(Credit:Wayne Cunningham/CNET)The last iteration of the Acura TL launched with too bold a look, and after only a couple of years in production, the 2012 version comes out with a toned-down grille piece and more subtle lines. Although the 2012 Acura TL SH-AWD is not as distinctive as its predecessor, its Acura identity remains intact. And although it doesn't sit at the top of Acura's model lineup (that position is reserved for the RL), the TL SH-AWD shows off Acura's latest technology, and exhibits a level of comfort and luxury that outstrips its siblings. New features for the 2012 TL SH-AWD include a bigger hard drive for more onboard music storage, voice command that lets you choose music by name, and a six-speed automatic transmission.Read our review of the 2012 Acura TL SH-AWD.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:CNET)I reviewed GarageBand for iPad recently and, as I said in the review, I wish I could give this app six stars. With the combination of smart touch-screen controls, tons of loops, an incredible amount of instruments, and smart instruments that make even someone with no musical talent sound good, this app is simply a must-have at $4.99.This week Apple issued a small update for the app that will be welcome news for GarageBand fans. Now you'll be able to transfer youriPad masterpieces to yourMac to work on them further in GarageBand for Mac. This is particularly good news to me because now I can take my iPad with me on trips, make new songs, then easily transfer them to my desktop when I get home. Are any of you as excited about GarageBand for iPad as I am Let me know in the comments. This week's apps are a challenging physics-based building-game sequel and an upgraded iOS version of a very popular golf game franchise.Once you&39're satisfied with your structure, start the certification test to see if it will hold up.(Credit:Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)SimplePhysics (99 cents) is the sequel to popular physics game BridgeBasher, challenging you to make structures that will withstand the laws of gravity and nature--while remaining under budget. You start with a helpful tutorial level that shows you the ropes by having you build a tree house. Your requirements are that you build the structure to withstand the weight of four 50-pound children (don't worry, they use boxes to symbolize the children). Before testing the integrity of your structure, draw supports between onscreen anchors to make sure your tree house will hold. When you're satisfied with your work you can put your tree house through a Certification test, but it must hold the weight of the four children for 10 seconds in order to pass.Every level in SimplePhysics has new requirements and challenges you'll need to meet to pass, but the game gives you lots of tools to help you test your structures. Before certification, you have the option to use a "finger" test, in which you touch and drag support trusses to determine their weak points, making it possible to alter your structure before the final test. But even with the added information, we found this game to be extremely challenging, especially in later levels.Overall, SimplePhysics makes for a great successor to BridgeBasher, with several useful interface additions and structural challenges to keep the game interesting. But be aware that this game will definitely challenge you and you may end up doing levels several times before you succeed.Switch clubs by hitting the club icon in the lower left.(Credit:Screenshot by Jason Parker/CNET)Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 ($6.99--iPad version is $9.99) is the first game from the popular golf franchise on iOS since April 2009, and it's easy to see that this latest game is leaps and bounds beyond the original. The graphics on theiPhone 4 Retina Display are silky smooth, reminding me of console-level golf games. The controls have been fine-tuned as well, making it easy to adjust shot types and switch clubs depending on the situation. You get the choice to play as Tiger Woods, alongside him, or as any one of several current pro male and female players. You can also create your own player and customize clothing, clothing color, and skin color. Later, when you earn some money for various challenges on the course, you'll be able to upgrade your equipment for more-powerful shots and better accuracy to help you improve your scores. Rather than the standard three-touch hit method found in other golf games, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 uses a vertical swiping method for better precision--the down swipe determines shot power and on the up swipe you can slightly curve your swing for draw and fade shots. Even once the ball is in the air you can swipe repeatedly in any direction to put spin on the ball. All of these shot variables will come in handy in various situations, and we like that there are so many controls for shot precision. Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 lets you play quick games, head-to-head matches against friends over Bluetooth or a local network, or Tiger challenges with unique requirements, or you can play through your own PGA Tour. You also have the ability to connect to Facebook and try to beat your friends' best shots (which you can watch) on specific holes. Sadly, there is no online multiplayer at this time, but it seems like a no-brainer that EA would add that functionality in a future version--we'll just have to wait and see. Even without online multiplayer, with a streamlined control system, customizable players, and tons of challenging courses to play on, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 is the golf game to beat on iOS. Anyone looking for golf game that's closer to simulation than arcade will enjoy this title. What's your favorite iPhone app Are you able to get past the Ferris wheel in SimplePhysics (I haven't yet) Do you like the control system in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 Let me know in the comments!

