A Samsung hard drive.(Credit:Samsung)Samsung plans to sell its hard-drive business, a new report claims. The electronics company would like to make $1.5 billion on the sale, but it might take less than $1 billion, The Wall Street Journal is reporting, citing an anonymous source. The source told the Journal that, in no uncertain terms, "Samsung is trying to get rid of [its HDD operation]," and one of its chief competitors, Seagate, is a potential suitor.Though Samsung has been competing in the hard-disk-drive business for quite some time, the company is still far behind the leaders in that sector. According to research firm iSuppli, Samsung's worldwide HDD market share at the end of 2010 was hovering at around 10 percent. In that same report, which was released in March, iSuppli said that it expected first-quarter 2011 HDD shipments to hit 160.9 million, down nearly 4 percent compared to the fourth quarter of 2010, when 167.5 million HDDs were shipped. iSuppli said that "weaker industry conditions," namely the fact that smartphones andtablets don't use hard drives for their storage needs, make "organic sales growth...more difficult to achieve, prompting HDD suppliers to engage in acquisitions to gain market share."Those acquisitions have already started. In March, Western Digital agreed to acquire Hitachi's hard-disk-drive unit for $4.3 billion. Once the acquisition is approved, Western Digital will control nearly 50 percent of the HDD business. Seagate, its closest competitor, owns about 30 percent of the market. And now it might be that company's turn to keep pace with an acquisition of its own.According to the Journal's source, Samsung plans to use the cash it would raise in the sale of its hard-drive business in markets where it might have a better chance of succeeding. The source did not say which markets Samsung would like to focus on.Both Samsung and Seagate declined to comment on the report.Update at 10:10 a.m. PTto include Samsung and Seagate statements.

0 Vote(s)

Could the iPad 2 trigger an oversupply of competing tablets(Credit:James Martin/CNET)Demand for theiPad 2, which goes on sale tomorrow, could hurt rivaltablet makers by sticking them with an oversupply of products they may not be able to sell. That's the outlook of J.P. Morgan Research analyst Mark Moskowitz, who yesterday voiced his opinions in an investors report, which was sent to CNET.In a race to catch up with the iPad 2 and gain ground in the tablet market, other manufacturers will rev up the launches of their own devices. But they could hit an oversupply bubble during the second half of this year, says the analyst.Apple and its rivals will collectively build around 81 million tablets for 2011, according to projections by J.P. Morgan. But Moskowitz's forecast calls for only 47.9 million tablets to actually ship this year, leaving many companies with a glut of products stuck in their warehouses. Even accounting for a potential 20 percent dip in the estimate of 81 million would still leave 65.1 million tablets looking for buyers. Overall, the analyst believes that supply could outstrip demand by 17.2 million tablets."In our view, the technical and form factor improvements of the iPad 2 stand to make it tougher for the first generation of competitive offerings to play catch-up, meaning actual shipments could fall well short of plan," Moskowitz wrote in the report.Beyond the tablet makers, manufacturers of individual hardware components also stand to lose by building too many parts for vendors eager to secure them in case the tablet market really jumps."Based on our research inputs, tablet makers eager to emulate Apple's meteoric start are trying to secure components with inflated build plans," Moskowitz wrote. "There appears to be a concern among makers that certain components will not be available if tablets take off. Of note, glass displays, processors, and, to a lesser extent, NAND Flash are the components that could be most at risk."Worries about a market oversupply of tablets and components have hurt semiconductor company ARM, which designs chips for the iPad and other devices, according to Bloomberg. Its shares today took their biggest tumble over the past five months based on fears that the stock may be overpriced and that sales of tablets may not meet expectations. With the iPad 2 about to land in consumers' hands, competing tablet makers are still plotting their next moves.Samsung, which released its 7-inch Galaxy Tab late last year, is reportedly set to unveil an 8.9-inch model to join the 10-inch tablet it demoed at Mobile World Congress last month. BlackBerry maker Research In Motion is readying its new PlayBook tablet, with some reports saying the device will launch next month. RIM also is planning to release two more tablets before the year is over. And HP has gotten into the act, with its new TouchPad reportedly reaching consumers in April. Those and many other tablets will join Motorola's new Xoom, which went on sale just two weeks ago.But Moskowitz believes most of the Apple rivals will face a rough market, especially from consumers who'll be looking for a lot from any iPad rival."We have a favorable view of Apple's products and operating model, but given the extraordinary success of the company over the last decade, there are holdouts just as there were with Microsoft before Linux," wrote the analyst. "We think these holdouts will be underwhelmed by the tablet alternatives. Aside from Motorola's Xoom and HP's TouchPad (which does not have a price tag yet), the competitive offerings appear to be light on attraction, in our view."

