Customers can choose between a black or white model. The company's 16GB version retails for $649, while the 32GB option is available for $749.Apple currently sells locked versions of the iPhone for $199 and $299 for the 16GB and 32GB models, respectively.&quot;If you don't want a multiyear service contract or if you prefer to use a local carrier when traveling abroad, the unlocked iPhone 4 is the best choice,&quot; Apple writes on the device's product page. &quot;It arrives without a micro-SIM card, so you'll need an active micro-SIM card from any supported GSM carrier worldwide.&quot;That last statement is perhaps most important to potential customers. Apple's unlocked smartphones will only be capable of running on AT&amp;T and T-Mobile networks in the U.S. The company said it will also work around the world on &quot;supported GSM carriers.&quot;Unlocking the iPhone has long been the practice of some iPhone owners. Over the years, several unlocking tools have been made available to people who wanted to break from the grasps of AT&amp;T and try out T-Mobile in the U.S. Last August, for instance, the iPhone Dev Team released an unlock solution for the iPhone 4, called &quot;ultrasn0w,&quot; that allowed users who had jailbroken their iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 3G to bring the device to another carrier.But those who wanted more official means of unlocking the smartphone have been forced to wait it out in the U.S. while other consumers around the world had their pick of Apple's unlocked devices. Last year, Apple started selling unlocked iPhone 4 units to customers in Canada after it offered the same deal to U.K. customers.Rumors of an unlocked iPhone 4 hitting the U.S. cropped up over the weekend when Twitter user @chronicwire started divulging details on the devices. The person correctly claimed that Apple would be selling the 16GB and 32GB black and white iPhone 4 models.But exactly how long U.S. customers will be able to enjoy the unlocked option remains to be seen.Earlier this year, AT&amp;T announced its plans to acquire T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom for $39 billion. If that deal is approved by regulators in the coming months, there will be just one GSM carrier in the U.S., and the need for an unlocked iPhone 4 will be diminished.However, it won't be eliminated. As Apple points out numerous times on its unlocked-iPhone 4 page, the devices are especially useful for global travelers who want to quickly switch carriers while on the go. <description><![CDATA[The Shepherds Flat wind farm is expected to be fully operational in 2012 and supply 235,000 average U.S. homes.(Credit:General Electric)Google today said that it will invest about $100 million in the very large Shepherd's Flat wind project in Oregon, its second direct investment in renewable energy in two weeks.Shepherds Flat is projected to be the largest wind farm in the world, able to generate 845 megawatts and supply enough energy for 235,000 average U.S. homes when it is online next year. GE Energy Financial Services and Caithness Energy are existing owners of the project near Arlington, Ore., which will take up about 30 square miles.Last week, Google said it invested $186 million in the Ivanpah solar power plant project now under construction, which is its largest stake in a renewable-energy venture. The company is investing in renewable energy, either directly in projects or by betting on green-technology start-ups, to earn a return on its money and help expand renewable energy, said Rick Needham, the director of green business operations at Google.&quot;We're excited about helping deliver clean energy to the grid and we hope this latest investment encourages other companies to think about ways they can help accelerate the deployment of more renewable energy,&quot; he said in a company blog, adding that Google is on the &quot;lookout&quot; for more projects that make business sense. The Shepherds Flat project is interesting to the technology-oriented people at Google, Needham said, because it will be the first large-scale wind farm that will use direct-drive turbinessupplied by GE. Using giant permanent magnets, these turbines can generate electricity without the typical gear box construction, a technology which promises to improve the efficiency and reliability of turbines. To date, Google has invested $350 million in clean-energy projects. Energy developers Sumitomo and Tyr Energy, a subsidiary of Itochu, are also investing in the Shepherds Flat project along with Google, representing $500 million altogether, according to GE Financial Services.Under a 20-year power purchase agreement, the wind farm will supply electricity to Southern California Edison. <description><![CDATA[Chatter.com, customer relationship management software provider Salesforce&amp;'s enterprise-style social network, is going live on Monday and the company is sparing no expense to try to capture a market that has mostly jumped on board with other collaboration startups like Yammer and Box.net.Chatter.com is basically a stripped down version of Chatter in Salesforce&amp;'s customer relationship management (CRM) service. The site is pegged as a Facebook-style social network for businesses that makes it easier for employees to communicate and share files amongst themselves. Like Yammer and other collaboration services, the site allows users to upload and share files, comment on them and view up-to-date activity streams.Users enter their work email address into a sign-up box on Chatter.com and get going from there a4&quot; just like Yammer. They can set up a profile, complete with all the bells and whistles Facebook has.Chatter.com was officially announced at Dreamforce in December, but details were pretty sparse.While Salesforce doesn&amp;'t want there to be a limit on how many files users can upload, there is a theoretical limit that free Chatter.com users can reach, said Kraig Swensrud, senior vice president of product marketing at Salesforce. So it&amp;'s similar to other sites that use a freemium model to attract new users a4&quot; Salesforce just isn&amp;'t being explicit in what the limit is.