 percent.

0 Vote(s)

Redbox owner Coinstar had a worse-than-expected fourth quarter as it severely underestimated the impact 28-day delays on movie availability, among other factors, would have on its operation. The company said yesterday that it expects to make between $78 million and $82 million when it announces fourth-quarter earnings next month. Coinstar initially estimated that it would generate a profit of $84 million to $90 million. Moreover, it has revised its 2011 revenue outlook down from $1.85 billion to $1.70 billion."Overall, the performance of the Redbox business during the fourth quarter was not in line with our forecast," Coinstar CEO Paul Davis said in a statement. "This was Redbox's first holiday season with 28-day delayed titles, and we underestimated the impact that the delay would have on demand during the fourth quarter."Davis also said that his company "expected much better performance from Blu-ray and had purchased to a higher level of demand." The company first started offering Blu-ray rentals in July.Even though it didn't live up to expectations, Redbox still performed quite well in the fourth quarter, Coinstar said. The company said its rental business was up 38 percent year-over-year with 144 million movies rented during the quarter.Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter was quick to point out that Redbox's lower-than-expected performance in the fourth quarter does not indicate trouble at Coinstar. He said in a note to investors today that the rental company's fourth quarter "was a hiccup attributable to overly aggressive guidance." And he specifically blamed Coinstar management for the mistake."We believe today's preannouncement is more a reflection of management's inability to accurately forecast than of a serious deterioration in the Redbox business," he said.Pachter was especially critical of Coinstar management's underestimation of the impact 28-day delays have on the rental company's operation.Last year, Redbox inked deals with Warner Bros., Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and Twentieth Century Fox to offer the studios' titles 28 days after they were made available at retail. He said that the studios "took full advantage of their head-start," and helped contribute to his estimate that Redbox had 14 million fewer rentals during the quarter than it expected."Prior to yesterday's preannouncement, we believed that the typical Redbox and Netflix customer is unaware of, or doesn't mind, the 28-day window for the majority of the year," Pachter wrote. "It is now clear that the 28-day window can make a difference in spending patterns at the holidays."Redbox's other issue on the quarter, according to Pachter, was its inability to manage its "rent and return anywhere" offering. The program lets users rent a movie from a Redbox kiosk in one location and return it to another when they're done. He said that the program "caused over-supply of key titles in some kiosks and under-supply in others." The impact of that shift could have turned some customers away.On Redbox's Blu-ray woes on the quarter, Pachter offered up a solution: "Those selecting Blu-ray should be shown only Blu-ray titles, and those selecting standard definition should be shown only standard definition." Currently, Redbox lets users browse Blu-ray and DVD titles at the same time.Going forward, Pachter sees strong performance from Redbox. He told investors that Coinstar should "deliver sequential earnings growth throughout the year," and perhaps most importantly, he believes that "management has learned its lesson."

0 Vote(s)

Business software maker SAP says it is working to adapt its market-leading enterprise resource management software to Research In Motion's Playbook tablet and that mobile versions of its software will be ready to go by the gadget's launch date of early next year.SAP Chief Information Officer Oliver Bussman told The Wall Street Journal that all of the company's ERP applications are being readied for the tablet."SAP is definitely supporting the RIM Playbook," Bussman said. That's good for RIM, which is hoping that loyalty on the part of its BlackBerry business customers will carry over to the Playbook. The company wants to avoid obsolescence at the hands of Apple's hugely populariPad tablet, as well as iPad competitors such as Samsung's Galaxy Tab, which runs Google's Android operating system.Though the Apple device hasn't been touted as a tool for businesses, that's started to change as corporate IT departments have begun embracing the iPad--in part because of its popularity with employees. Last month, AT&T pitched businesses a discounted wireless data plan for the iPad.SAP itself has welcomed the Apple device. Bussman told the Journal that the company is currently supporting nearly 2,000 of the gadgets--for use by its software developers, executives, and sales force--and is adding another 300 to 500 iPads to the fold every month. He said SAP is also considering the use of Android-based tablets, and that it will start using the Playbook in about a month."The penetration of the RIM Playbook will depend upon the apps," Bussmann told the Journal. "Apple has more enterprise apps ready. That is an advantage."