0 Vote(s)

Go for the perfect 20, Doc!(Credit:Ocean House Media)Unless you live in a world of abject hate and misery, you probably know that yesterday was the birthday of my spirit animal, Justin Bieber. And as I mentioned yesterday, my own birthday is coming St. Patrick's Day, along with an Angry Birds update just for me.But this isn't about me or Das Biebs. It's about a wonderful man named Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known to everyone without a heart of stone as Dr. Suess, writer and illustrator of some of the finest whimsical childrens' books ever, including "The Cat in the Hat" and "Green Eggs and Ham." He was born 107 years ago today. And as if by magic, the good doctor's books-as-apps foriPad by Ocean House Media in the App Store are trending. In fact, 16 of the 20 Top Books listed today are his works. They're $2.99, and if you've got kids, or just want to take a high-tech revisit to your unworried youth, it's a good price. Also, I'm not sorry I didn't write this post in the style of Suess.
Apple is targeting a MacBook Air update for this summer that will include a move to Intel's Sandy Bridge processors, CNET has learned. MacBook Air(Credit:Apple)Initial shipments of Intel's Sandy Bridge processor were snafued on January 31 by a minor glitch in the accompanying chipset, though the chipmaker will resume shipments of fixed chipsets as early as mid-month. The Sandy Bridge processor itself is not affected. The MacBook Air refresh is expected in June, according to a source familiar with Apple's plans. An Apple representative declined to comment on the company's Sandy Bridge plans. A Sandy Bridge processor would be a welcome addition to the MacBook Air, which currently uses a Core 2 Duo chip, essentially the same basic processor technology the Air has used since its introduction three years ago. That three-year span puts Core 2 Duo chips two generations behind Sandy Bridge. The MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Pro also use Core 2 Duo processors. MacBook Pros are reportedly also slated for an update, but that is expected to come earlier, possibly in March. It is not clear if these systems would use Sandy Bridge (aka, Second-Generation Intel Core Processor). If they do, it's worth noting that the Sandy Bridge issue has thrown shipment schedules back by a few weeks. PC makers are eager to ship systems--already announced--with the latest Intel processor because it speeds up gaming graphics and multimedia tasks over current Intel silicon at little or no extra cost. This is due to the fact that the graphics silicon is built directly onto the main processor--a first for a mainstream Intel chip. Apple, which has yet to annnounce any Sandy Bridge systems, would reap similar benefits.

