For those waiting patiently on an update of the MacBook Air, the first hints of its potential performance can be found in a Samsung laptop and the 13-inch MacBook Pro. 2010 MacBook Air.(Credit:Apple)Apple is expected to update the MacBook Air (MBA) this summer with Intel's "Sandy Bridge" processor, as CNET has reported. And there's really only one question on most people's minds: what kind of performance will a new MBA get you (We already know more or less what the price will be.) Luckily, there's some circumstantial evidence out there now. Exhibit A is the ultrathin Samsung series 9 NP900X3A and recent CNET benchmarks. Why this laptop It uses Intel's latest ultra-power-efficient 1.4GHz Intel Core i5-2537M Sandy Bridge chip--the same kind of low-power silicon the upcoming 11.6-inch Air is expected to use. That said, let's get the caveats out of the way first. The Samsung configuration tested uses 4GB of memory, while the tested 2010 Air uses 2GB. Another proviso applies to Intel's Sandy Bridge HD 3000 graphics (which the 2011 Air will likely use). Here's what CNET Reviews' Scott Stein said: "these graphics are better than were ever possible on thin-and-lights using last year's Intel integrated graphics, but they're not quite as good as the Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics on the [current] MacBook Air." And the benchmarks bear this out in some cases, as shown in the charts below. The Samsung Series 9 NP900X3A offers a glimpse of potential &39'Sandy Bridge&39' 11-inch MacBook Air performance. (Credit:CNET Reviews)Systems tested. (Credit:CNET Reviews)But those aren't the only relevant benchmarks. The Sandy Bridge-packing 13-inch MacBook Pro (MBP) shows the performance that a mainstream Sandy Bridge processor can deliver and may approximate a future 13-inch MacBook Air. Why is it comparable That MBP model comes with Intel HD 3000 graphics and is, therefore, indicative of the performance of a 13-inch Sandy Bridge MacBook Air. (The 15-inch MacBook Pro employs AMD Radeon graphics and is not a good yardstick.) The question is, how far will Apple push the performance envelope on the Sandy Bridge 13-inch Air to get it close to the MacBook Pro 13-incher In trying to answer that question, let's not forget that Apple currently uses a relatively fast low-power Core 2 Duo processor in the top-line Air: the SL9600 running at 2.13GHz with 6MB of cache memory. So, what might be a suitable follow-on to that chip Intel is now shipping the Core i7-2649M (4M Cache, 2.30 GHz) which, at 25 watts, is a power-efficient chip but not as power-frugal as the 17-watt ultra-power-efficient Core i5 Sandy Bridge used in the Samsung Series 9. The point: higher wattage typically means better performance. &39'Sandy Bridge&39' MacBook Pros versus 2010 MacBook Air. Though likely faster than a Sandy Bridge MBA, this is another indicator of Sandy Bridge performance.(Credit:CNET Reviews)As I've written before, moving Intel's Sandy Bridge chip into the MacBook Air would finally break a processor logjam that's existed for more than three years now. Though the Air has been updated several times over the last three years, it has stuck to the same basic Intel chip technology since its inception in 2008.

