Cogentrix plans to use solar panels from Amonix, whose dual-axis panels follow the sun's movement.(Credit:Amonix)Cogentrix Energy has been granted a $90.6 million conditional loan guarantee from the Department of Energy to build a 30-megawatt concentrated photovoltaic solar plant in Alamosa, Colo., the company announced yesterdayThe company also said it plans to source a minimum of 80 percent of the solar farm components from within the U.S. That promise is significant given the size and scope of the solar farm, and its technology. The Alamosa Solar Generating Project will be the largest solar project in the world using high concentrated photovoltaics (HCPVs) with a dual-axis tracking system. That means that each concentrated solar panel is mounted on a tracking system that rotates in conjunction with the sun's daily movement, maximizing its direct sunlight exposure and, hence, its electricity production.Cogentrix, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Goldman Sachs Group, plans to use solar panels made by Amonix.Amonix, which is based in California and has a manufacturing facility in Nevada, is known for using Fresnel lenses in its utility-scale CPVs. The company claims that when used in conjunction with its dual-axis rotating tracking system, its HCPV solar farms operate 40 percent more efficiently than farms using fixed-mount conventional solar panels.Amonix received $129 million in Series B funding from venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins in April 2010, and prior to that $25 million in Series A funding from the Goldman Sachs Group.A successful mega-farm using such technology could serve as a commercial example for the world and generate more interest in dual-axis HCPV set-ups. And a successful mega-farm using U.S. components for this type of technology, could further generate interest in the U.S.-based solar components themselves.Cogentrix announced in February had chosen Mortenson Construction to be the general contractor for the project. While Mortenson is one of the largest power contractors doing business U.S., it also happens to be a U.S.-based, family-owned construction company. When complete, the Alamosa solar farm will generate about 75,000 megawatt-hours of electricity per year, enough to power about 6,500 Colorado homes, according to the DOE.As part of the deal, the electric utility Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCo) will purchase the farm's entire generated electricity supply. PSCo is a subsidiary of the electricity and natural gas giant Xcel Energy. Xcel Energy is the company that contracted Cogentrix to design, build, and operate the plant.

0 Vote(s)

You are, no doubt, catching up on your sleep after getting up in the middle of the night to watch all of the Royal Wedding. You will have enjoyed your favorite moments: admiring the slimness of the bride, the baldness of the groom, or the wonderful joy of the cartwheeling clergyman. However, the Web seems to have spoken with a resounding definitiveness and taken one small image of one small girl and turned it into a meme for the ages. Or at least the week. The picture in question involves neither kissing nor hugging. Instead, it is one small section of a kissing and hugging photo--3-year-old bridesmaid Grace Van Cutsem covering her ears as planes of war took the day off from bombing somewhere or other to fly overhead Buckingham Palace.Hardly had the wedding dress been copied in a hundred countries than images of the little girl began appearing on pictures of characters that the Web would like to silence: Donald Trump, for example.(Credit:Screenshot: Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)It wasn't long before another wag had attempted to silence Republican teapot, Michelle Bachman.Sadly, the underrated Rebecca Black, who made everyone sing "Friday," voluntarily or not, also received some ear-covering love.Of course, little Grace has already been graced with a Twitter hashtag, frowningflowergirl. There, you will find links to her ear-blocking the Numa Numa Guy and even, quite strangely, Kanye West and Taylor Swift.(Credit:Screenshot: Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)Someone even had the sacrilegious bent to attach her to Justin Bieber. Some Twitterers have even chosen to use little Grace as their profile photo. Incredibly, some of these appear to work in the media. And might you imagine that the Frowning Flower Girl already has her own, frightfully unofficial, Twitter feed Oh, but of course. There she offers a lot of tweets that begin with "Me hearing..." followed by a few words and a link to a little Photoshop creativity. If you thought that the Frowning Flower Girl's feed was created by someone neutral, you would, of course, be in error. For, yes, the creators manage to take an ear-covering poke at Apple and Steve Jobs. You cannot control the Web. Once it decides it's going to take you to its bosom, you simply have to go with it. For at least 48 hours. And then, well, it might just get a little dull.(Credit:Screenshot: Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

