(Credit:Google)Apple has removed a WikiLeaks app from its App Store just a few short days after its release.Launched on December 17, the $1.99 WikiLeaks App offered access to the whistleblower site and the @wikileaks Twitter stream and was described as providing "'instant access to the world's most documented leakage of top secret memos and other confidential government documents," according to a Google cached version of the site provided by TechCrunch. The app was created by a third-party development firm called Hint Solutions, which lists Igor Barinov as its general manager. But as of late last night, Barinov had confirmed both in his own Twitter feed and in an e-mail to TechCrunch that Apple has removed the WikiLeaks app from sale without further explanation at this point. The move isn't surprising given both the controversy over WikiLeaks and Apple's tight control over which apps it feels are suitable for the App Store. In response to our query about why Apple took down the app, Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller relayed the following statement to CNET:"We removed the WikiLeaks app from the App Store because it violated our developer guidelines. Apps must comply with all local laws and may not put an individual or targeted group in harm's way."After publishing thousands of sensitive U.S. State Department and Pentagon documents, WikiLeaks roused the ire of the U.S. government, which claimed that the release of such information undermines national security. The resulting uproar prompted several companies, including Amazon, MasterCard, Visa, and PayPal to shut off access to WikiLeaks, triggering a wave of cyberattacks from "hactivists" in support of the whistleblowing site. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange remains out on bail following his recent arrest in London, wanted for questioning by Swedish authorities over allegations of sexual assault.Update 9:30 a.m. PT:Added statement from Apple.

0 Vote(s)

Cell phones with sophisticated cameras are already being fitted with microscopes for mobile, in-the-field testing. Connecting microfluids to these cell phones, however, has proved to be its own challenge. The Fit-to-Flow connector next to a USB flash drive for scale.(Credit:Tingrui Pan/UC Davis)So biomedical engineers at UC Davis have developed what they call a Fit-to-Flow fluid connector (F2F for short) they compare to the USB interface, through which microfluids can be connected to electronic devices for biological and chemical testing. They filed a provisional patent on November 1 and published a paper describing the chip on November 25 in the journal Lab on a Chip."We think there is a huge need for an interface to bridge microfluidics to electronic devices," says Tingrui Pan, assistant professor of biomedical engineering at UC Davis who, with graduate student Arnold Chen, invented the chip and co-authored the paper.Pan says their connector, which uses tiny channels a few micrometers across cut into a plastic membrane, should be able to be integrated with a standard peripheral component interconnect (PCI) device, with an embedded micropump providing the on-demand self-propelled power.By using a standard connection, chips for different tests could be plugged into the same device, such as a laptop or cell phone, to test, display, store, and transmit the data. The potential uses for this kind of microfluidic connector could span several fields and include medical diagnoses, food safety testing, and environmental monitoring. The work was funded through a UC Davis fellowship to Chen and a National Science Foundation Career Award to Pan.

0 Vote(s)

Consumer Reports predicts that the 2011 Chrysler Town & Country will be the worst car for reliability.(Credit:Josh Miller/CNET)Consumer Reports published predictions for reliability of 2011 vehicle models based on whatcar owners told it of previous model year performance. Consumer Reports' survey asked 1.3 million owners to rate the reliability of their 2001 to 2010 model year cars. Using that data, the organization devised predictions of where different brands will end up with their 2011 models.Scion topped the list, while co-brands Toyota and Lexus both dropped a little from the previous year, probably due to all the flap over unintended acceleration. Porsche showed up second with a 6 point gain from the previous year. It was followed by perennial quality winners Acura and Honda.Hitting the very bottom of the list was Chrysler, with its Town & Country minivan being rated as the worst car for reliability. Audi, which plummeted in reliability appears just above Chrysler, and is followed by Mini. Audi also showed the largest overall drop in reliability, while Cadillac had the biggest gain.Consumer Reports Predicted 5 Best 2011 ModelsRankMakeBest modelWorst modelPercent change1ScionxDxB-2PorscheBoxster91163AcuraRLTL (AWD)24HondaCR-VElement-25InfinitiG sedan (AWD)G coupe-1Consumer Reports Predicted 5 Worst 2011 ModelsRankMakeBest modelWorst modelPercent change23BMWM3135i-224DodgeRam 1500 (2WD)Journey125MiniCooper HatchbackCooper Convertible-326AudiA4 (4-cyl.)A6 (3.0T)*-727Chrysler300 (V8)Town & Country-1(Source: Consumer Reports)