0 Vote(s)

In another blow to online file-sharing, a Swedish appeals court upheld on Friday the copyright convictions of three of the four founders of The Pirate Bay--perhaps the world's most well-known and notorious file-sharing Web site. The court agreed with last year's ruling, which found Fredrik Neij, Peter Sunde, and Carl Lundstrom guilty of helping Pirate Bay users break Sweden's copyright law. However, it revised the ruling to decrease the defendants' jail sentences and increase the amount they must pay in damages. The lower court had sentenced the men to a year in prison and set damages at about 30 million Swedish kronor ($4.2 million). The new ruling raises the damages another 16 million kronor and cuts Neij's sentence to 10 months, Sunde's to 8 months, and Lundstrom's to 4 months, based on each man's individual activities with The Pirate Bay.A fourth Pirate Bay founder convicted by the lower court, Gottfrid Swartholm Warg, will get a separate ruling later, owing to the fact that illness prevented him from participating in the appeals trial.Still up and running, The Pirate Bay is a BitTorrent search engine that helps online file sharers locate pirated copies of films, music, games, software, and other digital content. It's been celebrated by some as a heroic kick in the eye to corporate copyright owners who, these people believe, have priced content unfairly and whose policies have hampered the creative commons.Founders of The Pirate Bay (from left) are Peter Sunde, Fredrik Neij, and Gottfrid Svartholm Warg. Not pictured is Carl Lundstrom. A ruling on Warg is still to come.(Credit:Pontus Alexander/Fabian Landgren)The copyright owners see it differently and view such sites as nothing more than aids to outright theft. In the U.S., they claim illegal file-sharing has cost jobs and hurt the economy, an argument that may influence debate over a bill now before Congress that would let the government shut down sites accused of aiding piracy. That bill, and this latest ruling, are not the only threats to file-sharing. Last month, a U.S. judge ordered the company that operates the long popular file-sharing software LimeWire to disable the software's file-sharing and searching capabilities. The software, however, has reappeared much as it was before. On Friday, the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry issued a statement about the Pirate Bay ruling."Today's judgment confirms the illegality of The Pirate Bay and the seriousness of the crimes of those involved," said Chief Executive Frances Moore. "We now look to governments and [Internet service providers] to take note of this judgment, do the responsible thing, and take the necessary steps to get The Pirate Bay shut down."Some say The Pirate Bay's troubles signal the coming of the end of file-sharing piracy. "In two years, this type of piracy will be over. After a ruling like this and all the pioneers start to get older and have children and families, piracy won't occur to this extent,"Monique Wadsted, an attorney representing American record companies, told the Swedish news agency TT.Others, however, scoff at that notion."The judgment has no meaning for file sharing. It has continued to increase from year to year and the technical capabilities continue to develop," Christian Engstrom, a European Parliament member who represents the Pirate Party, told the TT agency. The Pirate Party is devoted to reforming laws regarding copyright and patents. As of this writing, lawyers for the Pirate Bay founders have not yet said whether they will appeal this latest ruling to the Swedish Supreme Court. The defendants' argument has been that The Pirate Bay doesn't engage in illegal activity' it's merely a search tool that can be used for legal or illegal actions, with that choice being left up to the users themselves.

0 Vote(s)

Google has begun work on a feature to let Chrome load pages before they're needed, the latest instance of the company's relentless focus on Web performance. The work, described briefly in the Chrome issue tracker, said the project to "pre-load pages in background tabs for 'wicked fast' page loads" is scheduled to arrive in the browser's code base in February. The very early stages of work has begun: support for an eventual option to enable testing the feature through Chrome's "about:flags" interface. With Chrome's tabbed browsing interface, multiple pages can be loaded into separate memory compartments simultaneously. A background tab, presumably, is one that's in use but hidden from the user interface. When a person clicks on a preloaded Web page, the browser could simply activate the page rather than load it.One tricky part of the technology is of course deciding which pages, or fractions of pages, to preload and when to purge unread pages from memory. Some Web pages have dozens of links, and some browser users have dozens of active tabs open.Another complication: artificial inflation of page-view statistics on the Web. Analytics tools will have to be able to distinguish between a "real" page view and a preload. A related analytics complication is registering when a preloaded page is activated. AppleSafari's 3D interface for showing a thumbnail array of recently used Web pages brought similar complications.Through a process called DNS prefetching, Chrome already tackles some potentially slow networking chores before Web pages are clicked. And Google has many other fast-Web projects under way, including a technology called False Start to speed encrypted Web pages, rewiring Web server communications with the SPDY protocol, support for the WebP image format as an alternative to JPEG, and switching to the libjpeg-turbo library for when JPEG images need to be drawn.

