<description><![CDATA[Will the MacBook Pro run ARM-based chips(Credit:Apple)Apple has quietly decided to drop Intel processors in favor of ARM-based chips in its line of MacBooks and MacBook Pros, a new report claims.Citing anonymous sources, technology news site SemiAccurate is reporting that Apple's move is already &quot;a done deal.&quot; However, the company won't be bringing ARM chips to its devices anytime soon.According to SemiAccurate, its sources say that the move won't happen for two or three years, potentially coinciding with Nvidia's release of its Project Denver CPUs. Those ARM-based processors are being developed for everything from PCs to servers and supercomputers, Nvidia said earlier this year. They will be integrated on the same chip as the company's GPU.Of course, there are some potential issues with Apple moving away from Intel-based chips. For one, the company would need to deal with software incompatibility issues that might arise. Moreover, and perhaps most importantly, ARM-based chips have yet to prove themselves in the PC market--a space where Intel has been performing extremely well. ARM chips have, however, become the go-to options for smartphone andtablet vendors.That said, ARM chips could be poised for serious growth in the PC market. Just yesterday, research firm IDC said that it expects ARM to own 13 percent of the PC processor market by 2015. That dramatic market shift will be due mainly to Windows 8. At the Consumer Electronics Show earlier this year, Microsoft announced that its next-generation operating system will be compatible with ARM-based devices.Windows 8 could be released as early as next year.Whether or not Apple is actually planning to launch ARM-based MacBooks and MacBook Pros is unknown. <description><![CDATA[(Credit:Iconosys)We've written about people-tracking devices before, typically to keep track of elderly loved ones with some form of dementia. The downside has always been that those being tracked must remember to wear or carry the device that tracks them (i.e. a pendant, a watch, a shoe, etc.). The problem is built-in, so to speak.Today the firm Iconosys, which develops safety-related mobile communication apps, has released Tell My Geo, a new app for Android OS smartphones to help keep track of those with dementia.The app requires at least two phones, one for the person being looked after, the other for the person doing the looking. One adhesive decal is supposed to be placed on the back of the phone being tracked, and a second on the rear window of thecar of the person being tracked.Tell My Geo has a few things going for it. First, the caregiver need push just one button to call up the exact whereabouts of the cared-for's phone, not to mention a whole range of medication information. And the cared-for's phone can be set to send regular updates with location points as frequently as 15-, 30-, and 60-minute intervals. It also stores medical information that emergency personnel can access with a single click, as well as edit via www.tellmygeo.com.Unfortunately, the app does not tackle the fundamental flaw of its predecessors. The cared-for still has to remember to carry, look after, and use the phone and corresponding app, neither of which is cheap (the app costs $9.95 per month per phone).And then there's the question of that second decal going on the back of the cared-for's car. This surprised me' the app is being marketed as a way to track the elderly with dementia or children, neither of whom should be driving.But developer Wayne Irvine says he is primarily targeting adults with early-onset Alzheimer's or slight forgetfulness. &quot;We're focused on that specific space, folks who have cell phones and are still driving but are starting to forget things, or it's determined they have early-onset Alzheimer's,&quot; says Irvine, who adds that his grandfather has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's but still drives. &quot;If we can bring some anxiety relief to the adult children of these people, that's really our focus.&quot;Considering how the app works and what it requires of the cared-for, the best application I see is using this as a means of tracking a tech-savvy and unforgetful child in a crowded or unfamiliar place, i.e. while shopping, at a busy event, in a large park, etc.As for those with dementia, I hope to see future apps and devices that track them without requiring that they remember to do anything, and that includes remembering to pack, carry, and use a smartphone.<br/><br/>0 Vote(s) ]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[An electric mini and a plug-in hybrid charge up.(Credit:Martin LaMonica/CNET )Electric vehicles will figure prominently at the upcoming LA Auto Show, but yet another survey is highlighting that consumer apprehension about the new technology is one of the biggest challenges to plug-in vehicles.Pike Research today released a survey of 1,042 U.S. consumers that found interest in highway-capable gas-electric hybrids and battery electriccars, with 44 percent of respondents saying they would be interested in a plug-in with a range of 40 miles to 100 miles and a fuel equivalent of 75 cents per gallon. A battery range of 40 miles suited 83 percent of drivers, with the average being 26.6 miles per day. The Chevy Volt, which is now shipping to early customers, has an electric range of 25 to 50 miles with a gas tank to run a generator to charge the batteries for longer drivers. The Nissan Leaf, shipping later this year, has a range of about 100 miles.But current pricing for plug-in vehicles is higher than what most consumers are willing to pay, even if it's cheaper per mile to drive, according to Pike Research. It estimates the optimal premium is in the range of 18.75 percent, which would be $23,750 compared to a $20,000 car. The Volt is priced at $41,000 and the Leaf costs just under $33,000.Also, consumers were split on which sort of plug-in vehicle they would choose. By 2012, there will be a range of plug-in options, ranging from all-electric vehicles to sedans such as the plug-in Prius, which improves overall mileage with a larger battery that gives an electric range of 13 miles.&quot;The fact is that a 'wait-and-see' approach about the technology itself was a greater issue for consumers in our survey (than range). It could easily take several years for mainstream car shoppers to get comfortable with the idea of electric vehicles,&quot; Pike analyst John Gartner said in a statement. Still, Pike projects rapid growth in the nascent plug-in segment, which it says will more than double in size from 2010 to 2015. Last month, J.D. Powers released its own survey and analysis of hybrid and electric vehicles sales, which it said will grow from 2.2 percent of sales now to 7.3 percent in 2020. It argued that only a spike in gas prices, a breakthrough in batteries, or concerted government policies would push sales far beyond that percentage. Many automaker executives, too, are cautious about hyping electric vehicles or expecting a rapid shift to electrification. <description><![CDATA[It was just a few weeks ago that Accel Partners sold off around half a billion dollars of Facebook shares at a company valuation of $35 billion. The end price per share was $20.76, and about 1.9 million shares were bought and sold. And based on there being around 2.5 billion shares outstanding after a 5-1 stock split earlier this year, that values Facebook at around $50 billion. As far as we know, this is an all time high.At a $50 billion valuation Facebook is has more than 1/4th the market capitalization of Google, and nearly 1/4th the value of Microsoft.