0 Vote(s)

The search for people in the tsunami-ravaged areas of Sendai, Japan is almost impossible if you're overseas. Here's my brief account. Let me preface this by saying that I lived in Japan for 10 years. Most of that time was in Tokyo (eight years), but two were in Sendai. And I visited Sendai coastal areas fairly often in the summer when I lived there. Yamashita is near Yamamoto-cho, which is south of Sendai. In short, ground zero for the Tsunami. (Credit:Google Maps)But there is one place that is special. An area near the tiny Yamashita train station (see map), not much more than a mile from the Sendai coast, where I spent many happy days with Japanese friends and family. To give the reader a better sense of its location, it is a little more than 20 miles due south of Sendai in Yamamoto-cho in the Watari district. To say that it was potentially in the path of the Tsunami is an understatement. It was ground zero. By sheer coincidence, I was trying to contact someone (Japanese) who lives near Yamashita station--Thursday night my time, Friday Japan time. And by even greater coincidence, I was trying to contact this person just before the earthquake hit. The last communication I received was an e-mail. And it seemed (though I can't confirm this) that the earthquake hit after this person began composing the response. After some small talk, it stops suddenly, then reads (translated from Japanese) as follows: "Just now a giant earthquake hit. Very scary. Everyone running into the street." That's where the communication ended and that was the last communication I received. I repeatedly called this person's cell phone and sent e-mail. Nothing. (This person is not on Facebook.) I then tried other resources. For example, I called the Miyagi Prefecture police (Sendai is in Miyagi Prefecture). The police officer didn't mince words. Translation: "We know nothing about what happened to residents in that area. We just don't know." Calls to other facilities, such as the Miyagi Prefecture office and Yamamoto-cho town office have been futile. Either no one answers or the calls just aren't going through (the latter I suspect is the most likely answer). Meanwhile, I have been scouring the Japanese-language media trying to find any news on this area (it's too small to be of significance to the U.S. media). One of the Japanese-language reports I found was very short--only three sentences--but chilling. It begins by stating that the incident happened as a result of the tsunami and that a "massive piece of debris was carried far inland." It continues. "A three-car train at Yamashita station was derailed and overturned. One of the Japan Railway crew in the leadcar escaped to safety." What happened to the passengers or the people at the station is not revealed as the article is only three sentences. That's not a lot to go on. So, my search continues.

0 Vote(s)

The MAVIS system can pull out individual words or phrases from videos and let you skip to where they are.(Credit:CNET)The U.S. Department of Energy is making use of audio and video indexing technology from Microsoft's Research arm to make it easier to pick out words and phrases from around 1,000 hours of video. The project, dubbed ScienceCinema, is a public-facing site containing scientific research videos from the Department of Energy. Users can plug any word or phrase into its search tool and get a listing of any videos that include said phrases. Hitting play on any of the words will then jump users right to the specific spot in the video where it's uttered. Included, for fair measure, are snippets of the entire video's transcript, so that users can see where the search term pops up again. Behind the scenes, ScienceCinema is using the Microsoft Research Audio Video Indexing System (MAVIS). The underlying technology is a mix of speech recognition software and an indexing system that turns the results into a database that can be searched. The technology is run as a service through the Windows Azure Platform, which puts the heavy compute cycle onus on Microsoft's servers. Besides the Department of Energy, MAVIS is also being used by the British Library as part of its Growing Knowledge Exhibition and moving-image curation efforts. The technology was also adopted by Washington state to cull through around 6,000 hours of audio from legislative hearings over the past four decades as part of its digital archives program.

