Henrik Scharfe checks out his robot clone Geminoid DK, the perfect stand-in for professors who want to skip class.(Credit:Geminoid.dk)Here's a nifty way to preserve your youth and popularity: get Japanese entertainment company Kokoro to make an ageless robot clone of yourself. Danish academic Henrik Scharfe did just that and his clone looks ready to get out and party. Or perhaps play the villain in a reboot of "Die Hard." Aalborg University's Scharfe (no relation to Alan Rickman) has been working with Kokoro and Japan's Advanced Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR) to create Geminoid DK, a lifelike android copy of himself. DK follows in the silicon footsteps of Geminoids HI-1 and F1, developed in collaboration with Osaka University roboticist Hiroshi Ishiguro, father of the Telenoid robo-fetus. Scharfe plans to test his clone at ATR and then ship it back to the new Geminoid Lab in Denmark, where he presides over Aalborg University's Center for Computer-mediated Epistemology. Geminoids are basically remote-controlled slave robots powered by a quiet air servo system. They mimic the facial expressions, lip movements, and body motions of a human user through motion-tracking gear and an Internet link. As the vid below shows, Scharfe's clone is already quite lifelike. So when it starts projecting his voice and mimicking his idiosyncrasies, students may freak a bit. See more videos and pics here. I love its evil sideways glance. The Geminoid DK page lists the following research subjects for Geminoid: "emotional affordances" in human-robot interaction' blended presence' and cultural differences in the perception of robots.I suspect Scharfe will use his dummy to teach his classes while he sits back in the comfort of his home.
On this special edition of Reporters' Roundtable, CNET Chief Political Correspondent Declan McCullagh hosts a panel discussion on Journalism in the age of WikiLeaks. Sponsored by the The Society of Professional Journalists of Northern California, this discussion covers how WikiLeaks is forcing editors and reporters to rethink traditional journalistic practices. For example, The New York Times, the Guardian, and Der Spiegel were given a mere three weeks to decide how to handle more than 90,000 confidential documents on Afghanistan. Join us as we discuss the challenges journalists face given such information and as we consider the question of the role of professional news organizations when anyone can publish the kind of information that previously was the purview only of established news outlets. We have a great panel of six journalists in this discussion, including reporters and editors from the San Francisco Chronicle, Wired, and Fast Company.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:JVC America)LAS VEGAS--It was a bit unfortunate for JVC that its "world's first consumer camcorder to offer 3D recording in Full HD" came the day after Sony's announcement of its consumer full HD 3D camcorder, the HDR-TD10' it's even similarly named to JVC's offering, the Everio GS-TD1.Like Sony's offering, the JVC model has two of everything that counts: a pair of 3-megapixel BSI CMOS sensors and two f1.2 lenses (5x zoom in 3D, 10x in 2D). It only has a single processing engine--unattractively dubbed "Falconbrid"--but that's just marketing. A single engine can handle the bandwidth if it's designed correctly.Of course, the AVCHD specification doesn't support a full-HD 3D stream, only half-width side-by-side 3D, so JVC has developed a proprietary format it calls "LR Independent format," with a maximum bitrate of 34 megabits per second. The TD1 also has some other 3D-oriented features, including 3D sound, "Optical Axis Automatic Stabilization System for disparity control to give depth to 3D images" (I have no clue what that is) and 3D still photos and time-lapse. It has a 3.5-inch glasses-free 3D touch panel and 64GB of built-in memory. It's slated to ship in March for $1,999.95.

0 Vote(s)

Back in the old days a4"a4ssay, 2004 or soa4sa4"a4sthe only way to get computer games was from retail outlets. Then Valve&'s digital distribution platform Steam came along, allowing gamers to pay for and immediately download games from both Valve and major third parties (it&'s a little like Apple&'s App Store). And it&'s done very well a4" Steam now has over 70% of the digital game distribution market, and some retail stores have gone as far as banning games that install Steam because it&'s eating up so much of their business.WeGame, a 4-man startup that&'s been around since 2007, wants in on the action. Up until now the company has been primarily focused on building software that lets gamers record and share their in-game exploits using screenshot and video capture tools. And now it&'s also launching a digital distribution store that will let gamers pay for and install games, in much the same way they would using Steam. If you want to try it out, you can sign up for the private beta right here.So why would anyone use WeGame instead of Steam Founder Jared Kim says that the current situation a4"a4swhere Value controls so much of the digital distribution market a4"a4sis bad for developers. Valve gets a cut of each sale (even when it&'s selling competitors&' games) and also manages which games get featured in the store. Kim says that WeGame will be a better deal for developers (it will take a smaller cut than Steam) and because it&'s a third party that doesn&'t make games of its own, developers won&'t have to worry about handing over money to a competitor. So far, WeGame has partnerships with Shanda/MochiMedia (who will offer 250 browser-based games), Bigpoint, Perfect World, Subagames, and CMUNE. Down the line it hopes to be distributing AAA titles like Trion Worlda4a4s forthcoming game Rift. For now, all of the games being distributed through WeGame are free to play a4"a4sWeGame is doing revenue share and CPA deals with game publishers to monetize these games. Down the line, it will also introduce transactions, so gamers can purchase software the way they do on Steam.Of course, in order for the marketplace to be attractive for developers, it needs users. WeGame currently has 1.7 million registered users and 1 million installs of its desktop client' around half of these users are active a4"a4snothing to scoff at, but a far cry from Valve&'s 30 million users on steam.WeGame has a long road ahead of it. Kim sounds confident that it will be able to line up quality games (he says publishers are eager to have popular options other than Steam), but it&'ll need to give gamers a compelling reason to make the switch, too. And at this point I don&'t think the integrated screen capture software will offer a very strong incentive.WeGame raised $3.5M back in 2008 from True Ventures, Jeff Clavier, Aydin Senkut, Ariel Poler, Naval Ravikant, and Ryan Scott.CrunchBase InformationWeGameInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
