A significant number of IT professionals say they'd take a salary cut for the chance to work from home full time, according to a survey from techie job site Dice.Thirty-five percent of 937 IT pros surveyed in mid-March said they would accept up to a 10 percent pay cut to telecommute in light of soaring gas prices, A 10 percent slice in the average technology professional's salary would translate into $7,800 less earned per year, according to Dice.Thirty-six percent responded no, insisting on the same pay for the same work. Another 9 percent said they already telecommute, while 20 percent said they'd take any job since they're currently out of work.Despite throwing in the part about rising gas prices, the same question posed by Dice three years ago got almost the same results, Dice.com managing director Alice Hill said in a brief report on the survey. The strong desire by technology pros to work from home stands in stark contrast to the small number of jobs posted on Dice that mention telecommuting. Less than 1 percent, or only 500, of the approximately 160,000 jobs on Dice this month tout the option to telecommute.Though more employers have embraced telecommuting in recent years, indications point to many technology leaders as feeling reluctant to support it. Hill believes many IT managers are reluctant to allow their staffers to work from home.Pointing to an unemployment rate of only 4 percent among IT professionals and shortages in certain fields, Hill asserts that telecommuting would let managers draw from a larger pool of talent in which the skillset, rather than the location, is ideal. Advising companies to leave "inflexible work arrangements" behind, Hill suggests that "maybe if we called it cloud commuting, CIOs would buy in."

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Olympus)Long lenses sell cameras these days and, well, the 14-megapixel Olympus SZ-10 has one. The camera starts at 28mm and extends to 504mm (35mm equivalent). That's an 18x zoom in body that's only 1.5 inches thick for $249.99.To put that in context, last year's 12-megapixel Olympus SP-600UZ had a 15x, f3.5-5.4, 28-420mm-equivalent lens, was 3-inches thick, and started at the same price. The SZ-10 is smaller, has a newer TruePic III+ image processor developed from Olympus' digital SLR processors, and a larger, higher-resolution 3-inch LCD. Without testing it I can't say that the SZ-10 is a better camera, but it's off to a good start. The SZ-10's shooting features aren't extraordinary--there are no manual or semimanual shooting modes for example--but it does offer some fun features. This includes the company's creative Magic Art Filters for spicing up your photos and videos, an easy-to-use in-camera panorama mode, and a similar 3D shooting mode for creating photos to view on a3D TV or computer. It shoots 720p HD movies at 30 frames per second and has an HDMI output. It also supports Eye-Fi wireless SD cards for those that want to share photos and videos online without connecting to a computer. And, you get mechanical image stabilization. The $199.99 14-megapixel VR-320 has similar shooting options, but its lens is different. It starts at an ultrawide-angle 24mm and zooms to 300mm (35mm equivalent). So, it's not as long at 12.5x, but it starts wider and the body is just more than an inch thick. It, too, has a 3-inch LCD, but it's a lower resolution. Also, there's no mention of the TruePic III+ image processor, so that may have been cut. Otherwise, it looks pretty decent for its starting price. Both the SZ-10 and VR-320 will be out in March. Olympus also announced the $89.99 VG-110. It's a basic 12-megapixel ultracompact with a 27mm-equivalent wide-angle lens, digital image stabilization, 2.7-inch LCD, and a VGA movie mode. The press release says it will defy my expectations, which won't be difficult to do as I expect very little at this price. It'll be out this month in black, silver, and red versions.

0 Vote(s)

If you ever wanted to know how well a particular company's commercial campaigns are performing in the increasingly DVR'd world, TiVo has the solution for you.The company announced the launch of a free tool today, called Ad Scorecard, that provides insight into how well companies are advertising their brands on television. The platform is designed to provide brand managers and marketing executives with information on whether or not TiVo users are actually watching their commercials and how effective those ads are at capturing user attention."TiVo wants to make it easy for all marketers to begin incorporating better metrics into their decision-making processes--and we've decided this easy-to-use Web tool is a great way to help people understand more broadly the value of our data," TiVo vice president for advertising and research sale said in a statement.TiVo's data could be a boon for marketers. The company currently offers a service to marketers called, StopWatch, which collects anonymous data from customers to see which commercials users are quickly fast-forwarding and which they're actually watching. TiVo says that it collects that data down to the second, making it one of the more accurate representations of user activity for marketers, since the company claims, "40 percent of TV homes have a DVR today."Apple is more effectively advertising its brand on TV than Microsoft or Verizon.(Credit:Screenshot by Don Reisinger/CNET)Ad Scorecard allows users to input up to three advertisers into the comparison pane to see how well they've all fared. Users can also choose between four weeks, eight weeks, or twelve weeks of data analysis. All the brands are compared based on their "commercial retention index" to see which ads were most successful at staying with viewers. The tool also lets users see how well brands fared on both broadcast and cable networks or on one or the other.I quickly took the tool for a spin and compared ad effectiveness between Apple, Microsoft, and Verizon over the past twelve weeks. According to TiVo, Apple performed most effectively at appealing to viewers over that period.

