13-year-old Rebecca Black must be wondering about the deeper machinations of the human mind this weekend. Especially the human mind as it reveals itself online.Black, in case you have recently been arrested for grand larceny, has become one of the most talked about and railed upon individuals online in mere days. All she did was get a couple of thousand dollars from her parents in order to make a music video. The words of the song--called "Friday"--are so banal they're almost wonderful. Here's my favorite sample: "Partyin', partyin' (Yeah), Partyin', partyin' (Yeah), Fun, fun, fun, fun, Lookin' forward to the weekend." Please don't tell me you didn't sing (or even write) something equally florid when you were 13.For reasons beyond any analysis Wittgenstein could muster, Black's music video has enjoyed more than 22 million YouTube views. Black told ABC's "Good Morning America" that she knew it could be big when it went from 4,000 views to 70,000 in one evening. But perhaps she couldn't have imagined just what kind of irrationalities would be flung her way, once the video gained YouTube traction. She described some of them to GMA: "'I hate her voice. It's going to be in my head for the rest of my life.'" Or the even more charming: "'I hope you cut yourself and I hope you get an eating disorder so you'll look pretty.'"Some might take it for granted that the Web displays every spectrum of humanity. Emotion's every gamut is there, so why be surprised if some people express hate And yet in Black's case, the specifically Web-based phenomena of cyberbullying and instant stardom seem to come together in a truly disturbing pas de deux. It's hard to understand why so many members of the WebMob seem to loathe Black. Her song isn't the worst in the world by any means. Some seem to be appalled that she has been Auto-Tuned, as if this must be hiding her incompetence. But in her ABC interview she sings a little of the National Anthem far better than many performers you have heard at ballgames--and I am not merely referring to Roseanna Barr's elegant version. Black doesn't seem to have a vast child-brat ego either. When asked by ABC if she thought she was a great singer, she offered a very sanguine answer for a 13-year-old: "I think I have talent on some level."Indeed, she seems to be taking this sudden and quite insane level of fame with decent equanimity. Assisted by "American Idol"'s Ryan Seacrest, she now has a Twitter feed, which again doesn't reveal anything sinister or loathe-worthy. It was left to her mother, Georgina, to admit to ABC that, when she read what had been written about her daughter: "In all honesty I could have killed a few people."But YouTube isn't the only place Black has attracted attention. When it comes to iTunes, her song has reached as high as No. 19 in the Top 100. Are people buying it just to laugh at it--splendidly twisted behavior Or might this be one of those songs that people don't want to admit publicly they like, but that privately makes them feel a little better when they're jogging, working, or robbing a bankIt's hard not to reach the conclusion that, through its behavior online with respect to Black, a large swathe of humanity has, for no obvious or fathomable reason, decided to display not its hate for Black, but its loathing of itself.

0 Vote(s)

Germany will shut down all seven of its nuclear power plants that began operation before 1980 and it is unclear whether they will start up again, the government said today.Chancellor Angela Merkel announced the closures under a nuclear policy moratorium imposed following Japan's crisis, and said they would be carried out by government decree as no agreement with the plants' operators had been reached."Power plants that went into operation before the end of 1980 will...be shut down for the period of the moratorium," Merkel told a news conference. The nuclear issue should be addressed at an EU summit on March 24-25, she added.Environment Minister Norbert Roettgen said it was not clear if all nuclear power plants shut down during the three-month moratorium would remain closed or be reconnected to the grid afterward. The Brokdorf Nuclear Power Plant in northern Germany went into service in 1986.(Credit:E.ON)Merkel astonished German politicians yesterday by suspending an unpopular coalition decision taken only last autumn, under which the life of Germany's 17 nuclear power plants would be extended by years. She drew accusations today of transparent trickery for the move, with the opposition and media saying she was trying to avoid a regional election disaster later this month.Merkel announced the closures after a meeting with the premiers of every German state with a nuclear plant.Last year the government had decided to keep the nuclear plants--operated by E.ON, RWE, EnBW and Vattenfall--running for about 12 years beyond their original shutdown date, despite protests even before the earthquake and tsunami hit Japan on Friday. Her policy change drew cynicism from the opposition. "She just wants to get through the provincial assembly elections," said Social Democrat leader Sigmar Gabriel, accusing her of playing political tactics with people's fears."The whole thing doesn't make sense and is really just a transparent trick," he told ARD television.Merkel faces three regional elections in the next fortnight, including in the wealthy southwestern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg, which has long been a stronghold of Merkel's Christian Democrats.Even before the Japanese crisis the CDU faced losing control in Baden-Wuerttemberg, which would be a political disaster for Merkel. Last month her party suffered a thrashing in elections in Hamburg, Germany's richest city.Story Copyright (c) 2010 Reuters Limited. All rights reserved.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Josh Lowensohn/CNET)Microsoft says it's fixed an issue with theWindows Phone 7 system software update that had caused some users headaches, and left others with unusable phones. The problem first cropped up shortly after Microsoft began rolling out a phone software upgrade to ease the installation of an update it plans to release to users in the next few weeks that will add new features like copy and paste, better Marketplace search, and faster application load times. For users on Samsung phones, the installation could hang shortly after the midway point, leading Microsoft to temporarily pull the update for just those users. "During the past week, the engineering team has pinpointed and fixed problems that were preventing a small percentage of Windows Phones from installing the February software patch," said Michael Stroh, a technology writer in Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 team on the company's Windows Phone blog. "We apologize again for the delay and continue looking for ways to improve the update process," he continued.Stroh said the update continues to be sent out to users in waves, meaning some handsets have not yet received the notification to grab the newer software. Once they do, that process requires plugging into a PC running theZune software, or aMac running the Windows Phone 7 Connector tool. Microsoft continues to urge users who may have encountered problems that left their phone incapacitated to get in touch with their mobile carrier or device manufacturer for guidance. That said, the company had originally stated that roughly 10 percent of Windows Phones had encountered problems, and not all of those were related to the same bug that affected Samsung users.