0 Vote(s)

GreatCall, the maker of the Jitterbug phone for seniors, introduced a new personal security service for its customers last week atCES 2011. Called 5Star, the service is designed to address security and health concerns that don't necessarily merit calling 911. For example, if you're walking alone in a park at night, you might feel unsafe, but there's no immediate need to call the police. If you have the 5Star service on your Jitterbug phone, you can call them to at least have someone there on the line. And if something does happen, 5Star will be able to triangulate your location via the phone's GPS and contact the appropriate authorities. The 5Star service can also be used for answering your health or medical concerns. If you so choose, you can set up a health profile on the GreatCall Web site with your doctor's contact as well as any medical plan or medication information. You can then call up the 5Star service any time you have a health question, and the answer will be personalized to your particular situation. If the 5Star call does escalate to a 911 emergency, the service will automatically reach 911 dispatch, and provide emergency responders with your health profile. It will also contact your relatives if you have that information set up on your account. The service is not cheap at $14.99 a month on top of regular monthly payments, but it's designed as a premium service for those who want the additional security. It will be available for all Jitterbug customers in February.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Screenshot by Joe Aimonetti)App maker Occipital has provided a working demo of Apple's newly integrated gyroscope support in MobileSafari using images created by 360 Panorama, Occipital's great panoramic photography App for iOS 4.2.The site, when visited by an iOS device with a gyroscope and running iOS 4.2.1, allows users to view photographs taken with the 360 Panorama App by simply moving their device. Based on youriPhone's orientation the photograph will follow. I had to keep my iPhone fairly vertical in order for the gyroscope to read properly, but the experience was pretty fun considering I had to spin around in my chair to see the entire photograph. With Occipital's software, users can create an entire 360-degree image and share it with friends via Twitter, email, or to their Camera Roll for viewing later.According TNW Apps interviewing Occipital co-founder Vikas Reddy, 360 Panorama has been the number one photography App in Apple's App Store in the U.S. and 20 other countries, has had over 20,000 panoramas uploaded to Twitter, and is expected to reach over 800,000 panorama views by the end of December. This video shows off 360 Panorama's amazing effect: Certainly the ability to access the gyroscope in Mobile Safari will give Web developers greater depth when deciding how to utilize iPhone's unique properties as an application and game device. The 360 Panorama test is just the beginning of what is sure to be a popular trend in mobile Web development.Even in low light, 360 Panorama takes a fun photograph.(Credit:Image by Joe Aimonetti)What other applications should use the gyroscope functionality in Mobile Safari Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

0 Vote(s)

Google Latitude for iPhone(Credit:iTunes)Nearly two years after Google announced its Latitude for tracking friends' locations, the service is available as an application for iOS.Google had promised the Latitude app would arrive on iPhones "very soon" when the service debuted in February 2009. But Apple blocked the initial plan to release a Latitude app "to avoid confusion with Maps on theiPhone," in Google's words, so Google released a Web-app version instead some months later.Apple also blocked the native Google Voice app, and Google took the same approach of creating a Web-app version. That action helped trigger a Federal Communications Commission look at Apple's App Store approval policies, and an even frostier relationship between the two erstwhile corporate allies. However, in September, Apple liberalized and codified its App Store rules, making it clearer what would be allowed or barred and reopening the doors to an Adobe Systems technology under which Flash-derived apps were rebuilt as native iOS apps. The Google Voice app for iPhone arrived in November. The free Google Latitude application, available in 27 languages, works on the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, third-generation and fourth-generationiPod Touch, andiPad.Google Latitude iPhone app&39's friend list (Credit:iTunes)