0 Vote(s)

The nucleus of Hartley 2 is about three-quarters of a mile across.(Credit:NASA/University of Maryland)A recycled NASA spacecraft passed within 435 miles of Comet Hartley 2 today and beamed back spectacular pictures revealing a strange, peanut-shaped nucleus spewing multiple jets of icy debris. The Deep Impact spacecraft, the centerpiece of a repurposed mission known by the acronym EPOXI, flew past Hartley 2 at more than 7 miles per second, or 27,000 mph, making its closest approach at 7 a.m. PT. Comet Hartley 2 has a peanut-shaped nucleus spewing multiple jets of debris.(Credit:NASA/University of Maryland)A few moments later, the spacecraft reoriented itself and aimed its high-gain antenna back toward Earth to begin relaying stored pictures and telemetry. In 2005, the spacecraft flew past comet Tempel 1, blasting out a crater with a small sub-satellite.The first images sent back today were shot with a medium-resolution camera, starting 18 hours before close approach. As subsequent images came in from deep space, the comet grew in size and clarity on computer monitors in the control room at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. As the first close-up images came in, engineers and scientists in the control room burst into applause. The images showed a peanut-shaped nucleus with a jet of debris extending away from one end and other, smaller jets at different locations around the body. Ridges and pits could be seen in the black-and-white images, prompting repeated outbursts of applause and cheers.Scientists already knew Hartley 2 had a dual-lobe shape based on ground-based radar images obtained earlier. But the clarity of the pictures from Deep Impact's medium-resolution camera showed a remarkable level of detail. Pictures from the spacecraft's high-resolution telescope are expected later."It dawned on me as we were waiting for that first picture, we had no idea what we were going to see other than it was going to be a weird-shaped object," Ed Weiler, director of space science at NASA headquarters, told the EPOXI team. "That was the exploration part. Now the fun really starts. Now we've got to explain what the hell we're looking at. That's the science!"The nucleus of Hartley 2 is about three-quarters of a mile across.(Credit:NASA/University of Maryland)Principal Investigator Michael A'Hearn at the University of Maryland said last month the primary goal of the encounter was to learn more about the evolution of the so-called "dirty snowballs," believed to have formed during the birth of the solar system 4.5 billion years ago, what causes differences in appearance and behavior and how those differences might reflect the initial composition of the solar nebula."The nucleus of Comet Hartley 2 is about three-quarters of a mile across compared to the four miles across for comets Tempel 1, our prime mission target, Wild 2, and Borelli," A'Hearn said. "So it's a much smaller nucleus. Despite that, it puts out more gas every minute than does Tempel 1."So this says it's a really active nucleus for its size. And this is what sets it apart and what will enable us to try to separate the features on the nucleus that are driven by the outgassing process and the evolution of the comet from the aspects of the nucleus that are primordial and can tell us how the planets formed four and a half billion years ago."Before today's encounter, only four comets had been closely imaged by passing spacecraft: Halley, Wild 2, Borelli, and Tempel 1."You'll notice they are very different from one another, both the overall shape and the kinds of features on the surface," said Tim Larson, EPOXI project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "Three of them are about the same size, about four miles across, Halley is about twice as big.Hartley 2 was discovered by Australian astronomer Malcolm Hartley in March 1986.(Credit:NASA/University of Maryland)"What we want to understand is why these differences occur when we don't see obvious differences in the processes that should shape what we see. What we wanted to do was go to a small nucleus and Comet Hartley 2 had been identified as early as the Deep Impact prime mission as a potential target."NASA managers initially selected a different target, but that comet apparently broke apart and disappeared. The team then shifted its focus to Hartley 2, discovered by Australian astronomer Malcolm Hartley in March 1986."It's a very special time for me, I never imagined 24 years ago that I'd be witnessing something like this," Hartley said during a media teleconference last month. "When I saw the comet, it was millions and millions of kilometers away, and it's only going to be about 700 kilometers away when I next see it. So I'm extremely excited and feel very privileged to be here."Hartley was present in the control room at JPL as Deep Impact flew past at some 435 miles. The approach distance was set to maximize the science return and to ensure the spacecraft's protection from jets of carbon dioxide gas and debris."The closer we get to the comet, the better our image resolution, so we want to get as close as we can," said Larson. "But we're also limited by the turn rate of the spacecraft. As the comet zooms by us, we have to be able to turn fast enough to track it all the way by."And so at 700 kilometers, it stays well within our capability to do that. If we get too much closer than 700 kilometers, we also start getting into a denser portion of the coma that poses more threats of damage to the spacecraft due to the particles that are there."

