<description><![CDATA[The developer of a proposed wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island doubled the size of the project, saying that greater scale would allow it to sell the electricity produced at a lower price.Deepwater Wind said it now plans to install 200 wind turbines some 20 miles off the shore of the smallest U.S. state. The project could generate enough electricity to meet the needs of 800,000 typical American homes.The high price of electricity generated by proposed offshore wind farms has generated fresh public opposition to the projects as developers reach agreements to sell their power to utilities at more than double local prevailing rates.Cape Wind, which intends to start building a wind farm off Massachusetts next year, signed an agreement to sell its power to utility National Grid at 18.7 cents per kilowatt hour and a smaller Deepwater project reached a deal to sell electricity to the same utility for 24.4 cents per kilowatt hour. Those are more than double local prevailing rates.Deepwater said it expected the larger wind farm to sell electricity in the &quot;mid-teens,&quot; referring to a rate of cents per kilowatt hour.Securing a long-term contract to sell power is a key step in obtaining financing for a wind farm.Business interests ranging from Wal-Mart Stores to the lobbying group Associated Industries of Massachusetts protested the price in Cape Wind's contract, saying it would push up costs at a time when companies can ill-afford it.Providence, R.I.-based Deepwater, backed by hedge fund D.E. Shaw, said it expects to begin building the facility, which will include a transmission line connecting southern New England to eastern Long Island, in 2014 with the turbines beginning to run by 2015. The larger project would be capable of producing a 1,000 megawatts of power.The United States leads the world with installed wind capacity, with some 35,600 megawatts of turbines installed. That's all on land, though.Cape Wind, which aims to build a 420-megawatt installation, led the drive to build offshore U.S. wind farms a decade ago. It faced a thicket of delays, ranging from regulatory hurdles to public opposition that the spinning turbines could spoil beachfront views and harm shipping.About a dozen offshore projects have been proposed off the eastern United States--waters off the West Coast become too deep too quickly to make offshore wind practical there.Deepwater aims to avoid the aesthetics complaint by installing its turbines far enough out to sea that they will be barely visible from the shore. They&amp;'re, like,so 2008.There&amp;'s been a surge of attention over the last year towards products that that can charge your smartphone wirelessly, like the devicesPowerMat makes. Just set it down on the charging mat and let your phone juice up.But according to a new report from Pike Research, the technology that makes your plug-free iPhone charging possible is also showing promise for uses in other products &amp;8212' other consumer electronics, military and industrial applications and &amp;8212' yes, electric vehicles. In fact, the report predicts that that wireless charging for electric vehicles will be a $272 million business by 2015.As electric cars prepare to go to market in the next year or so, charging infrastructure is working overtime to keep up. Companies like EcoTality and Coloumb have been rolling out networks of chargers across the country, fueled in part by government money. In Houston, power plant company NRG Energy recently unveiled its own privately-financed network of charging stations, complete with a set of flat-rate monthly charging packages.The technology could make charging electric cars more convenient &amp;8212' say, embedding a wireless charger under a parking spot. One company trying to do this is called Plugless Power. If their solution works and is affordable, maybe behavioral changes required of electric vehicle drivers &amp;8212' likeremembering to plug in your Leaf or Volt after bringing in the groceries &amp;8212' isn&amp;'t such a big deal after all.Another application for wireless charging is done by electric bus-maker Proterra, which already has a FastFill bus charging station (pictured, below)that uses wireless controls to charge docked vehicles.&amp;''Buses would be a perfect application,&amp;'' said John Gartner, analyst for Pike Research, because buses have to make stops at bus shelters, so they could get incremental charge-ups at each stop.As the technology develops, there could be more range, too. One company, WiTricity, is working on a family of wireless electrical components that, when embedded in devices like laptops or flat-screen TVs, will allow them to be powered without plugs over &amp;''room-scale distances,&amp;'' so no need for charging mats or close proximity. The company&amp;'s technology originated at MIT.If technology along that vein could be adapted for electric cars, a whole host of possibilities could open up. I immediately thought of strips of highway that could charge cars as they whiz by, but Gartner tells me it&amp;'s been tried in South Korea and found to be way too expensive.Still, the question of making charging convenient and accessible is an important one as electric cars look to hit the roads in growing numbers over the next few years. <description><![CDATA[Biofuels and biochemicals company LS9 recently got a new CEO, and now it has a fresh pool of cash too.The money raised will go to products &amp;''ready&amp;'' for commercial production, according to a company statement, which seems like a distinction from actually going into commercial production. LS9 opened a demo plant in Florida earlier this year (pictured). New CEO Ed Dineen told us earlier this month that he&amp;'s planning to make a big push in Brazil and is also eyeing the strong developing economics of India and China. He&amp;'s also looking to strengthen the companies partnerships, which currently include a deal to develop renewable chemicals for use in consumer goods with Procter &amp;amp' Gamble and a deal with Chevron.One of LS9a4a4s selling points is that it uses specially-engineered microbes capable of converting plant-based materials into fuels and chemicalsin just one step, compared to the multiple-phase processes of some of its competitors. <description><![CDATA[The first business day of every month is when automakers release sales data for the previous month. Today, we got January&amp;'s sales figures, which are an improvement over last January&amp;'s.But the question that we keep hearing is: Which sells better, the 2011 Nissan Leaf or the 2011 Chevrolet VoltThey&amp;'re the first two plug-in electric vehicles sold in the U.S. by major manufacturers in a decade, and now they&amp;'ve been on sale for roughly six weeks. The first Leaf was delivered in San Francisco on December 12 (pictured, above), and the first Volt followed three days later in New Jersey (pictured, below).Thus far (as of yesterday), the Volt is decisively in the lead, with a total of 647 cars delivered through the end of January. That represents 326 in December, plus 321 more last month.In comparison, only 106 Nissan Leafs have been delivered: 19 in December, and 87 last month.(For the record, Smart also delivered its very first Smart ForTwo Electric Drive last month as well.)Don&amp;'t go jumping to conclusions about which car will do better in the marketplace, though. Both the Volt and the Leaf are heavily back-ordered, and only modest numbers of each will be built during 2011 as the production line and supply chain ramp up.Nissan has said it will build 20,000 Leafs for the U.S. market&amp;8211'out of global production of 50,000&amp;8211'this year, and Chevrolet initially committed to 10,000 Volts, all of them for the U.S.In light of robust demand for Volts, however, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson has said the company is looking at ways to raise production this year, perhaps to 20,000 or more. It also accelerated the pace of Volt rollouts nationwide, so that the range-extended electric car will be available in all 50 states by the end of this year.It won&amp;'t be until 2013, when Nissan quintuples its global Leaf production capacity to 250,000, that true market demand for plug-in cars starts to become apparent.