0 Vote(s)

The entire Beatles&39' catalogue is now in iTunes. At long last, the works of the Beatles are available in iTunes. The digital content is exclusive to iTunes, a representative of The Beatles' record company, EMI, told CNET. The exact length of that deal is unknown, but it will expire some time next year. As of now, the iconic band's entire catalog can be purchased in Apple's iTunes Store. Each album comes with iTunes LP, which features additional content including lyrics, photos, and album art. A digital version of the Fab Four's entire body of work is also available for download for $149, and that comes with exclusive access to a video of the band's first U.S. concert, "Live at the Washington Coliseum, 1964." Single albums are priced at $12.99, double albums at $19.99. Songs will cost $1.29 each. This is a personal victory for Apple CEO Steve Jobs, as The Beatles were one of the most prominent holdouts from his online music empire. Apple had tried for years to acquire rights to The Beatles' catalog."We love the Beatles and are honored and thrilled to welcome them to iTunes," said Jobs in a press release today. "It has been a long and winding road to get here. Thanks to the Beatles and EMI, we are now realizing a dream we've had since we launched iTunes ten years ago."Apple hyped up the announcement over the last 24 hours with a splash page on its Web site promising that "tomorrow is just another day. That you'll never forget." After several hours of tech news sites buzzing about what the company could have up its sleeve, The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple would finally announce an agreement to offer The Beatles' music. In a press release from Apple, and EMI, each of the surviving Beatles members or a representative was quoted about the news.Paul McCartney: "We're really excited to bring the Beatles' music to iTunes. It's fantastic to see the songs we originally released on vinyl receive as much love in the digital world as they did the first time around."Ringo Starr: "I am particularly glad to no longer be asked when the Beatles are coming to iTunes. At last, if you want it--you can get it now--The Beatles from Liverpool to now! Peace and Love, Ringo."Yoko Ono Lennon: "In the joyful spirit of Give Peace A Chance, I think it is so appropriate that we are doing this on John's 70th birthday year."Olivia Harrison: "The Beatles on iTunes--Bravo!" The release of the band's music online marks the end of a long journey for both EMI and Apple. The two battled in courtrooms for years over a trademark dispute: Apple Corps, The Beatles' record company, versus Apple Inc.In 1991, the two updated a 10-year-old agreement regarding how each of them would be allowed to use its trademarks. Apple Inc. (at the time known as Apple Computer Inc.) paid Apple Corps $27 million and agreed not to enter the music distribution business under the Apple name and logo. Apple Corps later said that the computer maker broke that agreement by opening the iTunes Store, and sued in 2003. Apple Computer eventually emerged victorious when a U.K. judge ruled that it was not in violation of the agreement because it was selling prerecorded content, not original music under the logo. The dispute was officially resolved in 2007, when a new deal replaced the 1991 agreement, which prohibited Apple Inc. from distributing music through physical media such as CDs and cassette tapes. CNET's Greg Sandoval contributed to this report.