0 Vote(s)

MySpace has had trouble staying relevant as Facebook's user base continues to grow. But with its latest update, the News Corp.-owned social network is trying to see if it can regain at least some of its past glory with social entertainment targeted toward Generation Y. MySpace's new site design is intended to help Gen Y users find a "broad array of programming, including originals, exclusives, and content from around the Web." The company is also encouraging users to share their interests on their profiles, as well as "connect" to others who share those interests.Once users log in to their accounts, the new MySpace welcome page will display entertainment content they might like based on the site's understanding of their interests. The goal, MySpace said, is to "create a unique, contextually relevant discovery experience."To achieve that goal, the company has released several "products" to get people to the content they really care about. One of those products, called Topics, connects MySpace users to over 20,000 "entertainment-focused, dynamic pages." Those pages feature content on entertainment topics from a number sites, including MTV, The Village Voice, and The New York Times. In addition, MySpace has created "Content Hubs" that zero in on movies, television shows, or celebrities. Each hub will feature articles and related content to the hub's focus. The company plans to offer games, comedy, sports, and fashion hubs "in the coming months."To keep users connected while on the go, MySpace also plans to launch a mobile version of the site in the near future. A MySpace app for theiPhone and Android handsets will be released "later this year."A view of the new MySpace Profile page.(Credit:MySpace)In an attempt to tailor the MySpace experience to the user, the site will now feature a personalized stream that displays content from across the site that the user is most likely to care about based on their habits while using MySpace. In addition, MySpace is adding a Recommendations feature, which lists some topics users might want to consider delving into or fans they might want to connect with. MySpace said that its recommendations engine is powered by "algorithms that learn the type of content a user views, listens to, or watches, and from whom or where they discovered it."Finally, MySpace has added a trending topics feature to help users find out what music and videos were recently added to the site. A "My Stuff" tab in the user's profile will display all the content the respective person personally uploaded to the site.In addition to a complete site overhaul, MySpace has changed its logo. The logo now includes a bracket that, according to MySpace, "represents a space where people can express themselves, enabling users to personalize the logo and make it their own--just as they can throughout MySpace."The new MySpace, which is currently in beta, is being rolled out starting today. It will be available to every user by the end of November.

0 Vote(s)

And just how does the moon smell Hagen Betzwieser and Sue Corke haven't been there themselves, so they went with reports from Apollo 16 astronaut Charlie Duke, who said it has a strong smell resembling gunpowder. Up next: a best-selling perfume(Credit:We Colonised the Moon) The limited-edition silkscreen prints, which sell for $55 unframed, started out as "Moon, Scratch & Sniff," a commissioned project for Amsterdam's Stedelijk Museum, which held an event on olfactory art last month. Now anyone with an interest in solar system scents can take a sniff of them. "Smell, place, and memory are very closely linked. No one who sniffs our postcard from the moon is ever likely to go there," said Corke, an apprentice with Edinburgh Printmakers, which is selling the prints. "Yet now I hope this is a smell, similar to a freshly struck match, which will always remind them of it." The 11x7-inch art was imprinted with "Moondust Natural R342," a smell designed as a scent by a "flavorist" at Omega Ingredients in the U.K. The scent was then converted into printable ink by The Aroma Company and transferred onto the print with a waterproof stencil.