0 Vote(s)

Ligatures can link letters together aid in reading ease or text styling. Support for them is being developed within the World Wide Web Consortium&39's CSS standard.(Credit:W3C)The Web, ever more sophisticated, is feeble as a publication medium when it's compared to what can be done with layout software such as Adobe Systems' InDesign. But that's beginning to change. The change is significant: digital publishing is moving to the Web, but the array of new devices such as iPads and Kindles pose a challenge. Should those overseeing the designs create native applications for those devices or Web pages that will work on just about any device For the latter to be a competitive option, the Web has to match up better.A foundation for change was built with Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), a standard for Web page formatting that's now growing in significance and power. One big element here is support for the @font-face technology and the related Web Open Font Format, which together are letting Web developers specify downloadable fonts and use online font repositories such as TypeKit for a more polished, customized look.A new phase is under way now, though.Firefox browser developer Mozilla has begun work on CSS features to permit higher-end font controls, Mozilla developer John Daggett said yesterday in a blog post.Among the controls are the following:&149' Ligatures, which can replace combinations of letters with fancier or more readable replacements, a classic example being a specific glyph for "fi" to keep the top of the f from bumping into the dot of the i.&149' A way to specify use of small caps, which higher-end typefaces create independently so that the stroke weight of the characters matches that of lowercase letters.CSS developments would let Web developers specify when the browser should display alternate characters such as those with swashes, a distinctive look in combination, or historical styling.(Credit:W3C)&149' A way to specify use of typeset fraction characters rather than spelled-out versions such as "3/4."&149' Kerning, which governs how closely placed letters are to each other.&149' Support for monospaced numbers, which have the same width for easier reading in tables where vertical alignment of columns of numbers is required. Also under development is better support for bidirectional and vertical text, which accommodates languages with characters written top to bottom or right to left. Anne van Kesteren, who works on standards for browser maker Opera, offers a brief introduction to the new bidirectional text controls in HTML5Adobe, naturally, is an expert in design, and is getting more public about its interest in bringing better publishing to the Web. Despite its big business selling tools for Flash technology, the company insists it's a toolmaker, not a Flash toolmaker, and it's been branching out more into Web standards.Adobe&39's adaptive text layout tools can let text reflow when objects are repositioned on a page or the display device changes from horizontal to vertical orientation.(Credit:screenshot by Stephen Shankland/CNET)A good example is work Adobe showed off at its Max conference for "adaptive layout," in which text flows around objects such as photos or pull-out quotations. The adaptive part comes in when a Web page using the technology automatically adjusts to different screen sizes or orientations, an important factor given the diversity of reading devices that digital publishers must target.Notably, Adobe is working on both browser code and Web standards to advance the effort. For the browser work, it's relying on a partnership with ally Google. Here's how this particular set of stars align: Adobe's AIR programming foundation includes both the Flash Player and Adobe's version of the WebKit browser engine' WebKit is the foundation of Google's Chrome' and Google is supporting Flash Player on Android and building it directly into Chrome. Adobe's adaptive layout is a new example of the two companies' partnership of convenience."We're working with our friends at Google to help bring this back to WebKit," said Paul Gubbay, Adobe's vice president of product development for design, Web, and interative. In addition, Adobe is working with the W3C, which oversees CSS development, to bake the technology into the Web standard.CSS controls under development would let Web developers specify when ordinary fractions written out as separate characters would be replaced by specialized fraction characters, as shown in the bottom example.(Credit:Mozilla, John Daggett)

0 Vote(s)

Back in August, when Google launched Priority Inbox for Gmail, we praised it. And rightfully so. It took many of our nightmare inboxes and turned them into dreams. Well, okay, let&'s not get crazy. But it did make them more manageable. And now Google has so stats to share to prove it.When looking at the median numbers, Google has found that Gmail Priority Inbox users spend 43 percent more time reading &''important&'' emails versus &''unimportant&'' ones. But even more impressive is the overall stat: Priority Inbox users spend 15 percent less time reading email than Gmail users who don&'t have it turned on. That&'s actually pretty staggering.Google also used their post on the matter tonight to showcase a small but interesting new feature. Now, if you hover over the &''important&'' indicator on an email, Gmail will tell you why they think it&'s important. It could be because of the people messaging you, or the content of the conversation, among other reasons. This transparency is helpful, for example, in showing exactly why Gmail keeps placing some spam email in my Priority Inbox.Google also says that Priority Inbox should now respond faster to your manual corrections. Again, that should help with some poor categorization issues.Priority Inbox still isn&'t my dream of a Gmail Lite, but it&'s a start.CrunchBase InformationGmailInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Verizon&'s wireline broadband network can now reach speeds of 150 megabits a second, or about 21 times the average broadband speed across the country.Ivan Seidenberg, chief executive of the communications giant, and Lowell McAdam, chief operating officer, said that some pockets of the broadband network have such good quality that they can deliver huge speed boosts to users. At 150 megabits a second, you can download a movie in 4.5 minutes.Seidenberg said such fast broadband speeds will spur new innovation in the economy, as new businesses will be built delivering content to users over faster broadband. Verizon has about 15 million homes passed for its Fios broadband service today, which is available in many Verizon territory cities. Verizon expects to have 18 million homes passed in a year or so. It has 4 million subscribers.Just a short time ago, the usual broadband speed for users was 1 megabit a second, which was so slow it couldn&'t support most internet videos. Now the average has grown to 7 megabits a second and is climbing higher. Verizon, which owns a chunk of Verizon Wireless, is also rolling out its 4G LTE wireless network, which offers 10 times the usual speed of 3G mobile broadband data services. The work started in 2007 and required billions of dollars of investment in infrastructure and 700 megahertz spectrum. 4G LTE is now in 38 communities. That&'s just in time too, since wireless data communications traffic is doubling every year and smartphone sales are growing 90 percent a year, McAdam said.&''The full-blown mobile network is finally coming true,&'' McAdam said. The question is still whether the communications networks will keep pace with the growth in demand for broadband. Five years ago, video was just 10 percent of the internet&'s traffic. Now it is more than 50 percent and it could grow bigger soon.Mike Claron, principal engineer for Google&'s Android platform, said that the Honeycomb Android 3.0 software will make it possible for Android phones to access the 4G network speeds. He came out on stage to show off the Honeycomb software. Unfortunately, the Verizon executives didn&'t say anything about Apple, which is expected to launch the iPhone on the Verizon Wireless 4G LTE network sometime soon.Next Story: Skype acquires Qik, expands into live video Previous Story: Test-prep company Knewton takes online courses to next level: universityPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: broadband, fiber optic cable, FiOS, smartphoneCompanies: VerizonPeople: Ivan Seidenberg, Jeff Bewkes Tags: broadband, fiber optic cable, FiOS, smartphoneCompanies: VerizonPeople: Ivan Seidenberg, Jeff BewkesDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
