The 12.5-inch Lenovo ThinkPad E220s.(Credit:Lenovo)Just about a year ago, Lenovo introduced the ThinkPad Edge series, an updated, low-cost redesign of the ThinkPad targeted at small businesses. The 2011 updates to the ThinkPad Edge series, announced today, add new second-generation Intel Core-i processors as well as a bolder, sleeker design in the 12 and 14-inch Edge E220s and E420s.The ThinkPad Edge E220s, perhaps the most attractive of the bunch, has an unusually-sized 12.5-inch screen but dimensions and weight that more closely match an 11.6-incher. The E220s is under an inch thick and weighs under 3.5 pounds but lacks an optical drive, while the larger-screened 14.1-inch E420s has a slot-loading DVD drive. Both the E220s and E420s have a smoother matte finish, metal touches on the corners, a large clickpad, and HDMI ports, as well as Dolby Home Theatre audio technology an HD webcam. Processors will range from second-gen Intel Core i3 processors up to Core i7. The new Edge laptops also have Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0, which Lenovo claims adds a significant improvement to boot-up time. The stylistic improvements are impressive, but come at a price: the E220s starts at $899, which pits it in a premium territory. The E420s will start at $749, but both are more expensive than last year's ThinkPad Edge laptops.Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E220s and E420s The 14 and 15-inch ThinkPad Edge 420 and 520 will offer more affordable alternatives, essentially carrying over last year's Edges with new processors and starting at $599. All new ThinkPad Edge models will be available in April.Lenovo has also announced a successor of sorts to last year's 11.6-inch ThinkPad x100e: the ThinkPad x120e will start at under $400 and keep its 11.6-inch screen, but use AMD's new Fusion e-series CPUs. We really liked the x100e, and all signs point to the x120e being an affordable improvement. Lenovo promises improved battery life, an HDMI port, and a release date in February.Lenovo ThinkPad X120e (photos) We'll be checking out these new ThinkPads firsthand when we touch down at CES in Vegas.

0 Vote(s)

Craigslist has shut down its adult services section on all of its international sites.(Credit:Craigslist)Craigslist's adult services section is now out of business around the world. The ouster of the controversial section was confirmed by Craigslist to the office of Connecticut Attorney General General Richard Blumenthal yesterday, according to the Associated Press. The removal of the section from dozens of countries follows a similar action that saw it taken down in the U.S. four months ago.Responding to the global takedown, Blumenthal called it "another another important step in the ongoing fight to more effectively screen and stop pernicious prostitution ads," the AP reported. No date was specified as to when the section was removed globally, but Wired Magazine apparently broke the story this past Saturday, saying that Craigslist "quietly" took down the section from all of its international sites, including those in Canada, Asia, Europe, South America, and Africa. For more than a year, Craigslist found itself the target of heated criticism over its ads for erotic services.Attorneys general and human rights groups alike complained that the section was a storefront for ads promoting prostitution and the trafficking of human beings. Craigslist was also in the spotlight early last year after the arrest of Philip Markoff, an individual who was reportedly using the site to meet women and was charged with murdering one of them. This past August, Markoff committed suicide in his jail cell as he was awaiting trial. In an effort to keep the site running, Craigslist tried to pull a few tricks out of its hat. Last year, the company renamed the section from "erotic services" to "adult services." Along with the name change, Craigslist said at the time that it would monitor the ads rather than relying on users to identify ones that were questionable. It also upped the initial price to post an adult ad from $5 to $10.But this past year, the scrutiny intensified, as attorneys general around the country joined in an effort to convince the company to shut down the adult section in the U.S. Bowing to the pressure, the company finally closed the U.S. brand of its adult ads this past September and has promised to keep the section shut down for good.Craigslist and the Connecticut attorney general's office were not immediately available for comment.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Apple)If you still need that perfect gift this Christmas, you can always make something special, like a book, calendar, or other personalized item. But if you're going to do it, you should hurry. Many of the services on the Internet that handle making personalized gifts have begun to announce shipping deadlines for customers to create the product and still have them in time for Christmas. There are a number of places, including Apple, Shutterfly, Snapfish, and Blurb.com, that allow you to create a gift that is more creative--and certainly more focused and individual--than buying something off the shelf at a big box store. If you want express shipping, you have an extra day--until December 19--to place your order.Apple is offering its new iPhoto letterpress cards this year for the first time. The cards are available in 12 holiday themes.Shutterfly says its customers have until December 21 at 4:00 p.m. to order photo books and calendars and still receive their products by December 24.