0 Vote(s)

And they spent most or all of that round buying the largest online coupon startup on the market, Australia&'s RetailMeNot.a4sBrian Sharples, the founder and CEO of HomeAway, is also an investor in WhaleShark. That may seem like a lot of money to pay for a coupon site. But RetailMeNot will generate about $30 million in 2010 revenue, we hear, and is growing rapidly. The best part of their model is that almost all of their revenue is profit. They get traffic from search engines, not paid ads, and just five employees are needed to run the site. By any reasonable valuation methodology WhaleShark got quite a deal it seems.About 14 million people visit RetailMeNot each month, say cofounders Guy King and Bevan Clark. It&'s just four years old.The company sits firmly in the hot &''deal&'' space dominated by Groupon right now. Traditionally ecommerce sites get traffic via SEO, email, coupons/deals and paid ads. After SEO and email, affiliate type deals/coupons are the most profitable way to get new customers, says WhaleShark.WhaleShark is lead by CEO Cotter Cuningham. Austin Ventures partner Tom Ball, who sits on the WhaleShark board, has deep coupon experience as well &8211' he founded eCoupons in the 90s and sold it to Lifeminders.WhaleShark has previously acquired Deals2Buy, Coupon7, Cheapstingybargains and Deals.com.CrunchBase InformationWhaleShark MediaRetailMeNotAustin VenturesNorwest Venture PartnersAdams Street PartnersInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

There was a big shakeup in the online advertising world last weekend: Google cut off AppNexus from its ad exchange, forcing the startup to direct its clients to purchase ad inventory directly from Google. The move comes only a few weeks after AppNexus raised a huge $50 million round, which included a big chunk from Microsoft. And the timing couldn&'t be worse for AppNexus a4"a4sbecause of the huge surge in shopping, last week was among the busiest, if not the busiest, a4stime of the year for these platforms.AppNexus offers, among other things, a real-time platform for purchasing ad inventory from ad exchanges a4"a4sthe largest of which is Google&'s. One industry expert I spoke with guessed that Google&'s exchange could account for 50% or more of AppNexus inventory, so this is a very big deal for the company and its clients.Reached for comment, Google gave us this statement:To protect users and publishers, the Ad Exchange has extensive, widely-published policies for a range of issues including ad quality, ad content and malware. We have technologies to detect violations, and when a customer is in breach of our policies, we take action, including potential suspension from the Ad Exchange.Google declined to discuss any further details, but the statement suggests that AppNexus has somehow violated its terms. We&'ve reached out to the startup to see if it has anything it can share about the issue.Faced with no other choice, AppNexus has directed its clients to purchase inventory directly from Google&'s exchange. AppNexus can still make money off of these transactions though fees, but it can take weeks for these clients to establish a relationship directly with Google. And Google offers its own competing platform through its acquisition of Invite Media earlier this year a4" if clients begin working with Google directly they may also switch to its demand side platform as well. Here are two emails that AppNexus sent to its clients, which seem to indicate that it had no idea this was coming.Dear Client,Beginning at 7:00 PM ET / 12:00 AM UTC, our monitoring alerted us to the fact that our real time bid requests from Google&'s AdX had dropped to zero. We are investigating on our side and are also working with our contacts at Google. Currently we have no ETA for a resolution. We will update you as more details become available.Thank you for your patience,Steve&8212'&8212'&8212'&8212'&8212'&8212'&8212'&8212'&8212'&8212'Important Update:Further to the notification below regarding the disruption of access to DoubleClick Ad Exchange supply, AppNexus has been in continuous contact with Google to resolve this issue. At present, Googlea4a4s position is to require all AppNexus buyers accessing Ad Exchange inventory to have a direct contract with Google in order to restore access. To be clear, this will not impact your ability to use AppNexus as your RTB platform for buying Google inventory, but simply means that you will in the future remit payment for media purchased on DoubleClick Ad Exchange to Google directly, rather than to AppNexus.Your account manager will contact you tomorrow with details on how to proceed with restoring access to DoubleClick Ad Exchange. We thank you for your continued patience and support as we work through this.Regards,Michael RubensteinCrunchBase InformationGoogleAppNexusInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

