Microsoft raised objections to Google's plans to buy some 6,000 patents held by bankrupt Nortel Networks over concerns the search giant might change the terms of Microsoft's worldwide, perpetual, royalty-free license to those patents.Microsoft raised the issue in a filing with a Delaware bankruptcy court, which was reported by Reuters. Microsoft wants its existing agreements to be transferred to Google or any other company that acquires the patents.Google, which will likely face competing bids, offered more than $900 million for the patent portfolio from the bankrupt Canadian telecom-equipment maker. The patents cover technology that includes wireless video, Wi-Fi, and LTE mobile data technology. Reuters reported that Google would be given the right to terminate Nortel's existing agreements if it acquires the patents."Microsoft wants any new owners of the Nortel patents to be subject to Nortel's existing commitments to Standards Setting Organizations and to Microsoft," the company said in a statement. "By making this filing, Microsoft preserves its ability to raise this issue with the bankruptcy court in the event the final buyer of the Nortel assets seeks to disclaim any of these commitments."Reuters noted that Hewlett-Packard, Nokia and Motorola Mobility also filed objections over the terms of the sale.Earlier this month, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Justice Department's antitrust division was probing the bidding for the patents. The agency, which found nothing yet to take any action over, is worried that the winning bidder could use the patents to quash competition. The Journal reported that the Justice Department was particularly concerned about Google and Apple winning the bidding.

0 Vote(s)

Nissan Motor has received complaints from owners that its Leaf electric car on occasion fails to start, posing a potential setback for the automaker's goal of promoting zero-emission vehicles.Japan's No.2 automaker said today it is looking into the exact cause, which it traced back to the Leaf's air-conditioning unit. Nissan is investigating whether the glitch was in a certain component or the programing, spokesman Toshitake Inoshita said.Nissan Leaf(Credit:Nissan)Nissan plans no recall for now since the issue does not affect safety but will decide how to proceed after identifying the source of the problem, he said."When we know the exact cause, we will decide whether to issue a service bulletin, or take other steps," Inoshita said.He added that the phenomenon was reported in both the United States and Japan, although he did not have an exact figure for the number of complaints.Nissan and its French partner Renault are aiming to become leaders in the nascent field of electric vehicles, which plug into an electric outlet to power thecar's batteries and have no tailpipe emissions.Nissan launched the five-seater Leaf in Japan and the United States in December. It sold more than 3,300 units in Japan as of February and delivered another 452 in the United States through March.Production at Nissan's Oppama plant south of Tokyo, where the Leaf is made, resumed today on a normal basis--from supplier-delivered parts--for the first time in a month, after it was halted by a devastating earthquake that rocked northeast Japan on March 11.

0 Vote(s)

For the past half-decade, a gang of well-connected entrepreneurs who worked together at online-payments startup PayPal have quietly built a string of successful Internet companies. At last, with Linkedin, public-market investors can get a piece of the action. Not since Peter Thiel took PayPal itself public in 2002, ending a post-dotcom bubble drought in the IPO market, has this group produced a publicly traded company. Now LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman is playing a part in a similar revival of the market for hot tech startups.Hoffman&'s baby, LinkedIn, a social network for business professionals, has finally filed to go public a4" ending months of speculation as to whether it would beat Facebook to the stock market.LinkedIn is a social networking site for business types looking to expand their professional networks. The site suggests potential business contacts and lets users build out extensive profiles with work experience and recommendations. The site makes money off its premium services a4" which make it easier to contact other business professionals a4" and by slapping advertisements on the site. According to its S-1 filing, the company has lost money for the past several years, but is on track to be profitable this year. The PayPal crew, so tight they&'ve been dubbed a &''mafia&'' by Fortune and others, has seen a good bit of success since eBay bought the company just a few months after it went public, making many of them wealthy enough to back other entrepreneurs.Since starting LinkedIn, Hoffman has invested in the likes of Zynga, Digg, Last.fm, and a number of other startups. Thiel, PayPal&'s CEO, was one of Facebook&'s earliest investors. David Sacks, formerly the COO of PayPal, started up a collaboration service called Yammer that&'s raised $40 million after launching in 2008. Jeremy Stoppelman went on to found local-reviews site Yelp.So far, though, their success has only touched Silicon Valley&'s inside circle. PayPal alumni Steve Chen and Chad Hurley started YouTube, but then sold it to Google, ending the online video&'s site independence before public investors could ever get a piece of it. LinkedIn is the first company started by a member of the PayPal crew that has gone public and is open to investors outside that closed circle of investors and players.PayPal, meanwhile, has become eBay&'s growth engine &8212' leaving some early employees with the feeling that they sold out too early. That chip on the PayPal mafia&'s collective shoulders has been a powerful motivator. Instead of resting on their laurels, they&'ve pushed to rack up a success that outdoes the deal that made them all healthy. And that kind of bravao, in turn, drives investors in Silicon Valley wild. Will the PayPal mafia find a similar fervor on Wall Street With LinkedIn&'s IPO, we&'ll finally get a chance to find out.Next Story: Verizon picks up a bunch of buildings for $1.4B a4"oh, and Terremark too Previous Story: LinkedIn: We&'re powered by obsessivesPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: IPO, PayPal mafiaCompanies: eBay, linkedin, paypal, Yammer, YelpPeople: David Sacks, Jerry Stoppelman, Peter Thiel, Reid Hoffman Tags: IPO, PayPal mafiaCompanies: eBay, linkedin, paypal, Yammer, YelpPeople: David Sacks, Jerry Stoppelman, Peter Thiel, Reid HoffmanMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
