<description><![CDATA[RIM yesterday reiterated that it's unable to provide the Indian government with the means to access secure e-mails on its enterprise network, despite a looming deadline.Robert Crow, Research In Motion's vice president for Industry, Government and University, repeated the company's familiar position. Speaking to reporters yesterday in New Delhi, Crow said that RIM does not have the ability to turn over the keys to the encrypted data flowing over its BlackBerry Enterprise Server because those keys are held by its corporate customers.Despite promises to India that it would offer a permanent solution by January 31, Crow said that &quot;there is no possibility of us providing any kind of a solution. There is no solution, there are no keys to be handed,&quot; according to Reuters.Earlier this month, RIM had given Indian officials the ability to monitor its consumer messaging services, which include BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and BlackBerry Internet Services (BIS) e-mail. But that access does not extend to the company's Enterprise Server, which it sees as a type of secure virtual private network (VPN) for its business customers.RIM has been facing challenges by India as well as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, all of whom have been demanding access to its secure customer data for national security reasons. The nations see such access as a necessary tool in their fight against terrorists and have all at one time threatened bans against the BlackBerry service unless RIM complies.The company narrowly averted a ban on BlackBerry services in India in October by offering an interim solution and promising a permanent one by January 31. Last year, RIM faced potential bans from the UAE and Saudi Arabia, but it was able to work out agreements with those two nations that allowed its services to continue. Though RIM hasn't revealed how it averted those bans, some reports say the company was able to work around the issue by setting up local BlackBerry servers.Crow said that the overall problem extends beyond just the BlackBerry network.This is not an issue unique to BlackBerry. BlackBerry represents a very small fraction of the total population of VPN in India,&quot; he said, according to the AFP news service.India has also been after Google and Skype to allow access to their services as well, asking them to install local servers for the purpose of monitoring e-mail and messaging.Crow has been meeting with Indian officials from security agencies and the country's ministry to discuss the issue and said that further meetings are planned during his current visit, Reuters reported.<br/><br/>0 Vote(s) ]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[Last night, social introduction service Hashable rolled out a new site design to members.  While the site is still semi-closed (you need an invite or introduction from an existing member to get ina4&quot;the first 500 readers to follow @hashable on Twitter will get one), it is playing with some very interesting ways to rank your online social connections.  One of the new features on the site allows you to see your contacts by the strength of your relationship on Hashable.  The more interactions you have with that person, and whether or not they reciprocate, determines whether you are &amp;''tight,&amp;'', &amp;''connected,&amp;'' or merely &amp;''acquainted.&amp;''  Hashable is taking on LinkedIn in a very lightweight way.  Instead of static degrees of separation, you can see exactly who you are connected with has the strongest connection to someone else you might be seeking an introduction to.  Hashable is also now starting to show &amp;''hashbits&amp;'' whenever you post a connection. A hashbit is just a serendipitous bit of information showing how one person you know is also connected to someone else you know.  You can connect with people on Hashable either through Twitter or email, and it serves as both a business introduction service and a souped-up online address book.  CEO Michael Yavonditte calls it a &amp;''relationship book&amp;'' because it tracks your business relationships over time.  It starts out with a simple intro (you introduce people by using the hashtag &amp;''intro&amp;'' in a Tweet and their Twitter handles), but early users are also recording when they justmet someone, or go out for drinks, lunch, or dinner.  You can use Hashable to publicly thank someone, or make up your own hashes. I use it to record when a startup founder gives me a demo.  These descriptive tags make those hashbits more interesting because they flesh out how people are related.  Imagine when people start hashing their dates on this service.The more you use Hashable, the more points, or Hashcred, you get.  Every city has a leaderboard, and soon there wil be leaderboards by industry and profession.  So people will be competing to be the startup lawyer with the most Hashcred.  It&amp;'s a way to measure status for super-networkers.  But even if you are not into the competitive aspect of the service, you can use it just as a simple way to keep track of the people you meet and write notes about those meetings either to yourself in private or publicly. Then later on if you are going to meet that person again you can see your history, or you can search by hashtag to see all the demos you&amp;'ve gotten or people you have justmet.  And the more you interact with any given person, the stronger your connection strength becomes.Once Hashable opens up more publicly in the coming weeks, we&amp;'ll see if this new form of business networking catches on. <description><![CDATA[Over the weekend, the Wall Street Journal ran an article pointing out how Google is increasingly favoring its own properties, in search results over natural results to outside sites which previously commanded the top spots.   