0 Vote(s)

Carmaker Honda is warning more than 2 million of its customers in the U.S. that an e-mail database containing some of their personal information has been stolen. It's not yet 100 percent clear if this breach is connected to the recent breach of the e-mail marketing firm Silverpop Systems, but it sure looks that way. Honda was an enthusiastic Silverpop customer as recently as 2009, according to this press release. It's the same company whose data was breached in thefts of customer data from McDonald's and deviantArt. A similar incident was reported concerning the drugstore chain Walgreen's, but it hasn't been tied specifically to Silverpop. The list contained the names, login names, e-mail addresses and--get this--vehicle identification numbers of more than 2 million Honda owners. Another list, this one containing only the e-mail addresses of nearly 3 million Acura owners, was also taken.Honda has contacted all the customers via e-mail. The worry is that affected owners, especially those on the list with the VINs, may be targeted for some kind of phishing attack. Imagine getting an e-mail from someone pretending to be your local Honda dealer who correctly identifies thecar you just bought and asks you to give up more personal information so that you can get "special offers."Story Copyright (c) 2010 AllThingsD.
Voice Search adds a personalized recognition option.(Credit:Google)Google updated its popular Voice Search application for Android today, allowing for a more personal experience. Users now have the option to turn on personalized recognition within the app, leading to a more accurate transcription and searching algorithm.According to the Google Mobile blog, the new feature will begin associating recordings of words immediately and then improve them over time. Simply put, the more Voice Search is used, the more accurate it will become.I should point out, though, that it's not available to everyone. The current version works only for those in the United States running Android 2.2 and above. What's more, the only language supported at this time is English. Expect to see more countries and languages supported in the future. It will be interesting to see where these tools are used down the road. I can imagine Google Voice transcriptions getting better because of improved tools like this. Where else can you see personalized recognition playing a bigger role

0 Vote(s)

Here are the top stories in cleantech we&'re following on the GreenBeat today:Solar panel maker Suntech is buying more wafer-slicing capacity in China for $127 million, the Associated Press reports.Federal regulators have proposed easing grid restrictions on renewable energies that will allow solar and wind producers to deliver energy faster and lower rates for consumers purchasing that electricity, Reuters reports.More and more utility-scale solar projects are coming online, Greentech Media writes, noting Southern California Edison&'s recent deals for 259 megawatts of power. Concentrated solar systems maker Amonix could benefit from the overall surge.Biofuels startup Proterro says it has engineered a microbe that can continuously churn out sugar, Earth2Tech reports. If the company can scale its technology, it could become a provider of cheap sugar, which ethanol makers could then easily convert to ethanol, thus forgoing the time, disadvantage, and expense of buying and processing feedstock like corn.Infigen Energy is in talks to invest in wind projects in Australia worth about $492 million, Bloomberg writes.Mitsubishi unveiled its all-electric miEV car that it will launch next year in the U.S., Greentech Media reports, and it&'s priced $3,000 below the all-electric Nissan Leaf, which will begin to be delivered to buyers next month.Audi plans to eventually come out with an entire line of plug-ins and hybrids, marketed under the E-Tron name. The company will start by releasing the all-electric E-Tron sports car at the end of 2012, Greentech Media reports.Celanese plans to invest $700 million in two coal-to-ethanol factories in China that will be able to produce about 400,000 tons of biofuel a year. The company says its process is cheaper than using corn, prompting Forbes tocall the company &'' a name you need to know in 2011.&''[Image via Flickr/vax-o-matic]Next Story: OpenFeint finds a way to co-exist with Apple&'s Game Center for the iPhone Previous Story: MooBella scores $9M to make ice cream on demand in New EnglandPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: biofuels, coal, concentrated solar, e-Tron, electric cars, Miev, Solar, windCompanies: Amonix, Audi, Celanese, Infigen Energy, Mitsubishi, Proterro, Southern California Edison, Suntech Tags: biofuels, coal, concentrated solar, e-Tron, electric cars, Miev, Solar, windCompanies: Amonix, Audi, Celanese, Infigen Energy, Mitsubishi, Proterro, Southern California Edison, SuntechIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
UpdatedPopular private-sale company Gilt Groupe jumped into the market for deals sites earlier this year with a property called Gilt City. As the New York City startup tries to build a brand for itself as the luxury-minded alternative in a crowded industry, it recently hired a veteran of both e-commerce and media to run its engineering team.Gilt Citya4a4s vice president of engineering, Brian Dhatt, previously served as chief technology officer at Sugar, a network of websites for women. (Dhatt&'s role is supposedly a &''newly-expanded position&'' that reports directly to Gilt City&'s president Nathan Richardson.) He also spent time as the chief architect of BestBuy.com. Dhatt told me that he was lured to Gilt City by the companya4a4s vision as a site where users arena4a4t just looking for discounts, but also a4Agreat experiencesa4.a4AIf we were in a pure group-buying space, I don&'t think there would be heap of differentiation for us,a4 Dhatt said. a4APeople know if they come here they&'re going to be taken care of.a4Beyond moving into new markets (Gilt City launched in Tokyo last week), Dhatt said one of his big goals involves building out more location-based features. The company is a4Anot doing mucha4 in that area right now, he acknowledged, but Gilt City could use location data to really achieve that mission of delivering great experiences. One sign of Gilt Citya4a4s interest in this area is the upcoming launch of neighborhood-level deals, which are planned to go live for New York and Los Angeles users in January.Besides Tokyo, Gilt City is available in six US areas, including San Francisco and Chicago, and it says it has 1.1 million registered users. Dhatt said that while the company is part of Gilt Groupe and obviously takes advantage of the larger organizationa4a4s resources, ita4a4s based in a separate office and has a smaller startupa4a4s sense of a4Aurgencya4.a4AWe are working hard to grow Gilt City into something great, independent of the fact that Gilt Groupe exists,a4 Dhatt said.Update: An earlier version of this story described Gilt City as a group-buying site, which is incorrect &8212' the site&'s deals do not require a certain number of users to sign up before the deal becomes active.Next Story: How Twitter acquires people Previous Story: If Google buys into coupons, it will still have to buildPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: group buyingCompanies: Gilt City, Gilt Groupe, SugarPeople: Brian Dhatt Tags: group buyingCompanies: Gilt City, Gilt Groupe, SugarPeople: Brian DhattAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