0 Vote(s)

The Semiconductor Industry Association held its annual dinner for a thousand industry executives on Thursday night in San Jose, Calif. At the event, the group&'s new president, Brian Toohey (left) laid out the industry&'s political agenda in the wake of the Republican victories in this week&'s national election.Toohey warned that the economy is weak and faltering and could create a negative environment for investing in the semiconductor industry, the backbone of Silicon Valley. His voice will be one among many lobbyists in Washington, D.C., but the SIA has had a three-decade long history of being influential, loud and relevant in political circles.John Daane (right), chief executive of Altera and outgoing chairman of the SIA, spoke just before Toohey. Daane warned that, in a time of economic malaise, it might be easy for politicians to view spending on research and development as an expense. But he said that the industry will try hard to convince Washington that R&amp'D is an investment. He warned that the U.S. stands to lose its leadership in technology if it doesn&'t continue to invest in basic science.Daane also warned that the U.S. has the second-highest corporate tax rate in the world. The Republicans are likely to beat back attempts to expand corporate taxes, but Daane said the chip industry believes that it can create jobs in the U.S., given the right tax incentives and tax relief. If the U.S. doesn&'t make its tax policies more corporate-friendly, it risks losing investments in multibillion-dollar chip factories to other countries. (Intel is spending $6 &8211' $8 billion on U.S. factories in the coming years, but it also just opened a $2.5 billion chip factory in China).Chip makers are also worried that the Environmental Protection Agency&'s new rules on monitoring greenhouse gas emissions could cost the industry millions of dollars in new equipment purchases at each factory in the U.S. Even worse, the permits for new chip factories could take 12 &8211' 18 months to complete, an incredibly long time when the construction time is a year or two and industry economic cycles fluctuate on a yearly basis.Toohey echoed a lot of Daane&'s concerns and said he held out hope that the U.S. would find the resources to invest in R&amp'D, attract capital spending on chip factories, improve its university and K-12 education, and tread lightly on taxation. The chip industry has 185,000 employees in the country and enables a $1.1 trillion electronics industry that employs 6 million people. But to keep creating jobs in the U.S., the federal government will have to out-compete foreign governments that are trying to foster their own Silicon Valleys around the world. It will be interesting to see the reaction in Washington, D.C., to the chip industry&'s wish list, given the economy&'s woes and record deficits.Toohey, former head of the pharmaceutical industry&'s lobbying group, replaced retiring SIA president George Scalise (right' his video speech is also below). Scalise was honored with the industry&'s highest honor, the Robert N. Noyce award before the crowd at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, Calif. In hopes of gaining more political clout, the SIA has moved its headquarters to the nation&'s capital.Chip makers are coming off a great year, with revenues of $300 billion, up 32.8 percent from a year ago. But sales are expected to slow down to 6 percent growth in 2011 and 3.4 percent in 2012.Check out our video of Toohey&'s talk below as well as Scalise&'s farewell speech.Next Story: Is it downhill for the chip industry now Wall Street thinks so (video) Previous Story: Hsieh: Corporate culture should be a top priorityPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: chips, semiconductorsCompanies: Semiconductor Industry AssociationPeople: Brian Toohey, George Scalise, John Daane Tags: chips, semiconductorsCompanies: Semiconductor Industry AssociationPeople: Brian Toohey, George Scalise, John DaaneDean is lead writer for GamesBeat at VentureBeat.
Good news, aspiring film auteurs: Online retail giant Amazon.com has announced its plans to start Amazon Studios. The venture, part contest and part investment fund, is inviting filmmakers and scriptwriters to submit their movies and screenplays. The studio will give away $2.7 million in cash prizes, in addition to developing a top project as a full commercial film through a deal with Warner Bros. From filmmakers, the studio is looking for submissions of &''test movies&'' &8212' full-length, low-budget amateur movies made from an original script or a script submitted as a part of the contest. From screenwriters, it&'s seeking original movie scripts. The best movie script will receive $100,000, while the best movie will bag $1 million. All submitted scripts and movies can be reviewed by fans on Amazon Studios&8216' website, where the company has also produced and posted five sample movies potential participants can take inspiration from. Judges on the panel include the screenwriter of &''Top Gun&'', Jack Epps, Jr., and &''Face/Off&'', Mike Werb, along with Mark Gill, the former president of Miramax. To keep its content submissions &''rookie-level,&'' the company is asking entrants to give Amazon 18 months of exclusive rights, something it doesn&'t expect working Hollywood filmmakers and scriptwriters to adhere to.While somewhat of an uncharacteristic move by an e-commerce company, it&'s not out of Amazon&'s ambit. Last year, the company had a similar contest asking submissions of TV commercials advertising its Kindle product, and earlier this year, a contest for budding novel authors to win a publishing contract.Submissions end Dec. 31, 2011, when the company will announce its major cash prize winners. Until then, it will also be giving away minor awards every month throughout next year.Next Story: Gaikai kicks off its beta for cloud-based game streaming Previous Story: Meebo closes $25M in funding as content sharing gets hotterPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Amateur, Amazon Studios, contest, Filmmakers, movie, Scriptwriters, StudioCompanies: Amazon, Warner Brothers Tags: Amateur, Amazon Studios, contest, Filmmakers, movie, Scriptwriters, StudioCompanies: Amazon, Warner BrothersSid Yadav is a contributor to VentureBeat.
Zio Studios, a 45-person animation and gaming startup based in Bogot, Colombia, has announced that local venture capital firm Promotora, has invested $1.3M in the company in a first round of institutional funding. According to CEO Alejandro Gonzalez, the new funding will allow Zio Studios to execute on its vision of combining social media and 3D gaming.Zio Studios includes post-production and animation divisions as well as a gaming unit called Brainz, which recently released a public beta of Social Street Soccer for Facebook. Though untested, some game publishers such as RockYou, with its recent acquisition of TirNua, are pursuing a similar vision of combining 3D gaming and social media.Though social games have been popular with casual gamers, Gonzalez says there is a sizable market for players looking for something that combines the advantages of social media with the immersive experience of 3D games. Zio Studios plans to launch games that can be played on a multitude of platforms, including mobile devices.Latin American gaming companies have been in the news quite a bit recently. For example, Argentina-based Three Melons was recently acquired by Playdom. Also, within the past year, Brazilian startup Vostu closed a $30M round and Mentez (also from Brazil) closed a round for an undisclosed amount. This round follows an investment of $200,000 last year from angel investor Mauricio Bejarano, a former executive of Los Angeles startup XDrive (now defunct). The new funding will allow the company to double its staff (including sales), launch several new titles and open an office in California.Alejandro Gonzalez and Mauricio BejaranoPrevious Story: Ticketfly: Facebook really does fuel ticket salesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: 3D, Colombia, social gamingCompanies: Promotora, Zio StudiosPeople: Alejandro Gonalez Tags: 3D, Colombia, social gamingCompanies: Promotora, Zio StudiosPeople: Alejandro GonalezAlan Colmenares has more than 20 years' experience working within the technology industry as a writer, sales professional and venture capitalist.
