(Credit:Morguefile)In yet another sign that scientists and researchers have never watched a sci-fi movie in their lives, Google wants to install and test its self-drivingcars in Nevada with the hope of one day criss-crossing the nation's urban roadways with them. While the move could eventually help keep drunk drivers off the streets of Las Vegas, Reno, and Pahrump, it also means the Silver State could be the first to fall to our onrushing robot overlords. If you thought Paris Hilton and her ilk got stupid, falling-down hammered in Las Vegas before today's announcement, clear the decks if Google receives the permission it's seeking from local government. After a testing period, the self-guided vehicles would allow passengers to talk on the phone, text, tweet, and be carried to the inevitable Robo-Human Slave Conversion Camps in safety and--especially in Vegas--drunken comfort.Google is already testing the robot cars in California successfully, with seven test cars traveling more than 1,000 miles without need for human intervention, despite a driver stationed behind the wheel and a technician to monitor the navigation system. At the time of the California tests were originally reported, the robo-cars had covered more than 140,000 miles with only one minor accident along the way. Now Google wants Nevada to juggle its motoring laws and allow these new road tests. Google claims the self-driving machines will be more environmentally friendly and more certain to adhere to road laws. And that could indeed be the case--until the high-tech war wagons expose their restraining neck harnesses and hidden laser cannons.Seriously, "Terminator: Judgement Day" gags aside, self-driving cars would have an especially positive influence in Las Vegas, where the bad driving stew of weekend alcoholics, tourists, aging retirees, and foreign travelers having their first U.S. driving experience amid a sea of flashing neon makes The Entertainment Capital of the World one of the worst driving cities in America. Google has no current plans to market the system, but engineers have said robot cars wouldn't be susceptible to drowsiness or driving under the influence, and that eventually they might allow for more cars on the road, because they can drive closer to other vehicles, and less fuel consumption, because their safety would allow them to be made lighter, with less defensive armor.(Via Jalopnik)

0 Vote(s)

A serious complication has just emerged for Google's plan for high-quality, patent-free, open-source video on the Web--but Google also revealed plans today to try to counteract it.MPEG LA, an organization that licenses video-related patents related to a variety of standards, has formally requested for patent owners to inform them of patents they believe Google's VP8 technology uses.In "offer[ing] to facilitate development of a joint license to provide coverage under essential patents," MPEG LA is taking a major step toward actually offering such a license. That might reassure some players who are interested in VP8 and its related WebM video-streaming technology, easing licensing deals that otherwise could involve many companies in the process. But it also would raise doubts about whether makers of browsers, mobile phone, processors, and cameras would be free to use the technology without signing such a license. And that could drag down Google's ambition to make "a high-quality, open video format for the Web that is freely available to everyone." VP8 is a codec, technology to encode and decode video, and paired with the Vorbis audio codec, forms the WebM Project.MPEG LA had this to say yesterday:In order to participate in the creation of, and determine licensing terms for, a joint VP8 patent license, any party that believes it has patents that are essential to the VP8 video codec specification is invited to submit them for a determination of their essentiality by MPEG LA's patent evaluators. At least one essential patent is necessary to participate in the process, and initial submissions should be made by March 18, 2011.Google pooh-poohed the move and said it's moving to marshal allies that agree with its viewpoint, though:MPEG LA has alluded to a VP8 pool since WebM launched--this is nothing new. The Web succeeds with open, community-developed innovation, and the WebM Project brings the same principles to Web video. The vast majority of the industry supports free and open development, and we're in the process of forming a broad coalition of hardware and software companies who commit to not assert any IP claims against WebM. We are firmly committed to the project and establishing an open codec for HTML5 video.Just a few weeks ago, MPEG LA made it clear which way it thinks the VP8 patent wind blows."We do not believe VP8 is patent free," MPEG LA told CNET. "There continues to be interest in the facilitation of a pool license to address the apparent marketplace desire for convenience in accessing essential VP8 patent rights owned by many different patent holders under a single license as an alternative to negotiating individual licenses."Mozilla, a strong ally in the effort to establish a royalty-free video codec, declined to comment for this story.VP8's biggest competitor, H.264, is used by many companies that pay royalties to MPEG LA. MPEG LA offers licenses on behalf of patent holders for such technology, returning royalty payments to those companies.Microsoft found its ambitions thwarted in a similar way years ago. It tried to establish a Windows Media Player-based video codec called VC-1 as a standard, but in 2007, MPEG LA stepped in with a patent pool of its own.Updated 12:14 p.m. PTwith Google comment.