0 Vote(s)

Nokia and Microsoft plan a &34'third ecosystem,&34' an alliance that touches all parts of the mobile phone business.(Credit:Nokia)Microsoft and Nokia announced a broad mobile phone partnership today that joins two powerful but lagging companies into mutually reliant allies in the mobile phone market. As expected, Nokia plans to use Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system as part of a plan to recover from competitive failings detailed in Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop's "burning platform" memo. But it's deeper than just an agreement to install the OS on Nokia's phones. Instead, the companies call it an attempt to build a "third ecosystem," acknowledging that competing with Apple's iOS and Google's Android involves a partnership that must encompass phones, developers, mobile services, partnerships with carriers, and app stores to distribute software.Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, left, and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer explained their company&39's new tight alliance for mobile phones at an analyst and strategy meeting in London.(Credit:screenshot by Stephen Shankland/CNET)"There are other mobile ecosystems. We will disrupt them. There will be challenges. We will overcome them. Success requires speed. We will be swift," Elop and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said in a boldly worded open letter. "Together, we see the opportunity, and we have the will, the resources and the drive to succeed."The companies will cooperate tightly under an agreement the companies just describe so far as proposed, not final. Under the deal,Windows Phone 7 would become Nokia's "principal" operating system, and Nokia would help Microsoft develop it and ensure a broad range of phones using it are available globally.Nokia will use many Microsoft online services, many of which trail Google rivals, such as Bing for search and maps and AdCenter for advertisements. When it comes to the sales part of the ecosystem, each company brings something to the deal. Microsoft phones will be able to link up with Nokia's agreements for carrier billing--a popular option in parts of the world where credit cards are less common. And Nokia will fold its own app store into the Microsoft Marketplace.Elop the optimistIn a press conference today, Elop and Ballmer touted the alliance as good for both companies' aspirations."A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity, but an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty," Elop said, quoting England's historic prime minister Winston Churchill as he spoke in London. "I am an optimist."It's not immediately clear what needs to be done to make the deal final' details "specific details of the deal are being worked out," the companies said.Nokia, once the dominant power of the mobile phone industry, has ceded the smartphone initiative to Apple'siPhone and Google's Android, and Elop believes Nokia's own Symbian and MeeGo operating systems aren't competitive. Microsoft has tried for years to penetrate the mobile phone market, and although it now has a credible option with Windows Phone 7, it trails Android when it comes to developer interest and the breadth of phones available. The two companies can expect their combined might will be more convincing for software authors debating whether they need to bring their apps to yet another ecosystem. But it's not yet clear how the alliance will extend to another hot new market, tablets, where Microsoft prefers Windows instead of the Windows Phone operating system. In contrast, iOS and Android developers enjoy the same mobile operating system on phones and tablets. An end for Symbian, MeeGoThe partnership means a gradual end for both Symbian and MeeGo, Nokia's mainstream and next-generation smartphone operating systems, respectively. Symbian will be gradually phased out in favor of Windows Phone, though Nokia expects to ship 150 million more Symbian phones in the meantime. Nokia CEO Stephen Elop(Credit:Nokia) And although Nokia will ship a single MeeGo-based smartphone later this year, Elop consigned it to near-oblivion by calling it merely "an opportunity to learn." MeeGo engineers will "change focus into exploration" of future devices and user services.Nokia seriously considered using Google's Android operating system, but feared it would ultimately be a boon for Google and a bane for Nokia, Elop said."We would have difficulties differentiating within that ecosystem," Elop said. Joining the Android world would make it even bigger, "with prices, profits, and everything being pushed down, and value moving to Google."Nokia cost-cuttingAlong with Nokia's new operating system strategy come major internal changes. Leadership in the United States, a large market now awakened to smartphones but where Nokia trails particularly badly, is being replaced. Bureaucracy will be cut. Research and development costs will be cut but R&D will become more productive. And there will be substantial layoffs, in Finland and elsewhere, Elop said, though the company will not move headquarters anywhere else."Already evolving rapidly at Nokia is a change in attitude and behavior" that shows "the fighting spirit of Nokia worldwide and the fighting spirit of the Finnish people," Elop said. In communicating with employees about the change, including an company-wide message earlier this morning, he added, "We've been vocal and transparent about the challenge. I think it's having a positive effect."Nokia will pay Microsoft royalties for use of its operating system, but apparently money will likely flow the other way, too, Ballmer and Elop said."We have different forms of value transfer in different directions," Elop said. "We have new opportunities that come from advertising and new forms of monetization.""We the ability to activate users and put them in a position to be more effective in what we call local commerce," added Ballmer. "Nokia has not just got mapping but other assets that we will import, if you will. There are a set of financial considerations for that as well." Nokia is touting its Microsoft alliance on its Web page.(Credit:Nokia) Elop and Ballmer detailed their proposal immediately before the vast Mobile World Congress trade show in Barcelona, Spain, where a large number of new Android phones and tablets can be expected. It's uncertain what effect the alliance will have. Microsoft has had strong operating system partnerships with multiple competing PC makers, but the Nokia alliance, with mutually developed products and shared road maps, appears much deeper than the average relationship Microsoft has with hardware makers. That could encourage those who've made strong Android commitments--HTC, Motorola, Sony Ericsson, LG Electronics, Samsung, and more--to double down. After all, they're all enjoying a period of relative freedom with Nokia in its present relatively uncompetitive state, and strongly pushing Windows Phone products arguably would be abetting the enemy.Although the alliance is nonexclusive, Nokia clearly is becoming the premier Windows Phone partner. "There are things we are planning to do with Nokia that are unique," Ballmer said. The announcement was accompanied by a YouTube video featuring Microsoft and Nokia's chief executives praising the deal."Today, Nokia and Microsoft intend to enter into a strategic alliance," Elop said in the video, a precursor of a turnaround plan he's set to detail later today at an analyst conference in London. "Together, we will bring consumers a new mobile experience, with stellar hardware, innovative software, and great services. We will create opportunities beyond anything that currently exists."Ballmer said the partnership "brings the brands mobile consumers want, like Bing, Office, and of course Xbox Live." Updated several times, most recently at 3:18 a.m. PT with further details of the partnership..