(Credit:Amazon Studios)Amazon.com has gone Hollywood.Debuting yesterday, the new Amazon Studios is looking to make commercial motion pictures based on scripts and movies submitted by budding screenwriters and filmmakers.Anyone with dreams to make it big in the big-screen business is invited to submit a full-length movie or script. Through both monthly and annual awards starting in 2011, Amazon plans to offer cash to the best submissions and develop the top projects as commercial movies through Warner Bros. or another Hollywood studio.Filmmakers can upload their movies at the Amazon Studios Web site. Movies must be full-length--at least 70 minutes--and be based on an original idea or a script submitted to Amazon. They don't have to be full-scale, full-budget theatrical productions, so no expensive crane shots or Lucas-like special effects are required. Amazon Studios is currently showing five sample movies on its site to give people an idea of what they can submit.Beyond competing for top awards, movies will be go through a public screening process whereby people can go online to view and comment on the work. Amazon is hoping these test screenings can help guide the development of the film and offer insights on its potential as a commercial release.Writers can also submit scripts and then pitch their idea through a short video with the goal of generating buzz about their screenplays and convincing people to download and read them."We are excited to introduce writers, filmmakers, and movie lovers to Amazon Studios," Roy Price, director of digital product development for Amazon Studios, said in a statement. "Full-length test movies will show stories up on their feet and attract helpful feedback at an early stage. We hope that Amazon Studios will help filmmakers experiment and collaborate and we look forward to developing hit movies."The winning scripts and movies will be chosen based on commercial viability, according to Amazon, and judged by a panel of people in the business, including Jack Epps Jr., producer of such films as "Top Gun" and "Dick Tracy"' Mark Gill, former head of Miramax' Mike Werb, screenwriter of "The Mask" and "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider"' and Michael Taylor, producer of "Bottle Rocket" and "The Pursuit of D.B. Cooper."Scripts and movies vying for the monthly awards must be submitted by the end of each month, starting with January. Also, for everyone who played regularly during Road Trip 2010, please note that this is the tenth of the weekly Picture of the Week challenges. With Road Trip 2010 officially finished--and therefore no more new Road Trip pictures per se--the challenge is now taking place each Thursday, and the photos could come from anywhere, not just Road Trip 2010 locations, and might be related to stories I've written in the past. So, please have fun playing today, and then come back each Thursday. For most of the summer, Geek Gestalt was on Road Trip 2010. After driving more than 18,000 miles in the Rocky Mountains, the Pacific Northwest, the Southwest and the Southeast over the last four years, I drove 5,266 miles this summer looking for the best in technology, science, military, nature, aviation and more throughout the American Northeast.
Robin Li, the chief executive of Chinese search engine Baidu, made a rare US appearance at the Web 2.0 Summit today, where he answered questions about his success &8212' and about why competitor Google failed to make any real headway in China. One of the common explanations is that China&'s government backs Baidu and created obstacles for Google, but Li said that it&'s a &''misperception&'' to believe that &''Baidu is the only game in town.&'' Instead, he said, Baidu won because it was willing to focus on and adapt to the Chinese market.&''First of all, we did try harder,&'' Li said. He noted that when he returned to China from Silicon Valley 10 years ago, he gave up all his stock options in his old companies, and Baidu &''basically did nothing but Chinese search&'' for a decade. During its first five years, Baidu tripled the size of its search index every year, compared to other search engines that only increased by 30 or 50 percent. There are obstacles to working in China, such as government censorship and slower internet load times, but companies need to be patient and adaptable, Li said. For example, he had heard complaints that the bureaucracy makes it more time-consuming to legally establish a company in China than in the United States. But while Li was waiting for the business license, Baidu rented office space and started writing code.&''The censorship issue, the bureaucracy, the slow internet connection, those are the things you really don&'t have control of,&'' Li said. And China&'s startup environment is different from the situation in the US, he added. For one thing, Silicon Valley venture capitalists poured a lot of money into the region before Google&'s arrival, creating a very competitive landscape. For another, many talented Chinese engineers in the US are willing to come back to China to work for a startup or to create their own.&''If you are not prepared to compete in this kind of market, you&'re not going to be successful,&'' Li said.So how dominant is Baidu Li said there are 420 million people online in China and that 99 percent of them use Baidu. As for future plans, Li said Baidu is looking at international growth and has already moved into Japan. Taking on Google in the more-established US market is not a priority, however.&''If we [come] up with ideas that are different and better, we will do it,&'' Li said. &''Otherwise, we will wait.&''[photo by Dean Takahashi]Next Story: Twitter eyes global expansion through local trends and translations Previous Story: With 320M users, Zynga chief sees a &''dog activated&'' world of gamersPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: China, Web 2.0 SummitCompanies: Baidu, GooglePeople: Robin Li Tags: China, Web 2.0 SummitCompanies: Baidu, GooglePeople: Robin LiAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Solar system designer and installer Borrego announced today it has secured its second funding round to finance six new solar projects worth about $36 million.Borrego Solar recently introduced a financing model that sounds like a larger-scale version of what SunRun does for the residential solar market. The company sells solar energy to businesses through power purchase agreements (PPAs) and builds, operates and maintains the solar systems so that its customers don&'t have to incur the upfront capital expenditures.Looks like that approach is working out. Last summer, Borregoclosed $20 million in financing from U.S. Bank and East West Bank to kick off its PPA program. Both banks came back in the bigger, more recent financing round announced today.Interestingly, U.S. Bank is owned by U.S. Bancorp, which alongside PG&amp'E has provided over $300 million in project financing to SunRun for its residential solar projects. U.S. Bancorp recently extended another round of financing to SunRun.One of the projects Borrego will build with the new financing is a 1.2 megawatt system at Madera Community Hospital in Madera, Calif. and a 1.8 megawatt system at San Diego County Water Authority, which estimates savings of nearly $1.7 million over the life of its contract with Borrego.Previous Story: Hulu CEO lukewarm on ad-free versionPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: PPA, SolarCompanies: Borrego Solar, Sunrun Tags: PPA, SolarCompanies: Borrego Solar, SunrunIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.

