The White House Correspondent's Dinner, an annual tradition where the media and political elite meet to roast/congratulate each other, with mixed results, just finished up. Seth Meyers of "Saturday Night Live" hosted the event, and you should be able to watch replays on C-SPAN if you're interested. One new twist to the proceedings: The White House, which normally plays along with the event even though the chief occupant gets ribbed, has gone all in. Immediately after showing this video--a parody trailer based on "The King's Speech"--they released it on YouTube (via Twitter, of course). The bit isn't LOL-worthy, IMHO. But it does contain jokes, and I think it's noteworthy that they're putting this out there for public consumption, at a time when much of the electorate seems particularly...susceptible to jokes. Even more so if they're easily accessible via Google. Also, as The Atlantic.com's Gabe Snyder points out, the clip contains a Wu Tang Clan sample. Which is sure to upset someone (and please lots of us, too)Meanwhile, you can see all 17 minutes of Obama's presentation here (much sharper, I think--good Fox News dig), via The Washington Post:Story Copyright (c) 2011 AllThingsD.
The new Next Generation Portable, from Sony. Known by many as the PlayStation Portable 2, the new device was announced at a live event in Tokyo on Thursday.(Credit:Sony Computer Entertainment)At a live event in Tokyo, Sony on Thursday unveiled what many had come to call thePlayStation Portable 2, its long-awaited, all-new handheld video game console. Known officially as the "Next Generation Portable," the device will be available this holiday season. Sony has not yet said what the new PSP will cost.According to CNET sister site Gamespot.com, the new device will come in a brick form factor and feature a 5-inch OLED display with four times the resolution of current-generation PSPs. It has touch pads on both the front and the rear and dual micro analog joysticks. It also has both front- and rear-facing cameras and will use a Flash-based memory card. It will also offer 3G, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connectivity, according to GameSpot. On-stage in Tokyo, Sony's Shuhei Yoshida said the new device boasts PlayStation 3-quality graphics. The rear of the new NGP from Sony. It also has a Six-axis motion-sensing system. Games that will be offered for the Next Generation Portable (NGP) include Hot Shots Golf Next, Gravity Daze, Killzone, WipeOut, Resistance, LittleBigPlanet, Uncharted, Little Deviants, Reality Fighters, and Billiards, GameSpot reported. Before unveiling the new PSP, Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai also unveiled a new platform called PlayStation Suite that will ensure that first-generation PlayStation games will run on a wide variety of Android-enabled handsets andtablets. That could mean that a huge library of games will be available for the first time to Android users. Hirai also said that the Next Generation Portable is backward compatible, and will run downloadable PSP titles. And Toshihiro Nagoshi from Sega later said that it would be possible to port PlayStation 3 games to the NGP, according to Gamespot.A view of the front of the NGP, showing its dual sticks, and its front-facing camera.(Credit:Sony Computer Entertainment)Nintendo's DS has dominatedAlthough Sony's PSP line, which first launched in 2004, has sold an impressive 65.7 million units worldwide, according to independent analyst outfit VGChartz.com, it has been overshadowed for years by the much more successful Nintendo DS line of handhelds. All told, according to VGChartz, Nintendo has sold 145.3 million of its portable devices--the DS, the DSi, and the DS Lite. The slim PSP, which was released in 2007.(Credit:CNET)Sony has also tried to reinvigorate the PSP before, first with a slimmer version of the original device it put out in 2007, and then with a significant redesign that never really caught on known as the PSP Go. But neither of those devices were able to help Sony close the handheld sales gap with Nintendo. And now, of course, the new Next Generation Portable will be going head-to-head with the very-well-received new Nintendo 3DS. That well-reviewed device, which offers users 3D capabilities without special glasses, will go on sale March 27, and cost $249. It will launch with six first-party titles, including Legend of Zelda and Nintendogs + Cats, and ten third-party games, including Electronic Arts' The Sims and Madden Football' Super Street Fighter IV 3D from Capcom' Dead or Alive: Dimensions from Tecmo, and others. Still, the Next Generation Portable has a lot of people excited because of its rich collection of features. The PSP Go, which Sony launched in 2009.(Credit:Sony)But while Sony got plenty of attention for the new NGP, it did not unveil at the Tokyo event a PlayStation phone, as many had expected. It appears, according to published reports, that such a phone, which could be based on Google's Android platform, and be known as the Xperia, will not be revealed in public until next month's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.