California politics bloga4sCalitics has unearthed some interesting data about the $1 million in funding behind the recent round of television ads against Democratic attorney general candidate Kamala Harris. Digging deeper into the contribution history of the Republican State Leadership Committee, the Karl Rove led group behind the ad campaign, reveals contributions from four top Silicon Valley tech firms. The ads attack Harris on her opposition to the death penalty (which most Californians are in favor of)a4sbut it&'s hard to imagine Google, HP, eBay and Yahoo taking a stance so out of step with the beliefs of many of their executives and employees. The Huffington Post providesa4sa more thorough explanation of the motivations behind the unprecedented corporate involvement in next Tuesday&'s attorney general race &8212' &''State attorneys general are increasingly at the front lines of major political issues that affect big-business bottom lines&'' including those in the tech industry. The last time Harris and the tech sector sparred was during the Democratic AG primary, where her campaign launched an offensive againsta4sformera4sFacebook executive Chris Kelly for spearheading the Facebook &''Instant Personalization&'' program which included ads that ended with the brusque statement, &''Chris Kelly released your private information.&'' As both Net Neutrality and Internet Privacy continue to be major political issues, with both Facebook and Google dropping cash on California lobbying efforts, the big four are trying to ensure that the candidate that will go easiest on them wins.Harris is currently trailing in the polls against Republican Steve Cooley, and her campaign has come out against the Republican State Leadership Committee for not disclosing its top financial contributors within the ad itself.A Google representative responded to our inquiries about the search company&'s involvement, stating that it was dismayed by the allocation of its contribution.&''Google gives to campaign committees of both parties to help support their campaign activities at the national level. The RSLC is one of those groups. We were not consulted about this ad or any other particular ad the RSLC has paid for, and are disappointed to learn the committee chose to spend their funds in this manner.&'' HP released their official statement:a4AHP contributes equally to both Republican and Democratic campaign committees. HP has no involvement in the campaigna4a4s strategy and tactics and was not consulted on the ad.a4And so did Yahoo:a4AYahoo! pays membership contributions to the RSLC and its Democratic counterpart, and takes part in a range of issue conferences and other activities that these organizations host year round.
Expedia has just announced that it has acquired developer Mobiata, the creator of popular mobile travel application FlightTrack. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Mobiata creates a number of travel mobile applications including FlightTrack, TripDeck, HotelPal FlightBoard and FareCompare. FlightTrack is the developer&'s most popular app and lets you check flight status, access information about delays or reschedules, locate your flight&'s gates, and see real-time tracking maps of flights. FlightTrack is currently a best selling iPhone travel app in the App Store. A Pro Version of FlightTrack is also integrated into TripIt Pro. We&'re not sure if that relationship will continue post-acquisition.According to the release, the acquisition represents Expedia&'s &''most significant investment to date in addressing the mobile travel market.&'' Expedia is currently seeing 4 percent of its traffic coming from mobile browsers or app, and hopes to grow this number through the acquisition. This week also brought the news that travel search aggregator Kayak.com is filing for a $50 million IPO. And the online travel industry is in a state of flux awaiting whether Google&'s $700 million acquisition of ITA Software (which powers flight listings for both Kayak and Expedia) will be given the green-light by the Justice Department.CrunchBase InformationMobiataInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