&amp;''We don&amp;'t want to be in the business of charging for storage, we want everyone to use the cloud for storage,&amp;'' Swensrud said. &amp;''It&amp;'s a more efficient model, it&amp;'s been proven on the web by Dropbox and Gmail.&amp;''Users can preview files on the website without having to own the software to view it and edit it on their computers. That includes software like Microsoft Word, Adobe Illustrator and others. Box.net, for example, is a pure enterprise-style Dropbox with some additional micro-blogging features duct taped on top. Yammer also has file-sharing features, as does Huddle. The primary play here is to try to snag new customers for Salesforce&amp;'s main CRM software a4&quot; the market for Chatter has around 65 million businesses, Swensrud said.To compete initially with Yammer and make a splash in the collaboration space, the company launched Chatter, a micro-blogging service. The service quickly picked up around 60,000 customers, and its biggest customer, Dell, has around 100,000 active users. The rest of its paying clients have around 5,000 active users, according to a presentation at todaya4a4s conference. Salesforce thenturned the service loose on the freemium revenue model in order to compete with other collaboration startups (it cost non-Salesforce users $15 per user per month beforehand.)Chatter.com users will also be able to dive into the mobile applications on the iPad, iPhone and BlackBerry without having to pay for the official Chatter service. Like Chatter.com, mobile free Chatter users will just get access to a stripped down version of the main Chatter service that isn&amp;'t connected to Salesforce&amp;'s CRM software. Swensrud was still mum as to when Chatter would appear on devices running Google&amp;'s Android mobile operating system a4&quot; though the application was announced at Dreamforce last year.To attract those new customers, Salesforce is running Chatter advertisements just before and after the Black-Eyed Peas perform at this year&amp;'s Super Bowl half-time show. <description><![CDATA[Netflix has confirmed a deal to air an original television series starring Kevin Spacey on its internet streaming service in a deal that changes the game for traditional TV programming.Under the deal, Netflix will run the &amp;''House of Cards&amp;'' political drama being directed by Oscar-nominated director David Fincher as an exclusive on its streaming video service late next year. This kind of deal could turn Netflix into a premiere network much like Time Warner&amp;'s HBO or CBS&amp;'s Showtime, if Netflix continues to accumulate more programming. And that could shift the balance of power from Hollywood studios to Netflix, which was previously just one more digital distribution channel.Netflix is gaining power because it has more than 20 million subscribers for its movie service, an audience that is closing in on the 28 million subscribers that HBO has on cable TV. Netflix is thus in a position to disrupt traditional movie and TV service providers as it consolidates power on the internet.Ted Sarandos, chief content officer at Netflix, told the Wall Street Journal that Netflix will pay a portion of production costs for the series, with Media Rights Capital (the independent studio creating the project) financing the rest. Sarandos declined to say how much Netflix is paying for the exclusive online rights. But Netflix&amp;'s fee for production costs is capped if the show goes over budget.House of Cards is based on a book and BBC miniseries of the same name. Sarandos said that Netflix will take advantage of the web by airing as many as four episodes at the same time so that users can immerse themselves in the content. He said, &amp;''There is no reason for us to be tied to traditional business models.&amp;''The Wall Street Journal noted that Netflix&amp;'s move into original programs is similar to the dawn of cable TV in the 1980s, when most networks had little original content. They started creating more original programs to run exclusively on their networks to differentiate themselves. That&amp;'s how HBO, Starz, Showtime and others were born. But the model brings risks for Netflix, which doesn&amp;'t have experience producing high-quality content or picking the right shows.Netflix&amp;'s move comes after the pay-TV networks brushed it off. HBO decided not to sell Netflix any streaming rights, and Showtime waits a couple of seasons before licensing episodes. Such strategies would have doomed Netflix to distributing old content. In response to the growing power of Netflix, I suspect that the studios and pay-TV networks will try to find digital distribution alternatives to Netflix. That could be good for emerging alternatives such as OnLive, which plans to offer movie streaming services as well.Netflix is committed to 26 episodes.In other news, Netflix has been hit with five lawsuits in the past two months accusing it of violating user privacy rights.