0 Vote(s)

Motorola has filed a patent-infringement suit against TiVo over digital video recorders, according to a report. The suit claims TiVo willfully infringed patents that were filed in the mid '90s on behalf of a company later acquired by Motorola, according to a story in The Wall Street Journal. The Journal reports that the suit also mentions a DVR patent claim filed by TiVo against Verizon--which offers a service that uses set-top boxes made by Motorola--and that the Motorola suit seeks "all available remedies" for TiVo's alleged infringements, as well as a declaration that Motorola set tops don't infringe TiVo's patents. The Motorola suit is but one of several DVR-related broadsides fired by various companies over the years.Rear view of a Motorola set-top box.(Credit:Verizon)TiVo's suit against EchoStar and Dish Network, which claims TiVo owns the patent on time-warp DVR technology, has been trudging through the courts since the mid '00s. The claim was rejected by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last summer, but the case is ongoing. And earlier this year, Microsoft followed up a patent suit against TiVo by filing a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission that seeks to prohibit TiVo from importing or selling its set tops in the United States. The original suit involves video purchasing and delivery technology that Microsoft says is covered by patents it owns.Patents, of course, have long provided a busy battleground for tech companies, which seek to file as many patent claims as possible, to protect themselves from suits as well as come out stronger in settlements.

0 Vote(s)

In the world of security, targeted attacks should be a real concern--and extremely worrisome--to organizations around the world, Symantec said in a new quarterly report on attacks on critical infrastructure."The customization of targeted attacks can make them more dangerous than non-targeted attacks because they are tailored explicitly to affect a target group," Symantec wrote in its quarterly report (PDF). The company said that targeted attacks are currently being used to take data from companies, steal information for financial gain, or to simply cause "mischief."Targeted attacks have been gathering some notoriety over the past couple years, mainly because of the Hydraq Trojan and Stuxnet, which the Symantec report focused on.The Hydraq Trojan, which was first discovered in January 2010, attempted to gain access to corporate networks through e-mail attachments or as a download through compromised Web sites. After the Trojan was executed, attackers were able to access a corporate computer through a back door to modify files or steal sensitive information. The threat eventually subsided in February 2010 as companies became aware of the issue.Stuxnet, on the other hand, is far more widespread. The threat, which became well-known after targeting Iran's nuclear program, was estimated to have over 100,000 hosts through September, Symantec told CNET in a story published today. Almost 60 percent of those hosts are in Iran.Symantec's Ralph Langner told CNET that he believes that the focus of the targeted attack has always been intended to "destroy centrifuges but also to lower the output of enriched uranium" in Iran. But Stuxnet can do more than target nuclear programs. The payload is capable of disrupting control systems used at chemical facilities, power plants, and other vastly important facilities.Symantec's quarterly report specifically pointed to Stuxnet as a prime example that targeted attacks on control systems for important machinery and equipment, including "power generation and distribution"--known as supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA)--can often be "politically motivated or state-sponsored." The security firm was able to document 10 vulnerabilities on SCADA targets during the fourth quarter, and a total of 15 SCADA vulnerabilities on the year. Symantec pointed out that the number of reported vulnerabilities is "typically very small" because it's a niche in security research.Protecting against targeted attacks is an important step in limiting issues with SCADA systems, Symantec said. The security firm recommends that companies eliminate the ability for "SCADA protocols and devices" to access the Internet. If Internet connectivity is necessary, however, Symantec recommends that companies "limit access" to cut down on the possibility of trouble breaking out.

0 Vote(s)