The Motorola-Microsoft battle has escalated even further. Many of you may have heard about the lawsuit Microsoft filed against Motorola over royalties regarding the use of Motorola&'s technology in the Xbox gaming system. And Microsoft sued Motorola earlier this month over the violation of nine trade patents involving smartphones powered by the Android OS. This evening, a subisdiary of Motorola, Motorola Mobility has filed lawsuits in Florida and Wisconsin against Microsoft alleging infringement of sixteen patents by Microsoft&'s PC and Server software, Windows mobile software and Xbox products. According to the release, the Motorola patents involve PC and Server software relate to Windows OS, digital video coding, email technology including Exchange, Messenger and Outlook, Windows Live instant messaging and object oriented software architecture. Motorola&'s suite also says that Microsoft is infringing on patents related to Windows Marketplace, Bing maps and object oriented software architecture. The Motorola patents directed to Xbox relate to digital video coding, WiFi technology, and graphical passwords. Those allegations span a tremendous amount of technologies in the Microsoft suite of products, so it&'s unclear if Motorola really has grounds here. Motorola has requested that Microsoft cease using Motorola&'s patented technology and &''provide compensation&'' for Microsoft&'s past infringement. It&'s unclear what sort of compensation Motorola expects from the complaint. Kirk Dailey, corporate vice president of intellectual property at Motorola Mobility, said, in the statement: &''Motorola&'s R&amp'D and intellectual property are of great importance to the Company and are renowned worldwide. We are committed to protecting the interests of our shareholders, customers and other stakeholders and are bringing this action against Microsoft in order to halt its infringement of key Motorola patents. Motorola has invested billions of dollars in R&amp'D to create a deep and broad intellectual property portfolio and we will continue to do what is necessary to protect our proprietary technology.&''He also addressed the suits Microsoft has filed against Motorola: &''It is unfortunate&8230'that Microsoft has chosen the litigation path rather than entering into comprehensive licensing negotiations, as Motorola has mutually beneficial licensing relationships with the great majority of technology companies industry-wide.&''It will most probably take an IP attorney to sort through all of these accusations. One thing is for surea4"both companies are probably shelling out considerable legal fees over this.
Earlier today, we noted that Paul Rademacher, the man known for creating &''the first true Web 2.0 application&'', was leaving his engineering job at Google after five years with the company. Now we know where he&'s going. And it&'s very interesting. No, it&'s not Facebook like seemingly every other Xoogler these days. Instead, he&'s joining up with Joshua Schachter (the founder of Delicious) and Nick Nguyen (the former director of add-ons for Mozilla) to found Tasty Labs.Schachter, who helped jumpstart the consumer Internet space in 2004 with Delicious, sold his company to Yahoo in 2005. He then left in 2008 and joined Google in 2009 before leaving earlier this year. Nguyen worked for Schachter at Delicious in the past and just left his post at Mozilla about ten days ago. Those two, along witha4sRademacher form a pretty hot shot team for whatever it is they&'re doing.&''Ia4a4m either going to launch an open source operating system for unmanned aerial vehicles, or build a first person shooter to teach non-violent solutions based on buddhist principles. Or a pet food review site,&'' Schachter told us in August when asked what he was working on. When reached for comment today, he confirmed that &''pet food reviews is where the money is.. or a marketplace for used satellites.&''Funny guy. In all seriousness though, Schachter does say they&'re &''definitely probably almost certainly not in the bookmarking space.&'' Given Rademacher&'s expertise in Maps and Schachter&'s recent angel investments in several location startups, that might not be a bad guess. Or maybe Schacter and Rademacher left Google because they wanted to build a social graph for the company and knew they couldn&'t do it from within.a4sMaybe they&'ll do it from the outside and sell it back to the search giant in six months. Or maybe Schachter and Nguyen are secretly forming a new investment bank to buy Yahoo in six months and rip Delicious back from their claws. Tasty, Delicious, get it Who knows. You can find out basically nothing about Tasty Labs here.CrunchBase InformationTasty LabsInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

As promised, my guest on Ask a VC this week is James Chan of Neoteny Labs, an early stage Singaporean investment firm. Chan isn&'t some banker-fied expat, he&'s a &''son of Singapore&'s soil&'' as he phrases it. He was educated in the system, served his two years in the army and got a scholarship to study in the US, part at Carnegie Mellon University and part at Stanford. That scholarship came with a hefty price: He had to come back and work for the Singapore government for six years or pay hundreds of thousands of Singaporean dollars to get out of it. Yeesh, those are some strings, Pinnochio. The government offered to subsidize my trip to Singapore, but TechCrunch or my personal (depleted) savings account pays for 95% of my travel&8211' the exception being when I&'m paid to speak at a conference. In this case, TechCrunch picked up the tab, and hearing Chan&'s story I was relieved. Even Arrington&'s lock-in with AOL isn&'t that long.Chan didn&'t wind up serving all of it, thanks to Joi Ito who met Chan and decided he had to have him for Neoteny Labs&' man-on-the-ground and helped negotiate an out in the contract with a deferred payment plan. But Chan&'s experience in the government gave him an appreciation for the strengths and weaknesses of Singapore&'s astoundingly practical and far-reaching government machine.Chan uses that unique mash-up of East-West experiences to answer reader questions about investing in Southeast Asia&8211' and where to find the best chili crab in Singapore. Next week, our interview with one of Indonesia&'s only early stage fund, East Ventures.

0 Vote(s)
