General Electric Chief Executive Jeffrey Immelt defended the nuclear industry's safety record today during a trip to Tokyo to show support to the operator of a stricken nuclear plant using reactors designed by the U.S. conglomerate.Immelt met with executives at Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), operator of the Fukushima power plant that was crippled by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami and is leaking radiation in the worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986.GE and its nuclear business partner Hitachi have sent over 1,000 workers to help with the so far unsuccessful efforts to get the plant under control."We have more than 1,000 engineers who have worked around the clock since the incident began and we will continue short-term, medium-term and long-term work with Tepco due to this horrific national disaster," Immelt told reporters after a meeting with Japan's trade minister."But this is an industry that operated effectively for 40 years. And that's my expectation," he said.A GE Japan spokeswoman later told Reuters that Immelt excluded the Chernobyl incident when referring to the industry's safety record over the past four decades because it did not involve facilities designed by Western or Japanese firms.Related links &149' Nuclear safer than coal, China official says &149' Energy CEO: Costs, not safety, block new nukes &149' Nukes 101: Up close and personal with nuclear powerGeneral Electric is preparing to ship more than 20 gas turbines to Japan to help ease an electricity shortage triggered by the March 11 disaster, which knocked out about one-fifth of Tepco's generating capacity, the spokeswoman said.Immelt said GE would donate up to $10 million to Japan for humanitarian support. The earthquake left nearly 28,000 people dead or missing.GE wholly built one of the six reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi power plant. It constructed two others jointly with Toshiba.
Google is making priority markers default in Gmail.(Credit:Rafe Needleman/CNET)MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--Google is giving its Priority Inbox feature more priority. Speaking here at the Inbox Love event, Gmail product lead Paul McDonald said the service's priority indicators would soon start showing up even in in-boxes of users who have not turned on the Priority Inbox feature. Gmail users won't be forced into viewing their in-boxes in the segregated Priority view, but McDonald showed how the little yellow flags that indicate a high-priority message will soon be displayed by default in the standard, unprioritized view. Users will be able to train the feature by turning the indicators on individual messages on and off. A new pop-up message will alert users on log-in to several different "in-box types" that users can select from. In addition to "Classic," users will be able to choose Unread first, Starred first, Important first, and Priority Inbox. The selection will be reversible at any time. McDonald did not say when the changes would be launched.

0 Vote(s)

If youa4a4ve ever played a game like Angry Birds on the iPhone and the iPad, youa4a4ve probably been frustrated by the fact that you have to start over each time &8212' your saved games dona4a4t transfer. A new startup called FTW (which stands for a4AFor the Wina4, a popular phrase among Intenet users for expressing enthusiasm) wants to change that.Founder Mark Burstiner, who was demonstrating the service on-stage this morning at the Launch conference in San Francisco, said that his company offers an application programming interface (API) that game developers can connect to. Then saved games are synchronized across the different versions of their games on multiple devices. As an example, Burstiner showed off a Tic Tac Toe game on both an iPhone and an iPad on-stage, where after each move he saved the game and the change was reflected on the other device.Burstiner acknowledged that this is something that a game developer could add on their own, but he said it would take about 140 hours of work, and besides, the developer should be a4Abuilding more games rather than more features for the one game.a4The expert judges at the conference had some reservations about the concept, particularly about whether this concept has long-term legs. Burstiner said that a4Acloud gaminga4 services like OnLive, where everything happens online and no cross-device syncing is needed, are probably the future. But it will be a long time before that becomes a reality, he said. and even then it still wona4a4t represent the entire industry.FTW is currently looking for iPhone, iPad, and Nintendo DS game developers to participate in its beta test. The company is still experimenting with business model, but it plans to charge both users and larger developers to use the service (indie developers will have free access).Next Story: StorkBrokers wants to be a personalized eBay for child&'s goods Previous Story: Find friends to go squirrel fishing with Stomp.ioPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: game syncs, launch2011, mobile games, saved gamesCompanies: FTWPeople: Mark Burstiner Tags: game syncs, launch2011, mobile games, saved gamesCompanies: FTWPeople: Mark BurstinerAnthony is a senior editor at VentureBeat, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
