Sirius XM has hit the 20 million subscriber mark, and it's calling on a member of The Beatles to commemorate it.Starting tonight at 5 p.m. PT, several Sirius XM channels, including Paul McCartney's Band On the Run Radio, Howard 101, and Classic Vinyl, will air Paul McCartney's concert live from the Apollo Theater. The concert, which was first announced last month, is accessible at no additional charge for current Sirius or XM subscribers. It has been a good week for Sirius XM. Last Thursday, the company announced that it had re-signed Howard Stern to another five-year contract. The radio personality, who is finishing a five-year deal with Sirius estimated at $500 million, kept listeners on the edge of their seats for months about his plans after 2010. He indicated at times throughout the year that he would either retire or try something new. There was even a rumor swirling around that he was close to inking a deal with Apple to offer his show through iTunes and other Apple-owned platforms.Stern has also been quite outspoken on his show about his contribution to that 20 million subscribers figure, saying that he played an integral role in helping Sirius XM reach that figure. From a financial perspective, Sirius XM has been enjoying a year that some thought impossible a couple years ago.The company announced back in October that it enjoyed a profit of more than $67 million during the third quarter. That followed similarly impressive profits in the first and second quarters, totaling nearly $57 million. It expects to generate $2.8 billion in total revenue this year. That success stands in stark contrast to the company's past performance. In 2008, the satellite radio provider posted a loss of $5.3 billion on $1.65 billion in revenue. Last year, it lost nearly $529 million on $2.39 billion in revenue.

0 Vote(s)

Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices has joined the MeeGo open-source Linux project where it will contribute its expertise to drive the adoption of MeeGo in tablets, smartphones, and other mobile devices.Unveiled earlier this year, MeeGo is an open-source operating system created through a merger of Intel's Moblin OS and Nokia's Maemo software. The MeeGo OS is designed to run on mobile gadgets, including Netbooks, tablets and phones, and on embedded devices, such as connected TVs and in-car systems. The MeeGo project is run by the Linux Foundation, a nonprofit group whose goal is to push the growth and adoption of Linux. AMD was already a "gold"-level member of the Linux Foundation and on its board of directors.AMD announced its new role in the project today at this week's MeeGo conference in Ireland, where both Nokia and the Linux Foundation are trying to drum up interest in MeeGo among developers."MeeGo represents an exciting, open-source mobile operating system we expect to be adopted by mobile and embedded device makers over time," Ben Bar-Haim, corporate vice president of software development for AMD, said in a statement. "We are glad to provide engineering resources to joint industry efforts like MeeGo and expect that this operating system will help drive our embedded plans and create expanded market opportunities for our forthcoming Accelerated Processing Units."