0 Vote(s)

With this yeara4a4s Consumer Electronics Show behind us, ita4a4s time to take a look back and reflect on what stood out the most. There were plenty of tablets, phones, computers and other gadgets at the show, but only a few were truly memorable. This year we saw a phone that turned into a smartbook, RIM&'s miraculous comeback, a PC competitor to the Macbook Air and more.We expected to be wowed by tablets more than phones at CES, but leave it up to Motorola, creator of the Droid phone that helped popularize Android, to deliver a phone unlike any other. The Atrix is a powerful 4G smartphone for AT&amp'T powered by a 1 gigahertz dual-core processor &8212' but thata4a4s not what makes it interesting. The device is so powerful that Motorola created two docks to let consumers use it to its full potential: One, dubbed the Laptop Dock, effectively lets you use the phone as a smartbook &8212' complete with a touchpad and keyboard. Another dock lets you use the Atrix to power a computer monitor and plug in your own keyboard and mouse.Ita4a4s the first smartphone to truly cross the line between computer and mobile device, and it was by far the most fascinating gadget at CES.On top of the Atrix, Motorola also managed to deliver the best looking Android tablet with the Xoom &8212' a feat considering that there were dozens of tablet competitors at the show. The 10.1-inch Xoom was the most iPad-like Android tablet with its polished hardware, and since it runs Googlea4a4s tablet-friendly Android 3.0 OS, it can also match the iPad when it comes to user experience. Ita4a4s a definite upgrade from Samsunga4a4s Galaxy Tab, the only other viable Android tablet out right now.We were already impressed with Research in Motiona4a4s BlackBerry PlayBook going into CES, but we fell even more in love with the tablet once we got our hands on it. At 7 inches, ita4a4s more portable than the iPad and other 10-inch tablets, and I found it to be surprisingly fast. Clearly, RIMa4a4s reliance on QNXa4a4s software for the PlayBooka4a4s OS is a good thing, as the tablet is light years beyond anything wea4a4ve seen from the company. Not only is the PlayBook a great-looking tablet, but it also gives us hope that RIMa4a4s phones will finally get modernized with the new QNX OS.Microsofta4a4s touchscreen tabletop Surface was an interesting, but unwieldy, product. Surface 2 fixes pretty much all of the first versiona4a4s issues &8212' it no longer requires a bulky cabinet, for one &8212' and it basically gives LCDs the power to see. Its PixelSense technology lets LCD displays recognize fingers, hands and other objects pressed directly onto the screen. And since ita4a4s no longer bulky, Surface 2 can be wall mounted &8212' opening up a plethora of new uses.Windows PCs finally have a legitimate competitor to Applea4a4s impossibly-thin Macbook Air. Samsunga4a4s series 9 ultraportable laptop bests the Air in almost every way &8212' ita4a4s slightly thinner, slightly lighter and a lot more powerful with a second-generation Intel Core i5 processor running at 1.4 gigahertz. Ita4a4s also made out of Duralumin, a metal thata4a4s twice as strong as aluminum. Ita4a4ll be out in February at a steep $1,599 &8212' but from the looks of it, the high price will be worth it.The only downside to Motorolaa4a4s Atrix is that it doesna4a4t run on Verizona4a4s LTE 4G network, which is quickly gathering steam with a plethora of new devices and ridiculously fast speeds. The carrier announced that 10 LTE devices will be hitting its network during the first half of this year. And in my testing with the Motorola Bionic, the phone managed to get download speeds of around 18 Mbps and upload speeds of around 3 Mbps &8212' both vastly faster than any 3G network.AT&amp'T is also moving forward with its LTE 4G network this year, while T-Mobile and Sprint are continuing to expand their 4G networks. But so far, only Verizona4a4s network has shown us next-generation speeds in the real world. With Android 3.0, it looks like Google has finally brought its mobile OS up to par with Applea4a4s iPhone OS. Google unveiled a preview of the OS last week, and it looked positively next-generation &8212' with a striking new interface, updated maps and email apps, as well as a more polished look overall. We also learned that it would be powering Motorolaa4a4s Xoom and LGa4a4s G-Slate &8212' and you already know how much we love the Xoom. Wea4a4re just hoping Google brings many of the visual niceties in Android 3.0 over to phones soon.Microsoft has been working on its multitouch mouse for years now, but last week we finally got a look at its Touch Mouse. The mouse sports a smooth multitouch surface thata4a4s not marred by any ugly buttons or scroll wheels, and it includes gestures for up to three fingers. Sure, Apple released its multitouch Magic Mouse at the end of 2009, but it seems Microsoft has spent its extra development time making the Touch Mouse more ergonomically friendly &8212' something that Applea4a4s mice cana4a4t claim to be. The mouse is built specifically for Windows 7, with gestures for AeroSnap and a cool task switching interface. Now consoles arena4a4t the only gaming systems with motion controls. Razera4a4s Hydra controller brings the joy of waving your controller around to your PC. Ita4a4s powered by Sixsensea4a4s Truemotion technology, which uses a magnetic field to detect the movements of the controller. As VentureBeata4a4s Dean Takahashi explains it: &''The system has a base magnet that connects to your game PC and a couple of handheld controllers that you use to maneuver through the game. The net result is that it gives a player &'six degrees of freedom&' for controlling a game. In that sense, ita4a4s a lot like Sonya4a4s Move controllers for the PlayStation 3. The price of the Hydra is expected to be under $100 but isna4a4t final yet.&''The controller will also be featured in a special Portal 2 bundle later this year.In a very wise move, OnStar announced a rear-view car mirror that would connect any vehicle to its service &8212' even if the car isna4a4t from its parent company, GM. Ita4a4s a simple way to give any vehicle some very useful features, including the ability to ask OnStar operators questions, a 911 button, anti-theft support and more. The mirror will sell for $299, while service will run you $18.95 a month, or $199 a year.Next Story: Intel showering employees with 4X bonuses Previous Story: Video game sales were down 6 percent in 2010PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: 4G, Android, Android 3.0, Atrix, cars, CES, CES 2011, LTE, PlayBook, Razer Hydra, Series 9, Surface 2, Touch Mouse, XoomCompanies: Google, Microsoft, motorola, OnStar, Razer, RIM, Samsung, Verizon Tags: 4G, Android, Android 3.0, Atrix, cars, CES, CES 2011, LTE, PlayBook, Razer Hydra, Series 9, Surface 2, Touch Mouse, XoomCompanies: Google, Microsoft, motorola, OnStar, Razer, RIM, Samsung, VerizonDevindra Hardawar is VentureBeat's lead mobile writer and East Coast correspondent.