0 Vote(s)

Judging by the elated reactions to today's announcement of the iPhone 4, a significant contingent is poised to switch to Verizon, or switch to theiPhone, anyway, if they're already a Big Red subscriber. The Verizon iPhone has plenty to offer, but keep in mind that it won't do it all. There are still plenty of other phones on Verizon's deep bench poised to deliver on superb hardware specs and software capabilities--including brilliant displays, high-resolution cameras, support for Flash video, HD video capture and playback, and HDMI support. At CES last week, we saw four new 4G LTE Android handsets all bound for Verizon--these are sure to compete with the iPhone in a spec-to-spec showdown. With that in mind, here's a gallery of excellent Verizon contenders, both present and future. It could turn out that the smartphone you're waiting for isn't an iPhone at all.iPhone's Verizon rivals (photos)

0 Vote(s)

Salesforce has hired IBM enterprise sales pro Jeff Lautenbach to head its enterprise sales division as it gets ready to take on some of the largest companies in the world as customers &8212' and as rivals. The company, which first made its name a decade ago as a provider of Web-based customer-relationship management software to smaller companies for whom traditional enterprise software was unaffordable, has finally realized it is playing with the bigger dogs in the park. The company&'s major competition comes from other customer relationship management (CRM) software providers like Oracle. They aren&'t run-of-the-mill tech companies, they are behemoths with massive revenues that demand a little more attention than some of the other smaller CRM providers Salesforce has typically competed with.Lautenbach was with IBM a4" another major competitor for Oracle a4" for 20 years, where he manned the company&'s 1000-strong enterprise sales team. He&'ll be responsible for pitching the company&'s service major enterprises a4" like Dell, a current Salesforce customer, for example a4" rather than Salesforce&'s traditional strategy of targeting business managers.Salesforce looks like it has been building up its resources to attack the enterprise market in full force a4" including some targets outside of its typical CRM software market. The company has acquired three companies in just under two months. Salesforce dropped a whopping $212 million for Heroku to bolster its development tools for its web services and picked up Manymoon to expand into some other cloud services. The company also recently launched Chatter.com, an enterprise-style social network that is free and open to everyone. Salesforce does want to convince Chatter.com users to sign up for theofficialChatter service, and then Salesforce&'s CRM service, but it&'s still a bit outside of Salesforce&'s enterprise activity. Salesforce initially launched Chatter as a Twitter-like service to compete initially with Yammer and make a splash in the collaboration space.Salesforce also recently named former Microsoft government sales guy Matt Miszewski to head the company&'s government sales team.Next Story: Is your avatar hot or not Blue Mars iPhone app will let others vote Previous Story: On the GreenBeat: Power-One forecasts weaker demand in Europe, Kior nears $1B loan for wood-to-fuel researchPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: CRM, customer relationship management, enterprise, enterprise salesCompanies: Dell, IBM, Oracle, salesforce, SAPPeople: Jeff Lautenbach Tags: CRM, customer relationship management, enterprise, enterprise salesCompanies: Dell, IBM, Oracle, salesforce, SAPPeople: Jeff LautenbachMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
Activision Blizzard is starting its slow strip tease leading up to the launch of Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3, which is expected to debut this fall. That&'s a big deal because Modern Warfare 2 was one of the best-selling video games of all time and Activision Blizzard has all but promised its investors that a Call of Duty game will come out every year. The Modern Warfare series has a different storyline than Call of Duty Black Ops, the best-selling game of the holidays for 2010.The company has created a mysterious web site, www.findmarkarov.com, which has nothing but a running timer. It also sent dog tags to the press with the site printed on it. Makarov was one of the enemies in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, which debuted two years ago and was the last game made by game studio Infinity Ward. Since this fall will be two years later, Infinity Ward is due to ship another game. Black Ops was made by sister studio Treyarch.Activision Blizzard may reveal the game during the Game Developers Conference next week. That&'s what it did in 2009 when it revealed Modern Warfare 2 for the first time. Raven Software and Sledgehammer games are reportedly helping Infinity Ward finish the game. The font for the counter uses the typical Call of Duty style. And teasers are pretty common in the video game industry as multimillion dollar marketing campaigns for blockbuster games begin far ahead of the launch date for a game, in hopes of spreading awareness far and wide.Next Story: Consumer Reports wona4a4t recommend the Verizon iPhone.