The second Humble Indie Bundle, a batch of games that players can purchase for whatever amount they want to pay, has raked in a not-quite-so-humble $1.82 million after being on sale for a little more than a week a4" and its host might be looking at a nice $90,000 tip for its efforts. The bundle was on sale for 11 days and was run by Y Combinator-backed Humble Bundle, which launched specifically to organize operations after last year&'s Humble Indie Bundle (put on by a group of indie game developers) ended up being a runaway success. The company apparently plans to put on frequent similar sales going forward. The sales let gamers pick up to five games that are free of copyright protection software, and lets them pay whatever they want for them a4" anywhere from 1 cent to $6,000. After deciding what to pay, gamers can decide what percentage of the fund goes to charity, to the developers and whether to give Humble Bundle a tip for its troubles.Despite being able to pay just a cent, gamers paid an average of $7.83 for the games. Some companies paid enough to get themselves into the top-five contributor space so that they could advertise in the space. Streaming game provider OnLive, for example, paid $5,000 for its Humble Indie Bundle and left its name as &''Play.onlive.com Just Play.&''The standard distribution for each sale gave Humble Bundle around a 5 percent tip. So if most of the buyers went with the default distribution, Humble Bundle could earn a little more than $90,000 for just over a week&'s worth of work hosting and promoting the games. Not a bad Christmas present in exchange for promoting independent games and helping out a few charities. The sale was such a success this year that Humble Bundle included the five games from the last Humble Indie Bundle. Most of them are darlings of the independent game industry, like side-scrolling puzzlegame Braid and survival horror game Penumbra. They are games that didn&'t do poorly with critics by any means, but lacked the promotional firepower that major publishers wield. Braid, for example, scored a 93 out of 100 across 57 critics on review aggregation site Metacritic.Previous Story: Video scanning provider 3VR raises $17M from heavy-hitting investorsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Braid, Humble Indie Bundle, independent gamesCompanies: Humble Bundle, Y Combinator Tags: Braid, Humble Indie Bundle, independent gamesCompanies: Humble Bundle, Y CombinatorMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Have you ever stopped to evaluate your life in terms of small decisions you made that impacted who you are and what you do Decisions such as a left turn here, saying hello to a stranger, picking one place to eat over another Ever wondered what life would be like if you went the other direction, ignored that new person or picked the sub place over the soup placeSimple decisions like these are sometimes the most important choices we can make in our lives. They often seem meaningless at the time, and yet each choice we make leads us down different forks in our life. Sometime they intersect with, and change, the lives of others as well. For Jen McCabe, a small decision that changed her life forever was deciding to drive tired, a decision that could have cost her life, not to mention those of others. Fortunately, Jen&'s decision &8211' and the accident which followed &8211' wasn&'t fatal, but it did destroy her car and shatter her knee. It also made her an entrepreneur. When I met Jen, I was taken back by her direct and real nature. When I pick guests for &''Speaking Of&8230'&'' I look for character and, more important, a story that defines who they are and which might benefit our community if shared.Following Jen&'s small decision to keep driving and not pull over, she had to learn how to walk again and lost her ability to do things for herself for nearly a year. She realized there are thousands of things you take for granted and that you can often feel alone. Those realizations inspired her to co-found a company called Contagion Health that produced imoveyou.com, a exercise challenge site for helping those that you love get the motivation they need to get their health on track again.Jen won&'t drive tired again, but she wouldn&'t change what happened to her. It helped to define who she is and what she wants to do with her life.Video below (with some awesome advice for entrepreneurs towards the end).CrunchBase InformationJen McCabeInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

With Web 2.0 Summit now over, looking back, in my mind, easily the best panel was the one entitled Point of Control: Finance. It featured venture capitalists John Doerr (Kleiner Perkins) and Fred Wilson (Union Square Ventures) talking with New York Magazine&'s John Heilemann about the state of both investing and the state of the web ecosystem at large. What made it so interesting is that Wilson and Doerr clearly don&'t agree on many of the big issues. This was best exemplified during the portion of the talk when the two give their views on where we are now. While Wilson worries that we may be in the midst of the next &''bubble&'', Doerr thinks of it as a &''boom&''. They&'re both talking about the same thing, they just view it completely different ways. Then they go into starting companies on the east coast versus the west coast, the state of angel investing, iPhone versus Android, Facebook versus the web, Google&'s ability to innovate, ideas versus innovation, investing in Twitter, etc. Watch it all above, things start to get more heated about 20 minutes in.And here are the links to posts they reference:A VC: Storm CloudsSilicon Valley&'s IPO AnxietyBizDev 2.0CrunchBase InformationJohn DoerrFred WilsonInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