This practice is especially noticeable with Google Places and local results, but there are other examples as well from product and mortgage search to health search.  We&amp;'ve seen these spats before, particularly between Google and Yelp.  Citysearch and Tripadvisor are also taking a traffic hit, it seems.  Google responded yesterday with a post on its public policy blog titled &amp;''Local Search: It&amp;'s all about the best answers for users.&amp;''Yeah, right.  Don&amp;'t kid yourself.  It&amp;'s all about what is best for Google.  How else do you explain the preponderance of Google Places listings in local search results for queries such as &amp;''NY Chiropractor&amp;'' (see screenshot) or &amp;''NYC spa&amp;''  In each case the top 7 links after the paid ads are businesses which just happen to have a Google Places page.   Is it just a coincidence that the top seven links in a row happen to be businesses with Google Places listings (which you can see by clicking on the Google Places links on the right).  There is hardly any room on the all-important first page for any natural results below.  What&amp;'s more, for the chiropractor search the first two Google Places results are ones with yellow &amp;''tags,&amp;'' which are $25 local-search ad units targeted at small businesses.  So even after the regular paid ads highlighted with a pink-shaded background, the next two results are also ads disguised as quasi-natural search results.The Google Places results don&amp;'t always take up nearly the entire first page.  Sometimes they come up in a single box with a smaller font, and just two lines each per listing.  Try searching for &amp;''Columbus mechanic&amp;'' or &amp;''NYC gym&amp;'' and you will see what I mean.  Displaying local results this way is a little less in your face, but the end result is the same.  In both cases, the main link still goes to the businesses&amp;' own websites, but the Google Places links are also prominent.  Either way, the message is clear to local businesses: list your profile in Google Places and you will have a better shot at appearing at the top of the first search results page.Are these results better for users  It depends on how good are the Google Places listings.  Some of them are very good, I will admit.  But try any local search and I bet you will consistently get Google Places results, sometimes taking up most of pagea4&quot;not always at the very top, but always as a block.  They can&amp;'t all be better than results for businesses which don&amp;'t happen to have a Google Places listing.  Remember, Google Places is still fairly new and developing.  Google is clearly using its main search page to push Google Places and make those listings more prominent.  Over time, it will become a self-fulfilling prophesy and those listings will be the best because businesses will learn that is the most important place to be in order to be found by Google. No wonder other SEO-friendly local listings and reviews sites such as Citysearch, TripAdvisor, and Yelp are up in arms about this favoritism. <description><![CDATA[Perennially successful tech investorSequoia Capital is once again setting its sights on Silicon Valley, having raised at least $1.3 billion for a new fund that will zero in on up-and-coming startups, according to a filing released today by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.Sequoia, a storied venture-capital firm that has invested in white-hot tech companies from AdMob to Apple, Cisco, Google, YouTube and a host of others, will call the new fund Sequoia Capital 2010.It most recently poured $27.5 million into Square, the mobile payments startup founded by Twitter creator Jack Dorsey, on Jan. 10. That funding valued Square at $240 million overall.The firm has said in the past that any new fund would focus primarily on early and growth stage companies located in the U.S. and China.Thus far, Sequoia Capital 2010 has secured more than $1.35 billion in capital commitments since last March, Fortune reported today.The University of Michigan Regents, which invests with Sequoia, described the VCs&amp;' plans for the fund in a memo released last July:&amp;''In the U.S., venture investments will be primarily in new technology companies formed in the western part of thecountry, particularly California&amp;'s Silicon Valley. <description><![CDATA[Nokia  CEO Stephen Elop announced a long-rumored partnership with Microsoft  this morning that would make Windows Phone 7 Nokiaa4a4s primary mobile  platform.The  announcement means the end is near for Nokiaa4a4s aging Symbian platform, which  many (myself included) have criticized as being too archaic to compete  with modern platforms like the iPhone OS or Android. And Nokiaa4a4s  homegrown next-generation OS, MeeGo, will no longer be the mythical  savior for the Finnish company, as ita4a4s now being positioned more as an  experiment.We&amp;'ve argued for some time that a move to Windows Phone 7 would make the most sense for Nokia, and after Elop&amp;'s dramatic &amp;''burning platform&amp;'' memo last weekend, it was all but certain that the company would link up with Microsoft.Nokia  wona4a4t just be another Windows Phone 7 adopter like Samsung or HTC. It  will a4Adrive and define the future of Windows Phone,a4 according to an open letter penned by Elop and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.  