0 Vote(s)

All businesses need capital to grow, and that includes online merchants. Yet such e-commerce vendors are underserved by the financial services industry because traditional underwriting and funding criteria do not account for a virtual commerce business model or the value of recently sold inventory. So believes Atlanta-based Kabbage, which recently launched a new funding service that targets eBay merchants specifically.Online vendors begin with Kabbage by entering their eBay marketplace ID. Using that, Kabbage checks their activity and history on the marketplace' if both are sufficient, it asks the retailer to complete an application. That application is far briefer than most because Kabbage learns much of what it needs about the retailer a4" including sales and credit history, customer traffic and reviews, and competitive information a4" via online data, which it can access in seconds with the applicant''s permission. Kabbage then makes an immediate decision' if approved, the borrower can access funds immediately via PayPal. In general, Kabbage releases funds as the retailer lists more products for sale, thus ensuring that cash flow needs are always met.Kabbage currently serves only eBay sellers based in the U.S., but it aims to add other marketplaces soon, and ultimately to expand internationally. One to partner with or emulate in your neck of the e-commerce woods...
Shopping startup Retailigence says it&'s creating a &''bridge&'' connecting real-world &''brick-and-mortar&'' stores with mobile and web applications. Now the Palo Alto, Calif. company has enlisted some well-known investors to fund its efforts: Draper Fisher Jurvetson and Dave McClure&'s 500 Startups fund.Retailigence takes inventory data from both sophisticated software (like that offered by SAP and NetSuite) and basic spreadsheets, then makes the information available through an application programming interface (API) to developers of location-based apps, shopping apps, and so on. So if a location check-in app is trying to lure you to a store near you with the promise of a hot new product, it can use Retailigence to track whether that product is actually in stock. In addition to DFJ and 500 Startups, ZIG Capital, Global Brain Corporation, and various angel investors participated in Retailigence&'s $1.5 million seed round. The company was incubated at the Founder Institute.Another hot startup called Milo.com offers shoppers a way to see what&'s in stock on the shelves of nearby stores. It sounds like Retailigence isn&'t trying to compete directly with Milo, but rather to provide the data for similar applications.[image via Flickr/Fen Branklin]Next Story: Facebook to launch &''Gmail killer&'' webmail on Monday Previous Story: Verizon brings back Microsoft Kins as feature phones &8212' tech world says &''I told you so&''PrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: location based apps, shopping apps, shopping dataCompanies: 500 Startups, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Founder Institute, Global Brain Corporation, Quest Venture Partners, Retailigence, ZIG CapitalPeople: Dave McClure Tags: location based apps, shopping apps, shopping dataCompanies: 500 Startups, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Founder Institute, Global Brain Corporation, Quest Venture Partners, Retailigence, ZIG CapitalPeople: Dave McClureAnthony is VentureBeat's assistant editor, as well as its reporter on media, advertising, and social networks.
Just after announcing it had raised a $51 million round, thin-film solar cell manufacturer SoloPower announced it would build what will become a 300-megawatt manufacturing facility in Oregon, boosted by a $20 million loan from the Oregon Department of Energy. The first phase will cover a 75-megawatt manufacturing line and create 170 jobs, the company said. The total investment into the Wilsonville, Ore. plant will total $340 million and eventually employ 500 people. SoloPower has also applied for a business energy tax credit worth $20 million from Oregon, and is looking to earn a loan guarantee from the DOE, the company said. This marks one of many surges of activity seen in thin-film solar recently, which seemed to fall on hard times last summer when Applied Materials and Suntech both shut down their thin-film fabs. Thin-film solar panels are relatively cheap but have smaller efficiency rates compared to the predominant crystalline silicon technology. It became a hot concept a couple of years ago when silicon prices soared and entrepreneurs went looking for cost-saving alternatives. Silicon prices have since stabilized, throwing thin-film players into a murky area (though ita4a4s worth noting that top global manufacturer First Solar produces cadmium telluride thin-film panels).SoloPower makes thin-film panels using CIGS technology, named for its ingredients of copper, indium, gallium and de-selenide. While CIGS thin-film boasts higher efficiency rates than cadmium telluride thin-film, it can be costly to manufacture and there are uniformity issues with the film. SoloPower says its secret sauce is a low-cost, highly efficient electroplating manufacturing process.Other thin-film makers have also come out with good news as of late. CIGS player MiaSolannounced it had achieved a bar-setting efficiency rate of 15.7 percent. Stion recently announced plans to invest $500 million in a thin-film manufacturing facility in Mississippi, the first phase of which will bring 100 megawatts of capacity online. AQT Solar said it will build a thin-film plant in South Carolina with a first phase of 30 to 40 megawatts, which will grow to 1 gigawatt by 2014&'s end.And Abound Solar raised $510 million &8212' $400 million from a DOE loan guarantee &8212' to build a facility in Colorado to manufacture its thin-film cadmium telluride panels. U.S. Department of Energy loan chief Jonathan Silver told VentureBeat he believes thin-film may be the U.S.&'s answer to Chinese dominance in crystalline silicon panels. Thanks to generous subsidies from the government there and huge credit lines extended to Chinese solar panel makers, Chinese companies have been able to undercut others in price, to the detriment of U.S. solar startups.Next Story: Capping its best year ever, Intel reports record Q4 earnings Previous Story: Travel startup TripIt acquired for $120MPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Solar, thin film solarCompanies: Abound Solar, DOE, solopower, StionPeople: Jonathan Silver Tags: Solar, thin film solarCompanies: Abound Solar, DOE, solopower, StionPeople: Jonathan SilverIris Kuo is the VentureBeat's lead GreenBeat writer.