0 Vote(s)

(Credit:Brian Tong/CNET)Shortly after CNET first heard that iOS 4.3 would bring the new hot-spot feature to all iPhones, Apple confirmed the rumor when it released the update's beta version to developers.iPhone Atlas' Joe Aimonetti will follow up with a list of new iOS 4.3 features shortly, but the hot-spot option is sitting pretty inside the Settings menu of our updated AT&T iPhone 4.Unfortunately, we can't actually use the hot spot just yet, but we welcome it nonetheless. Not only will the new Verizon iPhone 4 lack a monopoly on the feature, but also it gives AT&T customers another mobile computing option.Like theVerizon iPhone, AT&T handsets should be able to support up to five devices. We'll have to see, however, just how much AT&T will charge to use the feature. Verizon hasn't released that information either, but we expect that carrier to levy the additional $20 per month fee that it sticks on the other devices in its lineup that offer hot-spot capability.

0 Vote(s)

Google&39's goo.gl Web address shortener(Credit:screenshot by Stephen Shankland/CNET)Google took a somewhat arcane but important step yesterday in improving its goo.gl URL-shortening service, making it available not just through the Web but through third-party software.Google announced the goo.gl application programming interface (API) yesterday. That makes it possible, for example, to let software such as TweetDeck shorten Web addresses to more easily fit within Twitter's 140-character constraints. As with other services such as Bit.ly, the goo.gl service can share data about the expansion of the URLs. That's useful for companies that want to know how many people clicked a link in some tweet, for example."You can shorten and expand URLs using the API, as well as fetch your history and analytics," Ben D'Angelo of the URL-shortening team said in a blog post. "You could use these features for a wide variety of applications, enabling behaviors ranging from auto-shortening within Twitter or Google Buzz clients to running regular jobs that monitor your usage statistics and traffic patterns."Google launched the service to provide what it expects to be a reliable URL-shortening service. Although many other services have sprung up, fueled by Twitter in large measure, others have fallen by the wayside. Unless somebody else picks up the task of running the servers that handle the translation, links with a discontinued service stop working, a Web affliction called linkrot.URL shortening comes with some intrinsic risks as Web addresses with branded domain names that people can recognize are replaced by an obscure series of characters. Google hopes to ameliorate that problem, though."We're continuing to work on several usability improvements and to make our auto-detection of spammy or malicious content even more robust," D'Angelo said.

0 Vote(s)

Chevy&'s electric hybrid vehicle, the Volt, beat out the cheaper Nissan Leaf in electric car sales in the last month of 2010 as each manufacturer struggled to keep up with demand for their newest rides, the Associated Press reported today. The Volt went into production in mid-November and hit dealerships a few weeks later, just in time to compete with the Nissan Leaf. So far it looks like the Volt has won out in terms of sheer numbers a4" GM sold between 250 and 350 Volts in December. Only around 10 Nissan Leaf cars were actually sold in the past two weeks. There are around 50,000 people on the wait list for the Leaf, but Nissan initially limited rolling out its new electric vehicle line to around 200 cars in December across five states. The Leaf is around $8,000 cheaper than the Chevy Volt. Leaf Supply will continue to be limited well into early 2011, andNissan hasadvised dealers to be careful about what kind of orders they sign for the Leaf. Each Nissan Leaf ordered in August was supposed to be built-in Japan in September, and orders that come in September had a slight chance of being filled in December. Most Leaf orders are expected to dealer lots in January. California may get theirs first, since the cars are first shipped to Los Angeles before being sent to the rest of the Northwest. It&'s already looking like the electric car market is going to explode over the next several years as GM and Nissan, as well as others, ramp up production of their models of electric cars.Coda, a new startup that makes an electric sedan, expects to sell around 14,000 cars in its first year after release. Tesla Motors, despite some woes with its shares, has a prettyaggressive timeline for its Model S electric sedan and expects a prototype by the end of this year and deliveries to start in 2012. The company plans tobuild up to 20,000 Model S cars a year and currently hasabout 3,000 reservations for the car.Granted, the success of each car is going to depend on whether their owners change their lifestyles to account for a few hours of charging the batteries each day(even VentureBeat&'s GreenBeat writer Iris Kuo isn&'t exactly sure the world is ready for that yet). Now it&'s just a waiting game to see which company comes out on top once each manufacturer finally catches up to demand for the electric cars.Previous Story: Winklevoss twins on Facebook lawsuit: Ita4a4s not about the moneyPrintEmailTwitterFacebookGoogle BuzzLinkedIn DiggStumbleUponRedditDeliciousGoogleMore&8230' Tags: Chevy Volt, Coda, Leaf, Model S, Nissan Leaf, Roadster, Tesla Model S, Tesla Roadster, VoltCompanies: Chevy, Coda, GM, Nissan, Tesla Motors Tags: Chevy Volt, Coda, Leaf, Model S, Nissan Leaf, Roadster, Tesla Model S, Tesla Roadster, VoltCompanies: Chevy, Coda, GM, Nissan, Tesla MotorsMatthew Lynley is VentureBeat's enterprise writer.