Nokiaa4a4s hardware expertise will be put to good use for Windows Phone 7,  especially when it comes to its experience with powerful cellphone  cameras, and it will also help Microsoft deliver the platform to a wider  range of price points and international markets.Nokia says that it will continue shipping millions of Symbian devices this year, but it&amp;'s clear that there&amp;'s not much growth left in the platform. By 2012, Symbian will likely be wiped out by Windows Phone entirely, at least when it comes to new devices.Ballmer  joined Elop on stage in London at Nokiaa4a4s Capital Markets event to  introduce the partnership. Microsofta4a4s Bing search  engine and adCenter display ads will be implemented across Nokia devices  (wea4a4re assuming even those not running Windows Phone), while Nokiaa4a4s  Ovi Maps mobile app will be integrated into Microsofta4a4s mapping  services. Nokiaa4a4s Ovi app store will also be a4Aintegrateda4 into  Microsofta4a4s app Marketplace &amp;8212' which, frankly, wona4a4t be missed. And  since Windows Phone 7 includes Xbox Live and Microsoft Office support, Nokiaa4a4s new devices will feature those too.Contrary to previous rumors, Elop isn&amp;'t sacking much of Nokia&amp;'s executive staff. MeeGo head Alberto Torres, not surprisingly, has quit the company, while other executives&amp;' roles are being reshuffled. Still, Elop said there will be &amp;''substantial reductions in employment&amp;'' inside Nokia, which was to be expected.Elop also mentioned that he discussed adopting Android with Google but that it would be difficult for Nokia to differentiate itself from the slew of other Android devices. &amp;''Commoditization risk was very high &amp;8212' prices, profits, everything being pushed down, value being moved out to Google which was concerning to us,&amp;'' he said. European cellular carriers were reportedly worried about a potential Nokia/Google partnership because it would have created an iPhone/Android duopoly.As for MeeGo, Elop clarified that he&amp;'s not giving up on the platform, but it&amp;'s no longer a significant part of Nokia&amp;'s future. The company will ship a single MeeGo device later this year &amp;''as an opportunity to learn.&amp;'' After that, the MeeGo team will focus on different platforms, devices and user experiences. Basically, since the company was too slow in delivering MeeGo, Elop wants Nokia to look for the next major mobile OS innovation.Qt, the developer platform that Nokia has been pushing for some time, which would have allowed applications to work across Symbian and MeeGo devices, is effectively dead as well. It won&amp;'t be supported in Windows Phone 7. Microsoft will instead provide its free developer tools and offer assistance to developers who need help porting their apps to Windows Phone.When it comes to tablets, Elop said Nokia may adopt something from Microsoft or pursue something it&amp;'s been developing internally. With the company currently trying to get its grips on the smartphone market again, I don&amp;'t expect to see it announcing a tablet this year.It&amp;'s also unclear when we&amp;'ll actually see a Nokia Windows Phone. Ballmer said the engineering teams from both companies have spent a lot of time together, but for this partnership to mean anything, Nokia will have to deliver a Windows Phone device by the end of the year. And honestly, the sooner the better.Overall, the news is a big shift for Nokia, which has thus far struggled to innovate in a post-iPhone era. While some Nokia fans may see this as a weakening of the brand, I would argue that partnering with Microsoft was really the company&amp;'s last hope. It will help Nokia get back on its feet and deliver devices that consumers actually want. <description><![CDATA[140Fire, which slaps interactive advertisements like polls on streaming video, announced that it is launching today at the Launch Conference in San Francisco.The advertisements pop up like most other advertisements do on videos a4&quot; as a small bar at the bottom of the video. But instead of linking viewers to a different site, the advertisement features a poll or a number of questions that viewers can answer as they continue watching the video.For example, a Greygoose Vodka ad would pop up during a scene on Mad Men that features cocktails. Viewers can answer a few quick questions and get a suggestion about which drink a4&quot; which naturally features Greygoose Vodka a4&quot; they should make. The advertisement also shows which of the viewer&amp;'s Facebook friends have taken the poll and what drinks the advertisement suggested to them.140Fire can also deliver some more targeted advertising post-roll advertisements based on the polls that appear in the video. If an advertisement pops up that asks the viewer what kind of car they prefer, the post-roll will be an advertisement that features the car they selected. The idea is to deliver more targeted post-roll advertisements that a4&quot; again a4&quot; don&amp;'t link back to another site but still get the point across.The company can also slap advertisements and polls onto live video streams like ESPN3, which features live sports events. 140Fire users can modify the polls and advertisements in real time as well a4&quot; so they can tailor the advertisements to the specific sporting event. For example, a 140Fire user can modify a poll to ask how many free throws a player will make when they step to the line.That seems like it&amp;'s the best application of the technology, said All Things D&amp;'s Kara Swisher, who was an adviser at the Launch Conference. She said the advertisements would also go well with other live events like American Idol a4&quot; but they probably wouldn&amp;'t be welcome on sites like Hulu, where the content is static.140Fire also features an analytics dashboard that shows what demographics accessed the advertisement and what kind of answers they chose. The respondents are broken down into age range, whether they are male or female, and a number of other specific demographics. The site doesn&amp;'t work with YouTube yet, though they are in talks with the company.It looks like 140Fire is a graduate of Y Combinator&amp;'s winter 2010 class. It was originally called 140bets.
