Microsoft has suspicions that an ex-employee retained strategic data after he left the firm for a position at rival Salesforce.com. In an amended court motion, filed with a Washington State Superior Court on Thursday, Microsoft alleged that Matt Miszewski lied about retaining over 600MB of proprietary information after he left the company, according to reports. "[The data] would be highly valuable to Microsoft's competitors, including Salesforce.com," Microsoft said in the motion, according to Computerworld, "both in terms of capitalizing on Microsoft's efforts to prepare these materials, as well as revealing in detail Microsoft's own competitive strategies." Upon his resignation on 31 December Miszewski told Microsoft he had taken purely personal items with him, Microsoft said in the motion.Read more of "Microsoft accuses former employee of cloud data theft" at ZDNet UK.

0 Vote(s)

A team of former MySpace executives is launching a new company on-stage at the Web 2.0 Summit today in San Francisco. Chief executive Amit Kapur said he left MySpace, the troubled News Corp. Internet portal, because his new company Gravity presents an even bigger opportunity: Basically, it uses your interests to help you find relevant content. That sounds similar to promises Ia4a4ve heard from many other companies, for example the content-sharing service Twine (which was acquired by Evri) and personalized news-reader MeeHive (which was shut down by parent company Kosmix). But Kapur said previous attempts have just a4Anibbled at the edgesa4 of the bigger problem. Gravity is part of the latest wave of companies trying to manage the ever-growing flood of content on the Web, he said. The first great innovation for handling all that content was search engines, followed by sharing on social networks. Kapur argued that the next solution is embodied by music service Pandora &8212' instead of asking users to search for music or recommending music based on the preferences of friends, Pandora plays songs that youa4a4ll probably like, based on what it knows about your own taste and interests. Kapur said Gravity is like Pandora, but for the rest of the Web, not music.Specifically, Gravity has built out a language model (it currently contains 100 million phrases, Kapur said) showing how different interests fit together. So Gravity knows that the phrase a4Afree throwa4 is related to basketball, which falls under the broader category of sports. Then for each user, Gravity can build out an a4Ainterest grapha4 of everything you seem to be interested in based on public social network content &8212' your messages on Twitter, your check-ins on Foursquare, your status updates on Facebook, and so on.Gravity is launching its first product today, called Twinterests, which builds an interest graph based on usera4a4s tweets and allows them to compare those interests to their friendsa4a4. Coming soon is The Orbit, a personalized Web newspaper. These are really just demonstrations of Gravitya4a4s technology, however. In the long-term, Kapur said he wants to turn Gravity into a service for Web publishers to personalize content for their readers. Imagine coming to VentureBeat and hitting a a4Apersonalizea4 button, then watching the page rearrange itself to highlight the stories that are of greatest interest to you.Kapur previously served as the chief operating officer at MySpace. Gravity was co-founded by two other former MySpace executives, Jim Benedetto (former senior vice president of technology) and Steve Pearman (former senior vice president of product).Gravity has raised $10 million from August Capital and Redpoint Ventures.Next Story: What October&'s drop in video-game sales means Previous Story: Abeo thinks BIG for its superlight structuresPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: curation, personalizationCompanies: August Capital, Gravity, Redpoint VenturesPeople: Amit Kapur, Jim Benedetto, Steve Pearman Tags: curation, personalizationCompanies: August Capital, Gravity, Redpoint VenturesPeople: Amit Kapur, Jim Benedetto, Steve PearmanAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Popular mobile check in application Gowalla today announced a new partnership with Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. The agreement will provide Gowalla users with custom Disney Gowalla pages, a collection of recent check ins and activities for specific parks and resorts, as well as hundreds of available custom Passport stamps, an image in recognition for checking in to a specific attraction.Disney and Gowalla have come up with several ways to promote the new partnership, according to the Disney Parks Blog.Special events will be held throughout the year as well asthe launch of a series of trips, a special bundle of attractions by age and interest. The company gives the following example:a4AFor the Little Ones (under 44 inches)a4 is a dream track fit for pint-sized park-goers to Magic Kingdom in Florida. It includes a4AMickeya4a4s PhilharMagic,a4 Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Peter Pana4a4s Flight and more.Disney is definitely a high-profile brand that makes sense for Gowalla as it looks to compete for users with rival Foursquare. Both Gowalla and Foursquare recently partnered with government agency NASA, which brought a ton of attention to the companies. Interestingly, Gowalla made the NASA partnership announcement first, but Foursquare quickly followed. On a more personal note, I was recently in Disney World and used Foursquare to check in all over the place. You can&'t imagine all the stuff you can do on your smartphone while waiting in line for an attraction. But I&'d have to say that after a few check ins, Ibecame bored. If the Gowalla and Disney had this partnership while I was there, I&'d probably be a Gowalla user at this time. Another interesting angle to these partnerships &8211' which ones can make usersswitch sidesNext Story: Once speechless on business models, Twitter co-founder Ev Williams now has plenty to talk about (video) Previous Story: Hubris vs. Humility: The positioning challengePrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: animal kingdom, attractions, check-in, location, location-based, location-based service, Magic Kingdom, parks, rides, Walt DisneyCompanies: Disney, Foursquare, Gowalla Tags: animal kingdom, attractions, check-in, location, location-based, location-based service, Magic Kingdom, parks, rides, Walt DisneyCompanies: Disney, Foursquare, GowallaCody Barbierri is a social and digital media consultant.
New startup Zediva attempts to circumvent all the licensing hassles experienced by streaming video services like Netflix, iTunes and Hulu througha4soperating more like a traditional movie rental store, except online. The catcha4s&''We don&'t rent digital copies of a movie,&'' founder Venky Srinivasan told Rotten Tomatoes, &''Our users rent a physical DVD, along with a DVD player from us for a fixed amount of time.a4sThey then control that DVD player remotely over the internet &8212' and stream the movie privately to themselves.a4sThink of it as a really long cable and a really long remote control.&''The &''really long cable&'' that is the Internet means not having to negotiate with content companies over streaming rights. This loophole means that Zediva can feature more recent releases at a lower price than companies who stream digital files, charging $1.99 for a movie versus $3.99 on iTunes and Blockbuster. Ten movies on Zediva are $10 versus a $7.99 monthly membership to Netflix and users can freely re-rent a Zediva movie for up to 14 days.It seems like Srinivasan is serious about the physical DVD legal hack. When I visited the site the movie I wanted to rent, &''Eat Pray Love,&'' was all rented out, just like in a real brick and mortar store. You can even request to have your physical DVD mailed to you Netflix style, even though &''additional charges may apply.&''With around 40 movies in the library at the moment, Zediva is starting small and focusing on offering &''the top two or three movies of the week.&'' Srinivasan doesn&'t think the startup is breaking digital copyright law, in fact believes that movie studios will embrace the model. Well, here&'s to being hopeful, and disruptive.CrunchBase InformationZedivaInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)

