Microsoft revealed more about the plight of Netbook sales in the age of theiPad during the company's third-quarter earnings conference call today. This follows statements by Intel's chief financial officer earlier in the month. A Toshiba Netbook.(Credit:Toshiba)The Redmond, Wash., software giant said today that the consumer PC market declined 8 percent in the most recent quarter and part of that was "a 40 percent decline in Netbooks," according to a statement by Bill Koefoed, general manager of investor relations, during the earnings conference call. "In total, we estimate the PC market declined 1 percent to 3 percent in the third quarter," he said.At Intel, the story--or at least the emphasis--was different, with the chipmaker reporting strong PC client growth of 17 percent on April 19. In a CNET interview on April 19, Stacy Smith, Intel's chief financial officer, said this about Netbook sales: "The Atom [processor] volume going into Netbooks is pretty flat quarter on quarter. Pretty flat year on year. If there's an impact withtablet cannibalization, it certainly is happening there. But even there it's still a $400 million business for us." Today, Microsoft provided more clarity. Responding to a question from an analyst, Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein explained some of the reasons for the discrepancy between Intel's relatively neutral and/or upbeat statements and Microsoft's more sober interpretation. "There are some unique things going on with Intel's results...There's a few other things in terms of an extra week in the quarter," he said. "They've also excluded netbooks from the PC MPU (microprocessor unit) numbers. And I think there was some appropriate inventory buildup so if you look at our numbers, it ties pretty closely from a unit perspective to what they're seeing. And obviously, we're in line with the big third party analysts as well." The last statement from Microsoft is important. Intel was questioned during its earnings conference call about why it had such robust earnings despite less upbeat analyst numbers. Whatever the case, Apple's iPad is undoubtedly having an effect on Netbook sales, as numerous reports have shown. And Intel may ultimately abet this trend as it points its Atom processor increasingly in the direction of tablets. Via Business Insider.

0 Vote(s)

A lawsuit filed against Apple in Florida last week accuses the company of violating privacy laws, as well as the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, by keeping a log of user locations without offering a way to disable the feature. The suit, which was first reported by Bloomberg, was filed by Vikram Ajjampur and William Devito, both of whom own Apple products. In the suit, the pair, who seek punitive damages and injunctive relief, cite research from Alasdair Allen and Pete Warden about the tracking files found within iOS as the source for Apple's collection techniques. "Users of Apple's iPhones and iPads, including Plaintiffs, were unaware of Apple's tracking their locations and did not consent to such tracking," the suit claims. "Apple collects the location information covertly, surreptitiously and in violations of law." The suit faults Apple specifically for not disclosing that the iOS software records "comprehensive" location data in its iTunes Terms of Service, nor offering end users informed consent of the practice."If Apple wanted to track the whereabouts of each of its products' users, it should have obtained specific, particularized informed consent such that Apple consumers across America would not have been shocked and alarmed to learn of Apple's practices in recent days," the suit says. The suit, which is seeking class action status, aims to have Apple completely disable the feature in the "next-released" version of the operating system. Until that happens, the suit claims Apple is in violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, state laws comparable to the Federal Trade Commission Act, and "common law rights in uniform ways" of the plaintiffs and class members. Apple, which did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the suit, has not officially commented on the location tracking file since it came to light last week. An alleged e-mail exchange between Apple CEO Steve Jobs and a reader of MacRumors surfaced this morning. In it, Jobs purportedly says, "we don't track anyone," and "the info circulating around is false." Apple has not confirmed or commented on the legitimacy of that correspondence. In addition, Apple and Google were targeted today by Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan over location tracking. Madigan seeks a meeting with executives from both companies, as well as answers to her questions about disclosure and purpose of the tracking, and a way to turn the feature off. Madigan's efforts join those of other politicians and government groups who seek to know more about what the companies are doing with the information.

0 Vote(s)

Might the Targa arrive with a 13-megapixel camera(Credit:PhoneArena)With Verizon announcing the release date of the Thunderbolt earlier this morning, the focus shifts again to the horizon. What does the carrier have lined up in the future in terms of Android devices Is it easing off Android now that it's secured theiPhone or is it going to keep its foot on the gas Based on numerous leaks from this week, it appears Verizon doesn't plan on giving up on Android any time soon. The Droid Incredible looks to be the next device to get a refresh now that the Incredible S has been announced. AndroidSpin is among the first to offer pictures of the device bearing Verizon branding across the top, indicating the phone may be in production now.Featuring a 4-inch screen, the Droid Incredible 2 looks more evolution than revolution, largely due to specs that somewhat resemble last year's iteration. The processor gets a slight punch up and the memory increases from 512MB to 768MB but the phone otherwise remains the same.Pictures of three unannounced Motorola phones also have been found online, giving us early glimpses of successors to popular Droid models. What's more, we're learning of a new phone with the code name of Targa, which closely resembles the Droid X with chrome accents.Looking closely at the picture, we can see what appears to be an HDMI output and possibly a 13-megapixel camera with auto-focus. The back clearly states 4G indicating it will be equipped to run on the carrier's LTE network that it's currently deploying. The rest of the details remain a mystery at this point with PhoneArena guessing that the Targa may not arrive until late in the year. Like the Droid Incredible, the Droid X2 and Droid 3 give the outward appearance of minimal change. According to PhoneArena, the keyboard of the Droid 3 is alleged to be better than the current model, although there's no telling exactly how. Unfortunately, the pictures are pretty much all we have at this point, and not even the Droid 3 is shown in an open state. The Droid X2 is said to feature a dual-core processor and the new qHD display that is becoming popular among Motorola devices. With the Droid Bionic and Samsung Stealth already on the map for the next few weeks or months, we may see these new phones slowly scattered across the entire summer. Things may get more interesting once June rolls around and another iPhone is announced. Then we'll see what kind of long-term love Verizon has for Android.