0 Vote(s)

Now that 2010 is almost over, we&'re looking back at the year in tech business news. Any &''top stories&'' list that&'s not based purely on traffic is going to be ridiculously subjective, but with the help of VentureBeat&'s writers, I&'ve tried to focus on the news that had the biggest effect on the tech world and drew the most interest from readers, while also touching on the biggest companies and trends of the year. Here&'s the list, in chronological order.Google struggles in China &8212' After failing to make headway in China, the search giant threatened to pull out of the country unless it could deliver uncensored search results. The threat seemed to elicit an indifferent response from Chinese entrepreneurs, and Google eventually found a workaround, first by automatically redirecting Chinese users to its uncensored Hong Kong website, then eventually pointing those users to the Hong Kong site through a link.Super angels take flight &8212' A number of high-profile angel investors grew bigger wings this year by raising funds from outside investors. These &''super angels&'', which include Dave McClure&'s 500 Startups, Mike Maples Jr.&'s Floodgate, and Chris Sacca&'s Lowercase Capital, tout themselves as more agile than traditional venture firms. They were also embroiled in a minor scandal when TechCrunch Editor Michael Arrington accused many of them of colluding to keep valuations low.HP buys Palm &8212' Following a bidding war, the computer-maker purchased the struggling Palm for $1.2 billion. Everyone assumed that Palm&'s webOS operating system would boost HP&'s mobile efforts, though the initial results seem more promising for tablets than they do for phones.Facebook faces privacy backlash &8212' As Facebook became more aggressive in its use of social data, critics grew louder and louder. We argued that if nothing else, chief executive Mark Zuckerberg needs to do a better job of explaining his position on privacy. Yet attempts to convince users to quit Facebook flopped, traffic continued to climb, and Facebook crossed the 500 million user mark.Applea4a4s iPad shows tablet competitors how ita4a4s done &8212' When Apple released the iPad in April, the device seemed to live up to the insane hype, both in quality and sales numbers. Other major tech companies are developing their own tablets, but J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz predicts that Apple will stay on top, at least until 2012.Tesla Motors goes public &8212' The high-profile electric car-maker held its initial public offering in June and also announced multiple deals with Toyota, but its financial future remains murky. The company is still losing money, and it said it doesn&'t expect to break even until 2012. Meanwhile, chief executive Elon Musk got into a verbal battle with VentureBeat&'s Executive Editor Owen Thomas, with Musk calling my boss &''Silicon Valley&'s Jayson Blair,&'' while Owen suggested that Musk has a problem with honesty.Mark Hurd leaves Hewlett Packard &8212' Hurd was pressured by the company&'s board into resigning his post as CEO. The issue appeared to be Hurd&'s relationship with former HP contractor and softcore porn actress Jodie Fisher, with the Wall Street Journal reporting that Hurd leaked news about an HP acquisition to Fisher. Outspoken Oracle CEO Larry Ellison criticized HP&'s decision and later hired Hurd as co-president.Facebook goes to Hollywood in The Social Network &8212' The David Fincher-directed film received almost universally positive reviews and is now considered the front-runner for the Best Picture Oscar. Zuckerberg and other early employees took issue with the movie&'s negative portrayal of the company and especially of Zuckerberg, but it doesn&'t seem like the film&'s success has had a serious effect on Facebook&'s reputation.iPhone vs. Android &8212' Once-allied companies Apple and Google have grown increasingly combative in their competition for the smartphone market. Android seems to have the greater reach, with 300,000 activations a day, though the iPhone 4 is seeing tremendous sales too. Google CEO Eric Schmidt, a former Apple board member, has joined the chorus of companies criticizing Apple for being too closed, a claim that Apple CEO Steve Jobs called &''disingenuous&''.Internet companies join US crackdown on WikiLeaks &8212' When WikiLeaks, the site for leaked government documents, came under fire from the US government, it found few friends in the tech world. Amazon.com booted the site off its online hosting service, PayPal stopped processing payments to WikiLeaks, and Apple removed a WikiLeaks app from its App Store. However, hackers came to the site&'s &''defense&'', attacking services that had cut off WikiLeaks.Next Story: When Tesla&'s lockup expires Monday, will its stock drop Short sellers think so Previous Story: FCC to approve Comcast-NBC merger with some conditionsPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Android, China, iPad, iPhone, iPhone 4, tabletsCompanies: 500 Startups, Amazon.com, Apple, Facebook, Floodgate, Google, Hewlett Packard, HP, Lowercase Capital, Palm, paypal, Tesla Motors, WikiLeaksPeople: Chris Sacca, Dave McClure, Elon Musk, Eric Schmidt, Mark Hurd, Mark Zuckerberg, Mike Maples Jr., Steve Jobs Tags: Android, China, iPad, iPhone, iPhone 4, tabletsCompanies: 500 Startups, Amazon.com, Apple, Facebook, Floodgate, Google, Hewlett Packard, HP, Lowercase Capital, Palm, paypal, Tesla Motors, WikiLeaksPeople: Chris Sacca, Dave McClure, Elon Musk, Eric Schmidt, Mark Hurd, Mark Zuckerberg, Mike Maples Jr., Steve JobsAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Project Titan is coming. On Monday. That&'s what we&'ve heard from sources with knowledge of Facebook&'s secret mail project. And since we broke that news, there has been a lot of speculation about what domain Facebook might use for these new email addresses. Currently, the popular choice is fb.com. But while it seemed like Facebook acquired it earlier this year, no one knew for sure. Now it looks like we do.As the site Domain Name Wire points out, the Whois record for the domain name has just been updated. While Markmonitor.com is still listed as the registrar name, Facebook is all over the records now as well. Most importantly, the domain namespace servers are now pointing to facebook.com. And Facebook is listed as both the administrative and technical contact. All of this doesn&'t mean that Facebook will use the domain for their mail project, of course. But the timing is interesting, obviously. AllFacebook also reports that Facebook is using fb.com internally now.Markmonitor.com is a service used by many big-name clients to hide their domain transactions. It was thought that fb.com sold to Facebook in September, but no one knew for sure because of this mask. But the nameserver change doesn&'t lie. Facebook is the father!More:a4sHmm, Why Is Mail.Facebook.Com Pointing To An Outlook Web Appa4sLogin[thanks Andrew]CrunchBase InformationFacebookInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