William Adams, better known as Will.I.Am of the music group Black Eyed Peas, said he isn&'t sure what the cloud is. But he knows what he wants it to do for his fans.&''I&'m waiting for a day when my fans can listen to my music in real time as I&'m making it,&'' the Black Eyed Peas front man said. &''Instead of just carrying around my laptop and working on music there.&''His comments came at Salesforce&'s annual Dreamforce conference in San Francisco today. This is the eighth year that Salesforce, one of the leaders in cloud computing and customer relationship management (CRM) software, has run the conference.Back when the conference started, the cloud was a completely different beast. The goal was to find a cheap and efficient way to have access to high-powered computing and software, said Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff.&''We weren&'t even in touch with what the cloud would be today a few years ago,&'' he said. &''Now, we ask ourselves, why isn&'t all enterprise software like Facebook&''It&'s a lesson a lot of cloud computing companies are baking into their cloud computing and enterprise strategies. Salesforce launched Chatter, a micro-blogging service on top of its CRM software, after seeing the runaway success Twitter had. Yammer, another enterprise software, is essentially a Facebook for businesses that helps with collaboration. It&'s a new era of enterprise software that has had some pretty fantastic interest as well. The newest generation of enterprise products like Yammer, Zendesk and Huddle have seen large amounts of funding. Salesforce already has more than 60,000 customers for its Chatter service, which launched earlier this year. The newest focus for Salesforce is hitting mobile markets as hard as possible. More Smartphones and mobile devices are being activated when compared to notebooks and desktop computers at a rate of nearly three to one. That requires a bit of a different strategy, as cloud computing on mobile devices isna4a4t like the a4Aamazon.coma4 model that involved efficiency.Googlea4a4s Eric Schmidt said cloud computing on mobile devices was about equivalent to making the device do magic. If mobile devices arena4a4t running applications or doing something thata4a4s essentially magic, developers arena4a4t innovating enough, Benioff said at Dreamforce today. That even involves enterprise applications, like Salesforcea4a4s Chatter, which is available for the iPhone and iPad and fully takes advantage of the touch screen. And the new era of enterprise software is one that&'s going to trickle all the way down the chain of command. Enterprise software isn&'t just for massive, unwieldy companies that are in desperate need of streamlining their software. It&'s for the smaller and medium-sized businesses. It&'s for the programmers developing enterprise software and also IT professionals looking to improve efficiency. And it&'s even for musicians, like Will.I.Am.[Photo: nan palmero]Next Story: Spotify CEO: Still no date on U.S. launch Previous Story: The not so secret PSP Phone exposed againPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: cloud computing, collaboration, Dreamforce, Dreamforce 2010, enterprise softwareCompanies: salesforcePeople: Marc Benioff, Will.I.Am Tags: cloud computing, collaboration, Dreamforce, Dreamforce 2010, enterprise softwareCompanies: salesforcePeople: Marc Benioff, Will.I.AmMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Popular commenting platform Disqus is adding a big upgrade to its central dashboard today that makes the service feel much more like a social network a4" sort of like a Twitter for comments. For those who haven&'t used Disqus, the service lets you create one profile for all of your comments across any of the hundreds of thousands of sites that support it (we use it on TechCrunch). The Disqus Dashboard gives you a central hub to view all the discussions you&'ve participated in, but until now it hasn&'t done such a great job helping you find your friends&' comments, or letting you discover users that you may enjoy following. That&'s changing with today&'s update. The biggest new feature is the ability to follow other users. It works as you&'d expect a4" once you&'ve followed someone, you&'ll see their comments show up in your main activity stream. The Dashboard also includes a &8216'Find friends to follow&' widget to help you find interesting content.Of course, you don&'t really have to use the Dashboard if you don&'t want to (and my hunch is that many Disqus users only visit it verya4ssporadically, if at all). That may start to change with these new features, though.Other improvements include the ability to remove or edit comments you&'ve left directly from your Dashboard, instead of having to visit the publisher&'s sites.CrunchBase InformationDISQUSInformation provided by CrunchBase

0 Vote(s)