0 Vote(s)

Thin is the line between party and sex party.A few more drinks, a little more Prince, and suddenly what started out as innocent suburban fun turns into debauchery that will be gossiped about for years to come. The makers of a new game for Wii and PS3 called "We Dare" seem to want to help you cross that line. Created by Ubisoft, "We Dare" is, according to Kotaku, a game that may swiftly replace social icebreakers like the key party as the favored Friday night couple-relaxing entertainment in your subdivision. While I wouldn't dream of encouraging such socially divisive behavior, the makers of "We Dare" would like to offer you about 35 "fun and flirtatious" games that will help you relax in the company of Mrs. Galloway from number 47. And her slightly creepy husband who always wears a check cardigan. The "We Dare" trailer is already enjoying so many parody versions posted to YouTube that Ubisoft appears to be scrambling to protect its behind--I mean, copyright (YouTube has already yanked a few of the clips). Some people, though, will be less concerned with Ubisoft's copyright and more concerned about how uber-titillation can make their weekends complete.Well, Kotaku notes that, according to UbiSoft's promotional materials, "We Dare" will offer: "A HILARIOUS LIGHT-HEARTED ATMOSPHERE WITH CLEVER CHARACTERS, COY MINI-GAMES AND INTERNATIONALLY POPULAR MUSIC HITS: SUCH AS 'SEX BOMB, (I'VE HAD THE) TIME OF MY LIFE' AND MANY OTHERS!"Tom Jones and Dirty Dancing all in one night What more could a happy marriage requireNow, there are a couple of slight kinks in "We Dare" that I should mention. While theWii version can handle up to four players, thePS3 version can cope with only two. Which, I suppose, makes the bottom-spanking game a little less experimental.(Credit:Amazon.co.uk)The second is even more troubling. "We Dare" is being offered only in Europe. A UbiSoft representative told me: "The game is not releasing in the U.S." When I wondered whether UbiSoft felt "We Dare" might be the sort of fun a fundamentalist wouldn't appreciate, the rep offered a no comment. The PS3 version of "We Dare" is available for pre-order on Amazon U.K., with a scheduled release date of March 11. And the listing is nothing if not suggestive. The manufacturer's description says you can "use the Wii-mote and PS3 Move controller in unbelievable ways, as you've never imagined before" (which seriously underestimates the imaginative power of the average gamer). It also explains that "some cooperative hugging helps."I am a firm believer in cooperative hugging. I believe there is no other kind. However, once you have cooperatively hugged, there is still more to look forward to: "The final climax of the game ends in a lighthearted, matchmaking session. Which of your friends is your best match for Love or Friendship"That is a question that will be debated, I fear, long into the night in so many homes in the very, very near future.

0 Vote(s)

Microsoft unloaded a dump truck's worth of changes on its Bing service earlier today, and some of the real gems to come out of the lot are the updates to Bing mobile.New to the company'siPhone app--and soon other mobile iterations of Bing--are two very visually impressive, and downright useful additions: a Streetside viewer for local maps, and something called Bing Vision, which adds a way for users to pick out specific words from photos to create a customized Web search. Missing from the update but headed to the app in a future release is the real bit of eye candy: panoramas. If you've ever used Occipital's 360 Panorama app, the idea Microsoft has put into place is pretty similar. You move your phone around and it captures multiple images together into one panorama you can come back and view later. Though unlike Occipital's app, Bing users will have to manually snap shots to have them get stitched together by the software. This necessity ends up giving users a little bit more control when waiting for someone to walk in or out of the frame. Another big difference from competitors is what Microsoft intends to do with the imagery once users have captured it.In Microsoft's own words, it's crowd-sourcing that data, and is in the process of giving anyone with a smartphone a way to get involved. Users can either save a panorama and store it away, or they can upload it for others to see. The options for sharing will include social networks and Bing Maps at large. This, along with a partnership with Everyscape will give businesses and individuals the means to add interior or exterior imagery to the service. CNET got a few minutes following today's announcements to chat with Blaise Aguera y Arcas, Microsoft's architect of Bing Maps and Bing Mobile, who gave us a demo of the new features. In the video below we get a brief look at the new panorama maker, as well as Streetside view and Bing Vision--both of which came as part of today's version 2.0 software update. The panorama maker itself was not a part of that update.

0 Vote(s)

Cho&39's rough sketch of the DDoS bunkers, drawn at the APT conference.(Credit:Credit:Darren Pauli/ZDNet Australia)South Korea has installed digital "bunkers" to prevent a repeat of the massive distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks that crippled parts of the country last year. The nation was floored after huge streams of junk Internet data poured across its networks last year, targeting the infrastructure of government and businesses. "We were caught off-guard," Jinhyun Cho of the Korea Computer Emergency Response Team (KrCERT) told ZDNet Australia. "The whole country knows what a DDoS attack is."A "bunker" in this case is a new IP address served to a business that is under persistent DDoS attack but lacks the funds or resources to protect itself. Traffic from the DDoS attack continues to hit the original IP address while the business remains in operation under a new address.South Korea is continuously under DDoS attack, Cho said, and the bunkers are hoped to help mitigate part of the problem.Read more of "Korea attacks force DDoS bunker creation" at ZDNet Australia.

0 Vote(s)