0 Vote(s)

Seems like France is kind of full of dating sites. And that&'s probably not so surprising given that the country is often considered one of the most romantic.a4sHopefully everyone has now heard of Meetic,a4sthe French online dating giant listed on the Euronext stock exchange since 2005 whoa4sscooped-up Match.com&'s European division last year. And then there&'s a couple newcomers that are making headlines, like SmartDate (who scored a4s2 million earlier this year so that you can date the friends of your Facebook friends) and AttractiveWorld (the name says it all, you have to be &''accepted&'' to join the online community). And then there&'s Adoptaguy. Let me just preface this with the company&'s tagline: &''Ladies, find great deals at the supermarket of love.&'' Yes, it&'s cheesy and who knows, that&'s probably why it works. Essentially, what sets Adoptaguy apart from a lot of the other sites is that it reverses traditional roles. With a rather humorous e-commerce-like vibe, women go through the site and select the men they like by puting them in their shopping carts &8211' and only those selected few will be able to interact with their &''buyers&''.But even if women are going through the motions of &''purchasing&'' men on the site, the service is entirely free for female users. The business model is somewhat inspired by the way men pay to get into night clubs and women often get in for free. The team came up with the model once they realized that a large portion of women still had issues with dating sites for a number of reasons, one of them being that they may get spammed by uninteresting men. And so now, in an attempt to attract as many ladies as possible, Adoptaguy is free for the females and seeks to put the control in their hands in a rather humorous way.So how does puting a man in a shopping cart really change things for a woman on a dating site Beats me. But that being said, there are 3 million people currently using the service, mainly in the 18-30 age-range, with roughly 40% being women. And most of the users of the Paris-based startup are in either France, Belgium or Switzerland. But that&'s probably because the site was only in French until recently. The US version of the site is now live and the UK version should launch in the beginning of next year.CrunchBase InformationAdoptAGuyInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

Unreliable electricity and spotty internet access are a fact of life in many parts of the developing world&8212'and part of the reason the digital divide still persists today. A new, solar-powered innovation from Florida-based GNUveau Networks, however, is bringing computers and the internet to places that have no connectivity, no phone service and no electricity.Functioning as a sort of "ISP in a box," SolarNetOne is a terminal network system that uses photovoltaic solar electrical systems and a variety of open source technologies to make internet access a reality in the remotest areas. Included in the system are a small-footprint server and five terminals (expandable to as many as 48) that come loaded with web browsing, email, office, multimedia, software development and web development capabilities, with more than 15,000 other applications&8212'including VoIP&8212'to choose from as well. SolarNetOne''s terminals operate as thin clients&8212'meaning that the majority of the workload is handled by the server&8212'and the system''s Ethernet hub provides both network connection and electrical power to the terminals and their LCD monitors over a single wire. A power subsystem including an array of photovoltaic solar panels, an advanced charge controller and ample battery storage, meanwhile, provides for all of the electrical needs associated with 24/7 server operation and 8 hours per day of terminal access. Wifi coverage spans a 2-mile radius, with no fuel costs, no polluting emissions and a long lifespan of up to 20 years with proper maintenance. The entire system, in fact, operates on about the same amount of power as a 100-watt light bulb, GNUveau says. The technology has already been installed at Katsina State University in Nigeria, and a video explanation is available here.Helping to bridge the digital divide is undeniably a worthy effort, particularly when it''s done in an ecologically responsible way. The SolarNetOne project is open to collaborators' one to sponsor, assist with, or otherwise get involved in (Related: Open source software for low bandwidth consumers &8212' Solar-powered cellphone kiosks for Ugandan women.)Website: www.solarnetone.org &8212' www.gnuveau.netContact: scott@gnuveau.netSpotted by: Kevin Rombe

0 Vote(s)

eBay recently launched a new, no-fuss way for people to sell electronics they no longer use. The Instant Sale service offers free shipping, removal of personal data, and if a device doesn''t sell, eBay will recycle it for free. How it works On Instant Sale, consumers can specify what type of gadget they''d like to sell, what condition it''s in and if they''re including a charger. Instant Sale instantly displays an offer (for example, USD 78 for an iPhone 3G in fair condition). If the user accepts the offer, eBay connects him or her with a buyer who is willing to pay that price. The buyer provides the seller with a free shipping label, and once the gadget has been received and confirmed to be in the condition specified by the seller, the buyer deposits the funds in his or her PayPal account.eBay launched Instant Sale to create an easy way for consumers to offload electronics that are lying around the house, but seem like too much effort to list and sell the normal eBay way. It also touts the environmental benefits of reusing and recycling' the concept was developed by eBay''s Green Team, which created the reusable shipping boxes we covered earlier this year.Of course, eBay is also interested in capturing a piece of the growing electronics resale and recycling market, joining smaller companies like Gazelle and BuyMyTronics.
Spotting wildlife can be challenging enough on a daytime tour of the Australian rainforest, but at night the difficulty is compounded many times by the need for disruptive flashlights. Aiming to get around that problem, Australian tour company Vision Walks has begun offering after-dark tours using military-style night vision goggles. The company''s Night Vision Bushwalk allows visitors to view nocturnal wildlife such as possums, pademelons, bandicoots, frogs and glow worms without disturbing them with bright lights. Rather, the Byron Bay-based tours of Nightcap National Park equip patrons with the specially designed goggles, which allow wearers to see in the near-infrared spectrum that''s normally invisible to humans. Animals and other sights then become visible in a monochromatic green image without blinding or disturbing the animals. Pricing on the 3.5-hour Night Vision Bushwalk is AUD 99 per adult. There are a few other examples of night vision technology being used in tourism a4" in Florida''s Naples Zoo, for example a4" but it''s by no means widespread. Nature tourism, meanwhile, is growing at a rate of between 10 and 12 percent globally, according to a 2006 report from The International Ecotourism Society. How long before night vision tours become widespread...Website: www.visionwalks.comContact: info@visionwalks.comSpotted by: Emma Crameri

0 Vote(s)
